Iāve done it again. I have told you that Iāve finished a series, but then I get the opportunity to speak to another fascinating person and I think to myself, I canāt wait until the next series. I need to get them on now! So this is the reason for this bonus episode! James Nguyen is a serial entrepreneur who has previously been featured on global broadcast networks including CNBC, Sky, ABC and has been a contributing writer for Forbes. He is CEO of Inflexion Media - they support companies, brands, and individuals to reach an unlimited audience through powerfully simple content. James has also created this brand - jqn. Here, he is able to distill his experience and lessons about life and business through the beauty of spoken word poetry. His topics range from truths about life, love, and spirituality. He also expounds on first principles from business and entrepreneurship in a collection of poems too. My podcast really does bring some truly fascinating and interesting people my way and James is up there with the best of them! This was probably one of the 'deepest' conversations I've had on my podcast to date. Now, I usually find my own podcast guests. But I did not find James. I was approached and asked if I would like to have James as a guest. When I was told about his background and watched a jqn trailer where I could see him performing snippets of his poetry I thought, āBlimey, what are the chances that this passion project of mine would lead me to finding an entrepreneur of East Asian heritage, who writes spoken word poetry in a similar style to me, is open about the importance of maintaining oneās emotional well being (thereāll be more talk on this later) and owns his own media company?!ā How about that for brand alignment?! So, as you can imagine, I was very excited about this opportunity. This really was an ace conversation. James KIRs are: 1ļøā£ My poetry: It's helped change my world views, break boundaries and shape the way I move through the world as an entrepreneur. 2ļøā£ My inner work/spirituality: I have a daily practice of trauma and emotional healing work (innovated variation of IFS) as a way to improve my emotional acuity and ensure I don't project unresolved trauma in my life. 3ļøā£ Surround myself with compassionate candour: I have an inner circle of family and friends that have license to always offer me uncomfortable truths they see as my blindspots, to ensure I don't succumb to a subjective filter bubble. Shining a light on the next Generation Talent in the broadcast media industry... last episode of this series! Dee Hassan was someone I had interviewed for a Runner role whilst I was working at Icon Films. She was successful during the interview process and started her new position in February this year. I was really impressed by Dee when we first met - she has this quiet determination about her and I just know that whatever else she goes on to do in future, she will be absolutely brilliant at it! At the age of 16, Stephanie was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma - a brain tumour that occurs mostly in children and young adults. On the week of diagnosis she had surgery to remove the tumour. Radiotherapy and months of rehabilitation followed and during this time she was not going to school. She recovered well and remained at stable level of health for 15 years, although whilst stable she didnāt have the same level of health as the average person. At the age of 30 Stephanie began experiencing a loss of strength and balance. The tumour had not returned but her body was degenerating and still continues to degenerate, with no clear or fixable reason why. The long term effects of the tumour she had and subsequent treatment of it caused damage to her central nervous system. Itās only in the last 5 years that Stephanie has come to accept that she doesnāt have the ability to do many things and it took her a long time to come to terms with describing herself as living with a disability. The broadcast industry is at risk of not having talented broadcast engineers or media technologists in their workforce - and just so you know, they are actually an integral part of how we all get to see content on our screens - whether thatās on a TV, laptop, tablet or smartphone. Polly Hickling, is the course leader for the media technology programme at Solent University. Her course that is facing āthe axeā because there arenāt enough students being recruited to join her programme. Polly has strong connections with the media technology industry, particularly with the course alumni and organises work experience, placements and graduate positions with companies within the broadcast industry. In this episode we donāt talk about her personal āKeeping It Realsā but more about āKeeping It Realā in the way students should consider career choices in broadcast and of course to advocate broadcast technology as a potential career path. If youāre a parent and your child/children are still undecided as to what they want to do for a living - give this a listen because a career in broadcast/media technology is ace! Following great feedback from that particular episode, I asked Uschi to join me again with a focus on helping young adults, however, what was discussed is applicable to everyone. Simonās wife died tragically from a brain tumour. From diagnosis to death it was just three weeks, leaving him and his two young daughters to navigate a new way of living without her. Simon then became a Humanist Celebrant. Whatās a Humanist Celebrant? Well, Simon helps families celebrate life when it has passed, life as it begins through a naming ceremony and the coming together of two people through the ritual of marriage. All of these celebrations are for non-religious people who above all else value the human spirit and connection as we see it and experience it every day. Whilst Simon still works in the UK broadcast industry, much of his time is dedicated with his work in humanism. Simonās top three āKeeping It Realsā are brilliant and one of my favourites so far where we talk about campfires, our energy as humans living long after weāre gone and that happiness is a choice. *TRIGGER WARNING* This poem may trigger women who are trying to have a baby, or have experienced loss of a child as it explores my emotional journey around being a woman who experiences the physical feelings of being ready to have child despite not wanting one, then becoming undecided. As a woman in my mid-thirties I STILL havenāt made my mind up about whether I want kids or notā¦Right now, Iām moving towards not having a child/children and I know Iāll be fine with that. However, I had a really visceral reaction to turning 30 in the form of my body telling me it was ready to bear a child. It really did affect me because I was not expecting this at all. I found it really strange that I had this physical feeling within my body and unconscious mind through my dreams brought about visions and feelings of what it would be like to be pregnant. To be honest that experience scared me because I was someone who said relentlessly that I did not want children. Now I have reconciled all that and whilst many say that I still have plenty of time and I know many women who have gone on to have healthy and happy children into their 40s, I have decided that it is highly unlikely that I will be a motherā¦and thatās OK as I have other amazing children in my life. Current world events around anti-racism triggered this poem. The word 'Coconut' was used to describe me by my Indian peers at school. This was not an experience of racism, more 'identity shaming'. [Sighs a thoughtful and kinda anxious sigh] Iām not sure how to describe this episode⦠it got me ātotes emoshā (as the youth of today apparently say. Again, really did not intend to make up a rhyme, it seems to just happen!). I suppose it was my own internal and rather emotional reaction to current world events as a British Indian woman born and bred in the UK. I begin by talking about my childhood experiences and you basically hear how it probably still affects me to this day. The word 'Coconut' was used to describe me by other Indian kids - no other children of other ethnicities referred to me as this. This was not an experience of racism. A 'psychological' interpretation as a lived expert rather than a medical expert, of why your mum and dad are the way they are if they have been dealt a 'bad hand' in life, which in turn probably means you have too. Youāll have realised that I get DEEP (she says the word 'deep', really deeply, as in a deep tone) and this episode is no different. **Please note: Again there is strong language in this episode and it may also be a trigger for those of you who live with depression or anxiety. If you are feeling not so good right now, then firstly, Iām sorry thatās the case and I hope you find a way of feeling better soon. Secondly, this might not be the right time to listen to this particular episode, so Iād encourage you to listen to other podcasts that are more healing or joyful right now. Then again, if you really think that you could be OK listening to this, it may offer some food for thought.** This is my interpretation of how I think Mums and Dads around the world do the best they can (I know and am aware that some Mums and Dads do terrible, terrible things which cannot and should not be excused. If we take the time to understand why they behaved in that way or currently behave in the way they do, then it can help us heal and accept what was/ or is - I donāt go into that level of detail in this poem but it does offer my 'two pennies' as someone who had experienced trauma in my childhood (my counsellor referred to it as trauma, which at the time I was surprised by because whilst it was bloody hard, I never thought of attributing the word 'trauma' to it. Iām always very mindful that my childhood could have been worse and that other people's childhoods were or are worse than my own was).
