An ILO report “estimates that the annual cost to the global economy from accidents and work-related diseases alone is a staggering $3 trillion.” Making it a total of $10 trillion. What Works at Scale over Scaling What Works - ALWAYS!!!
Kicking off our "Been There, Done That" Series with the Chief Architect of the India Stack, Pramod Varma. In this multi-part tête-à-tête with him, we naturally begin with what started it all - Aadhaar. Rather than get into complex descriptions, we thought we will just leave you with some facts: Trust - 90% of people trust that their data are safe in the Aadhaar system and 61% of welfare beneficiaries trust that Aadhaar prevents others from accessing their benefits Inclusion - 49% of people used Aadhaar to access one or more services for the very first time (e.g., ration, MGNREGS, social pensions, SIM cards, and/or bank accounts). For 8% of people, Aadhaar was their first ID ever Service Delivery - 80% of beneficiaries feel Aadhaar has made PDS rations, MGNREGS and social pensions more reliable. Using Aadhaar, residents were 40% more likely to obtain a new SIM card within one day, compared to using other forms of ID e-KYC - The World Bank estimates that Aadhaar brought down the customer onboarding cost for an Indian bank from $23 to just $0.15 Just remember, 100 million people is considered to be a decent pilot in India 😉. Fraternity.”) The national motto of France. “Citius, Altius, Fortius.” (Swifter, higher, stronger”) The Olympic motto Aristotle observed that people find it easiest to remember three things. The rule of three started with his writing, “The Rhetoric;” In fact, the use of the rule of three is also referred to as rhetoric. The India Stack is also made up of three major components: Aadhar, UPI and ONDC (the focus of this episode). Many of the world’s most lasting jokes begin with three people walking into a bar (a priest, a reverend, and a rabbi or an engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician). You are right. They are all about mistaken identity. Unlike when we are mistaken for someone else in our day-to-day lives which is kind of a mundane occurrence; in movies, this could have far-reaching consequences. Which brings us to Aadhaar. Does any of you believe that this plot line would even be possible if we had checked the protagonists’ Aadhaar? Have we just killed an entire story genre in movies with Aadhaar? While that might not be entirely true, Aadhaar has definitely had a transformational effect on the Indian economic, social and political landscape. It is the largest digital identity program in the world with over 95% coverage in record time. As Indians, we do not take enough time to pat ourselves for this amazing feat. Cats, Toast, Lifebuoy and Tech
People who inhabit the tech world do odd things. Take everyone's favourite tech company Apple for example. Did you know that when you agree to the T&Cs for iTunes, you agree not to use it to make nuclear or chemical weapons? Or the rumoured conditions where the warranty of your Apple computer is voided if you are a smoker? Am sure there is a technicality hidden here somewhere :-). If this was not baffling enough, they have now created another world for themselves within that world - lovingly called the Metaverse (Episode 2 of 3TB). This song, composed and recorded by Normal Span (King Radio) 1936, is aptly the title of our Women's Day Special episode. Many a crooner has rendered this song in their voice - from Joan Baez to Harry Belafonte to the Carpenters, Robert Palmer and even the Grateful Dead. In this podcast, the women outnumbered the men. Did we need to prove a point? Not at all. We just did it because we could. And you should too - at every possible opportunity. So why do we say that? If all countries matched our gender parity measure, we could add $12 trillion a year to the global GDP. What’s more, India could add $700 billion of additional GDP in 2025, upping the country’s annual GDP growth by 1.4 percentage points. So said a McKinsey Report in 2015. How Young is Old in Tech: Part 2
Press F to Pay Respects - have you seen your kids, younger colleagues or anyone in your sphere of influence using this. Kids today use it in various ways, including in times of grief, such as during the recent Jacksonville shooting tribute stream. But do you know where it originated? Permit us to enlighten you. It goes back to 2014 when Activision released Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. In the game, you, the player, are a USMC Private Jack Mitchell, fighting off North Korean invaders / terrorist organizations trying to spread destruction. Towards the end of the first mission, Mitchell’s best friend, Private Will Irons, is killed. After you complete the mission, you attend Irons’ funeral. Here the game prompts you to press a button to pay your respects to your fallen comrade. Greenwashing (do look that up) might sound like a bad thing - but to us, it is a big thumbs up for ESG. And so does lack of transparency and sloppy metrics. What it actually means is Investors wouldn’t care about metrics or transparency unless they were using it to invest - a good thing. Someone is asking for ESG, so others are greenwashing - again, a good thing.
