There are friends we have for a season in our lives, that we might not see again, but they have a profound impact on us and make us smile when we think of them. There are lifelong friends, people who knew you “when.” They know your history, your stories, and they love every version of you without judgment. Even if you don’t see them often, your bond remains strong forever. And then there are adult friends, friends that might not have been there from the start, but once you meet them, you can’t imagine your life without them. They walk with you through decades sharing experiences, confidences, and the daily ups and downs of life. My original idea for this episode was to simply to explore the friendships between women and gay men. Why are these friendships so common, especially in midlife, and why are they so important to us as women, and to the men we share these friendships with? But what I discovered in my conversation with longtime friends John Mitterling and Karen Livingston is something far deeper than a surface exploration of this topic. In our very raw interview, John vulnerably shares his painful journey to coming out to the world as a gay man and how Karen was by his side with compassion every step of the way, without judgment, to lift him up. Join me for this profound exploration of friendship and how it can enrich, and sometimes, even save our lives. LINKS FOR SHOW NOTES: www.harmonync.org www.voicestogether.org

Downsizing used to be something people did well after retirement when they “got old.” But the trend is changing. More people are choosing to leave the nest as soon as it becomes empty to start a new chapter, a simpler chapter free of home maintenance and one that comes with more time and flexibility. Some people want to travel, others want to be closer to their adult children. Whatever the reason, there are practical and logistical steps that are a necessary part of this process. In this episode, we speak to a veteran real estate agent about what she’s seeing and best practices to efficiently downsize. We also talk to a recent downsizer about the hurdles and the perks of simplifying your living situation. Pamela DeLoatch's mother lied about her age. Pamela didn't learn about the ten-year discrepancy until after her mother died. Why did she do it? Pamela suspects that like many women of her generation she felt that getting older was a sign of weakness, a sign that you were no longer relevant, especially as a woman. But at 61, Pamela has embraced a new philosophy. She's proud of what she has accomplished in her lifetime and still has so much to offer to her community. Pamela had a career in corporate America, and after pivoting in her fifties, she is now a successful freelance writer. She's married with four grown children. Life wasn't always easy balancing work and family as they crisscrossed the country several times moving from North Carolina to Chicago and back again twice. But with age comes the wisdom to know that if you have survived something once, you can do it again, and again, and again. In this episode, Pamela and I break down the myths and stereotypes about aging and even dig into Brooke Shields' insightful new book: Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed To Get Old. About 2 million women reach menopause every year; that’s about 6000 women per day. Scientifically, this means they stop having their periods for one year. The average age to begin menopause is 52, but it can occur anywhere from 45 to 58. And there’s a big lead up to the red carpet that a lot of women don’t even know about that carries its own set of symptoms called perimenopause. Here’s the real kicker, these seasons of a woman’s life can last for years. The list of symptoms is endless—hot flashes, trouble sleeping, irritability, weight gain. Yet, it seems like medical resources have historically not focused on the serious issues that women face during menopause. In this episode, we talk frankly about what happens to women during menopause and look at the medical solutions that are available to help them deal with this transition in a tangible and meaningful way. My guests include a women who shares her menopause journey with us and a Family Nurse Practitioner who specializes in women’s health. https://www.linkedin.com/in/susan-catchings-08598b12/ Primary Care Provider in Cary, NC | Susan Catchings, DNP, FNP-C | Avance Care

Welcome to the second season of AGELESS: Opening Doors with Amanda Lamb. This is a podcast for women, about women, featuring women. There's a new generation of women who are redifining midlife, what it means to find a new chapter based on a foundation of life experience and profound insight. The process is both daunting and a little bit thrilling. I listened to you, my audience. This season, I will be bringing you stories about some of the hottest topics that interest you. The shows will also include interviews with experts who break down myths and give you the facts, as well as advice you can use. Whether you are looking for inspiration, information, or motivation, there is something for you here. Join me for another wild ride this year as we unpack issues and talk to trailblazing women who are paving the way for the rest of us. Let's do this! A staggering number of young adults are still living with their parents. A Pew Research study puts the number at 57% for people age 18 to 24, and about a third of people age 18 to 34 live at home. These numbers haven’t been this high in the United States since the 1940s. The number one reason young people cite for returning to the nest is their inability to survive financially on their own. This return home can topple the family dynamic. So, what is the best way to create boundaries—financial, emotional, and otherwise when it comes to living with adult children? Should there be rules? You must work or go to school, contribute to the household chores, and pay rent. It’s not as easy as it sounds to establish and stick to these boundaries. Pediatrician turned parenting coach, Dr. Hope Seidel, returns to the show for this episode to walk us through best practices for welcoming adult children home while keeping your sanity. Sharon Lawrence is a name most people know well. She is a star on the big screen, the little screen, and on the stage. She is probably best know for her longtime role as Sylvia Costas on NYPD Blue. She's also a huge supporter of women in her industry and a committed environmentalist. But here in North Carolina, we're proud to call her family. The Carolina native is now bringing her talent along with her star power to the Playmakers Repertory Theater at her alma mater, UNC Chapel Hill, for a weeklong stint in "The Shot." It's a one-woman play inspired by the story of the most powerful woman in journalism. Before her legendary tenure at The Washington Post, where she defied the U. S. government by publishing both the Pentagon Papers and the Watergate story, Katharine Graham was an abused wife. Her resilience set the stage for her transformation into an emblem of power in the media world. *This interview with Sharon first aired in April, 2024. But I wanted to bring it back this week to coincide with her appearance on stage in our area. This is a longer version of the original conversation with extra content. I hope you enjoy listening to Sharon and glean as much wisdom from her as much as I did! With the new year approaching, I decided it was time to unpack the journey I've experienced in 2024 producing and hosting my podcast, AGELESS. My lovely friend and former colleague, who also happened to be my very first guest on the show in January 2024, Sloane Heffernan, agreed to put me in the hotseat to talk about the ups and downs of being a one-woman show and all that I've learned in the past year. I'm so thankful for all the women who trusted me with their powerful stories about everything from love, loss, illness, addiction, mental illness, and every other curveball that life throws at us. I'm so humbled they chose to tell their stories to me and my audience. I'm also humbled by the support I received from all of you. Stay tuned for a brand new format coming in late January 2025 where I will dig deeper into some of these hot button topics women are talking about and get some advice from experts. Several relationships ended poorly, one in death, the other in divorce. But when Maura finally got sober, her career thrived. She started a business and became a realtor, but something was always missing. It wasn’t until she started learning about the metaphysical world after a spiritual awakening in 2021 that Maura knew something had to change. She was burned out and lacked a true purpose in life. 83-year-old Florence Nash is a poet and a storyteller with a melodic voice that I could listen to all day. She’s also an accomplished musician and a believer that the arts make all our lives more joyful. Raised near the banks of the Tar River in tiny Tarboro, North Carolina, Florence eventually spread her wings. They took her all over the world to live in many places including California and Europe. Out west, she found herself in the middle of the counterculture revolution. Like most women of her generation, she was told her main purpose in life was to get married, have children, and be a good wife and mother. She did all that, but she wanted more. This sent her on a lifelong journey to figure out where she fit in, and if she had other skills to contribute to her community and the world. You will love her continual path of exploration and self-discovery which has led her in so many different directions. Florence is guided by the principal that if something gives you joy and is useful to others, you have found your purpose.

B.J. Council came by her career the old-fashioned way, hard work. She came from a farming family, an educator mother, and a foundation of community service. B.J. tried college, and it wasn’t for her. So, after working multiple jobs to pay the bills and sleeping on friends’ floors, she decided to go to the Durham Public Safety Academy. She graduated as a firefighter and a police officer. She spent her career developing programs to support the community and to help them foster stronger relationships with police. B.J. retired amid a scandal regarding overtime payments to officers in 2009, and while it almost broke her, it didn’t keep her from her core mission. In 2015, B.J. started “You and Five-0” to help bridge the often-troubled relationships between the Black community and police. She believes we are all put on this planet to do something good. Martha Lopez-Anderson is member of a club that no one wants to be part of. After the sudden death of her seemingly healthy 10-year-old son from sudden cardiac arrest in 2004 blindsided Martha and her family, she immersed herself in education and training related to the prevention and treatment of SCA in youth. She joined Parent Heart Watch which is made up of parents who tragically lost children from SCA, many of them during a sporting event at school. Martha advocates for prevention strategies like early heart screenings and for lifesaving tools to be available wherever children gather that can be used in the event of a cardiac emergency. Martha could have crawled into a hole and lived in her grief, but instead, she turned her love for her son and her passion for helping other families into her life’s work. ****PLEASE NOTE THIS PODCAST CONTAINS DETAILED REFERENCES TO KIDNAPPING, CHILD ABUSE, VIOLENCE, AND SEXUAL ASSAULT.**** You may be familiar with a recent movie that just dropped on Netflix called “Woman of the Hour” with Anna Kendrick. It is the fictionalized version of a true story about a serial killer and rapist name Rodney Alcala. He’s known as the “Dating Game Killer.” There have been countless shows, documentaries, and podcasts about his crimes. He was convicted of murdering 7 girls and women and placed on death row until he died of natural causes in 2021. And while he was convicted of some of his crimes, there was always a belief by investigators that he was potentially responsible for 130 more. One of those unsolved crimes involved Niki Rowe Cross. She says Alcala was one of the johns who raped her in an attic in Ohio in 1977 where she was held captive as a teenager along with two other teens for a year. Darlena Moore grew up in the beautiful city of Asheville in the North Carolina mountains. The devastation that Hurricane Helene left behind has been tragic for her and her family, as well as heartbreaking. She is continuing to help in the recovery there in any way that she can. But at the same time, she is on her own personal mission. Darlena and her siblings were born into poverty and lost their mother at a very young age. They were separated and Darlena ended up in a very dangerous situation—a home that included alcoholics, violence, pedophiles, and emotional and physical cruelty. One day, she climbed out a bathroom window and ran away with nothing but the clothes on her back. After several placements, Darlena finally ended up in a nurturing foster home. The couple that took her in, the Gilberts, not only cared for her, but they helped her follow her dream of going to college. To honor the opportunity she was given, Darlena created a nonprofit scholarship fund that specifically helps children in the foster care system in North Carolina pay for college. Initially, she funded it by making homemade “mountain girl” granola until she could get donors. Now, Darlena is making granola for hurricane survivors as well as making the dreams of other foster children come true. Like the title of her first book, “Bare Naked in Public,” Christine Amoroso is baring everything—not literally, but emotionally, as she unpacks a life where happiness often seemed elusive. Pregnant and married at age 17, she pulled herself up by her bootstraps to have multiple successful careers in accounting and education. But eventually, she realized that her workaholic ways and poor choices in the romance department had led her into a downward spiral of shame and guilt instead of happiness. In her fifties, Christine quit everything, got rid of her belongings, and traveled to Italy in search of her family’s roots. What she didn’t realize was that in the process of examining her family tree, she would eventually find herself. Christine is now blowing up the myths that have ruled her entire life. Twice divorced, she realized that she had been making all the wrong choices when it came to men. She also realized that life is not all about work. Christine calls herself a “recovering overachiever” who occasionally relapses, something many of us can relate to. She bravely shares her journey to self-acceptance and fulfillment with me in this week’s show. Cara Amore has a resume that reads like magical realism—is it possible to be so many things in one lifetime? Cheyanne is a Community and De-escalation specialist which in layman’s terms means when things start to go south, she handles it, and boy, does she handle it. When I first met her, I discovered she is kind, strong, and compassionate, but she doesn’t take crap from anyone.
