Jack Daniel's has put out some ultra premium in recent years. Just when you thought it couldn't get any more premium, they recently released a 14-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey clocking in at a massive 126.3 proof. You have to go all the way back to the early 1900s to find a release from Jack Daniel's that is this old. Many enthusiasts are dubbing this as an early favorite for whiskey of the year. But what do we think of it? You'll have to listen to find out. As always, there is spirited conversations, blinds, and a familiar female co-host. Thank you for listening and let us know what you think of the JD 14 year. -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Partnership(s) Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUP Visit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your order Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

David Jennings aka Rare Bird 101 is back again! Talking turkey? Nope. This time around, David joins us to talk about his new whiskey company Washington Lafayette Revolutionary Spirits and the very first releases from the brand which are Caleb's Crossing Bourbon & Rye. These whiskeys will be exclusively available on Bourbonoutfitter.com on April 4th. But, what do they taste like? Perhaps more importantly, what is the story behind these bottles? Caleb's Crossing Bourbon is a blend of 6 and 7 year old straight whiskeys that is dual cask finished in Pineau des Charentes and Armagnac Casks and slow proofed to perfection. Caleb's Crossing Rye starts off as an 8 year 95/5 rye whiskey and is also finished in Pineau casks. Both of these whiskeys taste as unique as the story behind them. David takes the time to explain the painstaking process he went through to craft these whiskeys and delves further into the family story that made it all possible. While we have plenty of fun in this episode and talk a little Turkey and Raconteur, the majority of this fascinating conversation is focused on Caleb's Crossing and what David has in store for the future. We promise you will want to listen all the way to "the finish." -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Partnership(s) Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUP Visit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your order Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

Just this week, we were invited to the Wild Turkey Distillery to partake in the reintroduction of the famed 101 proof bourbon with an 8 year age statement as a permanent offering in US market. Being part of this event meant that we got some face time with Bruce Russell who is a third generation whiskey maker with the brand. If you want to know what Wild Turkey 101 with an 8 year age statement means to Bruce and his family, you won't want to miss this episode. Wild Turkey 101 in this form is something we'd never thought we'd see again. Well...here it is...in it's purest form...as described by Bruce Russell.

The cats are taking the court this evening to take on Tennessee in the Sweet 16. As excited as we are about the prospects of the Cats making the Elite 8, we are equally as excited about the new bottle we have to review this week. Thirteenth Colony Distilleries recently released their 113 Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished With Maple Wood Spirals to much acclaim. Although Thirteenth Colony has been around for quite a long time, they’ve skyrocketed in popularity over the past few years due to their double oaked bourbon releases. So how does this new Maple Finished bourbon taste? You’’ll have to listen to find out and we guarantee you will be surprised with our take. This week we are joined by our good friend Jason Hale from Arsenic Culture for this tasting and conversational masterpiece. The bourbon conversation is great, but the talk about 1-900 numbers, March Madness, and parkas is even better. -------------------------- SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyTW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

Back in episode 84, we tasted and reviewed the 6 year old version of Smooth Ambler Founders' Cask Strength Bourbon. This was a brand new offering of their own distillate from a brand who built their reputation on MGP. Fast forward two years and that distillate has now turned 8 years old! For this weeks short, we revisit another batch of this bourbon which is now a little older and has a bit more proof. On the first go around, we game this a try, try, buy. Penelope Bourbon started in 2018 and quickly ascended to a place only few brands could dream of. They built a cult following and had great distribution. After only a few years as a start up whiskey company, they sold to MGP for over 200 million. We've reviewed Penelope products before on the podcast, but we've never had the pleasure of reviewing anything from their coveted Estate Collection. Thanks to a dedicated listener, we had the opportunity. We taste and review this 9 year old private select Bourbon from Penelope and talk about betting apps as well as where our podcast has been and where it's going. A whisky voted "worlds best rye" 3 years in a row was virtually unknown to us until Kenny's son started a new business venture. In a strange coincidence, the founding of his company lead to the discovery of this rye. Each batch of Millstone Dutch Single Rye Whisky is meticulously handcrafted using 100% rye mash and aged for a minimum of 100 months in new American oak casks. The distiller claims that the lengthy 11-day fermentation process provides a complexity of flavor that sets this whisky apart. Well, we'll be the judge of that. Join us for this short and we explore a rye whisky that takes us well outside of our comfort zones.

Mississippi bourbon and rye? Really? The answer is yes. For this week, a listener (Walker) was kind enough to send us two single barrel selections from the Crittenden Distillery in Kiln, Mississippi. With roots of the distillery dating all the back to 2016, you could imagine our surprise when we saw two 7 year cask strength products (bourbon and rye) that were distilled, aged, and bottled by this up and coming whiskey producer. in the midst of tasting. and reviewing this whiskey, Steven and Kenny got in a argument about friend chicken and much hilarity ensued. So join us this week if you want to laugh and find out about a small distillery in Mississippi that is putting out some great products. Woodford Reserve is one of the most iconic distilleries in the world. Despite the fact that they have an incredibly consistent set of products that are very popular, we've lamented that most of their whiskeys are 90.4 proof. Well...the newest release in the limited distillery series offerings is the highest proof whiskey that they've ever releaased! Clocking in at 139.4 proof, Woodford Reserve's Chocolate Whisper Redux comes in a 375ml bottle and costs $99.99. But how does it taste? And is it worth the hefty price tag that it carries? Often critical of Woodford products, our short review for this week might surprise you.

March Madness is upon us! A few episodes ago, we tasted and reviewed a bottle of the Club Blue small batch bourbon (Team White). Since that time, we visited Bespoken Spirits to learn more about the process and what goes into these NIL fundraising bourbons. In this episode, we taste and review a bottle of the Club Blue Team Blue Bourbon which is a high rye bourbon whiskey finished with ex-tequila and cherry wood staves. In order to eliminate all preconceived notions, we decided to fresh crack this bottle and blind it against an array of other different bourbons in order to give it the fairest shake possible. None of us had tasted this before blinding it. So what did we blind it against and what did we ultimately think about this more premium Club Blue bottle? You'll have to listen to find out. Hartfield & Co. is the only bourbon distillery to exist in Bourbon County since prohibition. Even though they've been in business for a little over 11 years, Hartfield and Co. recently made a lot of waves in the bourbon community when they released their 9 Year Old Family Reserve Bourbon. With most of the barrels clocking in at over 140 proof, this bourbon sold out instantly and only a handful of groups/store were able to select single barrels of it. Justin's House of Bourbon was one of the stores that selected a single barrel and they recently had a release event for this bottle. After the event concluded, we got to hang with Jeremy Buchanan (CEO/Master Distiller) and Mike Leek (VP of sales) from Hartfield & Co. for an interesting and engaging conversation. If you've ever wondered about Hartfield and Co., then you won't want to miss this episode. You'll get to hear about how this distillery came to be as well as how they approach crafting each of their bourbons. Not only did we taste and comment on the 9 year old family reserve bourbon, but we also tried their pre-prohibition style bourbon as well as their Old Bourbon County brand. As always, we had an excellent time recording with Jeremy and Mike. If you haven't been paying attention to Hartfield and Co., you are definitely going to want to check them out in the future as they are doing some incredible and amazing stuff. This is a wonderful conversation and we hope you enjoy listening about all things Hartfield and Co!

For the fifth time in the history of the podcast, we have a listener sponsored double blind. For this week, our listener and friend (Sanch D from right here in Kentucky) opened up his liquor cabinet and pulled out a double blind that would make Kenny blush. We love blinding on this show and Sanch gave us distillate that ALL came from the same distillery. In addition to the three blind samples that we taste and review, we also talk about March Madness and a bunch of other things going on in our lives. So join us this week as we test our palates with another fan sponsored double blind. Even though we were unable to guess the age of these blinds, the astute listener will notice that we picked up the fact that these all came from the same distillery very early on. Which distillery? You'll have to listen to find out. We had so much fund with this episode and we are thankful for our good buddy, Sanch! We have seen other companies blend bourbon and rye on purpose and some have done it on accident. Knob Creek is one of the latest brands to try their hand at blending a straight bourbon whiskey with a straight rye whiskey. Coming in at 113 proof, we taste and review this blend and provide our thoughts on it. For short a episode, the laughter is palpable. In this short, but action packed effort, Anthony revisits his love for Total Wine and the fellas get the giggles over a specific tasting note associated with the whiskey in our glass. EverNorth Spirits Co. was founded by Dan Shook and Sean Paisley about a year ago. While Dan and Sean are best known for their YouTube channel the "Bourbon Junkies," their new venture into sourcing and blending their own whiskey has been very positively received. Back in episode 184, we had a chance to hear a bit about EverNorth straight from Dan and Sean. Definitely give that one a listen if you missed it. Despite the fact that we knew about the brand, we don't have a ton of experience with their products. Thanks to an awesome listener (Adam L.), we got to taste and give our thoughts on three different EverNorth whiskeys. In addition to the standard whiskey related banter, we also give our thoughts on the slowing of the bourbon boom and other things happening in our lives. We've tasted and reviewed a handful of Bulleit products in the past, but for this short, we taste and review their newest whiskey to hit the market. Bulleit Bottled in Bond is a new "very special bottling from the company" which boasted that the liquid comes from the 2017 distilling season. Despite being affiliated with Heaven Hill branding, John E. Fitzgerald was not an OG whiskey man. Instead, he was a Treasury agent. Legend has it that he would thieve whiskey from all the best barrels in the warehouse. This is the short story of how the Fitzgerald brand was born. Throughout history, Fitzgerald whiskeys have been a symbol of quality and highly sought after. Today, we taste and discuss the Fitzgerald inspired Larceny Barrel Proof bourbon (C924) and ponder how it stacks up against the batch we tried three years ago and others. The banter for this week includes special Valentine's Day plans, our collective response to a critical listener review, and a whole bunch of other fun stuff. For this weeks short, we have the third batch of Raconteur Rye which is a blended rye whiskey collaboration brought to us by none other than David Jennings (Rare Bird 101) and the good folks over at the WoodWork Collective. You can go back and listen to our reviews of Batch # 1 (E157) and Batch # 2 (E180). The big change for the current batch is that it uses a Kentucky rye as the base whiskey instead of MGP. Coming in at 118 proof and still carrying a 7 year age statement, this bottle released this past Friday (Feb. 7th) and is already sold out. We thought we would be ahead of the curve, but it turns out we were just a little behind. So, what do we think of this batch? You won't want to miss our take on this one. This weeks episode takes us back into time when we reviewed one of the most sought after releases from Woodford Reserve which is Woodford Double Double Oaked Bourbon (aka DDO). All the way back in episode 93, we reviewed DDO. Even though this used to be a distillery only release with limited distribution in Kentucky, it now is a nationwide release and it comes in a bigger bottle than what we are used to. The Castle & Key Distillery opened its doors in 2018 after years of careful planning and restoration. The castle like distillery was originally called the Old Taylor Distillery and was built in 1887 by none other than Colonel EH Taylor. The distillery grounds are amongst the most picturesque in the bluegrass which is why this has become on of the most popular places to tour. After initially releasing Vodka, Gin, and other spirits, the first bourbon was bottled in 2022 to much fanfare. Even though we never did an episode on it, we were in agreement that wasn't our favorite. Fast forward to this episode where we crack and review Castle & Key's Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon. Coming in at just 105 proof and being a true small batch whiskey (only 100 barrels in the blend), we were eager to see if this offering was better than the initial bourbon that was released. Did you think we were going to take some time off from blinding after the best of 2024? Not a chance. Prideful Goat is a whiskey brand that was founded in 2020 by a popular podcast host and the head of the Houston Bourbon Society. Since then, the brand has grown exponentially and gained a pretty solid following. Thanks to one of our listeners (Ryan), we were able to try batch # 4 of Prideful Goat's 15 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. For all intents and purposes, this was the whiskey that started it all for the brand. Give us a listen to hear what we thought of it. By the way, this episode barely happened thanks to a rude visit by mother nature to the commonwealth.

Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Rye Whiskey is the 13th release to join the famed E. H. Taylor Collection from the Buffalo Trace Distillery. This rye is uncut and unfiltered. Even though little is known about the age or mashbill of this whiskey, it comes in at a whooping 126 proof. This release has been rumored for many years, but the fact that it is finally here is very exciting. However, the reviews on this one have been incredibly mixed with some expressing love and others describing it as lackluster. What do we think? You'll have to listen to find out. Once again, we are joined by our good friend Jason from Arsenic Culture. This episode is loaded with laughs and is definitely one of the most honest whiskey reviews that you're gonna hear all week long.

Redwood Empire gained notoriety early on by sourcing and bottling some excellent whiskey. Nestled in the heart of wine country on the Russian River in California, these distillers recently released 8 year cask strength single barrels of their own distillate. For this weeks short, we taste and review one of these bottles compliments of our good friend (and listener), Andrew. Even though this episode is a shorty, it's chock full of Mash Up goodness. Though you'll have to listen to find out what we think of this bottle, the future does look bright for Redwood Empire. The Willett Distillery is legendary for a number of its brands and for the fact that they've sourced some of the most iconic and outstanding whiskeys in recent years. They also have been distilling their own whiskey for over 10 years. On today's episode, we open and taste an 11 year old rye whiskey that was distilled, aged, and bottled by Willett. With so many people chasing the older bottles that are sourced from other distillers, we give you our honest opinion of this whiskey that is 100% produced by Willett. For this holiday hangover episode, we are joined by our good from Jason from Arsenic Culture. Whiskey is always better when shared with friends. Old Forester recently released their newest offering in the 117 series to celebrate Repeal Day. Coming in at 95 proof and carrying an 11 year age statement, this liquid was matured in a heat cycled warehouse (Warehouse "I" to be exact). This, it is not your standard offering from Old Forester. While this bourbon was created for Repeal Day, we thought it would be good to crack on Christmas Eve. Join us this week as we talk about last minute shopping, taste and review this bourbon, and also discuss the best of 2024. Bardstown Bourbon Company is known for it's collaboration series. For this week, we taste and review TWO of the newer offerings in this series. The first, Silver Oak , is a collaboration between BBC and Silver Oak Wine makers in California. To make this batch, an eclectic blend of 6 different straight bourbon whiskeys was finished in Silver Oak Cabernet barrels for 17 months. The result...well...you'll have to listen. The second, Amrut , is a collaboration between BBC and the Amrut Distillery which is a famed single malt maker in India. To create to collab, rye was first finished in used Amrut barrels and then blended with bourbon. Do you think we liked this one? Join us this week as we laugh, talk about the holidays, and about a proposed law in Ohio that is nothing short of cringe worthy. Surprises come in all shapes and sizes and sometimes they come in a really nice box that contains a bottle of bourbon that is hand numbered to 589. This years release of Michter's 20 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is one of the rarest and most allocated bottles that we've ever laid our eyes on. But, how did we get our hands on it and how does it taste? Well, in the midst of our 2024 "best of blinds," we decided to call an audible and add a few more whiskeys to the competition. Unbeknownst to us all, our buddy Ryan Alves pulled out all the stops and casually showed up with this bottle in hand. So join us this week as we provide an update on our best of blinds competition and give you our thoughts on this highly allocated bottle.

Pappy Van Winkle's 15 Year Family Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is one of the most sought after bottles on the market today. The now famous wheated bourbon recipe was created by Julian P. "Pappy" Van Winkle and he believed the wheat was responsible for creating a soft, smooth, and distinguished profile. Turns out he was right. The Van Winkle recipe and lineup is steeped in history and the brand has become legendary amongst ALL whiskey drinkers. But is the hype and acclaim deserved? What does this unicorn taste like? In this episode, we do our best to demystify Pappy and give you our honest take on this highly coveted pour. You won't believe how much we paid for this bottle and you might also be shocked by how it stacks up against other heavyweights in some impromptu blinds. Almost one year ago, our friend Ryan Alves made his first appearance on the podcast to discuss the results of our annual “best of blinds” event. Ryan (and Kenny) started this tradition in 2020. Each year the competition has been slightly different, but, this year might be the biggest and best field we’ve ever had. Over the next month, we will be blind tasting and rating 60 different whiskeys that we all believe could contend for the coveted “whiskey of the year” title. This episode marks the official kick off of our annual blinds. We hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! For this week's short, we decided to taste and review a bottle that has been around since 2014! High West Rendezvous Rye is considered to be a flagship whiskey of the High West brand and it is a limited offering. Once made completely of MGP distillate, this whiskey is now a blend of High West's own pot still rye and some of the distillate from the factory in Indiana. You'll have to give us a listen to find out how this "newer" version of this whiskey tastes. Unfortunately, we didn't have older stocks to compare it to, but that didn't stop Kenny from introducing a blind. -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Partnership(s) Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUP Visit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your order Medicinal Whiskey Charity Gala: visit https://www.medicinalwhiskeycharity.org/ Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

You might recall that we once reviewed a bottle of Buzzard's Roost Cigar Rye and raved about it! For this weeks short, we got our hands on a store of pick of Buzzard's Roost Bourbon. While Steven and Anthony were both MIA, Kenny invited some special guests (who are also supporters of our podcast) to taste and review this new bottle. For the third time in the history of the podcast, we have a listener sponsored double blind. For this week, our listener and friend (Bryson from Washington) was kind enough to send us some things to try. Anytime we receive something from our listeners, we appreciate it immensely. In addition to the four samples that Bryson sent us, he also sent us a very kind note. So join us this week as we test our palates with this fan sponsored double blind compliments of our friend from Sedro Woolley in the great Pacific Northwest. Will we be able to guess age, proof, and distillate? You'll have to listen to find out. Spoiler alert, many of these whiskeys were "diesel" proof and things quickly go off the rails. It's a momentous occasion! The newest version of Jack Daniel's Coy Hill is here and we will tell you whether you should pass, try, or buy on this coveted bottle. Coy Hill first released in 2021 and immediately became a darling of the whiskey community. The barrels used for this release come from the Coy Hill barrel house which is on the highest elevated rolling hill on the Jack Daniel Distillery property. Because of the elevation, the most extreme temperature changes take place, leading to more rapid aging and robust flavors. Is this years release as good as the previous ones? We couldn’t think of a better way to spend our 200th episode than to discuss how bourbon can be used for charitable purposes. Medicinal Whiskey Charity is a 501(c)(3) organization that was founded by a group of healthcare workers in Georgia and South Carolina in 2020. Since its inception, MWC has raised an astounding $1.5 million total for numerous charitable purposes. For this episode, we are joined by Drs. Malay Shah and Michael Huang who are based in Lexington, KY and also serve as board members for MWC. Since 2022, they have been instrumental in planning the annual MWC Gala event. Over the past two years, this event and related sweepstakes has raised $700,000 for UK Healthcare (Transplant Program and Children’s Hospital). This year’s MWC Gala will be held on December 14th at the Carrick House in Lexington. In this episode, you will get to hear all about the charity, the annual Gala, and how you can be involved. We also taste through some very special bottles (including a 20 year old Knob Creek pick) that will be available at the annual Gala event. What MWC has done so far is nothing short of amazing and we hope you enjoy hearing about everything they do to use whiskey for good. -------------------------- To find out more about the charity, visit https://www.medicinalwhiskeycharity.org/ Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Partnership(s) Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUP Visit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your order Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

Michter's Legacy Series celebrates the foundational roots and heritage of the brand through two different whiskeys. Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash Whiskey honors John Shenk who founded what would become the Michter's brand all the way back in 1753. This years release of Shenk's is a predominately rye whiskey that is finished in naturally dried french oak barrels for 24 months. Bomberger's Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey honors the time period when the Michter's distillery was known as Bombergers. This years release is a bourbon with a malted rye component that was aged for three years in air dried chinquapin oak barrels. That's a lot of unique finishing for these two whiskeys. But how do they taste? Join us this week as we talk about barrel picks, fast food, and of course these two bottles. Hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording. All of you lovely people out there have been asking for this episode for quite some time. In 2022, Green River Bourbon made it's long awaited return (or debut). Green River was founded in 1885 (KY-DSP-10). Despite a very fruitful start and many accolades for their bourbon, the distillery fell into disarray by the 1950s and was only recently resurrected. Since returning to the market, enthusiasts have been speaking the praises of the brand and bourbon beginners have been impressed with the quality at a friendly price. CNB stands for Camp Nelson Rickhouse "B." The most recent (and third) release of Russell's Reserve Single Rickhouse bourbon draws on stocks of whiskey from the famed Camp Nelson campus which is just outside of our homebase in Lexington, KY. If you take a gander back to episode 121, you will see that we compared both the "C" and "F" releases. In true Mash Up fashion, we started out the night hoping to simply review this newest release in the Russell's line. Jim Beam has been releasing limited edition bottles faster than we can keep up with. Back in episode 123, we tasted and reviewed the 2023 version of the Marker's Mark Cellar Aged bourbon. Thanks to Jason from Arsenic Culture, this episode focuses on the 2024 version. While this is supposed to be a Tuesday short episode, it turned into a medium episode thanks to a lot of blinding. Before we even got into the MM, we did a blind to help out one of our friends. Instead of a quick review, we decided to blind the current version of Cellar against its predecessor. As always, a ton of hilarity ensues and the guys are left debating which version of Marker's Cellar is better.

The Little Book series is something we've become accustomed to looking for every fall bourbon season -- so we were extra surprised when we saw this new release called "The Infinite." The first release of this new annual extension of the brand features distillate that comes from each of the three generations of the Noe family. But how does it taste and how does it compare to other LEs that we've tasted from Beam? Our buddy Jason from Arsenic Culture joined us again to help us review this most recent "chapter" of Little Book. You thought that we were done talking about our most recent Four Roses pick...well...wrong. Be prepared, because there are a lot of laughs and shenanigans as well as our take on this new LE from Jim Beam. The Starlight Distillery in Indiana is quickly becoming know for producing excellent and unique whiskeys. In this short episode, we taste a very special Starlight Single Barrel Bourbon that was selected by our good friends at bourbonoutfitter.com. If that isn't enough, we also taste and review a Starlight Bourbon finished in Pear Brandy Casks that was selected by a private group and provided by one of our listeners. If that really really isn't enough, then we have a surprise Kenny Mills blind involving a Starlight product that just might surprise all of you. During a recent conversation, we "discovered" that most of us didn't have experience with Bardstown Bourbon Company and their extensive series of products. A couple weeks ago, one of our listeners was in town for the Kentucky Bourbon Festival and was nice enough to leave us a generous sample of Bardstown Bourbon Discovery Series # 12. This blend consists of 6-14 year old and carries an ABV of 57.6%. To help us taste and review this bourbon, our friend Jason Hale from Arsenic Culture joined. As per the usual, much calamity and laughter ensues from the get and we have some very strong opinions about this bourbon. Good? Bad? Whiskey of the Year? You'll have to listen to find out.

River Roots Barrel Company started just one year ago and they've already managed to generate a lot of hype and attention in the bourbon community. For this episode, we hang with co-founders of River Roots, Ryan Lintz and Tom Gray. Everyone involved with River Roots has connections to Cleveland, Ohio, which home base for this up and coming bourbon brand. Ryan and Tom have different backgrounds, but their love of whiskey brought them together and they aspire to find the best spirits in the world to satisfy any whiskey enthusiast’s palate. We were delighted that Cam Leach (Drums & Drams) stuck around for this episode. Not only did we enjoy learning about River Roots, but we had a really good time in the process. Anthony couldn't contain his excitement about finally getting to meet Bourbon Buddy and Kenny made sure that we had a lot of good pours. River Roots is a bourbon company that you might not be familiar with right now, but you are definitely going to want to pay attention to all the amazing stuff they are doing. This was an incredible hang/ conversation and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

On September 10th, 2024, the family of Jimmy Russell, the employees of Wild Turkey, and whiskey enthusiasts from all over the world celebrated the 70th anniversary of Jimmy's time at Wild Turkey. Jimmy started with the distillery back in 1954 and is the oldest living master distiller in spirits. To celebrate this milestone, Wild Turkey created an 8 year 101 proof bourbon which is representative of everything that Jimmy holds dear about this beloved spirit. The best part? It carries an MSRP of only $50. It's been a long time since we've seen a limited offering with this low of a price tag. Join us this week as we review this bottle with a little help from a friend. As if this bottle wasn't enough, our guest host for this week is Cameron Leach from Drums & Drams. Cam has an excellent YouTube channel and we were honored to have him join us for this bottle review. Congratulations to Jimmy Russell and cheers to all!

This week we give our quick take on this Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Travelers' Exclusive Tennessee Whiskey. This is an uncommon variant of Jack and it's only available at travel retail locations (Duty-Free Shops). Rumored to be aged between 5-6 years, this is a bottled-in-bond whiskey that comes in at 100 proof and is selected from the barrels at the top floor of the rickhouses at Jack Daniels. This exclusive was launched in 2015 to replace the brand's Silver Select bottling. Tune in to see what we think of this unique offering from Jack Daniel's.

Fresh Bourbon is for everyone! Started in 2017 by co-owners Tia and Sean Edwards, Fresh Bourbon is an African American owned brand that is right here in Lexington, Kentucky. The bourbon itself has a unique four grain mashbill that includes honey malt. The Fresh Bourbon Distillery was recently opened in the downtown Lexington area. They have an awesome tasting room and plans to expand the footprint and be an entertainment destination. But, how does the bourbon taste? You'll have to listen to find out. We've had the opportunity to do some really cool stuff since we started this journey with all of you. However, this conversation is one of the best we've had yet. For this episode, we had an epic share and conversation with Bruce Russell of Wild Turkey, Dan Shook and Sean Paisley of the famed YouTube channel Bourbon Junkies, and Ryan Alves of Bourbonoutfitter.com/JHOB. Many have said that whiskey is best shared with friends and this conversation is proof of that. Dan and Sean discuss their path from humble beginnings as a YouTube startup all the way to their recent venture into owning their own brand, EverNorth Spirits Company. Bruce discusses what it was like growing up around all things Turkey, his evolution into his current role as associate blender, and also gives us a glimpse into some things to look forward to. This conversation can only be described as the perfect blend. For only the second time in the history of The Mash Up, this episode contacts some bad language. However, we felt that it was necessary to preserve this conversation in its purest form for the community. We hope you enjoy!

The 18th release of the Parker's Heritage Collection is very unique. It features a 14 year old malt whiskey which is finished for four months in deconstructed cognac barrels. The result? You'll have to listen to find out. This isn't the first time Heaven Hill has used malt or cognac finishing in the Parker's series so we were very eager to dive into this one. The conversation is equally as riveting as the whiskey review with Kenny discussing a recent barrel selection at Wild Turkey that is accompanied by an epic story. Only the Mash Up Podcast would kick off bourbon heritage month by reviewing a finished malt whiskey. LOL. In the past, if you were lucky enough to pick a barrel of Elijah Craig at Heaven Hill, chances are that it was watered down to 94 proof. For the last few years, stores and private groups have had the option of selecting at 94 proof or opting for true barrel strength. Recently, Anthony has the opportunity to help the good folks at Jackson's Wine and Spirits select two barrels of Elijah Craig at barrel proof. Jackson's is family owned liquor store right here in Lexington, KY and they always have good barrel picks and other unique bourbons available for purchase. What will the other guys think of this private select and how does it stack up against regular batches and other special picks? This week we decided to switch things up a bit and let you know what it's like when we get together for a good ole bottle share. In this episode, we taste and review some new products from Heaven Hill (Grain to Glass) and also share some blind pours. This is something that we typically do when we aren't recording. Once again, we are joined by our friend and fellow podcaster, Maasak. As always, hilarity ensues as the guys test their palates, tell dad jokes, and discuss a wide variety of topics ranging from bourbon marketing to LeBron James. Courtesy of Kenny, we also get to taste one of the greatest whiskeys ever created. Can you guess what it is? On episode 157 of The Mash Up, we introduced and reviewed Raconteur Rye which is a blended rye whiskey collaboration brought to us by none other than David Jennings (Rare Bird 101) and the good folks over at the WoodWork Collective. Raconteur Rye Batch # 1 was very well received. It sold out instantly and left people clamoring for more. Well...the wait is almost over. Raconteur Rye Batch # 2 will be released in September! Once again, this rye whiskey starts as an MGP product which is expertly finished in different types of barrels. We loved the first release, but how does batch # 2 compare? You'll have to listen to find out. Not only do we have a ton of fun, but we blind batches 1 & 2 to give you the ultimate analysis. This week we welcomed back an old friend on the podcast to help us taste and review the most recent chapter of Little Book. In previous episodes, we reviewed Little Book chapters 3 & 6 and have been pleasantly surprised by these rather unique and great tasting blends. But, will the streak continue? Little Book Chapter 8: The Path Not Taken is a blend of 7 different whiskeys (predominately rye) and comes in at 118.2 proof. But how does it taste? We give our honest and best assessment. In this episode, the guys talk about blending, limited releases, and get into all types of topics not related to bourbon. But how is that different from any other week? It's not. For this very special episode, we had a chance to sit down and discuss Kentucky Senator Bourbon with co-founders Damon Thayer and Andre Regard. Kentucky Senator is a brand that was originally distilled by Crigler & Crigler in Covington, Kentucky and then by Double Spring Distillers in Bardstown. In 2019, Thayer and Regard revived the brand and laid the foundation for what looks to be a very promising brand for years to come. While some non-distiller producers operate under a veil of secrecy, these guys believe in full transparency. They really want to partner with Kentucky distillers to showcase the best of what the bluegrass has to offer. These two gentlemen are true ambassadors of the Commonwealth and the story of Kentucky Senator Bourbon (past, present, and future) is fascinating and inspiring. We had loads of fun recording this episode and hope you enjoy listening. Michter's Toasted Bourbon is a limited release offering that does not come around annually. In fact, since 2014, this whiskey has only been released a total of four times (with the latest being in 2021). We recorded this episode on August 12th. On the very next day, Michter's put out a press release to announce that Toasted Barrel Bourbon would be released this Fall (24') to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first release. We joked throughout the episode about this potentially happening, but now it is a reality so you are definitely going to want to hear our thoughts on this bottle. In addition to this all important bottle review, you will also get to hear about the adventures of our very own Kenny Mills and a recent Bourbon Junkies event that he attended called "Bourbon in a Barn." The Heaven Hill 18 year bourbon is the 3rd release in the Heaven Hill Heritage Collection. With the two previous releases being a 17 year old bourbon and a 20 year old corn whiskey, this limited release is a very small batch blend of 133 barrels that comes in at 120 proof. Even though it carries a pretty hefty MSRP, we are here to tell you whether we think its worth chasing. In this episode, we talk Olympics and Steven and Anthony discuss an impromptu fencing challenge with Kenny as the special guest referee. We also spend an inordinate amount of time talking about the packaging for this bottle. Despite the beautiful blue box, the only thing that matters is the whiskey in the bottle. The short for this week features a newcomer and a classic on steroids. Bottle # 1 is the second release of Old Stubborn and it is a bit different from the first. This bourbon is a blend of 10-12 year old whiskeys from West Virginia and it comes in at 123.8 proof. Bottle # 2 is this year's batch of Maker's Mark 46 Cask Strength. Affectionately known as Bill's recipe, this french oaked wheated bourbon is now an annual limited release, but it is relatively easy to get your hands on. Episode 140 captured what ensued the very first time that a listener sent us some blinds to taste. For this week, another one of our dedicated listeners (Ryan from Texas) was kind enough to send us some things to try. When Ryan reached out and said he would be sending a "care" package with some of his favorites, we felt very honored and humbled. He said he had no expectations and simply wanted to hear our honest opinions of a few whiskeys. So join us this week as we test our palates with this fan sponsored double blind compliments of our friend from Texas. Will we be able to guess age, proof, and distillate? You'll have to listen to find out. Also, you'll be treated to hearing about a recent tour that Kenny went on at Maker's Mark. New Riff Distillery is celebrating 10 years in the biz this summer. Located in Northern Kentucky, we've been big fans of this distillery since they opened in 2014. We were fortunate enough to take our very first trip down to the Jack Daniel's distillery to pick two barrels of whiskey for the Bluegrass Liquor Box (a local liquor store in Georgetown, Kentucky). Though it was our first time in Lynchburg, we took in all the sights and now have a newfound respect for this juggernaut whiskey producer. Two days before we arrived for our pick, the thirteenth version of the special distillery series released at the gift shop. This release is a Twice Barrelled Tennessee Straight Rye Whiskey that started as a 6 1/2 year rye that was then put into a new charred white oak barrel for an additional 2 years. Somehow we manged to get through many episodes without ever reviewing: Blanton's Bourbon: The Original Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey. This bourbon needs no introduction. It is the reason that some of us started collecting and it also still causes traffic jams every time it's released at the Buffalo Trace distillery. Even though we've reviewed a number of other Blanton variants in past episodes, you aren't going to want to miss our take on this iconic bourbon. "The shortest bourbon conversation you're gonna hear all week long" is back and better than ever. Well, it's not necessarily better, but we are starting to get the hang of things. Just a few days ago, the online release of Russell's Reserve 15 Year Bourbon broke the Internet! While many people were hoping to get a bottle, very few were successful. We were lucky enough to snag a bottle at the distillery release. This brand new, ultra age / ultra premium release from Wild Turkey is one of the hottest bottles at the moment. Coming in at 15 years (minimum) and 117.2 proof, some people are calling this one of the best releases of the year. The conversation this week spans a number of topics including the recent 4th of July holiday, barrel picks, and color blindness. Special episode alert! This is the first time we've ever taken The Mash Up on the road. When Hector Garcia (who is a fan and friend of the podcast) asked us to come to his restaurant in Corbin, KY, we couldn't say no. Hector is the co-owner and operator of Brooklyn Brothers Pizzeria in Corbin and he is not only a budding bourbon aficionado, but also the proprietor of some of the best Italian style food we've ever had. This week, we taste and review the newest release in the Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series: The Heart Release. It was rumored that this series would be going away, but it is back with a vengeance. Not only do we give out thoughts on this bottle, but we also taste a number of different blinds and give our thoughts on those. You aren't going to want to miss the joke that Hector pulls on us...let's just say that he is definitely a dedicated listener and knew exactly what he was doing with his mystery blinds. If you are ever between Lexington and Knoxville or just find yourself near Corbin, you are going to want to check out Brooklyn Bros.

Raise a glass to the man who raised you well! That's what the label on the side of this brand new Four Roses Special Barrel Strength Bourbon reads. Released about a week before Father's Day, this distillery only release was meant to honor the dads in our lives but wasn't without controversy. When we recorded this episode, we wondered how one of the highest proof single barrel releases in Four Roses history could be a "tier 3." Turns out that our sensibilities were correct and Four Roses recently offered new labels to people who purchased this bottle to correct the error. But past all of that, what does a 16 year 130 proof plus single barrel bourbon from Four Roses taste like? You'll have to give us a listen to find out. This week, we start off with a very special pour and discuss a wide array of "relaxing" topics. Join us as we raise a glass, have many laughs, and engage in some "pass, try, or buy." -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Partnership(s) Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUP Visit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your order Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

With Steven and Anthony on vacation, Kenny took it upon himself to book guests and record. Unlike other episodes where we give you exquisite details and our patented "pass, try, or buy," this episode is a pure hang between friends. Kenny is joined by none other than RareBird101 (DJ) and Whoryno (Alves). The three of them double blind each other with some excellent pours and engage in a riveting conversation about bourbon memories, brands, and industry trends. While this episode is lengthy and not in the typical format of the show, it is sure to delight the seasoned bourbon drinker and folks just getting into the hobby. The stories and perspective these guys bring is refreshing and the discussion showcases what bourbon is all about. Sit back, pour yourself something good and enjoy this conversation between friends.

It's hard to believe that the Master's Keep series from Wild Turkey has been around for almost 10 years. In that time, we've seen everything from ultra aged Wild Turkey bourbon to different finishing techniques (rum, sherry, toasted) which has made these bottles stand out. The most recent release of the series, dubbed "Triumph," features the oldest ever age-stated rye from the brand. Coming in at 10 years old and 104 proof, the release represents a departure of sorts for a brand that has typically focused more on bourbon than rye. But, what does it taste like? You'll have to join the conversation this week to find out. In this episode, we talk turkey, enthusiast markets, and summer vacation. We also tease an interesting episode that will be dropping soon.

Between vacations, we found the time to get together to bring you another action packed episode. This week, we taste and explore a single barrel cash strength offering from the up and coming Augusta Distillery. Nestled on the banks of the Ohio river in Northern Kentucky, Augusta Distillery released their first bourbon in 2020 and just recently won "best bourbon in the world" at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The Old Route 8 offering that we uncorked this week was selected by a local Lexington retailer and came in at 119 proof. Will this bottle live up the hype that was generated by the Buckner's 13 year bourbon that was deemed best in the world? Join us this week as we talk Disney, footwear, and NBA referees. As per the usual, Kenny offers up multiple blinds on the fly to compare this bottle to and many laughs ensue. This week, we head out toward Bardstown (and also north of the border) to bring you a review of Very Olde St. Nick Ancient Cask 8 Year Old Rye Whiskey. Though the label is pretty old, the distillery is actually quite new. Since 2018, Preservation Distillery has focused on sourcing very unique stocks of whiskey and bottling it under their brands which include: Very Olde St. Nick, Pure Antique, Rare Perfection, and Wattie Boone. Chances are you've seen these bottles in your market, but should you pull the trigger? You'll have to listen to find out. Vacation season is in full swing which means that we may or may not have all the fellas for each episode, but we will always do our best to bring you the best content possible. In this episode, we talk recipes, exploding grills, and Kenny pulls one of the most unexpected blinds in Mash Up history.

Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. is known as the father of the modern day bourbon industry. Not only is he a central figure in creation of what we now know and love as the Buffalo Trace Distillery, but he was also instrumental in the passing of the Bottled-in-Bond Act and even served as Mayor of Frankfort for 16 years. Though his beloved "EH Taylor" label has been owned by many different distilleries over the years, Sazerac purchased the label in 2009, effectively bringing Taylor home. This week, the guys uncork the once a year release of EH Taylor Barrel Proof Bourbon. This is the 12th release of its kind and clocks in at a whopping 131.1 proof. Will this bourbon be "hot to be hot" or will it delight our senses? In this episode, we reflect on a recent night out on the town in Lexington and also do our best Jerky Boys impression while calling the Sazerac customer service number. It's another laugh filled week and we appreciate you coming along for the ride.

There was a rumor floating around that David Jennings aka Rare Bird 101 was going to be in town for an event at Wild Turkey. We figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if he would be willing to join us for a conversation. We knew it was a long shot, but when he said "yes," we couldn't believe it. So, this week, we present a wide ranging conversation with the unofficial mayor of Wild Turkey, Mr. David Jennings. In the episode, you will hear about his journey is whiskey, his unabashed love for Wild Turkey, and you'll get insider info on everything that went into making Raconteur Rye a reality. On top of all of that, Kenny prepares one of the most epic blinds in Mash Up history. This is the longest episode we've ever released, but it is well worth it. Over the past couple weeks, you've heard us talking about the WoodWork Collective and David Jennings aka Rare Bird 101. What do you get when you mix the palate and bourbon prowess of David Jennings with the good folks over at the WoodWork Collective? Well...it's none other than Raconteur Rye! The recently released, limited edition, straight rye whiskey is a blend of three different/expertly finished types of 95/5 MGP rye: traditional new charred oak, cured toasted oak barrel 48 months (air dried), and finally, a mizunara barrel that once held 16 year old Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. These three liquids were expertly married to create the inaugural release of Raconteur Rye. But, what does it taste like? You'll have to listen to find out. This week, the guys enlist an AI bot to help with pronunciation of the brand name and laugh their way through another session of serious whiskey conversation.

Orphan Barrel whiskeys have been around since 2014. As the story goes, each bottle in this series represents stocks of whiskey that were hidden away and nearly forgotten in the back of rickhouses and distilleries. The newest release in the Orphan Barrel series is Indigo's Hour Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This is a blend of straights from Kentucky and Indiana that is 18 years old and has a mashbill of 68% corn, 28% rye, and 4% malted barley. If you've never had any Orphan Barrel offerings, you'll find this week's discussion rather intriguing. If you have had some of the previous offerings, you'll be delighted to know that we give our take on where we think this one stacks up against some of the older releases. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of acquiring the famed Bernheim Distillery and the Old Fitzgerald brand, Heaven Hill went deep into the "tanks" and bottled a very special bourbon. Distilled in 1999 and aged for 13 years, this VVS (very very special) Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond decanter contains the very juice that Heaven Hill deemed as exceptional all the way back in 2012. It's a modern day dusty of sorts! If you listened to episode 120 (and we highly recommend that you do), you heard us talking what we thought might become of the famed Old Fitzgerald Decanter Series, but none of us saw this release coming. Do we think it's as exceptional as the distillery employees thought more than 10 years ago? How does it compare to other favorites of ours in the series? This episode is full of surprises that you won't want to miss. When a listener asks you to review a bottle...you don't just review that bottle...you review the entire vertical plus one more blind. Lol. This week, we dive into Campari's Whiskey Barons Collection which features, Bond & Lillard, Old Ripy, and W.B. Saffell. These 375ml bottles have been released since 2017, but can still be found in some markets. Even though these bottles are billed as coming from the American Medicinal Spirits Company, they are actually Wild Turkey distillate. They honor the traditions of the early whiskey distillers in Anderson County. But, how do they taste? We were only asked to review W.B. Saffell, but we give you perspective on each bottle. Do our thoughts on each bottle match yours? We'd love to hear what you think. Most of the conversation for this week is focused on the blinds, but we also talk about a near miss at Keeneland and something we've noticed about bourbon distribution in our old Kentucky home.

OCD stands for Old Crow Distillery and #5 is an ode to the fermentation tanks on this hallowed property where something historic was found. Glenns Creek Distillery sits on the same property as the original Old Crow Distillery. While they offer a number of different products, the one we are tasting and reviewing this week, OCD #5, has a unique story behind it. This high corn bourbon mashbill is distilled using yeast resurrected from one of the fermentation tanks at the old distillery. It isn't every day that you get a chance to taste a piece of modern history. Join us this week as we talk about old department stores, barrel picks, Facebook, and Zuckerbirds. Bourbon Pursuit is the most popular bourbon podcast in the game. Starting back in 2015 and being a large part of our own personal bourbon journeys, they now have over 800 episodes and are known as "the official podcast of bourbon." Fast forward to 2021, Kenny Coleman and Ryan Cecil took the smashing success of their podcast and started their own spirits company. For this episode, we are tasting two of their core offerings: Pursuit United Bourbon and Pursuit United Rye. Both of these whiskeys are eclectic blends that include distillate from across multiple states. Is this "an adventure in bold flavors" that the brand promises or will we be left wanting more? Join us as we engage in more march madness talk, put these two whiskeys through their paces with multiple blinds, and reflect on what Bourbon Pursuit means to us.

First debuting in 2019, Bulleit 12 Year Old Rye Whiskey was available for a limited amount of time and then was seemingly gone. During a recent trip to a liquor store, one of the fellas noticed this bottle sitting on the front counter and immediately purchased it. In 1924, Calvin Coolidge delivered the very first radio address from the White House, the Summer Olympics were held in Paris, and...and...Owsley Brown took barrels of whiskey with different mash bills to a warehouse on Howard Street in Louisville, KY and bottled them as Old Forester. The Pacific Northwest is known for many things, but one of its best kept secrets might be the Camas Whiskey Club. Founded in 2023, this small, but dedicated group of individuals get together regularly for tastings and have also used the power of the brown water for charity. A couple months ago, the founder of the group (Shawn) reached out to us on Facebook to tell us how much he enjoyed the podcast. The praise was enough, but what came next was unexpected and amazing. Shawn sent us a "care" package which contained blind samples and three custom Camas Whiskey Club Glencairns. He told us we didn't have to talk about this on our podcast, but we wouldn't have it any other way! So join us this week as we test our palates and do a true double blind tasting compliments of our friends at the Camas Whiskey Club. Will we be able to guess age, proof, and distillate? The shear length of the episode this week signifies that we had a lot to discuss. Recently, our esteemed whiskey tasting panel completed the "Best of 2023" competition. This "best of" has been going on for the better part of four years, but this is the first time we are discussing the results on the podcast. To assist with this discussion, we are joined by our good friend Ryan Alves from bourbonoutfitter.com. The format/foundation of the whiskey competition was co-founded by Kenny and Ryan and they have been nice enough to include us in recent years. Even though there have been many opinions about which whiskey was best of 2023, our competition is unique and you'll definitely be intrigued by the results. In addition to the "best of" discussion, we also taste and review the newly released Old Stubborn Straight Wheated Bourbon from Rising Tide Spirits. Ed Bley is an OG in the bourbon community. His popularity stems from the single barrel selections and blends that he personally curated when he was the spirits manager at Cork N Bottle in Northern Kentucky. Shortly after stepping away from that position, Ed founded Rising Tide Spirits and Old Stubborn is the very first release of his new venture! Will this release be as good as we expect or leave us wanting more? This episode is jam packed with a lot of good stories, commentary on whiskey, and laughs. Time flies when you’re having fun. It’s incredibly hard to believe that we’ve been doing this podcast for 3 years! What started as a way for us to connect during the pandemic has blossomed into something that we couldn’t have imagined. Thank you for your support. For this anniversary episode, we decided to taste and review Old Forester Rye whiskey. In 2019, Old Forester released their first new mashbill in 150 with this rye whiskey release. Instead of just reviewing the acclaimed 100 proof shelfer, we decided to taste it against the more limited barrel proof selections. Our tasting notes and results may shock you. But then again, if you listen regularly, you probably won’t be surprised. We strive to give you honest reviews every week and we are incredibly humbled by your support. To three years! Cheers! -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Visit bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUP Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

The holidays might be over, but the fun continues. This week, we welcome our first ever female co-host to the podcast to discuss a very interesting pour. The Old Elk Distillery was founded in 2013 by Curt Richardson and proudly calls Fort Collins, Colorado home. With longtime MGP distiller Greg Metze at the helm, Old Elk's "quiet on purpose" motto has been tested by the excellent and buzzworthy products they are releasing. In this episode, we taste and review Old Elk Cigar Cut Island Blend. Coming in at 111.7 proof and boasting four different types of base distillate with secondary cask finishing of 2 years (sherry, port, rum, and sauternes), there is no telling what we will think of this one. While we are happy that you are back with us for another week, you might want to watch out! Kenny is airing some grievances, but Anthony and the special guest host help bring him back down to earth. We are happy that you are part of our herd. New Riff Distillery was founded in 2014 by Ken Lewis. Just south of Cincinnati in the heart of Northern Kentucky -- this urban style distillery has gone from craft to established purveyor of spirits in record time. This week, we taste and review one of their newest (and oldest) offerings to date: New Riff High Note 8 year old 100% Malted Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey . If you wanted to hear our thoughts on New Riff prior to this week, you would have to go all the way back to episode 11! What took us so long and will this new limited offering showcase what New Riff can do? Or will it show that they have a long way to go? You might be surprised by what we think. We'd love to have you join us this week as we welcome back Jason from Our Cynic Culture and laugh our way through this week's bottle. Seriously, we like to laugh, but this episode really showcases what it's like to sip whiskey and create memories amongst friends around the holidays. This is something that we hope you are all doing this holiday season. The holidays are one of the best times to share and enjoy good bourbon. We were lucky enough to win this bottle in a lottery and were looking for the perfect occasion to open it. This week, we taste and review a very rare release: Pride of Anderson County Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This bottle represents one of the oldest and highest proof single barrel releases to ever come from the Wild Turkey Distillery. Rare Bird 101 and Rare Character Whiskey combined forces to bring us this ultra premium release. The bottle has not been without controversy due its price, but what does it taste like? You'll have to listen to hear our thoughts on this one. For the first time in the history of the podcast, we welcome a guest host from Our Cynic Culture. The conversation is as fun and lively as ever. We get quite a few requests to review bottles that are readily available. As the holiday season approaches, we felt it would be appropriate to blind three shelfies priced under $30. The three bourbons that we blind and review this week are: Cooper's Craft Barrel Reserve, Wild Turkey 101, and Elijah Craig Small Batch. All of these bottles have been dubbed by many in the whiskey community as "good values." But, is that really the case? Join us this week as we laugh a lot, talk about value bourbon, and special holiday drinks. Which one of these sub $30 bottles will come out on top? Perhaps it will be...none of them? How could that be? What else is there to say? It's BTAC season! For this week, we taste and review one of the most revered bourbons in all of the land which is George T. Stagg. Coming from the annual release of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, this years version is a little over 15 years in age and clocks in at a blistering 135 proof. This bourbon is the shear definition of premium. Even though we were passed over again for media samples by BT, Kenny hustled his *ss off to get us this bottle. So, is GTS the standard bearer? The almighty? The granddaddy of them all? In years past, that's certainly been the case....but what about this year? You'll have to listen to find out. Spoiler alert: this is by far the most complicated pass, try, or buy in the history of the podcast! -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Partnership Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUP Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

The whiskey that we taste and review this week started out as an 8-year old Kentucky bourbon and then traveled to Japan for finishing in wine, sherry, and ex-yamazaki casks. Woooo! That's a voyage that even Jefferson's would be jealous of. This limited release collaboration from Beam Suntory is the first of it's kind -- but, is it any good? You'll have to listen to find out. Join us this week as we talk about gas station sushi and try to figure out who the other dude is. Also, you'll get to hear a story about how one of us was mistaken for a comedic icon. Maysville, Kentucky is known as the “birthplace of bourbon” and this week we taste and review a whiskey that dates all the way back to 1876. Old Pogue Master’s Select is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey that is produced in very small batches and only available in a handful of states. The original Pogue Distillery closed its doors in 1920, suffering the same fate as many other brands during prohibition. The 5th and 6th generations of the Pogue family revived the brand in 2004 and built a new distillery in 2012. They have been producing bourbon and rye ever since and you will be getting our take on one of their core products. You’ll also get to hear about a recent barrel pick experience that we had at Four Roses amongst other lively banter. Michter's 10 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has been around for quite some time. While "M10" bourbon is always a favorite amongst Michter's fans and enthusiasts alike, the 2023 release has been receiving some very praiseworthy reviews. Even though we could take the word of others about this years release, it's always more fun to find out for ourselves! Lux Row Distillers has put out some excellent products over the last few years. Even though you've heard of Blood Oath and Double Barrel Bourbon, the bottle we've chosen for this week is probably sitting on a shelf somewhere near you. Old Ezra 7 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey, is a bold and robust rye that is a blend of two different MGP mashbills. This bottle definitely flies under the radar, but should it? In 2018, Woodford Reserve debuted their Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey. As the third permanent extension of the Woodford line and the increasing popularity of malt whiskeys, we felt it necessary to sip and review this shelfie. This whiskey is a barely malt (coming in at 51% malt/47% corn/2% rye) and the tastings notes emphasize nutty characteristics and chocolate. Is that what we will taste? You never know. It's a big week on the Mash Up. Not only are we reviewing one of the hottest bottles in the land, but we are also welcoming back our brother in bourbon, Steven. 13th Colony Distillery has been around since 2009, but they gained massive notoriety last year when they released their double oaked bourbon. Maryland-style rye came roaring back onto the scene over the past few years and one of the companies most closely associated with its resurgence is Sagamore Spirit. Founded in 2013 by Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank, Sagamore Spirit Distillery is in the heart of Baltimore, Maryland and has a history that is tied to champion thoroughbred horses and limestone-filtered water. Sounds a lot like Kentucky. Well, we're not in Kentucky anymore and this week we taste and review Sagamore Spirit Double Oaked Rye Whiskey. In episode 107 of our podcast, we tasted Elijah Craig Barrel Proof batch B523 which was the first in the history of the release to carry a sub 12 year age statement. The newest batch of ECBP (C923) has been one of the most hyped due to the fact that it carries a whopping 13 year, 7 month age statement. This "technically" makes it the oldest release of this product to date. Instead of our normal format, we called an audible and decided to blind this most recent batch of ECBP against two previous batches. The conversation this week is heavily focused on this blind, but we also get into a recent bottle share experience and give our general thoughts on age statements. Something special happened at Star Hill Farm in Loretto, Kentucky this past month. After many years speculation, Marker's Mark finally released something loyal enthusiasts and newbies alike have been waiting for. Marker's Mark Cellar Aged is a blend of 11 and 12 year old bourbons that started off aging in traditional rickhouses and was then moved to a temperature controlled cellar to finish the aging process. Outside of some highly sought after commemorative bottles, this has easily become one of Maker's most popular releases. People in the bourbon community have been going bonkers for this bottle. How does it compare to Wellerz and other nicely aged wheated bourbons? If you want an honest take, you've come to the right place. Join us this week as we talk bad behavior in the bourbon groups, parkas, and the end of bourbon heritage month. You know that we favor Kentucky - almost to a fault. When we heard that Garrison Brothers annual Cowboy Bourbon release was gonna be hazmat, that definitely got our attention. Join us this week as we taste and review one of the self-proclaimed finest whiskies to come from Texas. In 2006, the Garrison Brothers distillery was granted the first stiller's permit for bourbon outside of Kentucky and Tennessee, which makes it the oldest legal bourbon distillery in Texas. This is a first on The Mashup. We have zero expectations of "Texas bourbon" and a healthy amount of skepticism. You'll have to listen to find out if this years release of cowboy bourbon is a must have or an easy pass for the fall bourbon season. In 2021, it was announced that Wild Turkey's Camp Nelson "C" warehouse would be decommissioned. Though this was done for safety reasons and due to the age of the building, it left turkey lovers a bit bewildered as this warehouse had a reputation for housing some excellent single barrels through the years. On the heels of this news, Wild Turkey announced a brand new release: Russell’s Reserve Single Rickhouse. The first annual limited release was made up of 72 barrels from the famed Camp Nelson "C" warehouse. Join us this week as we taste and review this highly sought after release from the past year. However, in the midst of the speculation, Heaven Hill surprised us all when they announced the "Spring 2023" decanter series release of Old Fitz. These week, we used our midwestern sensibilities and traveled to north to the Great Lakes State to taste and try a bourbon that was gifted to us during a recent barrel pick experience. From just north of the Motor City, Valentine Distilling Co. burst onto the scene a few years ago by sourcing some excellent MGP distillate. "The original wheated bourbon" has been the focal point of our podcast in the past, but we've never rated and reviewed this variant of the Wellerz product line. Weller Antique 107 is somewhat of a modern classic bourbon that is passionately referred to as OWA (old weller antique). While this whiskey is abundant in many states, it seems to be more elusive in Kentucky these days. But is it worthy of the status it has been given in the bourbon community and all the hype? We will give you the definitive answer. Join us this week as Steven returns to action and talks about a recent beer mishap. Rice Whiskey? Really? Is this some kind of joke? Our partners over at bourbonoutfitter.com surprised us and sent this bottle so you know that we had to give it a try. Seeking something unique to do with their rice crop, J.T. Meleck Distillers came up with the idea to first make a rice vodka and then quickly moved on to making whiskey. Coming in at 122.5 proof, this 100% rice whiskey was aged 5 years in a 53 gallon new charred oak barrel, following a process that is very similar to the way that our beloved bourbon is made. Amburana finishing has taken the bourbon world by storm. However, not everyone is on board with this latest craze. People seem to either love or hate it. Last week, we traveled out west to taste a finished bourbon and this week we stick to our own backyard. RD One Spirits, established right here in Lexington, KY in 2020, is a relatively new craft distiller that is making a splash in the bourbon world. On the advice of one of our best listeners who recently visited RD One on his trip to Kentucky, we taste and review RD One's Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished with Brazilian Amburana Wood. Normally we stay within the state of Kentucky, but this week we ventured far out West to Sonoma County, California to taste and review Ammunition Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Cabernet Sauvignon Barrels. Some people have called this the best allocated bourbon of 2022. Others claimed that it was overrated. We are here to settle the debate once and for all! This week we crack open a bottle of Parker's Heritage Double Barreled Blend Bourbon. This is the 16th offering in this series from the Heaven Hill Distillery that honors the legacy of former master distiller Parker Beam. The double barreled blend is a mixture of well aged bourbon (13 & 15 yr barrels) that was matured for an additional month in newly charred barrels. As we taste this bourbon, you'll get to hear us converse about an extra special tasting that Kenny recently took part in, new headphones for Steven, and we'll even check back in with Anthony to see if he can remember what he has and hasn't tasted. When you think of Florida - what comes to mind? Surely it’s sunny beaches and top quality oranges. Probably the last thing that anyone associates Florida with is bourbon. However, a distillery located in the heart of America’s oldest city is seeking to change that. St. Augustine Distillery, which was established in 2013, produces numerous spirits and one of its most popular products is Florida Straight Bourbon. This week, we taste and review this bottle and talk about numerous things such as vacation bourbon hunting, shelf clogging, and if Florida wheat is the same as other kinds of wheat. While we probably won’t have an answer to that, we do promise that you will be entertained. Pass, try, or buy…you’ll have to listen to find out. Cheers to the weekend. -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Music : All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

Finally, Steven has come back…to @themashupky podcast! For this momentous occasion - we have a special bottle that some might refer to as a “treasure.” Blanton’s Takara Black single barrel bourbon whiskey is produced right in our backyard (Frankfort, Kentucky) and then exported over to Japan where it has been enjoyed for many years. Thanks to a generous new neighbor, we were about to get our hands on this sought after version of Blanton’s. Will it live up to the hype and how will it compare to other exports we’ve tried? Join us this week as we finally get to catch up with each other. Topics include the famous Stanley Hotel (and the bourbon within), Kentucky Derby shenanigans, and Total Wine’s dusty bourbon lottery. It’s the reunion you’ve been waiting for and the best bourbon conversation you’re gonna hear all week long. Bernheim Barrel Proof Wheat Whiskey is newest edition to Heaven Hill's barrel proof series, joining Larceny and Elijah Craig. This new offering is between 7-9 years old and clocks in at a hefty 118.8 proof. Similar to it's other barrel proof counterparts, this wheated barrel proof offering is set to be released three times a year. Will the love fest for Heaven Hill continue? Or will the fellas decide that this wheated whiskey might need a little more time in the barrel? You'll have to give us a listen this week to find out. Other things we discusss are bourbon related things in Midway, KY, Y2K, and how many Heaven Hill labels have come and gone in favor of more premium offerings. Heaven Hill recently announced that Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon would no longer carry a 12 year age statement. Instead, each batch will have a variable age statement which can be higher or lower than 12 years depending on which barrels make up each batch. This news upset a lot of whiskey geeks, especially since Heaven Hill has become famous for dropping/reinventing age statements over the past few years. Even though we reviewed ECBP in a previous episode (34), we felt it necessary to review the newest batch (B523) since it is the first to carry a sub 12 year age statement. Will we like this as much as previous batches or will we feel cheated? The conversation this week isn't just about bourbon - it's about burgers, video games, and much more! -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

The Railbird Music Festival in Lexington, Kentucky debuted in 2019 and has quickly become one of the most anticipated annual events for lovers of music and bourbon alike. After some hiccups and extremely hot weather in 2022 left concert goers bewildered, this years version of Railbird looks like it could be the best yet. For this week, we got our hands on one of the many single barrel picks that will be available exclusively at this year's festival compliments of the good folks at Justin's House of Bourbon. The Penelope Architect bourbon series features different mashbills and a variety of french oak finishing options. You'll get to hear about how this Railbird pick of Penelope Architect came to be from one of the people who helped select it. Even though the original mashers are still on hiatus, Kenny and Caleb are back along with Anthony to talk about a variety of topics including what you can expect at this year's festival and what we think of this Penelope pick. When it comes to bourbon whiskey - there are so many things to explore which is why we love bourbon so much. This week, we taste and review a relatively new offering from Buffalo Trace which is a Kosher Wheat Recipe Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Partnering with the Chicago Rabbinical Society, this whiskey debuted in 2020 as one of the first mainstream Kosher Whiskey offerings. Each barrel of Kosher Wheat Recipe bourbon is Kosher designated and satisfies Passover requirements including being sold under witness from the cRc. You don't want to miss this week as we welcome a new voice to the table and have some fun talking about parking lot pours, what it means to be a buffalo trace tater, and how little we know about Kosher whiskey. Don't forget to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and definitely let us know what you think of this bottle in the comment section on Instagram. You spoke and we listened! This week, we have another action packed episode that involves malted whiskey! Founded in 2021 by Pablo Moix and Peter Nevenglosky, Rare Character Whiskey Company has bottled some unique and rare whiskeys, building a cult like following in the process. In this episode, we taste and review !4! different Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskeys from Rare Character's "Exceptional Series." Even though this style of whiskey is one that is relatively unknown by traditional bourbon drinkers, we think you'll be paying a lot of attention to it in the future. Because we decided to review four different whiskeys for this week, there wasn't a lot of time for small talk -- but we did manage to converse about the liquor aisle at Target and some other fun topics like the Rare Character Clubhouse. Will we like this Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey as much as our beloved bourbon and rye? Old Louisville Whiskey Co. is a family owned business that strives to deliver premium whiskies to ALL. The husband and wife duo, Amine and Beth Karaoud, are self-proclaimed “whiskey aficionados'' and they have spent the last few years building a whiskey brand that honors both the rich history of the Old Louisville neighborhood as well as the long-standing tradition of Kentucky bourbon making. Old Louisville offers an array of unique whiskies. The one that we review this week is a single barrel pick from a very unusual MGP mashbill (51% corn / 49% malt). This week, Anthony is joined by a special guest host who was mentioned many episodes ago for chugging bourbon in a liquor store. We hope that you will listen along as we go through our standard shout outs, tasting notes, and other lively topics. You'll get to hear a first hand account of how this particular barrel of whiskey was selected from Old Louisville and what we think about it. Did someone say dusty? You knew it would happen sooner or later, but for the first time in the history of #themashupky - we taste and review a vintage bourbon whiskey. This week, we head back in time to 1998 (and overseas) to sip and review a Maker’s Mark Black Wax “Bourbon” which was made exclusively for the Japanese market. Rumored to be aged approximately 2-3 years longer than the standard red wax Maker’s and coming in at 95 proof, this bottle has become sought after in recent years, especially those getting into dusties. But, should you be looking to add this one to your collection? As we sip this week, we reminisce about 1998 and think about how this expression compares to what Maker’s offers today. Also, we talk Buffalo Trace Distillery expansion. What comes to mind when you think of bourbon produced in Indiana? Most would probably say MGPI. However, there are many other distillers who make great whiskey and call Indiana home. Huber’s Starlight Distillery was first a family farm and winery, and now it has become a staple attraction of bourbon lovers in Indiana and beyond. This week we taste and review Carl T. Huber’s Double Oaked Bourbon. This roughly four year old bourbon goes through a primary aging process and then is finished in toasted french oak. How will this whiskey stack up against some of the other toasted and double oaked expressions that we’ve tried? Give us 30 minutes of your time and you will find out. Hot on the heels of last weeks episode, we have a bottle that has been dubbed by many as the best value in bourbon. Is it a Beam or Heaven Hill product? Nope. It’s Sazerac’s own Very Old Barton 100 proof straight bourbon whiskey. This bourbon is a bottom shelfer that has been a fan favorite budget for years. It used to carry a 6 year age statement and that statement was dropped in favor of a “bottled in bond” designation. The bottle that you can find on the shelf currently has no age statement and simply states that this whiskey is “crafted.” Join us this week as we talk about Steven’s recent trip to Nashville and discuss whether we’ve found the perfect budget bourbon. Also, we give a special birthday shoutout to one of our favorite people in the bourbon community. Old StoneHammer was the nickname given to Kentucky’s 10th Governor, Thomas Metcalfe. He was a stone mason by trade and was elected as governor in 1828. Although Metcalfe passed a long time ago, his memory is alive and well in our bottle for this week: StoneHammer Single Barrel Bourbon. This bourbon is a sazerac made product that is specifically sold in Kroger Wine and Spirits shops. Many people underestimated Thomas Metcalfe and he ended up becoming governor. Every now and again we like to cheat on bourbon with, well, more whisky. This week, we went deep into the cabinet and found a bottle of Crown Royal Peach Whisky. When this bottled debuted 2019, it was very hard to find. Those that were lucky enough to find a bottle saw signs at the point of purchase that read, “limit 1.” Fast forward to today, Crown Royal Peach Whisky is now one of the best selling in the flavored whiskey category. Made with real Georgia peaches, this spirit is not something we would typically review on The Mash Up. But, we are two wild and crazy guys so you never know what you are going to get. Maryland rye whiskey was a big deal until prohibition brought its production to a grinding halt in the 1920s. Arrgh! Ahoy, Matey! This week we take to the seas and uncork a bottle of Jefferson’s Ocean Aged At Sea Wheated Bourbon. This bourbon is typically aged on land for 6-8 years and the loaded onto a research ship where it ages for an additional 5-10 months. Uncommon as it was when Jefferson’s first started doing this, aging whiskey on the water is quickly becoming something that more distillers are considering. What do we think about this sea breezy bourbon? You’ll have to listen this week to find out. Also, as an added bonus you’ll get to hear Anthony botch more geography and talk about his struggle to taste whiskey post covid. Clyde May was a decorated military veteran and a prolific bootlegger that was once the most wanted moonshiner in Alabama. From most wanted to most loved, Clyde May’s whiskey is now the official state spirit of Alabama. Kentucky and Alabama might share a lot of sports rivalries, but bourbon can always bring us together. For this week, we review and taste Clyde May’s Straight Bourbon Whiskey. The enriching conversation has us wondering what happened to a pair of Nike shoes that went missing and whether fall bourbon season will be fruitful? Who is the most famous Colonel in the history of Kentucky? While most might think the obvious answer is Colonel Sanders, bourbon lovers would probably disagree and say that Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. holds that title. Remember when O.K.I. went from being a shelfer to one of the most revered MGP sourced whiskies in the bourbon industry? New Riff Distilling was the original proprietor of the O.K.I brand, but they phased it out when their own distillate came of age. In 2020, Ohio based entrepreneurs Jake Warm and Chad Brizendine acquired the brand, started releasing single barrel MGP sourced bourbon, and the excitement surrounding O.K.I. quickly returned. For this week, we sip and review their very first mainstream release known as O.K.I. Reserve Blended Bourbon Whiskey. We’ve dubbed this MGP sourced whiskey as the “kitchen sink” since the blend contains 5 of its most popular mashbills from the factory in Indiana.
