In this episode, Doug and Dr. Talia take on “defensiveness” as the most common maladaptive self-protective coping strategy in relationships. As you all know, that doesn’t tend to go well. We feel attacked, defend ourselves, or maybe we roll our eyes, sigh heavily and tell our partner they misunderstood or they are too sensitive. We might not realize that we are creating a rupture by not validating their experience in that moment, but we are. Tune in to learn practical strategies to take that crucial momentary pause and learn to respond differently in those moments. Your partner will thank you!

Nothing makes our intentions to grow and change, to start a good habit, stop a bad one, feel more poignant and urgent than sitting at the bedside of the dying. We think we have problems? We probably don't even notice the petty things we complain about, the ways we feel sorry for ourselves, or the things we take for granted. In this live recorded episode, Dr Talia and Doug have the honor of speaking with Kelly Grosklags, LICSW, Grief Therapist, Podcaster (See My Grief) and author of "A Comforted Heart" and "When Love Meets Grief" about her 30 years of experience sitting with the dying and their families. We ask her what she has found are the most common themes of what we should not spend another second worrying about, we dive into peoples' near-death experiences and related epiphanies, why some find comfort in religion and spirituality, how to be a compassionate witness and support person for the dying and their family, and differentiate between grief and depression. Yes Yes, the best predictor of future behavior might be past behavior, but giving the benefit of the doubt allows your relationship and your partner to grow. In this third of a six part mini-sode series “How to Love Better”, Doug and Dr Talia offer their favorite and most used couples’ therapy nuggets of wisdom. This week we talk about where each of us lies on the continuum of authenticity vs harmony in our love relationships. We tend to give our partner what we most desire. Those valuing “authenticity” (sometimes at the cost of harmony) feel most connected to their partner through honesty, sharing their thoughts, feelings, observations, and are more free to share constructive feedback and state their needs with their partners, hoping for a reciprocation in effort. On the other hand, those valuing “harmony” (also often at the cost of authenticity) value a general feeling of calm, ease, positivity, joy, and hope for a reciprocal “going with the flow for the greater good” in their interactions with their partner. Both ways of being in the world are often in reaction to family of origin patterns that we are either seeking to recreate, healthy or not, because the interactions feel like home to us, or to regulate our fried nervous systems, or hopefully to create a connection that feels healthier and stronger than the one we grew up in. Which is superior? A balance is what we seek, but what we do know is that you can have authenticity without harmony (not an enjoyable relationship perhaps), but you cannot have true harmony without authenticity. Enjoy! This week we urge you to stay in the discomfort of having a loving but tough conversation with your partner. “Don’t Drop the Rope” speaks to the idea that when our nervous system is short-circuiting in a trauma response; fight, flight or freeze, let’s try to stick with it if we can, or at least acknowledge their bid for partnership along with our need to calm down, and reassure our partner we will circle back to resolve it as soon as we are regulated. In this first of a six part mini-sode series “How to Love Better”, Doug and Dr Talia offer their favorite and most used couples’ therapy nuggets of wisdom. This week we focus on “If you don’t do your your work, everyone around you will have to”. The idea is that the benefit of doing your work, owning your past, your trauma, your triggers, your unmet needs, is so great. You will be changing dysfunctional and toxic relationship patterns, you will be empowered to communicate your thoughts, feelings, needs and boundaries, you will stop feeling victimized by others’ bad behavior and you will find more fulfillment and joy in your relationship life. On the flip-side, we argue the cost of not doing your work is too damaging. You will be perpetuating unhealthy patterns and continue to think others are the problem. You might even blame them for disregulating you rather than feel responsible for your own reaction, communication, and triggers. To “own” your triggers is to be freed from the unconscious toxic relationship patterns that are no longer serving you. We encourage you to level up in your precious relationship skills. Divorce is not the end, and it definitely does not need to be a black ominous mark in your life story. In this episode, Doug and Dr Talia dive into Love After Divorce! Many of us get married young in our 20s with hearts full of hope and sporting a fresh pair of rose colored glasses. We live footloose and fancy free, no responsibilities, no real problems, and then a myriad of changes happen during those next two decades that can challenge and change us to our core. Sometimes the external strains of real married life; unsupportive in-laws, purchasing a house, financial trouble, having children and all of the complications co-parenting can bring, or even something innocuous like finding a new community, hobby, or religion and growing passionately in that direction, but not with your partner. Maybe one of the partner’s develops mental illness or chemical dependency, maybe they have an affair, maybe you do. We are all human; not everyone has done their work, is an amazing communicator, or is willing to be self reflective and own their behaviors that are straining the relationship. In which case, let’s talk about Love After Divorce. In this episode, Dr Talia and Doug talk boundaries with Dr Catherine Cleveland. Boundaries really get a bad rap. We think of them as entitled, cold, rejecting, and whiny. Well, the joke is on us. The fewer boundaries we have with our loved ones, the more those relationships are fraught with irritation, resentment and even bubbling rage. "They should already know they are asking too much", we say to ourselves. "They should intuit that I hate when they drone on about my day." "Can't they see I am overwhelmed and can't take another thing on?" And then we say "go on", "sure, honey", "no problem", and then guess what? We add to our pile of resentment towards someone we care about that ultimately ends up leaking out of us with sarcasm, eye rolls and passive-aggressive snarkiness. What is the antidote? Boundaries! Let's rebrand this bad boy. If we understand our own values and communicate them clearly and lovingly, we eliminate over 50% of our interpersonal frustration. The other 50% of our frustration is most likely that we are not being honest with ourselves about our own needs and preferences. Well, we will help you with that! Meet our guest Dr Catherine Cleveland. She is a PhD-trained licensed mental health counselor who is deeply passionate about assisting individuals in rural and local communities with their personal challenges. She founded Cleveland Emotional Health, LLC, and developed The Cleveland Emotional Health Residency Program for master’s and PhD-level graduates, dedicated to promoting distinguished mental health counseling. She also wrote the Book The Four Essential Pillars of Boundary Setting: A practice-informed guide to Elevate your Empowerment, Authenticity and Self-Worth. https://a.co/d/03QpghE3 We’re Not Fine Family, for quick and easy to digest takeaways from each episode and so much more, join our Patreon Memberships starting at $1/month. In this episode, Dr. Talia Jackson and Doug Jensen discuss the five main personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The importance of understanding and accepting different personality traits in ourselves and others is also discussed. The conversation covers how different personality traits can impact relationships, mentioning specific disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, borderline personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Today’s topic is Dating with Daddy Issues in honor of Father’s Day. Here’s to all of the amazing dad’s out there who are showing up for their children with interest, affection, tenderness and consistency. You are changing worlds and preventing attachment issues. We applaud you! Today’s episode focuses on the wounds we carry with us when we have unmet needs from our own fathers’ rejection, disinterest, criticism, infidelity, disappearance… All of these unmet needs affect our adult relationships and influence who we are attracted to. The first part of this episode, Doug and Dr. Talia talk about the attachment issues that can arise from our father wounds. Then we invite Melissa Rogers, expert matchmaker from our most listened to episode from last June 2023, Let’s F#*%ing Date, into our conversation. She shares her experience as expert and dater. He started experiencing symptoms of Anxiety and OCD from an early age with no understanding of what was happening to him. The disparity between his perfect external presentation and his quiet internal suffering grew until he could take it no more. He chose to stop running and hiding from his mental illness, and instead integrated the diagnoses into his life, ultimately setting him free and starting him on a healing journey that turned into becoming a therapist specializing in OCD and Anxiety. In this episode, Dr. Talia and Doug tackle one of the most common relationship problems; mismatched sex drives. In many couples, there is one individual with a more robust libido, who feels enough burning desire for intimacy that they are the default initiator, often creating a pursuer and distancer dynamic, leaving one member of the couple feeling undesirable and rejected and the other member of the couple feeling overwhelmed, maybe even avoidant, and generally terrible that they are not able to satisfy their partner. We share 12 great conversations starters to connect with your partner around libido compatibility and sexual desires, and we go over many potential causes of the libido mismatch. In this episode, Dr Talia and Doug sit with Gao as she takes us on her complex and unexpected mothering journey while needing to face her own mother wounds. “Why doesn’t my mother love me?” and “What is a mother without her children” are a few of the questions echoing throughout this episode. Every one of us can see ourselves in this episode, honoring the mother shaped hole, the insecurities and attachment issues that can arise in the wake of a primary caregiver that can not or will not meet your basic needs for love and belonging. https://calendly.com/magneticleader/consultation https://www.instagram.com/gaomotsemme.magneticconfidence?igsh=dmk0aWYwMzVuaHpw She is offering a free 45 minute consultation and she invites people to schedule that on her Calendly link We're Not Fine https://werenotfine.com Shop the Pod: https://werenotfine.com/shop Instagram: @werenotfinepod Doug Jensen Profile: https://werenotfine.com/our-team/ Email: contact@werenotfine.com IG: douglasljensen Twitter: dougjensen4Cs Dr. Talia Jackson Profile: https://werenotfine.com/our-team/ Email: contact@werenotfine.com IG: @drtaliajackson Twitter: @Talia.Jackson77

In this mailbag episode, Doug and Dr. Talia hear from two people completely fed up with their spouse and ready for a divorce, but we feel that their decisions might be premature! We share the ingredients necessary to determine whether or not it’s time to throw in the towel. Is there willingness on both sides to work through this issue? In this episode, Dr Talia and Doug talk to Minneapolis based, friendship-focused writer and podcaster, Nina Badzin. Your friend hurt you badly. Until now you have never needed to have a difficult conversation about your friendship, but if you don’t, the friendship won’t survive. What do you do? To determine whether your friendship is salvageable, think about these three things. How meaningful is this relationship to you, was the deep cut a sign of the person’s character or an off day, and how are they responding to you sharing your hurt? Romantic relationship betrayals are more obvious, and so are the dealbreakers. But when you can have many friends and don’t have to choose only one, we want to help you determine whether this friendship will continue to elevate your life or continue to hurt you. We know you have all experienced a painful rift in a friendship, let us help you navigate! https://ninabadzin.com https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-nina-conversations-about-friendship/id1576473592 We're Not Fine https://werenotfine.com Shop the Pod: https://werenotfine.com/shop Instagram: @werenotfinepod Doug Jensen Profile: https://werenotfine.com/our-team/ Email: contact@werenotfine.com IG: douglasljensen Twitter: dougjensen4Cs Dr. Talia Jackson Profile: https://werenotfine.com/our-team/ Email: contact@werenotfine.com IG: @drtaliajackson Twitter: @Talia.Jackson77

Loneliness is a global health crisis. In this episode Dr Talia and Doug have a moving conversation with Anna Bonavita, a former physicist with a passion for culture, cuisine, and the natural environment. While grieving her beloved husband, and in the depths of loneliness and despair, she found comfort and community at a communal table in Italy and has brought this healing opportunity to one of the loneliest cities in the US. Listen to her story. Born in a small Bulgarian village, educated in Russia, and a long-time resident of both Italy and the United States, she claims several countries as the source of her cultural identity. Bonavita is the founder and former president of the Italian Cultural Center as well as the Italian Film Festival of Minneapolis/St. Paul. In 2018 she started Esperienza, an organization which celebrates and preserves culture in small Italian villages and towns through authentic immersion opportunities. She believes that away from the fast speed and superficiality of mass tourism, we can still unhurriedly appreciate the pleasures of the palate and the joy of Italian culture while giving back to local economies. Her latest creation, the Communal Table, was recently featured in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, is a place where social connection is always possible amidst honest food, good company, and local creative talents. What if we did birth and death differently? What if we invited in skilled and compassionate navigators to be by our sides in these unfamiliar lands so the unknown doesn’t paralyze us with fear? What if instead of “I’m sorry for your loss” we said “I hope they lived a kick ass life”? Wendy and Sarah share with us their incredible experience sitting by their mother’s side as she voluntarily chose to stop eating and drinking (VSED) to hasten her dying process after a brutal Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
