Mon, February 10, 2025
What do you think the difference is between those people that are really fulfilled in life and everybody else? It's not their intelligence, it's not their talent. It really all boils down to planning effectively. In this week’s message we look at Nehemiah. He modeled what a life planned and focused looks like. He remained focused on the task in hand, the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, and was not distracted by people trying to trap and kill him. He stayed working on the wall for the city. We are going to ask ourselves, “what is our wall?” - what is the one thing we have to do? Then we will address what might be distracting us from staying on task and letting the urgent consume the important. We will also see the value of planning and pre-deciding in all that we do.

Unbeknownst to many of us, hidden in parts of our hearts, lies the fear of man that the Bible calls a "snare" or a "trap." It paralyzes our faith. Stunts our growth. Sun, August 04, 2024
We all get shaken up in life from time to time, but how do we avoid getting derailed when it happens? We will find the answer by looking back at the early church. In Acts Chapter 4, we see that Peter and John face opposition from the Temple Leaders. They recognize that God is the ultimate judge, they speak of what they have seen and heard, and they get around other Jesus followers. By doing these things, they are able to handle the pressure of the situation and although they were shaken, they were not stirred. If we do the same, and we anchor our faith in Jesus, we too can weather the storms of life and can be a witness for Him.

When we think about these questions there are actually some sobering words for us in Matthew’s Gospel. We’re going to see that in order to be really satisfied in life, we have to go all in, but the way that we do it is counterintuitive at first; it’s different. We’re called to deny ourselves, pick up our cross, and follow Jesus.

When we think of heroes, we often have a vision of someone with superpowers saving the world from destruction. But what if we can all be heroes? It seems unlikely but, with God, it is true. We will look at the example of Moses. We will see that he comes up with a number of excuses as to why he can’t be a hero; why he can’t do what God is asking of him. But God has answers for all of Moses’ excuses and what we find is that while he did not have the position, the power, the skills, or the words to be a hero, none of that was an obstacle for God. We all probably have the same excuses as Moses, and God has the same responses for us. We can all be unlikely heroes and can be used by God to do remarkable things in 2024. All we have to do is be willing to step up and step in.

Sun, July 16, 2023
As we continue our walk through the Book of James by looking at the second half of Chapter one, we will see three highly practical things we can do to communicate with one another and to put our Christian principles into action. If we do these things, moments in our lives have the potential to become movements in the world. We will see that to avoid miscommunication and to love others as Jesus loves us, we need to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. When it comes to living the Christian life, we need to put our faith into action by being doers of the word, and we need to be careful to avoid temptations and deceptions along the way.

We are dropping at the tail end of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Jesus has discussed a number of challenging topics and closes His sermon with a comparison of two houses and how they weather a storm. One that is built on rock survives the storm and one that is built on sand does not. Jesus likens this to how we build our lives. We discover that if we build our life on foundations other that God, we will not fare well in the storms of life, and we can also jeopardize our future legacy. We will discover how we can protect ourselves by making some decisions now that will strengthen our foundations in the present and the future.

After Jesus’ death, His disciples were confused and downtrodden. Their hopes and dreams of a Messiah seem to had been shattered. Two of them were walking along a road when they were joined by a strange man. They didn’t know who he was, but he talked in a way they had not heard before. At the end of the journey, he took, blessed, broke, and gave bread and at that moment they realized they were in the presence of the risen Jesus. In this message, we look at these four acts – taking, blessing, breaking, and giving. We see that they represent stages or seasons in our lives, and it is through these that we too have encounters with the risen Jesus.

We spend over half our waking hours at work, but many of us are frustrated, dissatisfied with our job. We don't enjoy it, we feel it lacks real purpose, and we are stressed. But what if God had something else in mind when it comes to how we approach our job? We are going to explore this and will discover that the purpose of our life at work is to show that God is at work in our life. The way that we achieve this is that in whatever we do, we do it with all of our heart, because we work for the Lord and our work reflects upon Him. When we do this, and become vocationally fit for God, everything comes into context and takes its proper place.
