We are both Marylanders who went to CLI in Guilin at different times but were able to meet in NYC twice. Couple years back, I spoke with Jenna over hot chocolate about adoption and then she kindly came to my cozy room in Queens where we recorded this episode. During 2 months of Chinese language study in Guilin, Jenna also went to the city where she was left/found to look for her biological parents. She shares about the experience and how conversations with others bio-parents helped her empathize with the heartache that bio-parents carry. Sharing quote from Jenna “I hope that maybe if I share some of my conversations with the Chinese adoptee community, it can help them process some of their resentment (if they have any).” If you would like to share your story please email adoptedbabiesfromchina@gmail.com or message @adopteesborninchinapodcast on Facebook and Instagram. Mimi is a senior in journalism at Ohio University and graduates soon. We connect because Mimi’s thesis project is about how China's one-child policy affects adopted Asian American women. This episode, we talk about OU and all I reminisce on the memories. Mimi went on a heritage trip to China, studied abroad in Hong Kong, and even did some birth searching at a young age. I was able to catch Grace during a brief break from Phd studies. It’s the holiday season and we spent some time in nostalgia with books from childhood: Boxcar children, Magic Tree House, and Series of Unfortunate events. We also talk about food and other books related to cuisine and also about Andrea Louie (advisor) book How Chinese are You. It was also wonderful to hear about Grace’s two trips back to China. One with her mom during teen years and another more recent trip to China and Korea with her partner. Grace has spoken with all adoptees with various backgrounds as her PhD is related to adoption and identity. You can connect with Grace @nograceno. Want to share your story? To the first video episode and a birthday release! Watch here - It brings back the feeling of when I first started this show, scrappy and new. As a result of China’s policy regarding intercountry and international adoptions, it has brought a lot of feelings for many. In time with another year of being alive, it felt timely to share some thoughts and reflect. NOTE: This episode contains some language that may not be suitable for some but mostly it is non explicit. Run time is around 1 hour and 25 minutes with a break around 42 minutes. On this double guest (my first one) episode, I talk with fellow Chinese adoptees from VAX dragon boat season 1 and 2. We share our perspectives and learn from one another about friendships, childhood, siblings, nature/nurture and decide this group therapy was solid. Follow @h.langr.outside @notthefruitsnacks @vaxdragonboat on instagram. Quotes: It wasn’t that I actually had sit down discussions that I had about adoption stuff now that I do with a therapist. I would have needed it because I didn't have the tools to figure out what was missing or what my needs were. I didn’t realize that I wasn't ok. It would've been very helpful to have known that at 15. When you don't think about it, things just seem fine. But there's something down beneath the surface affecting everything else and it warped my sense of safety and normalcy. - Hannah As far as overcompensating… I would try to be more asian but it was never enough. The incessant comments about IT not being enough. I wore a qipao because I really truly thought it was beautiful and I am Chinese American. It’s part of my culture that I want to show off. I’ve always tried to try….Not necessarily because I want to prove something but just because I want to be in touch with that part of me. This is a solo episode. Sometimes there are things that make you cry at the most unexpected times because life does that. In the therapy session before this recording, I cried a lot when talking about birthdays and how for me personally it feels like a tough reminder versus a moment of celebration. I have been working on a few things within therapy including family and current individual reflection and have to say, heartbreak takes time to heal. Some also hit much stronger than others and it takes time but I can say it’s good I’m giving myself space and trying to stay true. Then to take a turn, I participated in a body painting event in the city. The day after doing this recording, I found myself walking in the pouring rain in the wrong direction from my destination. There was a time deadline and I was by myself. I had a full on tantrum on the empty pathway at dawn. The journey ended with me being able to meet the deadline and the sun shining 3.5 hours later. On this episode of ABC, witness how social connection in real life relationships can be built. Amanda and I connected on instagram through the podcast account and then we met two days later at an Also Known As Inc. event. I was able to speak with Amanda in person and also here about her short film, Yuan Fen. This is a project Amanda worked on in her senior year of undergraduate with a team of 40 people or so including 3 advisors, composer, and others. It was really cool to hear about the inception of this short and how it came to fruition. Spoiler alert on her short film and also about Lilo & Stitch. Amanda shares more about her own experiences with her adoption growing up and how the red thread connection holds a key place in her perceptions. It’s a Valentine’s episode with @hopeeatsnyc. Hope is a chef, musician, and Chinese adoptee I met via Also Known As. There is some talk about relationships but mostly the conversation is about food and how we have related to Chinese culture being adoptees. Hope and her sister were engaged with their adoption for as long as they can remember and now getting closer to 30, she started to connect more to identity and adoption in her own way. Follow @hopeeatsnyc for NYC eats and her cooking. Too Good To Go is an app helping to save food from being thrown out. You can check out a more in depth conversation about Hope's experience with food and cooking on on @captaincooksfood Show Spicy Memories @spotify! 🥟. Happy Birthday to your sister Hope! It’s the 50th episode! Happy Lunar New Year 2022 to those who celebrate. This episode is a solo short one without the usual intro because I am playing back the trailer and inserting some reflective thoughts. Lives we impacted– So far only have spoken to friends close to me and learned about their view of friendship with me or their own stories and challenges growing up. We are all human and despite the adoption focus here, I don’t think I would’ve heard these stories from others. Adopted from Ningbo– Correct pronunciation in this one? Since starting this show, I did pick up learning and practicing with others in mandarin. My neighbor and her friend speak the dialect from Ningbo which is pretty surreal! Haven’t spoken to other adoptees too much– but now I have. From other parts of North America and being introduced to others in Europe and even Australia through this experience. Katie shared about her passion for writing and speaking about adoption and it still remains to this day. The emotion/ complexities behind it even when things have happened in our life. @Somewherebetween.fam on IG - Lunar New Year Episode, Chinese adoptees If you would like to share your story please email adoptedbabiesfromchina@gmail.com or @adoptedbabiesfromchinapod on Facebook, Instagram, and @ChineseAdoptPod on Twitter. As we all go through the various moments and stages of identifying with our adoption, community and reflection are always helpful. Mary decided to focus her video documentary thesis on Chinese adoptees while also connecting with the community. This conversation gives more insight into our parents who are our blood and to the parents who raise us. We are also not obligated to others for the decisions and choices related to our own adoption experiences. Follow Mary @maryy.ri. XiuXiu lives in the Netherlands. This conversation goes into family dynamics, names, and search process. I enjoyed speaking and hearing more about her story. Family is challenging and sometimes as adoptees we can make some choices in regard to how dynamics will play out and how we choose to command our identity. Warning: This set of recordings start off very strong on the emotions side. I found there was less and less need to do the memos related to the search DNA process. This is the third and last part of the recordings from when getting a DNA test done. It was a process and I learned the value of not letting the events take over my emotions. Calm responses resulted in better overall experience. I am @landofrunningtara on instagram. Thank you for listening! Hello everyone! Thank you for listening to my voice. This is part 2 of recording about the search. Ultimately these go deeper where I talk about family, feelings about myself, and even speak mandarin. I thought releasing 2 of 3 today was a nice time with tomorrow being the day I celebrate my birthday. I realized I had been saying the date incorrectly in mandarin and also how wild it is to hear myself try too. It is 号 not 日 (hao vs. ri). Taylor is someone I met in person at an adoptee event. She grew up in NYC and decided to move away for a bit of time when going to college. This conversation shows how small and connected communities really can be. Especially toward the end of the conversation, do we focus in on the essence of living life. Note: Explicit language and content and laughter for a good portion The comedy duo-- From Adilooloo and Tarafoofoo, this week's episode is another personal one for me! There are people who come and go and others who stick around (and this one is a long episode 90 min!). Adi and I met and became roommates for three years in Maryland. He is now in Indiana pursuing a Phd and I thought it would be great to record and share some of the wisdom from conversations we have had/ currently having. Amongst the jokes and goofiness, there is a wonderful perspective and true honesty shared. I realized speaking with Adi here too that we are truly a result of the experiences which form our perspectives and differences in opinions. Also, a nice special appearance from my current roommate. WARNING: May contain spoilers if you haven’t seen Inside out, Soul, and Coco. Here is a bonus episode because I couldn’t resist an opportunity to share this part of the conversation with Haley about Pixar. I realize 3.5 hours is not actually too long to be in theater or watching a feature film these days but for children, I would argue so!
