On this week's #RefsPodcast: Referee Ghislain Hebert and linesman Derek Nansen hanging up the skates… but not before getting in some late hits, with Nansen laying out Buffalo Sabres’ Peyton Krebs Minnesota Wild goaltender Jonas Gustavsson stops the puck on his back and - after review - keeps it from going over the line. Florida Panthers’ AJ Greer scores off his skate against the Montreal Canadiens but the goal is immediately waved off… then, after a brief discussion, allowed… then, after video review, called back for a distinct kicking motion. In the PWHL, Montreal’s Kati Tabin picks up a game misconduct for an illegal check to the head, but avoids a suspension Referee Frederick L’Ecuyer - who previously brought you “all the other guys gonna have a misconduct” - starts calling out players by name on the penalty announcement Carolina Hurricanes’ Jalen Chatfield drops the gloves then goes MMA-style with a judo takedown on Washington Capitals’ Connor McMichael - with no fine or suspension on the play. Los Angeles Kings forward Adrian Kempe is awarded a goal after getting tripped up and crashing into the Utah goaltender Over in the Swiss League, former NHLer Brendan Lemieux is suspended for accidentally punching linesman Dominik Altmann… and, no, you can’t do that. On this week's #RefsPodcast: St. Louis Blues’ Zach Bolduc gets fined for a cross-check on Nashville Predators’ Nick Blankenburg, but avoids a penalty for a hit on Colorado Avalanche defenseman Ryan Lindgren. Boston Bruins’ Michael Callahan misses his assignment, gets beat on a goal, and cross-checks Anaheim Ducks’ Jansen Harkins in the neck, earning a penalty and a fine. Florida Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola fires a buzzer-beater from the defensive end, barely missing Montreal Canadiens’ David Savard and getting 2 + 10 for unsportsmanlike conduct. St. Louis also makes like the Harlem Globetrotters, with three consecutive mid0air plays on the puck before scoring – legally. Buzzkill in LA as the refs keep us from a goalie fight between Jeremy Swayman and Darcy Kuemper. The New York Islanders are once again frustrated with goaltender interference reviews as Kyle Palmieri enters the blue paint and sees his goal disallowed. More disallowed goals at Calgary Flames vs. Dallas Stars, after the Flames’ have a Connor Zary goal wiped out for a kicking motion and a Joel Farabee marker wiped out for interference. On this week's #RefsPodcast: Stripes getting set for the Stadium Series... will we get a Michigan or Ohio official in the house? Referee Justin Kea stays in the game after getting his 'bells rung' after a clearing attempt catches him in the undercarriage. Minnesota Wild winger Ryan Hartman has his suspension reduced by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, serving two fewer games and retaining nearly $100k in salary as a result of his appeal. Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras gets three games for headhunting despite no penalty call in the game. It’s a tale of two goal sticks on dueling goaltender interference calls. We get a Seattle Kraken goal restored after a challenge that Blues defenseman Colton Parayko bumped Jordan Binnington’s stick, along with another lost stick after Florida Panthers’ Jonah Gadjovich swats away the stick of Nashville Predators goaltender Jusse Saros for no goal. We also take a look at a high stick from Los Angeles Kings forward Warren Foegele. Fans were up in arms asking why the Vancouver Canucks challenged for goaltender interference instead of challenging the high stick. On this episode of the Scouting the Refs podcast, Todd and Josh discuss various topics related to hockey officiating, including the ever-increasing effectiveness of Coach's Challenges, some penalty calls from the recent Beanpot tournament, and the differences between NCAA and NHL rules. They also delve into the dynamics of fighting in the Four Nations tournament - which is not exactly an international event as it's played under NHL rules - and provide an update on Ryan Hartman's suspension and appeal. The conversation highlights the evolving nature of officiating in hockey and the importance of understanding the rules across different leagues. ------------------ Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, BlueSky, and Threads. Breaking down the ten-game suspension for Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman, and what comes next with his appeal to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and potentially an independent arbitrator. Hartman’s ban is the longest since Washington Capitals’ Tom Wilson was suspended for 20 games - reduced to 14 upon appeal - back in 2018-19. We dig into the appeal process – how Wilson’s was reduced and what might happen for Hartman. Double-review at Sens vs. Preds as an Ottawa Senators goal is first reviewed by the Situation Room for a continuous play and then challenged for goaltender interference by the Nashville Predators. A rare ‘offensive’ coach’s challenge from the Winnipeg Jets overturns a goal disallowed due to goaltender interference, actually putting the goal back up on the board. More reviews at Leafs vs. Flames, as the Toronto Maple Leafs lose their first goal of the game on a high stick from John Tavares, and the Calgary Flames lose theirs to goaltender interference from the stick of Jonathan Huberdeau on goaltender Joseph Woll. Colorado Avalanche’s Miles Wood had a rough night with a pair of penalties, including a minor for slashing that should have been a speaking major. No major penalty called on the play, and nothing from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety on that one, despite Rule 62. Boston Bruins’ Morgan Geekie sends an opposing player’s stick into orbit, picking up an interference minor on the play under Rule 56.2. It's a call every time, even when opposing players pull a .38 Special and 'Hold On Loosely'... Plus, the NHL’s upcoming Four Nations tournament only has two nations represented in stripes… Missed opportunity? ------------------ Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, BlueSky, and Threads. Minnesota Wild’s Ryan Hartman gets a match penalty for intent to injure after he slams the head of Ottawa Senators’ Tim Stutzle into the ice on a faceoff; Hartman will have an in-person hearing - allowing the league to suspend him for five games or more - with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety. . More head contact at Devils vs. Sabres, as New Jersey’s Stefan Noesen catches Buffalo’s Tage Thompson up high, earning a match penalty but no supplemental discipline. Should the NHL institute a multiplier for suspensions and fines to really up the stakes for repeat offenders? New Jersey Devils’ Brendan Dillon got away with interference against Philadelphia Flyers’ Owen Tippett, Vegas Golden Knights’ Mark Stone picks up two for tripping after he crashed into Dallas Stars’ Miro Heiskanen - thanks to some stickwork from Roope Hintz. Edmonton Oilers’ John Klingberg is juuuuuuust a bit offside, but a bit is all it took to wipe out Leon Draisaitl’s goal and foil the Oilers’ comeback against the Toronto Maple Leafs. St. Louis Blues’ Oskar Sundqvist dives, Tampa Bay Lightning’s Emil Lilleberg gest suspended, and Chicago Blackhawks’ Ryan Donato gets a little help from a ref… ------------------ Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, BlueSky, and Threads. Episode 231 / January 25, 2025: It's a jam-packed week with tons of National Hockey League action. You've still got timt to sign up and join them - more info at NAHL.com or check out our post at scoutingtherefs.com. A pair of cross-checks to the head result in a pair of three-game suspensions at Oilers vs. Canucks, with Connor McDavid and Tyler Myers both sitting out. We break down the penalties and revisit McDavid’s comments on consistency in officiating. The Predators’ Cole Smith ejected for a hit to the head of the Stars’ Ty Dellandrea that was upheld after ref review. Stick shenanigans as the Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews gets whistled for playing with a goal stick, while Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins picks up a minor for playing with Matthews’ stick. A few days prior, Rangers goaltender Jonathan Quick got away with one when he attempted to play with Canadiens’ Juraj Slafkovsky’s stick upside down. Rule 63 is in play as nachos cleared the glass and entered the attacking zone without a whistle, leading to an Oilers goal against the Capitals. We’ve also got some choking in Boston thanks to Brad Marchand, that somehow avoided a penalty and even a fine. In National Hockey League zebra action, we’ve got linesman Jonny Murray injured at Jets vs. Avalanche and referee Kyle Rehman with the fighting penalty call of the year from Preds vs. Sharks. Episode 228 / January 4, 2025: So much for New Year’s Resolutions! The NHL Department of Player Safety has been busy handing out fines to Philadelphia Flyers’ Matvei Michkov (high-sticking), Chicago Blackhawks’ Patrick Maroon (elbowing), and Florida Panthers’ Sam Bennett (roughing), along with a three-game suspension to Nashville Predators’ Zachary L’Heureux for slew-footing. Finally, the refs and Player Safety called a slew-foot a slew-foot! New York Rangers’ winger Matt Rempe is still suspended, having served six of his eight-game suspension for boarding Dallas Stars’ Miro Heiskanen. We’ve got a bunch of player ejections this week. Boston Bruins’ Oliver Wahlstrom is tossed for boarding Washington Capitals Martin Fehervary, Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov gets five and a game for a knee-on-knee hit on Florida Panthers’ Matthew Tkachuk. Timo Meier of the New Jersey Devils also gets the boot for kneeing Carolina Hurricanes’ Martin Necas. We’ve even got some knee-on-knee action from Team Canada’s Cole Beaudoin at the World Juniors. Vancouver Canucks’ Pius Suter avoids a match penalty - and any supplemental discipline - for an attempted kick against Calgary Flames defenseman Joel Hanley. Episode 227 / December 20, 2024: With the final #RefsPodcast before Christmas, we look at who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, along with the airing of grievances in the spirit of Festivus! Linesman Travis Toomey injured, Detroit Red Wings’ Jonatan Berggren fined for cross-checking, San Jose Sharks’ coach Ryan Warsofsky fined $25,000 for comments towards the officials, and Edmonton’s Darnell Nurse picks up two for tripping and another two for mouthing off to referee Kelly Sutherland. We’ve got an offensive goaltender interference challenge that put a goal back on the board for the Vegas Golden Knights' Ivan Barbashev after Mark Stone skimmed the top of the crease and, from the same game, no call for a Jack Eichel cross-check that sent the Oilers’ Mattias Ekholm crashing into the boards. Also, a bit of a cluster-puck in Philly as the ref’s arm goes up… then down… but not quickly enough to avoid the Flyers pulling their goalie and sending out another skater… only to draw a whistle for too many men on the ice. We - like the refs did - will sort this one out. We also take a look at The Athletic’s Rules Court, which happens to coincidentally touch on something from Rob Vollman’s Hockey Abstract book on advanced NHL stats from a few years back. Episode 226 / December 13, 2024: Reminiscing about the good ol' days when the National Hockey League would lock an old man in a plexiglass phone booth for a few hours with only a button to press... and where technology has gotten us in the NHL. Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson couldn't keep the puck from going over the line, but somehow the broadcast was kept from getting a conclusive video feed of the play. Over in the PWHL, Maggie Flaherty was suspended two games for an illegal check to the head of Alina Muller, while Susan Tapani picked up a minor penalty for dangerously hitting New York's Sara Fillier into the bench. Episode 224 / November 30, 2024: It’s a crazy NHL schedule this week thanks to the Thanksgiving Holiday! On this week’s #RefsPodcast, the challenges of making - and staying in - the NHL as an official, Panthers’ Tkachuk called for interference without making contact, Timo Meier suspended for making plenty of contact with a cross-check to the face, questionable contact (if any) that led to an overtime goal by the Montreal Canadiens Nick Suzuki, and some contact below the belt from the Habs’ Brendan Gallagher on Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski. Also, in the spirit of giving, should NHL Player Safety give a harsher sentence to suspendable offenses after the whistle? Episode 223 / November 23, 2024: The NHL's Department of Player Safety finally did it... again. DOPS released a video explaining the rule around illegal checks to the head, including why a few players didn't get suspended. Of course, not all the players were so lucky. Toronto Maple Leafs winger Ryan Reaves picked up a five-game ban for an illegal check to the head of Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse, while Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Zach Whitecloud avoided a penalty - along with no fine and no suspenson - for a hard hit on Toronto's Matthew Knies. Player Safety also hit Winnipeg Jets defenseman Neal Pionk with a $5000 fine - the league maximum - for clipping. We also had a hand pass that cost the New York Rangers a goal and TWO penalties against the Calgary Flames - one for the failed challenge and another for unsportsmanlike conduct after Vincent Trocheck offered some feedback to the officials on a called hand pass later in the game Rule changes are in the air, as the PWHL makes some tweaks to their rulebook for thre upcoming season including the No Escape Rule. The Athletic also asked National Hockey League players for their thoughts around possible rule changes; some were good, others...not so much. Also, a scary injury sends referee Mitch Dunning off the ice on a stretcher. We'll break it all down on this week's Refs Podcast. ------------------ Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, BlueSky, and Threads. Episode 222 / November 16, 2024: Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn has his major penalty for boarding Boston Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo reduced to a two-minute minor after review, Utah’s Michael Carcone picked up seven minutes in penalty after a one-sided scrap against Jack Drury of the Carolina Hurricanes. It’s a three-review game at Leafs vs. Caps, with a disallowed goal from Toronto’s Steven Lorentz that wasn’t a kick, another Leafs no-goal after a goal deflected with an allegedly high stick by Matthew Knies, and a goaltender interference call against the Washington Capitals. Perhaps some puck tracking and a little math would've helped out here. Anybody got a graphing calculator handy? Vancouver’s Nils Hoglander also has a goal wiped out for batting the puck into the net with his glove... but is that what they replays actually show? Take a look. Todd and Josh break down the plays, the reviews, and the rules. Also, we’ve got a dive! Matthew Tkachuk of the Florida Panthers doesn’t get a score but he does get two minutes – and very likely a warning from NHL Hockey Ops for embellishment. Plus, what will come out of the National Hockey League GM Meetings? Are more changes coming to the NHL’s Video Review process or to Coach’s Challenges? We’ve got some thoughts on what to do - and what not to do - to improve the review process. ------------------ Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, BlueSky, and Threads. Episode 221 / November 9, 2024: We’re seeing double this week with two reviews - and two pucks on the ice. Plus, Todd and Josh are joined by Tyler Nimmons, director and executive producer of ECHL Unfiltered. The Avalanche had a goal taken away for offside, only to have it reinstated a moment later after a protest from the Avs’ bench delayed the faceoff long enough for the Situation Room to go back and check out a key detail that they missed under Rule 83.1. Islanders head coach Patrick Roy had his own complaints about coach’s challenges after his club lost a challenge for offside against the Penguins when the Situation Room ruled that Pittsburgh’s Noel Acciari was off the ice for a line change prior to the puck being touched in the attacking zone. The Lightning and Wild had two teams on the ice, two refs on the ice, two linesmen on the ice - and two pucks. How did this happen, and has it happened before? Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck disputed a non-call - and failed challenge - for goaltender interference against the Tampa Bay after Conor Geekie’s stick ended up under Hellebuyck’s pad. The NHL called the contact legal based on Rule 69.7, but did they get it right? NHL Player Safety has had a busy week, with a two-game suspension to the Avalanche’s Matt Stienburg and $5000 fines to Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin and Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway. Nothing for the Penguins’ Noel Acciari for his dangerous reverse hit on Juraj Slafkovsky of the Canadiens, though. Also this week, linesman Kilian McNamara becomes collateral damage on a hit at Kings/Preds, and we review the upcoming suspension for Tyler Jeannot for his clearly illegal headshot on Canucks forward Brock Boeser. Finally, we’ll chat with Tyler Nimmons about ECHL Unfiltered, airing on the NHL Network and FloHockey.tv. The series goes behind the scenes with the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads, including a look at the raw reality of players, coaches, and communities that make up this dynamic league – as well as a behind-the-scenes look at their interactions with fans and officials… All on this week’s #RefsPodcast! ------------------- Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, and Threads. Let the coaches’ challenges begin! One week into the season, we’ve already seen challenges for goaltender interference, offside, and missed stoppages. We’ve got two minutes to Detroit Red Wings’ Christian Fisher for breaking his stick after an icing. Brendan Dillon of the New Jersey Devils sees his major penalty for interference on Buffalo’s J.J. Peterka reduced to a minor, a Kraken goal from Jamie Oleksiak wiped out for an offside, Vancouver Canucks’ J.T. Miller answers the bell and eventually drops the gloves against Calgary’s Anthony Mantha after a clean hit injures Flames forward Kevin Rooney. Linesman Devin Berg takes a hard slash to the arm from Boston Bruins’ Max Jones, who picks up two for unsportsmanlike but avoids a penalty for physical abuse of officials. Game on! The regular season is officially here. We've got goaltender interference in Columbus, possible penalty reviews, and ECHL rulebook adjustments. Toronto Maple Leafs' Cedric Pare's knee-on-knee hit on Montreal Canadiens' Patrik Laine, and the aftermath with Arber Xhekaj going after Pare and picking up instigator, aggressor, and fighting penalties along with a $3,385 fine. Xhekaj also made headlines - and picked up a major penalty - for a high hit on Tim Stutzle of the Ottawa Senators; did the refs and the league make the right call on that play? Plus, one more case of revenge on this week's #RefsPodcast, as both Nikita Kucherov and Conor Geekie sought vengeance against Florida Panthers prospect Josh Davies for a clean, legal hit on Tampa Bay Lightning captain Victor Hedman. Kucherov earned a minor penalty, while Geekie picked up 2-5-10 and a one game suspension for leaving the bench to start an altercation. ------------------- Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, and Threads. Getting ready for the upcoming 2024-25 National Hockey League season with a review of the rule changes, including a big one that will allow Coach's Challenges for puck-over-glass delay of game penalties, along with Ryan Getzlaf joining former teammate George Parros in the NHL's Department of Player Safety. Todd and Josh look back at the retiring officials, the promotions, and the two new hires joining the NHL officiating ranks: Alex Lepkowski and Liam Maaskant. The latest stripes both spent time playing in the OHL and USports, suiting up with the Acadia Axemen for four seasons before moving to officiating. Who better to weigh in on the NHL's latest officials than the man who coached them? Acadia University men's hockey coach Darren Burns joins us to learn about the league's latest additions, including what they were like on and off the ice. ------------------- Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, and Threads. Recently retired NHL referee Kevin Pollock picks up a new gig as the Ontario Hockey Association’s Director of Officiating, summer camps are underway including the NHL’s second trip to Europe for a Summer Officiating Combine and the upcoming NHL Officiating Exposure Combine in Buffalo. NHL stripes are keeping busy with their own camps and charitable ventures, like linesman Steve Barton’s charity golf tournament. The AHL hands out some more hardware with Shaun Davis picking up the Michael Condon Award while the ECHL hands out some more assignments as the league moves to have 50% of games officiated by a two-referee system for 2024-25. Rule changes in Canada as Hockey Canada mandates full face protection for Under-18 players and western Canadian leagues adopt the WHL rulebook. After 259 days and 1,400 games, the 2023-24 NHL season is finally over! We look back at Games 6 and 7 of the Stanley Cup Final: Game 6: The Edmonton Oilers win a critical offside challenge against the Florida Panthers. That one took guts... but should we even be reviewing plays that close? What about 'the spirit of the rule'? Where's the line? Also, Florida's Sam Bennett gets dumped right before an Oilers goal, with no call on the play. Should there have been one? Game 7: With only three penalties in the game, each one was huge -- including two minutes to the Panthers' Matthew Tkachuk for tripping as he slid into - and took out - the Oilers' Warren Foegele. Should the refs be calling this at all? Especially in a Game 7? Why does that matter? The NHL's new rules are coming for 2024-25, including puck over glass challenges and penalties for sitting on the boards. We'll break down the changes and their possible impacts to the game. The ECHL makes some promotions and expands their officiating management team, with longtime NHL linesman Tim Nowak and former AHL/ECHL/IIHF referee Tim Mayer joining Riley Yerkovich. Also, USA Hockey taps ref Andrew Bruggeman as their Coordinator of Youth Officiating Development. Wes McCauley give us a history lesson on hand signals - via the Big Whistle Bill Chadwick - as part of the NHL's American Sign Language Stanley Cup Final broadcast. Another year of Hockey Hall of Fame Inductions without an official heading in. On this week's #RefsPodcast, we roll through Games 4 and 5 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers! Game 4: Edmonton's Darnell Nurse has a kneeing major penalty downgraded to a two-minute minor... but was there embellishment on the play? And can we make a rule change that'll help the refs when there is? No penalty on a hit by the Panthers' Kyle Okposo on Leon Draisaitl - nor should there be. No penalty on an Anton Lundell hit on Edmonton's Cody Ceci - nor should there be. Florida's Aaron Ekblad delivered a hit from behind into the boards on the Oilers' Warren Foegele with no penalty called.... okay, on this one, there should've been a call. Game 5: Florida's Sam Bennett gets away with charging on Dylan Holloway... and Bennett also gets away with clear goaltender interference on the Oilers' Stuart Skinner, who was clearly in the blue paint at the time of the collision -- not that it matters in this case. We'll explain why. Holloway and Matthew - not Keith - Tkachuk both go off on a hook and a dive, respectively. It looked like the right call at the time, but video evidence might give Tkachuk the benefit of the doubt here on a possible trip on the play. Watch the wobble. The Panthers' run 14-0-1 run - 5-0 in the playoffs - under referee Dan O'Rourke comes to an end. ------------------- Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, and Threads. Is this the final day for the Stanley Cup Final? Can the Edmonton Oilers stay alive? With the Florida Panthers holding a commanding 3-0 lead in the series, we look back at what's happened thus far in the Cup Final. Game 1: Oilers' Henrique boards Panthers' Ekman-Larsson, Sam Bennett runs over Connor McDavid, and Sergei Bobrovsky gets a whistle with the puck under his pad. Game 2: Edmonton's Warren Foegele picks up a major and a game for kneeing Florida's Eetu Luostarinen, Leon Draisaitl takes out Sasha Barkov with a leaping elbow, Carrick fined for a slash to the ol' twig-and-berries, and a controversial puck-over-glass non-call that saw fans debating the definition of 'contact' Game 3: Referee Steve Kozari encourages Corey Perry to have a seat; Perry shares his thoughts. Heading into the Stanley Cup Final this week on the #RefsPodcast, with a look at the officials selected to work the championship series between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers. Expect things to tighten up as penalty minutes are down and power plays are at a premium late in the playoffs. Did the officials miss a penalty on Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid for closing his hand on the puck in Game 6 against the Dallas Stars? A slew of rule changes are coming to college hockey, with the NCAA making tweaks to head contact and hits from behind. They're also changing high-sticks on played pucks and goals to shoulder height; we'll see how that impacts deflections around the crease. They've also decided to stop giving power plays to teams who score on a delayed penalty, now aligning with the NHL rulebook. We've got hardware handed out, with officiating awards in the ECHL, OHL, and WHL -- congrats to Chuck Schamel, Dustin McCrank, and Jeff Ingram -- so why hasn't the NHL jumped on board to recognize their officials? Also, The Hockey Guy -- or, perhaps, The Referee Guy -- gives his take on an NHL official's AMA. ------------------- Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, and Threads. This week on the #RefsPodcast, we discuss a pair of major penalties that were downgraded after officials' review. The Panthers’ Dmitry Kulikov had a major penalty reduced to a minor for hit on Rangers’ Alex Wennberg and the Rangers’ Jacob Trouba saw his elbowing major on Florida’s Evan Rodrigues dropped to a minor… neither with any explanation as to why the refs felt neither play deserved a major penalty. Remember, those penalty reviews are handled by the refs – not the Situation Room. Player Safety appeared to disagree on the Trouba call, handing out a $5000 fine for the elbow. When teams take two penalties on the same play - as Trouba did - should teams be given the option to choose between a four-minute 5-on-4 or a two-minute 5-on-3? What about giving teams the option to pick between a power play and a penalty shot? Down goes Marchment! The refs thought Mason Marchment embellished a cross-check from the Edmonton Oilers’ Zach Hyman. Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger’s stick made a perfectly legal save on its own, but that’s not always the case. . Should the Panthers have been awarded a penalty shot after New York’s Blake Wheeler hooked Alexander Barkov? Do they even CALL penalty shots in overtime? Florida’s Sam Reinhart gets away with punching New York’s Jacob Trouba at the whistle; no call on the play with Reinhart scoring the overtime winner… should he have been in the box? Also, the Rangers’ Chris Kreider narrowly avoided a misconduct penalty for throwing Matthew Tkachuk’s mouthguard out of play… not that the officials were going to call that one. ------------------- Visit scoutingtherefs.com and follow @scoutingtherefs and @toddlewissports on Twitter/X, Instagram, and Threads. This week on the #RefsPodcast, we ask: Where's Wes McCauley? Edmonton Oilers' Connor McDavid takes an overtime high-sticking penalty that was confirmed via review... but was another penalty missed? Boston Bruins forward Charlie Coyle gives a little 'How do you do' to Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad's undercarriage, with no penalty or fine. Goaltender interference (surprise!) at Vancouver Canucks vs. Edmonton Oilers... and again at Dallas Stars vs. Colorado Avalanche... and once more at New York Rangers vs. Florida Panthers. Breaking down those plays, the rules, and the maddening 'explanations' we get from the officials and the NHL's Situation Room. No goal! We’ve got no goal after Vancouver Canucks goaltender Arturs Silovs saves a puck with his glove that might have been over the line… but a good goal for the Florida Panthers’ Sam Bennett after he cross-checked Charlie Coyle into Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman. We also have some goaltender interference on the Panthers’ Sergei Bobrovsky. No call! Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid gets away with one after he bloodied Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes with an uncalled high stick. How was it missed, and what can the officials do about it afterwards? No control! Chaos ensues after the buzzer at Edmonton Oilers vs. Vancouver Canucks, when a Connor McDavid slash prompts a pair of cross-checks that resulted in a fine to Nikita Zadorov and a suspension for Carson Soucy. Did Player Safety get it right? We’re not quite sure… No video! Florida’s Sam Bennett delivered a sucker-punch that knocked Boston’s Brad Marchand out of the lineup, but no penalty was called… no suspension or fine were offered… and no clear video of the incident was available - until just before the next game. How does that happen? No way! Vancouver’s Elias Petterson picks up a charging penalty for a jumping reverse hit. You don’t see that every day, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a penalty. (Heck, most reverse hits are already interference.) Also, sad news out of Hamilton with the passing of long-time NHL and WHA referee Bill Friday at age 91. On this week’s #RefsPodcast, we’ve got big hits, mega misconducts, and… who’s that ref? Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn goes unpenalized for a hit on Colorado Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews - even after a ref review, Carolina Hurricanes’ Tony DeAngelo gets two for a hit on Will Cuylle of the New York Rangers, more goaltender collisions at Canes/Rangers, and some poor goaltender geometry for the Edmonton Oilers’ Stuart Skinner against the Vancouver Canucks. We’ve got a no-call for low-sticking, and a whole bunch of misconduct penalties at Boston Bruins vs. Florida Panthers. Plus, standby referee Frederick L’Ecuyer subs in at Avs vs. Stars… so where’s Wes McCauley? It's all about the blue paint as Nashville Predators’ Michael McCarron gets fined for goaltender interference after running over Casey DeSmith of the Vancouver Canucks, and two Tampa Bay Lightning goals get wiped out due to goaltender interference. Los Angeles Kings goaltender David Rittich is in the blue when he catches the puck… but his glove goes over the line. Boston Bruins’ Brad Marchand gets taken out by linesman Andrew Smith… then shoves linesman Ryan Daisy while heading off on a line change. Rangers’ Rempe takes out Caps’ Van Riemsdyk and a pair of penalties get overturned after referee review at Vegas Golden Knights vs. Dallas Stars – Todd and Josh break down why the refs couldn’t assess a double-minor of Alex Pietrangelo for roughing after he drew blood from Tyler Seguin. We’ve got a Nashville Predators goal off the skate of Filip Forsberg that was ruled not to be a ‘distinct kicking motion’, and the Colorado Avalanche ending up shorthanded after some inconclusive video evidence on an offside challenge against the Winnipeg Jets. Should the NHL remove the penalty when a review is inconclusive? Plus, the role of NHL Series Supervisors and how they factor into each playoff series. PLUS: Did you know that the official color blue for an NHL goal crease is PANTONE 298? On this week's Scouting the Refs podcast, we've got an Emergency Back-Up Ref getting into the action as Michael Markovic steps in for Trevor Hanson at Nashville Predators vs. Vancouver Canucks, Trevor Moore of the Los Angeles Kings gets only two minutes for a low hit on the Edmonton Oilers' Vincent Desharnais, and the New York Rangers' Artemi Panarin sees a major penalty call rescinded after his hit on Washington Capitals' forward T.J. Oshie. Also on the latest #RefsPodcast, we've got two too-many-men penalties -- one at Rangers vs. Caps for six men, and one at Panthers vs. Lightning where Tampa was caught with seven skaters on the ice. We also review the review of the Winnipeg Jets' red-line goal against the Colorado Avalanche that required a second look, a penalized slash by Tyler Bertuzzi on Boston Bruins' Brad Marchand that should get a second look for embellishment, and the rules around stopping play when a goaltender has lost his mask, as New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin did against the Carolina Hurricanes. We hereby conduct this week's Scouting the Refs Podcast... The playoff officials working the next fortnight's games are out! Referee Mike Sullivan is... ready for it as he makes his NHL debut; Kevin Shattenkirk is guilty as sin for stickwork from the bench; refs would've, should've, could've called a penalty for Habs' Slafkovsky's stick flip, Flyers fans need to calm down when referee Kelly Sutherland thought 'don't blame me' after he waved off a goal when he lost sight of the puck, the Islanders' Kyle Palmieri is like 'look what you made me do' after a Rangers player pushes him offside, the Pittsburgh Penguins are wondering how did it end after two disallowed goals for interference, the Red Wings' Joe Veleno is fresh out the slammer after only two minutes for a dangerous boarding, Washington's Nick Jensen goes down bad after a hit from Tampa's Mikey Eyssimont, and Ottawa's Shane Pinto hits different - with no call - on the Rangers' Matt Rempe -- who, at 6'7", is definitely not the smallest man who ever lived. Tampa Nikita Kucherov is like 'who's afraid of little old me' after he did something bad with an elbow to the Caps' Tom Wilson, and I think he knows it. Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby calls out a linesman, referee Steve Kozari is injured in a collision with Tampa Bay Lightning’s Haydn Fleury, two new NHL referees make their league debuts as Graedy Hamilton and Stephen Hiff take the ice, with two more waiting for their starts. We’ve got a goal line stand at Boston Bruins vs. Carolina Hurricanes, where a shot from the Canes’ Martin Necas just baaaaaarely crossed the goal line… or did it? And why can’t we be sure?! The rulebook fails the refs as they review a high stick on Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby, Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Erik Johnson leaves the penalty box – with the officials’ headset, and Edmonton Oilers’ winger Evander Kane is fined $5000 for slashing Calgary’s Dryden Hunt after a goal. We've got a communication breakdown in Montreal as a Canadiens goal against the Florida Panthers is confirmed - then overturned due to a miscommunication between the Situation Room and the on-ice officials. (At least they got the call right!) Player Safety had a busy week, with Minnesota Wild's Hartman suspended for throwing a stick at a referee, Montreal Canadiens' Guhle suspended for slashing from the bench, Anaheim Ducks' Strome fined for cross-checking, and Philadelphia Flyers' Hathaway fined for diving/embellishment. While both players were ejected from their respective games, no supplemental discipline for a spear from Vegas Golden Knights' Eichel or boarding by Canucks' Zadorov. You get a misconduct! You get a misconduct! Misconduct penalties to every skater on the ice at Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Buffalo Sabres. We also saw eight players ejected just two seconds into New Jersey Devils vs. New York Rangers, thanks to Rule 46.7. Linesman Ryan Galloway works his final NHL game, while referee Chris Lee lays out Anaheim's Trevor Zegras with a solid check along the boards. Also, over in the OHL, they're giving referees the final call on video reviews for the playoffs. Detroit Red Wings broadcaster Ken Daniels joins Todd and Josh to discuss a revolutionary change to the offside rule that would increase scoring, reduce Coach's Challenges, and expand the size of the offensive zone. The NHL's Department of Player Safety issues a six-game suspension to Washington Capitals' Tom Wilson for an egregious high stick - which he reportedly won't appeal - and a $5000 fine to Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram for some egregious interference on Ottawa Senators winger (and 17th-century pirate) Angus Crookshank. We've got captain-on-captain violence as New York Islanders' Anders Lee gets ejected for a knee-on-knee hit that injured the New Jersey Devils' Nico Hischier. Vegas Golden Knights' Nic Hague sees a match penalty reduced to a minor after review, but Winnipeg Jets' Mark Schiefele still gets the instigator for avenging the hit. The Situation Room rules no goaltender interference between Casey Cizikas and Anthony Stolarz at Islanders vs. Panthers, and no hand pass from Vincent Trocheck at Rangers vs. Avalanche. We break down the rules and the calls. Over in the ECHL, we've got an egregious temper tantrum that ended up in an ejection, but somehow didn't result in a suspension for abuse of officials. Move, ref! Get out the way! Get out the way! Unintentional zebra hunting this week, as linesmen Tommy Hughes, Steve Barton, and Dan Kelly all find themselves on the receiving end of some unintentional contact; referee Chris Schlenker gets a primary assist; Mark Shewchyk steps up as the EBUL (Emergency Backup Linesman); and an unfortunate collision may be career-ending for referee Kevin Pollock. The NHL's Department of Player Safety hand out a two-game suspension to Florida Panthers' Dmitry Kulikov, and calls for an in-person hearing with Washington Capitals winger Tom Wilson, who's made it three years without a suspension. That streak will end. National Hockey League General Managers' meetings have resulted in a handful of rule changes, including some significant tweaks to Coach's Challenges which would allow teams to challenge certain minor penalties. Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella gets ejected by referee Wes McCauley, then refuses to leave, resulting in a two-game suspension along with a $50,000 fine. New York Rangers' Matt Rempe gets a major, a game, and a four-game suspension for elbowing New Jersey Devils' Jonas Siegenthaler, while Ottawa Senators' Parker Kelly sits for two. Referee Gord Dwyer derails a potential goalie fight between the the Anaheim Ducks' John Gibson and Petr Mrazek of the Chicago Blackhawks. Player Safety issues fines to the Boston Bruins' Charlie Coyle and Toronto Maple Leafs' Jake McCabe for separate cross-checking incidents. Overtime shenanigans ensue after the Buffalo Sabres' game-winning goal is reviewed - and disallowed - for an offside, well after the Sabres and Edmonton Oilers have both left the ice. The Minnesota Wild pull the goalie in overtime against the Nashville Predators, nearly invoking a little-known rule that even the players on the ice weren't aware of. Also, a pair of officials get mic'd up as linesman James Tobias confesses to some foot-speed challenges while referee Kyle Rehman chooses politeness. On this week's Scouting the Refs Podcast: Longtime NHL referee Tom Kowal heads to the BC Hockey Hall of Fame, the NHL's Department of Player Safety issues fines to Minnesota Wild's Mats Zuccarello and Nashville Predators' Michael McCarron, and a suspension to Calgary Flames defenseman Martin Pospisil. No call, no fine after Colorado Avalanche's Josh Manson slashes Chicago Blackhawks' Connor Bedard -- or to New York Rangers' Matt Rempe for charging Toronto Maple Leafs' Ilya Lyubushkin. Plus, the New Jersey Devils get a penalty shot after Anaheim Ducks' Frank Vatrano intentionally dislodges the net, while the Toronto media thought the Maple Leafs should've been awarded one against the New York Rangers. New York Rangers' Matt Rempe gets ejected for an illegal check to the head of New Jersey Devils' Nathan Bastian, but don't expect a suspension. From the same game, defenseman Jacob Trouba delivers a legal hit, and Bastian gets away with instigating a fight in return. Islanders head coach Patrick Roy fails in his first Coach's Challenge in New York on a possible missed hand pass, Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson hits Zach Benson of the Buffalo Sabres, and - whoops - a shorthanded icing at Washington Capitals vs. Montreal Canadiens. Todd and Josh check out the ruling after New York's Artemi Panarin won it for the Rangers in overtime on a dislodged net vs. the Islanders in Sunday's Stadium Series game. So, Ridly Grieg did a thing. Then Morgan Rielly did a thing. And then Player Safety did a thing. Now Rielly has appealed that thing. DOPS hands out $10k in fines to the Boston Bruins, with Matt Grzelcyk getting a major penalty and a fine for spearing the Caps' Max Pacioretty and goaltender Linus Ullmark picking up a fine for high-sticking Tampa Bay Lightning forward Mikey Eyssimont. Vancouver Canucks defenseman Nikita Zadorov gets a two-game suspension for a hit to the head of Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond that Zadorov admitted was "a bad hit." We'll also dive into Rielly vs. Grieg, the five game suspension, and all the strong opinions on both sides of the incident as we await the results of Rielly's appeal to Commissioner Gary Bettman. This week on the #RefsPodcast : A crazy situation from Canucks vs. Blue Jackets, where it looked like the officials changed the call - and the penalized player - via video review... which they're not exactly allowed to do. Todd and Josh also break down the No Goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs after goaltender interference from William Nylander cancelled out a Tyler Bertuzzi goal. NHL Player Safety has a busy week with a 5-game suspension to Montreal Canadiens' Brendan Gallagher and a 2-game ban to New York Rangers' Jacob Trouba, along with fines to Vancouver Canucks' Tyler Myers and Arizona Coyotes' Michael Kesselring. The PWHL also hands out the first suspension in league history; NHL players name the league's best and work refs; Todd an Josh throw out some proposals to get better explanations for the Situation Room's decisions; and congrats to this year's NHL All-Star officials: Frederick L'Ecuyer, Francis Charron, Brandon Gawryletz, and Trent Knorr. This week on the #RefsPodcast, a Pittsburgh player is wrongly incarcerated after the Penguins score an own goal while shorthanded -- Todd and Josh break down what exactly happened on this play. Also coming up this week: Player Safety springs into action with suspensions to Seattle Kraken's Yanni Gourde and Florida Panthers forward William Lockwood, along with a fine for Arizona Coyotes' Liam O'Brien on a play that failed to meet the automatic 10-game suspension. Plus, Sens' Vladimir Tarasenko penalized for an illegal stick flip to Brady Tkachuk, the Flyers score after the whistle against the Sens -- only to have the Sens score after the whistle later in the game, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin plays the puck from the penalty box, a whole buch of overtime picks by the Sharks, and the NCAA gives a shout out to their officials. This week on the Scouting the Refs Podcast: Two goals at Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Calgary Flames that required a second look -- one for a missed hand pass and another for a kick to a stick and in. Todd and Josh break down both plays, along with a goal from Edmonton Oilers' Zach Hyman called back for an offside, some mid-air stickwork by Montreal Canadiens' Cole Caufield, officials' All-Star Game jerseys, and the impressive success of the Maple Leafs' video crew on Coach's Challenges. Also on this week's #RefsPodcast, we look at some high hits from Tampa Bay Lightning's Emil Martinsen Lilleberg on Anaheim Ducks' Brett Leason, Toronto's Morgan Rielly on Detroit Red Wings' Joe Veleno, and an obviously illegal one from Seattle Kraken's Yanni Gourde on Edmonton's Mattias Ekholm, along with asking: is the NHL's Department of Player Safety working? (Immediately after recording this podcast, DOPS handed out two disciplinary rulings, proving that talking about DOPS is like mentioning that your team's goalie has a shutout going...) On this week's #RefsPodcast: Two too many men on the ice penalties at the same time - something the NHL hasn't seen in over a decade. How does that happen? Plus, the PWHL's first all-female officiating crew, linesman Steve Barton gets bloodied but stays in the game, no goal for the Flyers... but that's okay, it wouldn't have counted anyway. Also, Todd and Josh discuss the NHL's increase in match penalties this season, Connor McDavid's thoughts on offside reviews - including the one on Leon Draisaitl that wiped out a Zach Hyman goal, and former NHL All-Star MVP John Scott's suggestion of minimum suspensions from Player Safety. Now boarding... a whole bunch of NHL players. Breaking down the past week's boarding calls - and non-calls: Oilers' Kane on Wild's Brodin, Sabres' Robinson on Canadiens' Barron, Panthers' Cousins on Jackets' Gudbranson -- who decided to avenge the hit by taking the law into his own hands. The Wings' Perron took the same approach, picking up a six-game suspension for a crosscheck to the face after an injury to Larkin. Should players answer the bell for legal hits? Why does the NHLPA only seem to care about its suspended players, rather than the victims of their crimes? Todd and Josh break down a pair of penalty shots, including Panthers' Tkachuk vs. Canes' Kochetkov and a Zuccarello shootout goal after a pokecheck. We've also got a Devils' Smith slewfoot, an unsportsmanlike for Preds' Watson, and more. Flyers coach John Tortorella calls the NHL the “No Hit League” after Garnet Hathaway gets ejected for boarding on a late icing call. Player Safety goes after both combatants in a stick-battle, handing a two-game suspension for New Jersey Devils defenseman Brendan Smith and a $5000 fine to Philadelphia Flyers’ Travis Konecny. Detroit Red Wings blueliner Jake Walman also picks up a high-sticking fine - for lower than the league maximum.A trio of suspensions in the FPHL for middle fingers, crotch gestures, cross-checks to the face, and late hits - with one player banned for 18 games. ‘Intent to Blow’ costs the New Jersey Devils a goal against the San Jose Sharks, Arizona’s Sean Durzi puts the “bench” in bench minor, and an ECHL player gets a misconduct penalty for shooting a chicken nugget into the stands. Yep. You read that right. Plus, congrats to two retired NHL linesmen: Brian Murphy, on his induction into the USA Hockey Hall of Fame; and John Grandt on his final college hockey game before coming off-ice as the USHL’s Director of Officiating. The Florida Panthers found their way into a bunch of sticky situations, including an overturned shootout goal vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs and a controversial offside - make that ONside - against the Ottawa Senators. Referee Garrett Rank penalizes everybody on the ice, while Kyle Rehman offers up a penalty to Pittsburgh Penguins' Kris Letang. Plus, Todd and Josh discuss a late hit from Philadelphia Flyers' Garnet Hathaway on New Jersey Devils' Luke Hughes, a violent stick slash from Brendan Smith on Philadelphia Flyers' Travis Konecny, Minnesota Wild's Kirill Kaprizov getting away with a head shot against the Nashville Predators, and this week's Player Safety decisions: a two-game suspension to Minnesota Wild's Ryan Hartman and fines to New York Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba and Ottawa Senators winger Zack MacEwen. Heading into the holidays with a look at who's been nice - Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar, for sure - and who's been naughty. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Michael Bunting has a run-in with linesman Dan Kelly, San Jose's Hertl's stick gets him a seat for two, Lightning's Sergachev delivers a $5000 slash, Jersey's Haula called for a stick toss, and the dreaded 'intent to blow' no-goal call from Bruins/Panthers... It's a busy week for the NHL's Situation Room and the Department of Player Safety. Controversy in Edmonton at the Oilers' McDavid is ruled offside after an overtime review. Todd and Josh break down the play and the rule, along with suspensions to Buffalo's Jeff Skinner, Seattle's Jamie Oleksiak, and Pierre Engvall of the Toronto Maple Leafs. We've got no penalty, no suspension to Reaves for a devastating hit on Detroit's Hronek and a deep dive into stickwork, from penalties for broken sticks to calls for sticks slashed out of opponents' hands. Can we work it? The Isles' Matt Martin makes the NHL's Situation Room back it up, flip it, and reverse over two minutes of action. We've got the Rangers' Trouba trucking opponents and avoiding calls, Panthers' Tkachuk going spearing, linesmen hit by pucks... again, referee Chris Rooney on the mic, displaced net goals (and no goals - we'll break down the rule on that one), along with goalies behaving badly with Blues' Binnington and an OHL goalie fight that resulted in suspensions. The fans didn't throw hats - though they did throw garbage - after a hat-trick of disallowed goals ended the New Jersey Devils' winning streak. Winnipeg's Pierre-Luc Dubois should be getting a kickback from Player Safety after being on the receiving end of two incidents that prompted fines - $5000 to Calgary's Blake Coleman and $2500 to Carson Soucy of the Seattle Kraken. Nic Aube-Kubel gets a 3-game suspension, nothing for Vancouver's Edler after a knee-on-knee hit on the Oilers' Connor McDavid, nor for Romanov's hit on Pinto. It was a busy week for the NHL's Department of Player Safety, handing out six games of supplemental discipline, with two Habs suspensions for Josh Anderson and Juraj Slafkovsky, two games to Florida's Matthew Tkachuk for some amateur opthalmology with his hockey stick on Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick, and a high-sticking match penalty - with a $5000 fine but no suspension - to Minnesota's Kirill Kaprisov. We'll break down the plays and dig into whether they got 'em right. Plus, we can't go a week without challenging an offside challenge, as a beautiful goal from the Ducks' Trevor Zegras is wiped out by the Coach's Challenge. Did NHL Player Safety get it right on the one-game suspension to Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov?
