Everybody has that one thing they were obsessed with when they were young. Juvenalia is an Irish podcast where interesting people talk to Alan Maguire, Andrea Cleary, and Sarah Maria Griffin about the bit of pop culture that they were obsessed with when they were young, how they felt about it then and how they feel about it now. It's nice, you'll like it.

On Halloween Night 1992, the BBC aired Ghostwatch, which purported to be a live investigation into a house and family that had been plagued by poltergeist activity. The studio segments were hosted by Michael Parkinson, while children’s presenter Sarah Greene explored the house and interviewed the family at the center of the haunting. Things started to go very wrong and the show ended in disaster. Due to a quirk of scheduling, a large part of the audience didn’t realise that it was all fake. Ghostwatch is frequently listed as one of the scariest TV moments of all time. Ghostwatch was written by Stephen Volk and directed by Lesley Manning. Comics writer and artist Nick Roche joins us to relive his experience of watching Ghostwatch, aged 13, dressed as Batman for Halloween. Nick is @NickRoche . His orignal graphic novel Scarenthood is out now and he’s currently the robot designer for Transformers:EarthSpark on Nickolodeon. Alan is @alan_maguire . Hey there, Alan and Andrea have some recommendations for you now that autumn has properly hit. They’ve got an album and three TV shows. The things are: Hayley Heynderickx - I Need To Start A Garden (with some bonus chat about Cat Cylde) Frasier (told you you’d heard of some of them already) Gilmore Girls (ditto, also the cheek of Alan to go to great lengths to explain how he wanted to avoid obvious choices for autumn albums and then pick GILMORE GIRLS as a TV rec) Midnight Mass (Netflix) Alan is @alan_maguire . This is a big one. We had a little gap in our schedule so Alan & Andrea decided to get all of their feelings about Elliott Smith down in podcast form. We talk about that voice, those melodies, that guitar playing, the time he and Louis theroux interviewed each other for Select Magazine, his creative partnership with Jon Brion and so much more. Sidenote: consider this a kind of reverse trigger warning: we don’t talk about any details of Elliott Smith’s death or engage in any speculation around it in this episode. Jenny Maguire is one of the co-ordinators of Trans And Intersex Pride Dublin and she’s been obsessively watching Drag Race since she was eleven years old so it seemed only right that she came on Juvenalia to talk to us all about it. Hello, everybody's scheduled got all messed up so we didn't get a chance to record a new episode this week. We thought you might like to check out our Patreon-only bonus series Started/Finished where we, guess what, talk about what we've started and finished lately. In this one from earlier this year, Alan and Sarah talk about Citizen Sleeper, Tunic, Piranesi, Pokerface, and Chris Ware. We hope you like it and we'll be back with a regular episode in two weeks. Started/Finished is a looser recording environment than Juvenalia so you'll occasionally hear footsteps from pets and spouses during the ep but hopefully it's not too distracting. Marty Ryan of Limerick band Anna’s Anchor joins us as we dive into the sweaty indie night in 2006 to talk about landfill indie. All the greats are mentioned, The View, The Pigeon Detectives, The Wombats. We also try to figure out what makes a landfill indie band and take some time to mention the bands that get lumped into that genre that we still actually like quite a lot like The Futureheads and Maximo Park. Writer and broadcaster Aoife Barry returns to the podcast and she’s brought one of the big topics, one we assumed would have come up at some point in the previous 178 episodes but it’s here now and that’s the important thing. It’s Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride! We enthuse wildly about the film before jumping into a discussion about the types of films Hollywood is willing to make now. It’s a great hour. She co-writes the hugely popular Aisling books with Sarah Breen, you’ve probably read them but if you haven’t you should; especially if you loved Adrian Mole. Alan is @alan_maguire . The Lighthouse Cinema very kindly asked us to do a live episode as part of their Not Another Teen Season and we said absolutely yes of course we will. Alan and Andrea talked to the programmer at the Lighthouse, Charlene Lydon, about Pretty In Pink and we got into it. We had a long, enjoyable chat about every aspect of the film: the music, the dress, Harry Dean Stanton, Annie Potts, all the important stuff. There was one Team Duckie person in the audience, one Team Steff, and everybody else was Team Blane so it was a diverse crowd. Thank you to our very incisive audience members who provided comments and questions at the end and thank you to everybody who came. Thanks again to the Lighthouse for inviting us. The clips from the movie we played were as follows: 1: An intro to the boys. Duckie and Andie in the hall. Steff and Andie at her car. Blane walking into the record store. 2: Blane buying the record from Andie. 3: Montage of Andie making the dress. 4: Andie confronts Blane at his locker. Charlene is @charlenelydon . She hosts Cinema Book Club at the Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin. Alan is @alan_maguire . Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Women’s Prize longlisted author Kirsty Capes joins us to talk about the books of Jacqueline Wilson. We focused on three in particular, The Story Of Tracy Beaker, The Illustrated Mum, and Lola Rose but the conversation took in a lot more than that. We talked about Jacqueline Wilson’s fearlessness, how the topics in her books intersected with Kirsty’s life, and about Kirsty’s PhD which was about depictions of care homes in fiction. It was a fascinating chat. Kirsty is @kirstycapes . Her latest novel Love Me, Love Me Not is out July 2022. Alan is @alan_maguire . Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Sarah is @griffski . DJ and host of Housewives And Me Conor Behan returns to Juvenalia to talk about Scream. We talked about Scream way back in episode 8 but we’ve had a whole Scream Requel since then and we’re all different people now so we thought it was worth a revisit. We talked about brand activations, lens flare, press junket misdirects, the requel, and lots more. This episode came out before it was revealed that Neve Campbell would not be returning for Scream 6. Author Josh Winning joins us to talk about Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s most challenging creation, The Dark Crystal . Josh’s novel The Shadow Glass has been described as a love letter to Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal so we had a lot to talk about such as The Dark Crystal ‘s let-the-audience-figure-it-out approach to worldbuilding, the depth of that worldbuilding once you get a handle on it, the moments of humour in an otherwise pretty serious film, Jim Henson’s reading habits, the groundbreaking puppeteering, as well as some general thoughts on the Muppets and why The Henson Company seems to have avoided anything on the scale of The Dark Crystal in recent decades. It was a fascinating conversation. Note: Thanks to some Zoom weirdness, we had to use a single-track backup of this episode which means that Alan’s plan to remove some interruptions from his dog in post couldn’t happen. So apologies for any sub-par audio and dog noises. Josh is @JoshWinning . His novel The Shadow Glass is out now from Titan Books. Alan is @alan_maguire . Juvenalia is his main thing right now. It looks gorgeous and deserves to be part of our nostalgia canon. The talk leads us onto other things like how Conor's relationship to the film now that he's the Jeff Daniels, how we talk to our animals, the Steven Universe film, and Conor's new film Bicycle Thieves: Pumped Up which is at the Galway Film Fleadh from July 22nd to 25th. New Year New Us! Not really, we're exactly the same, everything is exactly the same BUT we decided to do things a little differently for our first episode of 2021. Alan, Sarah, and Cassie Delaney all picked the thing that absolutely changed them forever, their Juvenalia Prime topic and talked about it. Cassie's Creep Dive energy was a bad influence and we ran out of time before we could talk about Sarah's thing so we're going to do that on Patreon at a later date. Right here, right now though you get to listen to Cassie talk about Sister Act II and Alan talk about The Bends. In between there's lots of talk about choirs and just the joy of singing in harmony. Happy new year everybody. We made it to 100! We would have liked to do a live show to celebrate but well *gestures in any direction* so instead Alan, Sarah, and Ellen(!) got together on Zoom to talk about some of their favourite things from the years they were born (1984, 1988, and 1992 respectively). So what are those things? Well there's This Is Spinal Tap, The Secret History, Red Dwarf, The Replacements, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Barney along with a live reading of some Barney creepypasta. It was extremely nice to have the OG Juvenalia Three back together. We hope you like it too. Thanks for sticking around for a hundred episodes. Alan is @alan_maguire . Jenna Stoeber, video producer at Polygon and co-host of Fandalites, joined Alan and guest co-host Caroline O'Donoghue to talk about the classic anime series Sailor Moon. Welcome to our big 50th episode party! We took over the Vintage Room in The Workman's Club and filled it with sound people. We did a little quiz and gave away some extremely desirable prizes. Then we talked to Oscar-winning graphic designer Annie Atkins whose work you've seen in The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle Of Dogs, Bridge Of Spies, The Tudors, and loads more. Annie talked to us about the classic and only mildly disturbing family comedy BIG. It was a really interesting conversation and also it's one of the very special times where Alan, Ellen, and Sarah are all in the same room so that was fun. Thank you so much to Alan and Brian at HeadStuff for making this episode happen and to everybody at The Workman's who gave us the space and set us up and made sure we didn't set fire to anything. We had a scheduling mix-up so Alan and Ellen sat down and had a chat about the thing that they’d pick if they were a Juvenalia guest, The Simpsons. This is not a rigorous history of The Simpsons, we jump around a lot and probably get things wrong but this is OUR Simpsons so let us have it. Happy New Year. We have zero solid plans for what’s happening with Juvenalia this year but we’re sure it’ll be very exciting and good. Hello and welcome to the Juvenalia Christmas Smalltacular 2017! We decided to take it back to basics this year. Just Alan, Ellen, and Sarah talking about some of their favourite Christmas memories and how their 2017 went. This somehow led to a solid ten minutes of chatting about how much we love the McElroys and The Adventure Zone but the rest is pretty Christmassy with talk of Mega Drives, N64s, selection boxes, carols, Carol, and lots of other stuff. The singer who did the version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas that made Alan cry in college was Niall McCabe. Alan is sorry that he couldn’t remember Niall’s surname. Follow Alan, Ellen, and Sarah on Twitter, we’re good and sound. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who listened, subscribed, or supported Juvenalia in any way this year. We love making this podcast and love that you’re out there listening. HAPPY CHRISTMAS! Well we did it. We did a live show at the Dublin Podcast Festival. We did a quiz that went on slightly longer than planned and then we talked to singer and actor Maria Doyle Kennedy of The Commitments, Orphan Black, The Tudors, Dexter, Father Ted, and loads more about The Wizard Of Oz with some detours along the way to talk about mermaids, ghosts, Billie Holiday, and Maria’s directorial debut A Different Kind Of Day, before we finished with a song from Maria and her husband Kieran (who is a lovely man) from Maria’s self-titled new album which is available now. As you can hear from the episode we were delighted to meet Maria and do a live episode so thanks to everyone who came and thanks to HeadStuff and Aiken for organising a podcast festival and letting us be a part of it. HELLO! It’s a bonus episode of Juvenalia. We’re delighted to present the pilot episode of Movieboyz, a very special podcast starring some of the biggest boyz in Hollywood. So here’s what happened. We’ve been trying to get Lukas Haas on the show for ages but he was reluctant. We just couldn’t find the right way to entice him to come on. We found out that Lukas really wants to make a podcast with his friends but he’s infamously thrifty and refuses to pay for recording time. HeadStuff have started making their podcast studio available to the public for a small fee so we offered the use of the studio free of charge to Mr. Haas if he’d agree to appear on the show with us. He agreed and turned up with his friends Tobey Maguire, Leonardo Di Caprio, and Kevin “Nick” Connolly, better known as the Pussy Posse from fifteen years ago. They recorded this and then disappeared into the sunset, leaving us with no Lukas Haas interview and twenty minutes of Hollywood stars trying to remember what films they’ve been in. Enjoy.

Roe joined Sarah and Alan to talk youth, Trump, depression, feminism, rockbiters, safe spaces, Pantigate, and luck dragons, and we address the most important question of our time: Is Twitter actually Fantasia? The hour just flew by. Hello if you’re joining us for the first time because of a list you may have seen us on. Hopefully you’ll stick around. If you like us maybe consider subscribing and leaving a review? Also, Sarah’s AMAZING novel Spare And Found Parts is out now so you should buy it and enjoy it as much as I did. Sinéad Gleeson is a broadcaster, writer, editor of three short story anthologies, host of The Book Show on Radio One, half of The Anti-Room, and all round enviable sound person. She very kindly joined Alan and Ellen to talk about Top of the Pops and related matters. We were a little in awe of her because she’s very cool and interviews important authors and musicians all the time and we’re two plucky ragamuffins just trying our best. We plied her with donuts until she liked us and we had a good old chat. As well as TOTP, we talked about where the young people get their music from these days, hearing songs properly in big clubs, Buster Bloodvessel related accidents, interviewing Kate Bush and loads of other little bits. Juvenalia is eighteen episodes old! We can legally drink now. We wouldn’t do that though because drinking is immoral. Playwright Peter Dunne joins Alan & Ellen to talk about Jack Clayton’s extremely terrifying 1961 horror film The Innocents starring Deborah Kerr. We talked about all kinds of stuff: watching inappropriate things when you’re young which is basically the theme of Juvenalia, creepy children, Salem, Amityville, local mythology, whether any of us actually believe in the supernatural (spoiler: some of us do), Ouija boards, demonic possession, fear, nature v nurture, and loads more. Peter was great, we loved him. Obviously it would have been nice to get this episode out in time for Halloween but that’s not how we roll here and in fact, late November could be a perfect time to watch The Innocents for the first time. Who knows? Peter’s audio horror walking experience Eerie is in Smock Alley until November 30th so get your skates on and Peter’s extreme immersive horror club Morb could be happening anywhere, maybe even behind you right now. Probably not though, probably somewhere scary. Follow Juvenalia on Twitter Juvenalia original artwork by Dee McDonnell This episode was produced by Alan Bennett and Alan Maguire.

Anna Carey is a journalist and the author of the Real Rebecca series of YA books and the upcoming The Making Of Mollie about the Irish suffragette movement. She sat down with Alan and Ellen for a DELIGHTFUL chat about 80s British girl’s comics like Mandy and Bunty. It was very informative and fun and I urge you to seek out some of the comics for yourself. One of our favourite standups and people Andréa Farrell joined Alan & Ellen to talk about Stephen Spielberg’s classic Jaws. Inspired by Spielberg’s sparing use of the shark in Jaws, we often talked about everything and anything besides Jaws, making the bits where we actually talked about the film all the more special. Make sure to listen to the whole thing as at some point we decided to record an episode within an episode about To Kill A Mockingbird just because. This was fun. Talk soon. ok bye. bye. byebyebye. Shawna Scott is the founder of Sex Siopa, Ireland’s first health and design focused sex shop. She’s also a Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion fanatic who has been waiting “her entire life” to talk about it at length. She talked to Alan and Sarah for a long time about the film, being a bit of a weirdo growing up, the Pacific North-West, choreographed dance routines with Alan Cumming, the magic of Lisa Kudrow, Mira Sorvino’s magical voice, cool kids, and loads more. It was fun. Follow Juvenalia on Twitter Juvenalia original artwork by Dee McDonnell This episode was produced by Eugene Brennan. Elva Carri is the founder of Girl Crew, a brilliant idea that’s been changing the lives of women all over the world since it started. She joined Alan and Ellen to talk about The Den, another brilliant idea that changed lives all over Ireland in the 80s, 90s, and part of the 00s. We talked about Ray D’Arcy, Ian Dempsey, the other humans who we didn’t remember all that much, Zig & Zag, Zuppy, Dustin, Snotser, Socky, Podge & Rodge, and the grim inevitability of death. Comedian, actor, writer, philanthropist, and host of The Alison Spittle Show, Alison Spittle, joins Alan and Sarah for a trip down memory lane as we talk about our wild and varied experiences with chat rooms and message boards. Alison was an old-fashioned troll, the good funny kind not the ones that harass people on Twitter, Alan was boring but earnest, and Sarah forged deep friendships. We cover all the angles here. Alison had to duck out early to record her own podcast so we didn’t get to everything we’d have liked but we’re definitely, definitely having Alison back real soon. Comedian Teresa Coyne joins Alan and Ellen to talk about the lesser-known but actually quite good YA series The Saddle Club. It was kind of an equine Babysitter’s Club. Teresa was a fan, Alan’s now a convert, Ellen was jetlagged. A good time was had by all. We learn all about the Saddle Club and Teresa's own history with horses stopping along the way to learn the history of dressage, horse maintenance, helicopter schools, moving from London to the West of Ireland, Dustin the Turkey, car boot sales, old Irish methods for warding off faerie folk, aristocratic French shoe customs, ghostwriters, the majesty of Bonnie Bryant, disappointing TV adaptations, and lots of other stuff. It's a good one. We liked Teresa a lot, you will too. Darragh McCausland is a writer whose work has appeared in The Dublin Review, Lighthouse, Gorse, and Stonecutter. On this episode of Juvenalia he talks to Alan and Sarah about, well, loads of stuff really but we start with early first-person shooter Wolfenstein 3D. From there we move on to shareware, being bad at computer games, isometric viewpoints, Eve Online, multiplayer vs singleplayer, the Atari 7800, Dads playing games, Charlie Brooker, German FPS Smugglers, Green Blood, the first person to know about computers in Kells, First Person Nausea, Let's Play videos, Abandonware, FEZ, stylised graphics are better than realistic graphics, True Detective season 2, being a woman who likes games, and being or not being a gamer. And also a bit of Barthes and Adorno because we're ~fancy~. We're also joined by Louise's dog Harry who can be heard voicing his appreciation for the combination of vulnerability and humour that Neve Campbell brings to the role of Sidney. We also talk about Kevin Williamson's vast pop culture empire, the Scream quadrilogy in general, the death of teen movies, why is modern horror so grim, fake blood, meta jokes, the 90s, the career of Matthew Lillard, Courtney Cox's brilliance as Gail Weathers, and loads more. 2FM DJ and writer Louise McSharry joins Alan Maguire and Sarah Maria Griffin to talk about 80s CLASSIC Dirty Dancing. We brought a wide range of Dirty Dancing experience to the episode. Louise has seen Dirty Dancing many, many times. Alan saw it once when he was like eight or nine. Sarah watched it for the first time that morning. Did she like it? Have a listen and find out. What else did we talk about? Good question. We talked: a lot about how dreamy Patrick Swayze is. A lot. A whole lot. About being too young to watch Dirty Dancing, about our respective weddings and the kinds of dancing we got up to, about plastic surgery, about fictional summer camps, about music, about The Fountainhead, and many other things. Alan and Ellen talk to comedian Damon Blake of Fox and Blake about the mind-bending 1990 anti-drugs cartoon Cartoon All-Stars To The Rescue in which The Smurfs, Alvin & The Chipmunks, Alf, Garfield, Winnie The Pooh, Slimer, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Muppet Babies, and Bugs Bunny team up to convince a drug-taking teen to change his ways. It’s powerful stuff. Alan Maguire and Ellen Tannam talk to writer Sarah Maria Griffin about a film that was important to her as a teenager, The Fifth Element. Questions asked and answered in this episode include: Is The Fifth Element a noir? Who would we cast in a gender-swapped The Fifth Element? Is Ruby Rhod a queer icon? Is Bruce Willis a hot dad? Could The Fifth Element be made today? Is it weird and cool that Ellen and Sarah had never met before this episode but have something very important in common? How did Sarah turn some of the issues with being a Woman Who Likes Sci-Fi on their head while writing her first novel Spare And Found Parts? Is there really any need to watch Breaking Bad or True Detective? How strong are Alan’s keratin levels? Also, Jean Paul Gaultier, Bruce Willis’s Disney Sex Thriller, Zelda, Twin Peaks, home cinemas built by dads, CAPITALISM, and loads more. We had a Very Good Chat as they call it in formal chat circles. That’s the official term for it. I checked. This is the first episode of Juvenalia.
