204: Ghostwatch (1992) with Nick Roche
On Halloween Night 1992, the BBC aired Ghostwatch, which purported to be a live investigation into a house and family that had been plagued by poltergeist activity. The studio segments were hosted by Michael Parkinson, while children’s presenter Sarah Greene explored the house and interviewed the family at the center of the haunting. Things started to go very wrong and the show ended in disaster. Due to a quirk of scheduling, a large part of the audience didn’t realise that it was all fake. Ghostwatch is frequently listed as one of the scariest TV moments of all time. Ghostwatch was written by Stephen Volk and directed by Lesley Manning. Comics writer and artist Nick Roche joins us to relive his experience of watching Ghostwatch, aged 13, dressed as Batman for Halloween. Nick is @NickRoche . It was a fascinating conversation. Welcome to our big 50th episode party! We took over the Vintage Room in The Workman's Club and filled it with sound people. We did a little quiz and gave away some extremely desirable prizes. Then we talked to Oscar-winning graphic designer Annie Atkins whose work you've seen in The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle Of Dogs, Bridge Of Spies, The Tudors, and loads more. Annie talked to us about the classic and only mildly disturbing family comedy BIG. It was a really interesting conversation and also it's one of the very special times where Alan, Ellen, and Sarah are all in the same room so that was fun. Thank you so much to Alan and Brian at HeadStuff for making this episode happen and to everybody at The Workman's who gave us the space and set us up and made sure we didn't set fire to anything. We donated all of our ticket sales for the night to Together For Yes and we're delighted to say that we raised €300 so thank you to everybody that bought a ticket. Note: We are shamble people and away from the safe confines of the HeadStuff studio we have a tendency to make microphones malfunction. Caroline O’Donoghue (@czaroline) is a contributing editor with The Pool and an author whose first book, Promising Young Women, will be released by Virago in early 2018. She joined Alan and Sarah to talk about 90’s sitcoms with a particular focus on Frasier. We talked a lot about David Hyde Pierce, the wonders of Daphne Moon and Lilith, metrosexuality, and the art of farce. We also jumped off into talks about Just Shoot Me, Cybil, and the effect that Friends had on a generation of Irish people. Then we finished up with a little metatalk about Juvenalia itself. Poker Chat with the Movieboyz
HELLO! It’s a bonus episode of Juvenalia. We’re delighted to present the pilot episode of Movieboyz, a very special podcast starring some of the biggest boyz in Hollywood. So here’s what happened. We’ve been trying to get Lukas Haas on the show for ages but he was reluctant. We just couldn’t find the right way to entice him to come on. We found out that Lukas really wants to make a podcast with his friends but he’s infamously thrifty and refuses to pay for recording time. HeadStuff have started making their podcast studio available to the public for a small fee so we offered the use of the studio free of charge to Mr. Haas if he’d agree to appear on the show with us. He agreed and turned up with his friends Tobey Maguire, Leonardo Di Caprio, and Kevin “Nick” Connolly, better known as the Pussy Posse from fifteen years ago. They recorded this and then disappeared into the sunset, leaving us with no Lukas Haas interview and twenty minutes of Hollywood stars trying to remember what films they’ve been in. Enjoy.

Sinéad Gleeson is a broadcaster, writer, editor of three short story anthologies, host of The Book Show on Radio One, half of The Anti-Room, and all round enviable sound person. She very kindly joined Alan and Ellen to talk about Top of the Pops and related matters. We were a little in awe of her because she’s very cool and interviews important authors and musicians all the time and we’re two plucky ragamuffins just trying our best. We plied her with donuts until she liked us and we had a good old chat. As well as TOTP, we talked about where the young people get their music from these days, hearing songs properly in big clubs, Buster Bloodvessel related accidents, interviewing Kate Bush and loads of other little bits. We talked about all kinds of stuff: watching inappropriate things when you’re young which is basically the theme of Juvenalia, creepy children, Salem, Amityville, local mythology, whether any of us actually believe in the supernatural (spoiler: some of us do), Ouija boards, demonic possession, fear, nature v nurture, and loads more. Peter was great, we loved him. Obviously it would have been nice to get this episode out in time for Halloween but that’s not how we roll here and in fact, late November could be a perfect time to watch The Innocents for the first time.
