Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Why should a childfree Latina care about starving children? Because empathy is free! And if you're someone who pays attention, you know that a well-educated public is the foundation of a strong society. But here’s the hard truth: hungry kids struggle to learn . We’re far from being the strong, well-educated society we could be, and that gap is costing us all more than we realize. Just look at what's going on in this country right now. Here’s a heartbreaking stat: 14 million children in the U.S. woke up this morning without enough food to eat. Let that sink in. 14 million. That’s why, as part of the global Podcasthon project highlighting worthy causes, this episode is shining a light on the incredible work No Kid Hungry is doing to fight child hunger across the country. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Tired of getting sucked into unproductive arguments online and in real life? Then you might be ready to break free from The Blame Game. The unproductive nature of blame hinders our growth and relationships. While it feels good to blame others, this primal instinct is not conducive to problem-solving or even to making progress . But the brain is wired for blame, not praise, so breaking free from this basic human process takes intention—and practice/ So if you want to design your best life, let's start rewiring for praise and progress! With personal anecdotes from a career in event management, we'll examine the importance of taking responsibility and cultivating empathy, emotional intelligence, and collaboration. Let's become aware of the dangers of manipulation and fearmongering, and focus on our own rest and self-care during these disturbingly turbulent times. Share your thoughts! Text in your answer to: How do you stop your thoughts from spiraling when you're in a negative headspace; what do you do to interrupt that train of thought? Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! If you had a negative friend who always brought down the group hang, you'd eventually stop inviting them out, right? So why do you put up with this dismal friend inside your own head?? Imposter syndrome and its champion, your inner critic, will keep you feeling small, scared, and accomplishing nothing of note. Because what that inner critic wants most for you is to be safe, except it does that through fear. Like the saying goes: a ship in a harbor is safe but that is not what ships are built for. You're built for way more than what your imposter syndrome allows you to believe. So let's begin dismantling it by creating an inner cheerleader instead. Rewire your brain to support your endeavors without questioning if you're worthy and let's boost your self-confidence so we can deal with...everything else. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! What can we learn from Tom Brady, a rich white guy with 7 Super Bowl rings, aka the GOAT of football? First of all, despite what you may have heard, he's not perfect. Surprisingly, he's been underestimated and he probably also suffers from imposter syndrome, especially right now as he's currently the WHOA: Worst Host of All-time. Watching Tom Brady struggle through his new gig proves that just because you’re incredible at one thing doesn’t mean you’ll automatically crush something else. But there’s freedom in being bad at things, as long as you’re willing to actually get in the arena . Are you? This episode breaks down 7 unexpected lessons from Brady's career—one for each of his Super Bowl rings—including his on-air fumbles: from why coaching isn’t just for rookies to and how sometimes, you just gotta jump in that pool. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! What do we do when systems fail us? We lean on each other in community. Amidst the noise during this transition in power, let's pause and reflect on the power of community to rise up, make “good trouble,” and create real change. From neighbors organizing mutual aid to therapists offering pro bono support during the LA wildfires, this is a love letter to the ways we show up for each other when it matters most. Inspired by John Lewis, Dr. Lorgia García Peña, and other changemakers, their wisdom shows us how connection and solidarity can be forms of quiet rebellion. Whether it’s amplifying grassroots efforts, questioning what we’ve been taught to accept as normal, or finding small ways to support those around us, community is how we push forward together. Let's march forward full of hope with practical ideas for building stronger, more connected communities—because when we come together, there’s no limit to what we can do. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Ever wanted to start a band? Then this is your year! In 2025 we're all grabbing our favorite instruments and getting loud! We're also choosing joy—bold, defiant joy—in the face of Project 2025's looming threat. They want to impose so-called "traditional Christian values" on all Americans by stripping women of their autonomy and power, and silencing anyone who refuses to conform. Bottom line: they want us all to shut up and stop being inconvenient. Sounds boring. Instead, let's create a joyfully raucous, gloriously outlandish concerto of resistance. It starts with a single conversation—a simple arrangement of voices, like the opening notes of an orchestral masterpiece. Every voice, every instrument, every conversation builds the symphony of rebellion. Are you ready to join the band? No experience required. Come as you are, and be ready to play! Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! In a media landscape that continues to demonstrate its selective empathy, the recent disparate coverage of two tragic and avoidable deaths starkly illustrates Professor Evelyn Alsultany's core argument about media representation. While extensive airtime has been devoted to the death of a white CEO, the death of Black Girl Disney's Dominique Brown has received far less attention—a painful reminder of how media systematically determines whose stories matter and whose lives are deemed worthy of collective mourning. Media representation isn't just about entertainment—it's a powerful force that shapes our perceptions of marginalized communities. In this compelling re-released interview, Professor Alsultany dismantles the harmful stereotypes and narrow narratives that reduce complex human experiences to simplistic caricatures. In her groundbreaking book, Broken: The Failed Promise of Muslim Inclusion, Professor Alsultany dissects the harmful “logics” that justify exclusion and inequality. She boldly challenges the idea that marginalized people should need to be a "good" version of themselves to be accepted. As a Cuban-Iraqi American, a childfree Latina, and a leading expert on Arab and Muslim representation, Evelyn's work exposes how Hollywood and media narratives that legitimize exclusion and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Through her research, we gain a better understanding of how our perceptions are shaped— and how we can push back against injustice . This episode explores themes of identity, representation, and accountability in the wake of historical events currently unfolding in Arab and Muslim countries, and how our media is covering them. The professor invites us to step out of our comfort zones, confront the systems of oppression we live within, and listen to voices we too often ignore. ⚠️ Content note : This episode discusses terrorism, rape, school shootings, and genocide. Also the death toll in Palestine as of Dec 9, 2024 is now 42,000 people. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! My dear childfree Latinas, we're obviously in trouble. The assignment everyone seemed so excited to turn in last week was an utter failure. Like most group projects, it sucked. So what do we do now? How do we exist in a world where people voted for both AOC (yay!) and Donald Trump (boo!)? How do we co-exist with people who have effectively told us we mean nothing to them? Well, if we mean nothing then we have nothing to lose. So let's try to combat some of our toxic cultural bullshit while we still have our rights intact. 5 takeaways from this episode: Reject imposter syndrome; it’s a form of self-sabotage. Embrace the power of your voice—speak up and be heard. Be mindful of your media consumption; diet isn’t just what we eat. Become media literate to avoid being a “useful idiot.” Question religious narratives about women’s roles; reclaim the story. Finally, pass your knowledge on to the people around you. Break the patriarchy's influence over us one conversation at a time. Grassroots, mi gente. That's where we'll thrive. We've done it before, and we'll do it again. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! As we gear up for another contentious election cycle, it's prudent to ask: why do we keep voting against our own best interests? Angela Chavez, Communications and Public Affairs Director for Courage California and a childfree Latina, explains it very plainly: because you're being manipulated by immensely well-funded propaganda, all day and every day. The 2020 Proposition 22 campaign is a prime example of this! So how do we find out the truth behind the constant disinformation crusades that play on our emotions about crime and homelessness, swaying us to vote against the greater good? Angela educates us about the tools that Courage California provides for CA citizens to make those informed choices (these tools exist in all states too!), like the Courage Score legislators receive on their voting records. Angela also challenges conventional narratives about political success—emphasizing that elections are less about "winning" and more about "moving the needle" toward meaningful progress. And how much of that work is done down ballot, not at the federal level. Finally, Angela shares actionable steps for young voters (and all of us) to take so we can overcome election apathy to create real change. Voting for change is a group project, and the very least all of us can do on November 5th is show up to vote. Groups like Courage California have already done all the homework for us. So if we all want to get an A+, get out the vote and encourage everyone around you to send in their ballots, too. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! In Part 2 of this series with TikTok sensation and childfree Latina, Yoreim Virella, we continue our deep dive into the complex realities of modern motherhood: the societal neglect of new mothers, the devaluation of women beyond motherhood, and the systemic challenges faced by parents. All of these truths are conveniently obscured by our fast-paced, capitalist culture. We also take a critical look at the trad-wife aesthetic that's currently flooding social media, exposing this dangerous propaganda that lures women into believing that traditional roles of wife and mother lead to an easy, carefree life. It’s time to talk about the truth behind the so-called soft life, because what truly makes a "soft life" is self-awareness. And that's something 80% of people lack. How can we do better? Start by recognizing the harm of hustle culture, and the toxic individualism that’s driving us apart as a society. And learn to heal. Because we ALL have healing to do if we're going to achieve a soft life. To lighten things up, we also get into the hilarious divide between childfree pet-owners and childfree non-pet-owners. Are pets a status symbol for the childfree? About Yoreim : Yoreim is originally from Corozal, Puerto Rico and she considers herself a multi-passionate who enjoys combining a practical career with humanitarian work, content creation, and entrepreneurship. She has over a decade of experience in human resources working in the non-profit, private, and federal sectors. While in the federal sector, she had a unique opportunity to merge her human resources expertise with disaster response work. Yoreim has been involved in multiple national disaster and humanitarian missions, from deploying to Puerto Rico during Hurricane Maria to supporting CDC and OMB/White House leadership behind the scenes during the COVID-19 response efforts. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! In part 1 of a two-part interview, we're diving into an enlightening conversation with Yoreim Virella, a Diásporican, humanitarian, entrepreneur, and content creator. Yoreim shares her personal journey about growing up in a predominantly Catholic town and navigating societal expectations, including wondering if she should have a child to avoid being "left behind." She has keen insights on the religious impact on motherhood and how those beliefs shape the way women are expected to navigate life after becoming mothers. We unpack the idea that mothers often disappear into their roles, losing a sense of self and identity, and discuss the glaring lack of support for those on the parenting journey. Is motherhood all it's cracked up to be...or is it a scam? It’s a thought-provoking episode as we break down stereotypes, celebrate authentic living, and champion the freedom to choose a life that's truly your own. Stay tuned for part two, where we continue this important conversation. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Misogyny: that's what Project 2025 is advocating for and this Childless Cat Lady isn't having it. For every social media warrior who proudly declares #IUnderstandTheAssignment, there's a counterpart ready to gleefully embrace a wave of Christofascist extremism that threatens to strip women of our hard-earned freedoms. So what is the assignment? It's to prevent Project 2025 from gaining traction in the upcoming election. The solution is clear: vote for the party that stands firm against the erosion of our rights. Don't like the options? Feeling disillusioned by genocide and all the other crap both parties seem to allow? Remember: voting isn't marriage, it' it's a bus ride towards our collective goal. And our goal—the "assignment"—is to get as far away from the dystopian nightmare that the ultra-conservative Christofascist authors of Project 2025 envision. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Part 3 in the childfree wedding series comes to us in the form of an email from Vivian, a now "retired" childfree housewife. Vivian's wedding planning started off as a wild ride navigating family expectations, Catholicism, and even some social shaming, all because she dared to say "I don't want kids." Having now been married for over 20 years, her life's been a winning combination of freedom, happiness, and amazing adventures (including a home in paradise), all because Vivian and her husband dared to be different. This isn't just a wedding story; it's a shining example of what life looks like when you choose your own path, have self-confidence in the face of a passive-aggressive in-laws, and design a life that makes you truly happy—a vida más chévere! It's totally avoidable, but in our hustle culture, we often wear exhaustion like a badge of honor. Trust that there's nothing honorable about sacrificing your health. Take it from someone who has suffered the consequences! Us childfree Latinas are especially susceptible to this because we're raised to thrive on resiliency, sacrifice, and people pleasing. For many of us, that's how our parents (and their parents) survived so that's all they know. And because we're childfree, people take for granted that we have additional time and/or energy available to work even harder. It's time to change this rigged game. Success shouldn't come at the expense of your well-being. Let's figure out how to work within our capacity limits, not against them. In this episode, guest Karenna Soto will show you: How to recognize physical and emotional signals, set boundaries, and prioritize self-care to escape hustle culture and make time for yourself. The importance of regularly checking in with your body, emotions, and energy levels to gauge your "battery life" and prioritize tasks to avoid burnout. Why making internal shifts, setting boundaries, and focusing on your health might feel uncomfortable, but are essential for thriving in a demanding world and building true resilience. Get from burnout into balance with these tools and strategies for a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle. To get the full show notes, and an episode transcript, go to PauletteErato.com/shownotes . Loneliness is a universal human emotion that can often go unaddressed and underestimated in its impact. In a society where the focus is too often on productivity and success, acknowledging feelings of isolation and vulnerability can be perceived as a weakness. In this heartfelt episode, host and childfree Latina Paulette Erato shares her personal journey navigating the complicated emotions around loneliness in the wake of a health scare. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! What does media bias have to do with how marginalized groups are perceived? EVERYTHING. Media bias—the way we see certain groups on TV and in movies—has a massive impact on how we view people in real life. And whether or not we see them as real human beings, or merely caricatures we don't have to care about. If people in the margins don't comport ourselves in a very specific way, then we aren't deemed worth giving a damn about. In her book, Broken: The Failed Promise of Muslim Inclusion , Professor Evelyn Alsultany painstakingly tracks the "logics that legitimize excluding people, that legitimize inequality" and rejects the need for anyone to act like a "good" to be accepted. Aside from being an expert on Arab and Muslim representation, Evelyn is also a childfree Latina. As a Cuban-Iraqi American, her work exposing why we view Arabs and Muslims through a narrow, Hollywood-perpetuated lens can helps us understand why we might make unfair assumptions about people based on their choices, skin color, accent, religion, and so on. It's obnoxious, it's outrageous, and we shouldn't accept it! Professor Alsultany is pushing back, and she's inviting us to do it, too. This episode contains mentions of terrorism, rape, school shootings, and genocide. Evelyn's bio: Evelyn Alsultany is a professor in the Department of American Studies and Ethnicity at USC’s Dornsife College and a leading expert on the history of representations of Arabs and Muslims in the U.S. media and on forms of anti-Arab and anti-Muslim racism. Alsultany is the author of Broken: The Failed Promise of Muslim Inclusion (2022) which was listed as one of the 10 best scholarly books of 2022 by The Chronicle of Higher Education; was a finalist for the Association of American Publishers’ Prose Award; and received Honorable Mention for the Arab American National Museum book award. She is also the author of Arabs and Muslims in the Media: Race and Representation after 9/11 (2012). Alsultany has served as an educator and consultant for Hollywood studios (Netflix, Amazon, NBC Universal) and co-authored criteria, the Obeidi-Alsultany Test, to help Hollywood improve representations of Muslims. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Want more confidence? Hack your brain! While brain hacking sounds mysterious (if not illegal—and painful!), it's simply the latest way to describe an effective neuroscientific method that rewards you with a “hit” of the happiness (or pleasure) hormone, dopamine. You can harness this to increase your motivation, which then fuels your confidence and can positively impact your creativity, and even productivity. How do you access it? By recognizing your own progress, or what I call “celebrating your wins.” Is it really that simple? Yes! But how? Because when you recognize and celebrate your progress, your brain releases dopamine, aka the pleasure hormone. It works for babies, but we’ve forgotten this “one simple trick” as adults. This re-released episode was originally titled 3 Epic Reasons to Celebrate Your Wins. Voted on by Substack subscribers as the last episode of the year because they wanted to finish 2023 strong! You can too by listening to this episode for the 3 key takeaways: what's happening in your brain when you celebrate how depriving yourself of these celebrations hurts you why doing this regularly keeps you motivated and excited to get what you want Don't forget to join the Substack community to make your voice heard on future episodes and content too: https://pauletteerato.substack.com/ To get the full show notes, and an episode transcript, go to PauletteErato.com/shownotes . Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Storyteller Talia Molé, an activist, anthropologist, and artist, shares her journey confronting societal pressures, the impact of language on reproductive rights, and her mission to redefine motherhood. From fighting for a hysterectomy to battling for debt forgiveness, Talia is a powerhouse. In this re-released episode, we dive deep into the significance of storytelling, dismantling patriarchal narratives, and celebrating various forms of motherhood and family. While emphasizing the need for storytelling as a vehicle for healing and social change, Talia also touches upon how society's narrow definition of motherhood undermines the varied forms of support and love that individuals can offer to their communities. As the conversation unfolds, Paulette and Talia emphasize the importance of giving voices to different forms of motherhood beyond traditional perceptions, fostering solidarity and acceptance within their communities. Key takeaways from this episode: Embracing the concept of "child-free" over "childless" empowers individuals to recognize their freedom and choice, instead of framing their lives as lacking something. Challenging the dominant narrative of motherhood involves elevating diverse forms of motherhood, resisting societal restrictions, and sustaining life through creative practices. Through storytelling and artistic expression, individuals can advocate for bodily autonomy and work towards social change, offering healing and support to their communities. More about Talia: Talia Molé believes in the artist as a rebellious and revolutionary teacher whose purpose is to disrupt the status quo inspiring conversations that lead to greater questioning and awakening within a communal body. As an artist, she has dedicated her time to understanding social change through different social spaces and disciplines within academia and beyond. She molded and polished her role as an activist/scholar with the help of a B.F.A. in Theatre Performance, an M.S. in Counseling, and a PhD in Anthropology and Social Change. Her field of research and exploration revolves around lived expressions of mother/motherhood/mothering, within marginalized populations, that serve as a radical remembrance of matriarchal ancestry, lineage and community. Talia is the founder of "We are Phoenixing" a creative consultation business dedicated to mentoring creative practitioners. This week's guest Dra. Mildred Ortiz is the child of immigrants, and has dedicated her career to providing clinical support to individuals from diverse backgrounds, including monolingual Spanish speakers, in Los Angeles, CA. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! It's wedding season! So let's dive into the world of weddings, particularly childfree weddings, and the significance of setting boundaries during this emotionally charged event. Weddings should be about the happy couple but can also lead to truly toxic drama that rips families apart. Everyone has an opinion, and they all think theirs is the most correct. They're also steeped in tradition, that T-word that too often is a crutch for unhealthy behavior and expectations. So how did Jamie, a childfree coach, deal with the challenges she faced during wedding planning while also firmly holding to her boundaries—and do so with limited drama? Key takeaways from this episode include: That setting boundaries during wedding planning can be challenging, but effectively allows couples to avoid unnecessary drama and focus on having an intimate and supportive gathering of loved ones. How boundary setting spills into all areas of life—not just for wedding planning! Being clear about your desires (like not wanting children), asserting yourself, and letting go of others' expectations is key to living a happier and more fulfilling life overall. Jamie's example of how her boundaries allowed her to enjoy the vision for her wedding AND allowed for compromise with those problematic family members. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! We've been socialized to believe that the traditional "life script" is the ultimate path to happiness. And anyone who doesn't follow it is doomed. Which puts childfree people, especially childfree Latinas y Latinas, at total odds with societal norms. But who made up those rules? What is behind these supposed ideals? The patriarchy! It dictates our sometimes ridiculous and suffocating social and cultural norms, such as: Centering and prioritizing only nuclear families with 2 parents and children The dreaded R-word: REGRET, and if parents express any then they're automatically labeled "bad parents" The way the media portrays childfree people How do we fight back? The first step is recognizing we're all on the same team. Childfree people AND parents are all subjects of the patriarchy. Let's stop dividing ourselves into us-vs-them factions, and fight the actual enemy—not each other. Check out a bonus episode on this same topic on YouTube . Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Just because the stereotype that childfree people have more disposable income exists, doesn't make it true. And even if it is, childfree Latinas y Latines might have the added burden of a scarcity mindset instilled upon us by our culture. Instead of generational wealth, we inherit generational trauma . Did you know that less than 0.5% of Latines in the US have money in the stock market? That's not even a full percentage point, it's half of one. And that's by design. Financial educator, Linda Garcia is on a mission to change that. She's convinced we can all be well on our way to becoming millionaires in the next 10 years if we start now. So what's her secret? In her book Wealth Warrior: Eight Steps for Communities of Color to Conquer the Stock Market , Linda breaks down the barriers communities of colors routinely face and provides readers with the tools to get to the root of our money wounds so that brown people can bridge the wealth gap. The book is a must-read if you've ever felt intimidated in white spaces. While yes, you will learn about buying stocks and how to build a portfolio, what's really at the heart of it is dismantling the idea that being rich, having money, and living without financial stress is not something you're allowed to have. Let's unlearn that toxic BS, mi gente! Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Shame: everyone knows what it is because shame is a universal emotion. So how do you become shame-free? Although not Latina herself, guest Rena Martine shares her expertise in addressing shame, which is deeply rooted in Latine culture. Rena is a former DA who now works as an evidence-based intimacy coach, helping women love their bodies, experience deep intimacy, and have great sex, shame-free. Rena also emphasizes the importance of understanding our family's input based on what we know now, without resorting to blaming or hating our parents because of the difference in our cultural lenses. Because shame is instilled from an early age, not just from the messages perpetuated within family, but also through religion, personal experiences, and all the media we consume. *TRIGGER WARNING* The interview delves into sensitive topics such as PCOS, pregnancy termination, and our individual sterilization choices. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! In this re-released episode, guest Rosalba Fontanez is challenging parents to love their children without expectation of grandchildren. As the mother of a childfree person herself (the host of this program!), she knows a little bit about the pressure to have kids and the toxicity of the mindset that grandparents are entitled to grandchildren. Rosalba offers sage advice and alternative options to parents who hassle their own kids for grandkids. Her overarching theme is that everyone has their own purpose and mission, and not everyone is meant to be a parent. But once people recognize that their own children's purpose and mission can include many other fulfilling possibilities, and isn't only limited to bearing more children, they then allow space for so much more. Rosalba reflects on her own experience as a grandmother to her stepson's kids, emphasizing that it is not necessary to have biological grandchildren to experience the joy of grandparenting. She encourages parents feeling victimized by their children not giving them grandchildren to focus on themselves, serve their communities, and be a grandparent figure to those who need it—including less-fortunate children and house pets. *** Support the show for as little as $3/month *** After listening to this episode, you'll have a better understanding of: - why the toxic mindset of entitlement to grandchildren needs to be abolished - how it's not necessary to have grandchildren to feel fulfilled or have unconditional love in your life, and instead consider volunteering or spending time with other children - that people who choose not to have children shouldn't feel pressured or victimized by others' expectations If you've ever been bingoed by your own parents (or grandparents) , you might want to share this episode with them. Because maybe hearing it from one of their own peers might help them understand why being childfree is so important to you. Theresa Gonzales is a childfree, third-generation Mexican-American, and the CEO and producer of the podcast Latinas from the Block to the Boardroom . And one of Theresa’s primary concerns is how tech, especially artificial intelligence, represents Latinas. Having worked for several major tech companies, Theresa is able to leverage her unique experience to expose the potential downsides of AI. And not to spoil the episode, but it’s not great. As a business coach and host of the Cafe Con Pam podcast, she has learned to stand in her power and will explain on this episode exactly what that means and what it took to get there. She also explains how embodying 2 separate countries and cultures gives her the necessary experience to help her clients build successful and sustainable businesses. In this episode, we deconstruct the common Spanish phrase " calladita se ve mas bonita, " which translates into the idea that quiet little girls are more beautiful. That one little phrase has managed to pack in a heavy dose of misogyny and stripped people of their own voices. Because when people feel like their voices bear no weight and they lack confidence in themselves, they're so easy to control. Controlling people, especially women, is what the patriarchy thrives on. And women like Pam and I are here to call bullshit on that belief and behavior and minimize its impact. As a childfree Latina, Pam points to how gender and societal norms (in both the US and Mexico) affect how she is perceived and how the bingos she hears give her real insight on to people's own projections of themselves. *** Support the show for as little as $3/month *** We also chat about coffee, dogs, and discuss whether or not moms are more productive than non-moms. La cultura prefiera que nos quedamos callados. It doesn't want us to put our own needs above those of other people. It wants us to shut up, be quiet, and do more for others than you do for yourself. And that's toxic. So let's bust out from that toxicity and BS! Here are 3 take-aways from this episode about self-care: it should be as routine as brushing your teeth it can be as simple as a morning cup of tea that you can do it in both small and big ways, like Simone Biles did in 2021 To get the full show notes, and an episode transcript, go to PauletteErato.com . It's (American) football season so here's a mini episode about why grown men slap each other's asses, smack helmets, and act like fools in the end zone—and why you should definitely be doing the same thing. In a word: confidence. You get it by celebrating every step in your progress towards a goal, no matter how tiny or incremental that progress might be. And football players know that. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Meet Talia Molé, a fascinating storyteller and healer, for whom storytelling is medicine. It's in the stories of ourselves that we find healing. And in doing so, Talia is able to subvert the idea of modern society by distancing from patriarchal structures while pursuing the story of our ancestors and centering new ideas around motherhood. And she'll tell you how, as an immigrant woman, she's "always in translation." In this episode we address the careless but all too frequent bingo posed in the question of feeling like "less of a woman," which leads to discussions around hysterectomies, Roe v. Wade , and the continued practice of forced births and forced sterilizations. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Meet Isabel, a firebrand and bold Latina voice promoting the modern childfree lifestyle. This episode was recorded on the day that Roe v. Wade was overturned, and though Isabel is from Colombia, she explains how the reverberations of this landmark decision affect childfree people around the world, and especially in Latin America. We didn't hide our frustrations during this conversation, and we also didn't shy away from delving into heavy topics like white supremacy, forced sterilization, and the dangers of pronatalism. But we also have hope for the impact that our own voices can have for other Latinas, and invite you to join this fight with us. More about Isabel: Isabel loves to create virtual and IRL activities that connect more childfree women from around the World. Whether co-hosting the Childfree Girls podcast or organizing trips with The Uprising Spark , Isabel is the childfree friend you always wanted but never knew you needed. Isabel is a co-founder of Nunca Madre: a Spanish-speaking community for childfree people in Latin America and Spain focused on raising awareness about choice and helping those undecided about having kids. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Why is not wanting to have kids such a big deal to some people? Isn't it totally normal for some people to not want them? Yes, it is normal to not want children. And since the first 14 episodes (or season 1) focused on the creative part of the childfree Latine experience, for these next 12 episodes (season 2) we're going to discuss the childfree part of the creative Latine experience. This is about representation. Childfree Latines are minorities within minorities. It’s not very accepted to be childfree in Latinoamerican cultures, and we’d really like to change that. Because yes, it is normal to not want children. And not wanting children does not equate to hating children. Let's normalize this idea and shift how childfree characters are portrayed in popular media. Do away with the stereotypes perpetuated by the likes of Cruella de Vil, Ursula, and Scar the Lion from Disney movies, which portray childfree characters as jealous, sadistic, and sinister. That's the idea we're feeding to actual children! Forget that Disney movies already have problematic themes. This is another level of yikes! This season will feature the voices of a host of mujeres fuertes, artists and storytellers painting portraits with stories of their own real world experiences. And how being childfree has afforded them the ability to craft their lives on their own terms. They've created life in different ways, nurturing and mothering people in diverse but no less impactful relationships than what we commonly refer to as "parents." After all, "its takes a village," doesn't it? This episode highlights the story of me, Paulette Erato, a childfree Latina woman. And poses the questions: is it actually a choice to be childfree? What if I was just born this way? Plus, what's the distinction between childless and childfree ? After this episode, the hope is you will better understand that: Not wanting kids isn’t weird or abnormal, it’s just different Childfree people aren’t the bitter, selfish, or even dangerous people the media makes them out to be, and that these stereotypes do more harm than good That being childfree is a measure of self-awareness, a boundary and limit we’re not willing to cross to please other people—and that is the peak of adulting DM me on Instagram if you have questions about this week's episode. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! What does showing up for yourself mean? In this mini bonus episode recorded live in my Facebook group , I talk about how it’s about sticking to the promises you make to yourself. It’s making a commitment to YOU. And how doing this in small ways consistently will prove to your brain that when you need to show up in big ways, it won’t have to worry about it. You’ve already given it the proof that you’re capable of it! 3 different ways I cover for how to show up for yourself: creating a schedule you can stick to setting and respecting your boundaries shaping your space to cater to your needs What does this look like in practice? Here are some examples from this episode: Let’s say you want to wake up at 5 am but typically get up at 7 am. Instead of forcing yourself up at 5 am right away and snoozing for two hours, start setting your alarm a little earlier each day so you can slowly work back to waking up earlier. Tell your partner what you need from them. If you’re the type of person who just needs to vent once in a while but you’re not looking for a fix right now, say so. If you’re on the receiving end, you can ask “are you looking for a solution or are you just looking to vent?” We’re conditioned to believe that our workspaces should be clean and tidy all the time. And sure, some people need clean and orderly workspaces, but not everyone thrives in this environment. Pick what works for you. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! **Please note that this episode includes spoilers!** Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ( available on Amazon Video ) is an excellent case study in self-sabotage. But did Midge Maisel's career destruction begin in Season 4 or did it start back in Season 3? Is she motivated by fear of failure or fear of success? The answers aren't so simple, but it's a great jumping off point to discuss how else self-sabotage plays out in our own lives. After this episode you'll be able to identify several different ways self-sabotage can occur for you, recognize how your own internal dialogue can make you susceptible to it, and how small changes in this communication system can help you overcome it. Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text! Journaling sounds boring, but can also bring up feelings of vulnerability. Because what if someone finds it and learns all your private thoughts? In this episode, I challenge you to reconsider the purpose of journaling and show you different ways of approaching it. This is the 21st century after all, you’re no longer limited to only pen and paper. Instead I’ll introduce you to a few different methods for getting the trash thoughts out of your head, and show you how this practice is similar to another elimination method you’re (hopefully) already pretty good at.
