Lucky 7 and Spot 11 were patient lesson horses, guiding riders with steady grace. But as the day wore on, patience had its limits—by the second lesson, the moment a student mounted Spot 11, he simply lay down. Most horses are patient… until they’re not.

In Birmingham, England, to honor her aunt’s passing, she was met by her 90-year-old uncle, who requested that she and her husband recite both the Mourner’s Kaddish and the Lord’s Prayer. Unprepared, they practiced at their Airbnb, relying on a pronunciation guide. She was impatient to begin, but when the moment came, she carefully and slowly recited the Kaddish, ending with ‘Amen.’ Her husband followed with the Lord’s Prayer. In the end, patience was present in the gathering of family and friends, holding space for love and remembrance.

While fly-fishing in the remote Eastern Sierra, it was just him, his neoprene waders, and a very stinky port-o-potty. When nature called, disaster struck—his keys slipped into the hole. With no choice but to wait, he patiently bided his time until another family arrived with more fishing tools, including a big spoon. Carefully and patiently, he ‘fished’ for his keys until he finally reeled them in—then spent far too much time scrubbing them clean in the river.

As a Colombian, he often faced misunderstandings—mistaken for Mexican or met with jokes about cocaine and Pablo Escobar instead of the country’s beautiful birds and rivers. Raised by a mother who instilled fear to keep him in line, he avoided drinking, smoking, or weed. But patience shaped his journey, and at 30, during his engagement party, he finally tried reefer for the first time—on his own terms.

When Jay and his wife riding their horses, got to a narrow bridge and his horse won't move, Linda wasn't quite that patient as the horse began to back up on this narrow path, at this moment Jay had to stop and really think about how scared the horse was. Flashback to himself as a child, when he was scared as a kid, sometimes he didn't always get support. So, he wanted to show his horse patience as they slowly moved across, because they believed in each other, which is what patience is all about.

In college, Patti and her roommate Sue had a playful rivalry, each prank requiring patience—like Patti waiting silently in Sue’s closet for two hours before scaring her, or Sue lying under Patti’s bed, patiently waiting for the perfect moment to reach out and grab her arm. Both proved that the best pranks come to those who wait.

At 19, she became a single mom. Seeking direction, she went to a cabin with her dad, who urged her to focus on her daughter. Restless, she moved to a commune in San Francisco, then left to pick apples in Oregon, leaving her daughter with friends. After hitching back, they hit the road again—this time to Washington. A wrong turn on an icy road sent their car tumbling down a mountain. Stuck, she prayed and made a promise to "the gods"—from that moment on, her daughter would always come first.

Back home in Philadelphia from college, his mom questioned his Kawasaki 50. “To replace my last bike,” he shrugged. When asked to pick up his sister, she refused—but her best friend hopped on instead. A few days later, his dad struck a deal: teach him to ride, and he’d get the family’s beautiful car for the weekend. Lesson complete, he and his friends took off to New Jersey. By the time they returned, his dad was in heaven—racing kids on mopeds like a pro.

In fall 2021, his parents passed within months of each other. Devout Catholics, they weren’t afraid—his mom went while cutting flowers she wasn’t supposed to, his dad slipped in slippers his sister Gibby gave him. After their passing, he took a long ride to the Geysers, trying to process his grief. When he crashed, he waited for help—only to be rescued by a father and son, the elder struggling with dementia. Back in Petaluma, battered but reflective, he saw it not as coincidence, but a sign from his parents.

At 19, he dropped out of college, left Chicago’s suburbs, and headed west with Mike, eventually landing in Happy Camp, California. A neighbor invited them to poker night, and despite sensing a setup, they went. Their host, Joseph, spoke of companionship and Jesus, while his wife, Ruth, sang softly as they played. Strangely, he and Mike won plenty of pennies. Long after leaving, he kept thinking about Ruth—maybe she was an angel.

At 16, she worked three jobs nonstop, but by senior year, she knew she had to leave. With her last $1,000, she bought a ticket to Australia—no plan, just a one-way flight. The moment the plane took off, she sobbed, realizing she had no idea what came next. In Sydney, still lost, she picked two strangers and followed them through buses and trains until they reached a youth hostel. From there, she found her footing—and spent the next year traveling.

Growing up on a dirt road with his brothers and a psycho dog named Wolf, life was unpredictable. One winter, Russ knocked over a snowman, his girlfriend screamed, and Wolf snapped. The damage was so bad they called the cops—but after 15 failed shots, it was Hal who fired the 16th. Despite their strife, he walked into his room and cried for hours.

After years of trips and dinners, he felt stuck. Then, while losing at Boggle, he had a realization. He looked up and said, “One of these days, I’ll beat you… I guess we’ll have to get married.” Thankfully, she didn’t make him hit the road first.

In 2021, Gabriella left New Jersey for Colorado with her parents in tow. Her mom’s fear of public bathrooms led to a deluxe portable toilet—used just two feet from the family after 16 grueling hours on the road. Stunned awake, Gabriella's father sighed, “Well, I’m never gonna fall asleep after that… might as well finish the trip.” And so, they did.

They say all exits look the same, but the real story is in the entrance. From Colorado to Oregon, from Ecuador to the peaks of the Andes, from Bali’s bamboo forests to the rolling hills of Ireland—he set out on countless roads with barely two pennies to his name, navigating the unknown with sheer curiosity. His father’s words, “My way or the highway,” and his mother’s reminder, “Remember who you are and make good choices,” echoed through his travels. Like Jack Kerouac, he sacrificed love and money to chase the road as both a storyteller and a seeker. In the end, The Highway is My Way.

His tale encompasses themes of maturity, empathy, and understanding. Josh shares a heartfelt story about his father, who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS). Mary recounts her quest to collect Disneyland map game pieces from soda bottles for a chance to visit the theme park. Jan remembers attending a James Brown concert in 1968 and feeling a sense of belonging as the music dissolved racial divides. Their stories transport us back to special moments lost in time.Chapters: Introduction Mary's Disneyland Map Game Story Mary's Storytelling Process Jan's James Brown Concert Story Jan's Comedy and Storytelling Background Conclusion Show Notes: This episode was recorded at a live show for West Side Stories in Petaluma, CA. Mary talks about collecting Disneyland map game pieces from soda bottles when she was 9 or 10 in hopes of winning a trip to Disneyland. The game pieces blew away before she could collect them all. Jan shares about attending a James Brown concert in Boston in 1968 when he was 18 years old. He recalls the electricity of seeing the legendary performer at his peak and feeling a sense of belonging despite being in the racial minority at the show. We learn about Mary and Jan's storytelling processes. Mary thinks through her stories while swimming and records drafts to time them. Jan writes and refines his stories sometimes creating visual storyboards. Jan provides background on his journey into stand-up comedy and storytelling, starting on the streets of Boston with his brother in the late 1970s, before heading to San Francisco as the comedy club scene exploded there. There are reflections on what made the original moments described so magical, as well as the challenge of keeping stories fresh and immediate during repeat tellings over the years. —- Dave Pokorny Presents… West Side Stories Petaluma’s StorySlam on the second Weds of each month at 417 Western Avenue Petaluma, CA 94952 at 7pm.
