We recorded this episode well over a year ago but we still think it's an important one to listen to. Friend of the show and contributor to "French All Around Us", Joseph Dunn was lucky enough to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron when he visited New Orleans. Of course Jesse and Joseph will talk about other things but this was a brilliant conversation we wanted to share. Jesse was excited to be interviewed by Radio Canada, in French, so for anyone who might be joining us from Québec for the first time, we wanted to re-release the first episode we every recorded in French. Click below to listen to Jesse's interview and to learn about this interview with Jean-Philippe L'Etoile. Interview with Radio-Canada - https://ici.radio-canada.ca/ohdio/balados/33/le-radiojournal/669515/radiojournal-du-21-novembre-8-h-00 We have discussed Jesse’s attempts to learn French many times on the podcast. However, for the first time ever, Jesse attempts to have an entire episode in French. Joining him is his friend Jean-Philippe L’Étoile, who he met through the podcast. As a warning, there will be many errors in grammar and vocabulary. Also, since Mike doesn’t speak French, things that would normally have been edited out have not been. But we did our best, and we think it is important to try to speak the language that is so important to us. We have discussed Jesse’s attempts to learn French many times on the podcast. This week we’re honored to have Daniel Quintanilla and Jessamine Irwin on our show. They are the filmmakers behind Le Carrefour (The Intersection). Jesse will talk to them about them about what inspired them to create this film and their backgrounds. If you listen to this show you’ll want to see this important documentary. Here’s the film’s description, “Cécile reconnects with the French of her childhood thanks to recently arrived Franco-African immigrants, like Tresor, seeking asylum in Cécile’s hometown of Lewiston, Maine. Cecile’s Franco roots tie her to the thousands of French-Canadians who came before her to power the local mills, and who suffered from decades of discrimination and oppression. As history repeats itself, Cécile and Trésor develop a close friendship that helps Cécile finally find her pride in being Franco-American.” Film’s Website https://lecarrefourfilm.com/ Support the Film - https://www.gofundme.com/f/2ukpv-film-fundraiser-le-carrefour Trailer - https://vimeo.com/567610579 Get an in-person ticket to see Le Carrefour - https://pointsnorthinstitute.org/films/the-intersection-le-carrefour/?parent=/ciff/films/?_ Get a virtual Ticket to see Le Carrefour - https://watch.eventive.org/camdeniff/play/61278ca1461d29002911f8fd/611a9cf1a26c240fba48e59d TV5Monde Maine Heritage Film Grant to ‘Le Carrefour’- https://frenchculture.org/film-tv-and-new-media/12930-tv5monde-maine-heritage-film-grant Documentary ‘Le Carrefour/The Intersection’ to premiere at Camden International Film Festival - Documentary 'Le Carrefour/The Intersection' to premiere at Camden International Film Festival (bangordailynews.com) Documentary film connects two French cultures: Le Carrefour-The Intersection - http://francoamerican.bdnblogs.com/2021/07/22/franco-american-news-and-culture/documentary-film-connects-two-french-cultures-le-carrefour-the-intersection Don’t forget to check out our Patreon for extra bonus content and a way to support the show - https://www.patreon.com/fclpodcast You can get your own FCL Face Mask, check out our merch on Teespring – https://www.teespring.com/fclpodcast

We first met Daniel Moreau at the Rassemblement in Orono, Maine. He was a fresh-faced kid who just got his training wheels off and was talking about a very big project he was working on. That project is now completed and it’s just as amazing as we hoped it’d be. Dawson: A Story of a New England Mill City, is a ten part series on YouTube and we’re happy to discuss it with Daniel. We also invite people to send us video testimonials talking about what his work has meant to them, which we will collect to be part of a video montage screened during the celebration. Last summer Jesse noticed an essay that was being shared around social media titled, "Where do we fit? Too American to be French-Canadian, and too French-Canadian to be American" Seconds after finishing it he knew we had to have the author on the show and we are honored she'd come on and tell her story. Caroline Castonguay shares with us her experience and the process of writing this amazing essay. If you haven't read the essay we can't recommend it enough. We hope you enjoy this episode. Next week’s episode is going to be a fun one for a couple of reasons. It’ll be the first time we’ll have two guests and so it’d only make sense to have two hosts. Jesse will share hosting duties with Mike and they’ll welcome Tonya and Ray Shevenell to the show. Tonya is the director of the documentary The Home Road and Ray, her father, is the self-described “Star”. The short description of The Home Road is, A 74-year-old Maine man retraces the journey of his pioneering, 19-year-old great-great-grandfather, who left his home in Canada in 1845. Join us next week as we talked to Tonya and Ray all about this amazing film and how the story still resonates today. Tonya has recently made The Home Road free to watch online. So please visit the links below where you can also order the DVD. The Home Road Website - https://www.thehomeroad.com/ Watch The Home Road Online - https://www.thehomeroad.com/see-the-film

This week’s episode is a little different but we hope you’ll come along for the ride. Two weeks ago we attended the fourth annual NH PoutineFest in Merrimack, NH. We interviewed a lot of people, restaurants and venders that were there and put it all together in our first wrap up episode. Tim Beaulieu, Event Organizer of NH PoutineFest, was nice enough to chat with us about the successful event. We were also lucky enough to sit down with Doris Proulx who was named Franco-American of the Year at the event. We want to thank everyone that took the time to talk to us and everyone that visited our table at the event. It’s great to hear that people are enjoying the show. Just a note about the audio in this episode, it was my first time using portable audio equipment, so the levels aren’t as high as the interview with Tim. I hope this doesn’t distract anyone from listening to the interviews because there are a lot of great stories being shared. I’m still learning and I thank everyone for bearing with us. I also want to thank my friend Adam Bargmeyer who was super kind and mailed us portable audio equipment that made all these great interviews possible. Without his generosity this episode wouldn’t have been possible.
