Cathy Marston and Steven Goulstone, the hosts of the Changes Ahead Podcast, a Baptist New Zealand podcast hosting conversations that discuss the changes the church needs to think about if it is to have a meaningful presence in the future. We talk about the unheard voices of our church communities, the desire to be faithful by keeping things the same, when perhaps faithfulness demands change, hearing people's stories rather than discussing theology abstractly, and why the church might be worth changing to save. Sharon 'Rocky' Roggio has spent years in the film and television industry, working in a variety of roles on many well known shows (e.g. House of Cards, Parks and Recreation) and films. In this conversation we discuss her directorial debut film, '1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture'. The film has won over 25 awards at film festivals around the world. The film documents the first time the word homosexual was included in a Bible translation (as recently as 1946), the subsequent decision by that same committee to take the word out again in their next revision, looking at how and why the committee came to those decisions. The film features personal stories of the key characters which makes it compelling to watch. Rocky and I discuss her career, why and how the film came about, why she included a storyline of her own journey with her dad, who believes very differently to her, and what she is hoping for as people watch this film. Spoiler alert, we obviously discuss elements of the film in the episode, so if you want to see the film before listening, head to 1946themovie.com Find more from Rocky and the team on Facebook , Instagram , Twitter , or TikTok ___ Connect with me at downtoearthconversations.com or at: Facebook: facebook.com/downtoearth.conversations Instagram: @downtoearth.conversations Email: downtoearth.conversations@gmail.com Music by Strahan: Spotify: Strahan Facebook: facebook.com/StrahanMusic or facebook.com/commonerscommunion Instagram: @strahanmusic or @commoners_communion

Jaimee van Gemerden holds a PhD in theology but, unlike some academics, is great at connecting deep thought about God with real issues in and around the Christian faith in a way that the average person can connect with. With her friend Andrew, she is the founder of Metanoia, a platform for hosting conversations about faith in public spaces that might otherwise be held behind closed doors, if they are had at all. We talk about how deliberately bringing her understandings and experiences as a woman into her theology has helped her see different angles on things, what Metanoia is and how it came about, the church's response, or lack of it, to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into abuse in care report that came out last year, and the idea that we aren't supposed to empty ourselves of who we are as Christians, but in fact to embrace all of who we are in partnership with God to live our fullest lives. We talk about what the church might need to be saved from, and indeed, whether it should be saved at all. Dallas Harema is a social worker, counsellor, coach, husband, father, and so much more. My observation, having known Dallas for a while now, is that he has a really good grasp on what it means to love people well, in a way that gets through the clutter to make real connections. We talk about how being Māori influences how he sees relationships, we talk about breaking down barriers for men to be vulnerable, for couples to connect better, the current political climate around Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Treaty of Waitangi, and the need for us all to be better acquainted with our emotions. As I release this, today marks one full year since the atrocities committed by Hamas in Israel, and the beginning of a horrendous campaign of genocide that Israel began in Gaza as a result. Violence that has, in the past week or so, spread into surrounding territories as the western world sits back and watches. Today's guest, Cole, is a visual journalist, capturing stories through photos and videos. While many of us were simply getting on with our lives, Cole left the safety of Aotearoa New Zealand for the land of Palestine, spending two months in and around the West Bank. Cole shares stories of the people he met, the resilience he saw, and the oppression that they face in everyday life. What Cole describes is both heart-warming and heart breaking. It gives some understanding as to why things exploded a year ago, and why this so far from Israel simply defending itself. Cole tells the stories of humans who are trying to keep their humanity and dignity in an environment that is dehumanising and oppressive. He also challenges us about what we are doing to help give hope to those for whom life has become quite hopeless. This is one of the most important conversations I feel like I've ever had on this podcast. And that is no slight on all the amazing conversation partners I've had so far. But this one just has a weight to it. For that reason, wanting to do this conversation some justice, I didn't stop us to fit my usual timings, and so this episode is much longer than my others. It felt like it needed to be. Feel free to listen in smaller chunks as you are able. Cole and I specifically discuss some of the stories behind some of his photographs and videos, so you may want to go check them out on his Instagram page before listening. Episode 100 is here! As I was thinking about what to do for this episode, I thought, why not interview someone who has featured more on the podcast than anyone else, yet who hasn't actually been a guest on the podcast? Every episode since episode 21, Strahan Coleman's music has been there. And in this kōrero with Strahan we go deep, talking about the journey that led to him being an award winning musician who travelled the world, but then the way life all came crashing down, pulling his music career out from under him and changing everything about his life and his future. In that time of deep pain, Strahan began to learn a new way of seeing God, a new way of praying, a new way of being. We talk about the mountains and the valleys, the joys and the struggles, the unlearning, and the embodying of faith. We talk about unanswered prayers, undiagnosable conditions, and what it might mean that God is good, especially in those times when it doesn't seem to be true. It is a conversation that is filled with life and hope. Scott Gilmour is the chair and founder of the I Have A Dream Trust. I Have a Dream is an organisation working to support children through building relationships that span years. It is a programme that, as you will hear, was a long time in the making for Scott, but he followed his intuition, used the resources he had, and now supports over 20 workers, or navigators as they call them, who are supporting students across 5 schools, from the day they start school until they are 20. Scott comes from a business and technology background, so we talk a bit about that. We also talk about his involvement in Angel Investing - something that was new to me that I think is brilliant. Aaron is still fighting with and for our rangatahi (youth) but has left the larger, more generic services he worked for and, with his wife Summer, started Kick Back - an organisation dedicated to supporting some of our most vulnerable young people - particularly those experiencing homelessness. We talk about the journey of starting something new, how it fills a void in the existing services, and how it will help the youth of Tāmaki (Auckland) moving forward. I have released this episode out of my usual rhythm because the day of release is a significant day in Aotearoa New Zealand. On this day, July 24, 2024, the Royal Commission of inquiry into Abuse in State and Faith-based Care released their final report. This report, which took six years to compile, details the abuse of thousands of New Zealand children and other vulnerable people while in the care of the state or faith based organisations. The report estimates that between 1950 and 1999, over 200,000 people suffered abuse while in the care of these organisations. Ken Clearwater, is himself a survivor of sexual abuse, and has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his 30 years of supporting other male survivors of abuse, and advocating for legislative change. He was one of those who regularly called for the government to launch a royal commission of inquiry, and we talk both about Ken's own journey, and the inquiry itself. He has spoken at the United Nations about the work he is involved in in Aotearoa. Obviously there are things in this conversation that may be challenging to listen to, including mention of rape, sexual assault, and suicide. Please take care of yourself and stop listening or take breaks if you need to. Please use your own support structures, and make use of the links in the show notes to seek help if you need to. While there are some hard truths in this episode, it is ultimately an episode of hope. It is a conversation with a man who has grown something powerful from the evils he was put through. It is the story of how men have supported other men, and how goodness can thrive, even in the face of great evil. Find Ken's Ted Talk here. Daughter-father combo, Jemma and Shane Clifton, have both gone through large life transitions, Jemma's around gender, and Shane's around disability. Both have been long processes of change, and they have been a support for one another in their transitional journeys. Jemma and Shane run a podcast called the Change podcast, which follows Jemma's gender affirmation transition, as she embraces who she is as a transgender woman. It is available on all podcasting platforms, and was the catalyst for my inviting them into conversation. We talk about their podcast, why they chose to take this journey public, and what sort of feedback they are getting. Chris Clarke is the CEO of the Wilberforce Foundation, having previously worked in leadership in the health sector, followed by leading World Vision NZ. Chris and I begin by talking about his own journey, through business, into the health sector, and then into the world of non-profits, including his time with World Vision NZ. We talk about why he got into that work, and what he learned from those times. We then discuss the study the Wilberforce Foundation commissioned into faith and belief in Aotearoa, New Zealand. We talk about some of the interesting results from the survey, and what they are telling the church about who we are and who we could be. There are some encouraging things, some very troubling things, and some things that should make the church sit up and notice, realising that change simply has to happen if the church is going to have anything to say to people in this country into the future. Bridie also shares about her own mental health journey, how that has helped her in her role, and what she has learned along the way. Caz and Em are the hosts of the fantastic podcast, the Bloody Bible. Outside of the podcast they are Dr Carolyn Blyth and Dr Emily Colgan - academics in the world of theology who have found ways to share their research so that it is digestible for the general public. On the Bloody Bible, Caz and Em explore some of the more violent passages in the Bible, linking them to modern true crimes, and behaviours and attitudes that are still in play today. They also help us see the stories from the perspective of the victims, something the Bible itself doesn't necessarily do for us. We talk about how they became interested in these kind of topics, why they started the podcast, and what they've learned from linking these stories to modern day true crime. We talk about power and control, patriarchy, feminism, how to read the bible well, seeing things from the perspective of others, and the harmful ways that biblical texts are used to justify heinous behaviour A warning that we do talk about a range of violent crimes such as gender based violence, including rape, and murder, so if you find those subjects hard please look after yourself, and feel free to skip this episode, or see the list of support services below. Ruth Schmidt (she/her) is a pastor pursuing ordination with the United Church of Christ in the USA. She was also a senior director at Fuller Theological Seminary, California, until she was fired in January 2024 for refusing to sign Fuller's statement of beliefs. Just two weeks after she was fired for standing up for what she believed in, we recorded this conversation. In the weeks afterwards Ruth publicly shared, in what I thought was a respectful and hopeful way, looking to stand against the injustices she saw and invite decision makers into conversation. We talk about what happened and why. We talk about Ruth's feelings throughout this, her hopes for the situation, and the courage she has seen rise up in others. We also discuss the ripple effect this all had for students and staff at Fuller, and what happened as a result in those first two weeks. You may not know of Fuller, but this conversation goes to something much bigger than this one institution. It's about justice. It's about coercive power. It's about listening to those who are different from you. Sophie Fasi-Mohenoa is part of a small but growing group called Christians for Peace in Palestine Aotearoa that has arisen in the midst of the Israeli war on Gaza. Our conversation is grounded in her time living in the West Bank, working with Messianic Jews and Palestinian Christians looking to drive peace in the region. We talk about how Christians for Peace Aotearoa came about, what they are involved in and are hoping to achieve, what she learned from her time living in Israel/Palestine, her experience as a foreigner in an occupied land, the hope that she found there, and what we can do from the other side of the world. It's a conversation that is very timely, and gives us much food for thought and action. It's a busy, crazy time of year for many but it's also a time that can be really hard for those already doing it tough. For those living on the streets or those who have accommodation but can't afford the necessities of life, without support life simply isn't manageable, especially in a season where they are often forgotten. Orange Sky is an organisation based out of Australia that, through a huge number of volunteers around Australia and New Zealand, offer a free service to allow people doing it tough to wash and dry their clothing, and have a safe, hot shower at the same time. They have vans kitted out to allow a portable service to visit different locations on different days. Brodie and Raina are two of Orange Sky's volunteers, based here in Ōtautahi, Christchurch. So on a very wet and miserable day I went to meet with them at their Christchurch base in the Kairos Food Rescue warehouse. You may hear the rain on the warehouse roof come and go through the episode, but that just serves to remind us how important it is that Orange Sky exist. We talk about what Orange Sky is and how they both came to be involved. We talk about the types of people who use the services on offer and the difference it makes to them, and we talk about what Brodie and Raina have learnt from volunteering for Orange Sky. Julia Grace talked to us last time about her journey with mental health, the work she was doing speaking into that space, and her recognition that there isn't a line separating well and unwell, but that we're all on a continuum of mental health. It's a profound and fun kōrero and definitely worth a listen. Julia joins me on Catching Up With to talk about how the journey of speaking in the mental health space is going, her recent appointment as president of the Professional Speakers Association of New Zealand, and most excitingly, her upcoming book, Be Kind to Your Mind. Steff Fenton (they/them) is a trans Christian speaker, writer, educator, and advocate who publicly shares the intersections of queerness and faith. Steff is passionate about creating safe spiritual spaces for LGBTIQA+ people and helping others cultivate a more equitable and expansive faith. I asked Steff on the podcast because they get in the way of all the prejudice I was taught in the faith culture I grew up in. Steff is transgender and is not only Christian, but has co-founded and co-pastored a church, has a Masters of Divinity, and lets their faith shape their way of being in the world. Steff is an amazingly loving human being who longs to see everyone embraced for who they are. In this conversation Steff and I talk about their contrasting experiences of coming out within a church context, firstly around sexuality, and later around gender, and how those experiences highlight what the church often is and what it can be. We talk about exclusion and embrace and the effects those have on people. And we talk about the ways in which embracing those who are different from us, and particularly hearing the transgender voice, can give us a fuller and more beautiful picture of God. Lisa Maathuis is the General Manager of Dignity - an organisation whose mission is to make period products accessible to everyone who needs them, so no one misses out on work, education, sport, or anything else in life. You may have never thought about that, but the more I've learned about period poverty and period equity, the more I have realised this needs to be something that we are talking about more openly so we can fix the issues together. I talk with Lisa about what period poverty is, and why it is such a hidden problem. We talk about reducing stigma, and empowering people to thrive in life without the barriers some face in this area. Sarah Page is the founder and Executive Director of the Kindness Collective Foundation. When events in life led her to see the inequalities of life clearly for the first time Sarah knew it was time to do something about it. So she started by getting friends to donate things for those she was connected to who were in need. Ten years on and the Kindness Collective is a thriving network of thousands of ordinary New Zealanders who are getting alongside those in need, and they are partnered with some of New Zealand's biggest and most well known companies to bring love, and joy, and peace, and hope to people around the country through acts of kindness. We talk about Sarah's journey of realising what life was like for others, what she decided to do about that, and the effect that performing these acts of kindness had on her own challenging journey with mental health. We hear the very tiniest tip of the iceberg of the stories that come Sarah's way on a daily basis and why this has become a lifelong passion for her. We talk about how broken our systems are that mean the Kindness Collective even has to exist, but the huge difference they are making because they do. And we touch on this word kindness and about how deep and gritty kindness really is. Liz Cooledge Jenkins and I follow each other on Instagram, and neither of us remember how she and I connected, but when she let me know about a book she has coming out this December I had to get her on the podcast. The book is called Nice Churchy Patriarchy, and is a combination of Liz's experiences in, and working for, various American evangelical churches, and her deep thinking and research around the attitudes and impacts of patriarchy, even in those spaces that claim to see all people as equals. We discuss Liz's experiences as a woman in church spaces and the impact of ingrained patriarchy on women, we talk about how her exploration of patriarchy goes hand in hand with her growing understanding of the many other minority groups within the western church and how the church has treated them, and we talk about how it's actually people's ability to live into the fullness of their humanity that is at stake. Recently I was privileged, along with former guest Michael Frost, to be on a panel at a workshop about rethinking our beliefs regarding sexuality and gender. The main speaker that day was Amanda Pilbrow from Already Enough, and we took the opportunity to sit down together afterwards to debrief the day. It doesn't matter if you weren't there. We give a brief overview of what was covered in the workshop, and people's reactions to them. We discuss the idea of questions about faith as holy invitations, even if we've been taught that they are signs of unfaithfulness. Amanda reminds us to listen to those for whom this is lived experience, rather than treating this as theological theory. And we acknowledge the courage it takes to step into this journey when so much can be at stake. If you want to hear more of Amanda's story, head to episode 79 of Michael Frost's podcast 'In the Shift' on Apple or Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Bethel Church is a charismatic evangelical church in Redding, California. It is famous for the church music it pumps out prolifically, and it has a Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry which hosts over 2,000 students annually from over 60 countries. Mike Maeshiro worked for Bethel coordinating events (which they do on a huge scale and frequency), travelled the world preaching, and was a teacher of spiritual discernment at the School of Supernatural Ministry until coming out as gay just a couple of years ago. Since then life has changed dramatically for Mike, losing his role, his income, many friends, but gaining a whole lot too. Mike shares about that journey in the episode. We talk about how it was actually Mike's relationship with God, not his abandonment of faith, that led to his coming out. We also discuss the way he's been treated by those who are supposed to be God's examples of love to the world, and how he now uses the platforms he built while at Bethel to support others who are wrestling with faith and sexuality, or who are simply asking questions about the faith they've been handed. We talk about Little Joys and how it came that an 18 year old is already several years in to running her own business. This is a kōrero that includes Amelie inviting us into her life with OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Nick Allwright is a funeral director. It is his job to walk alongside grieving family members and friends as they deal with the loss of their loved one. As we will hear from Nick, sometimes this is a glorious time, and sometimes it is anything but. Sometimes it is a celebration, and sometimes it is a symbol of all that is wrong with the world. Nick shares about how he got into this profession, what is involved in his role, how he interacts with families, how he looks after himself when dealing with death every day, what he loves about the role, and what makes it sometimes a very difficult job to do. While Nick deals with death, his job is very much about the living, helping them through what can be a very tough time in their lives, doing whatever he can to let them get on with their grieving without having to stress about details that he can take care of. Please note that, as we are talking about death, there may be triggering aspects of this korero, so please hit pause and have a breather if you need to, and access the relevant support networks if something comes up for you. You will hear in Nick's voice that this is, at times, a very emotional conversation. Cathy and Steven of The Changes Ahead take over the episode putting me in the hot seat. This interview originally appeared on The Changes Ahead podcast back in March. We talk about creativity, being right, being just, and the shifting of our faith as we grow. If you enjoy this check out the many other fantastic conversations on The Changes Ahead - here's how they describe the heart of their podcast: "It is no secret that the church in the West is in decline and there seems to have been unending talk about the church needing to change. Despite this, the number of sustainable alternatives or even smaller changes to what most would be familiar with as church is tragically low. This podcast is capturing thoughts of people who can see the Changes Ahead of us. Together we’ll be challenged, provoked even, by the views of people who are thinking about how the church might thrive going forward. This is a very special episode as we prepare to remember the crown invasion of Parihaka on November 5th, 1881. If you don't know the story of Parihaka, you may wish to pause the episode and follow the links below to read a little about what happened. But the short of it was that the Crown ordered troops to invade Parihaka in response to the people of Parihaka showing active non-violent resistance to the confiscation of their lands, and the response of the people of Parihaka was kindness and intentional non-violence. Today's guest, Puna Wano-Bryant, is from Parihaka, and a couple of years ago led the team who engaged with the Crown to negotiate a Crown apology for the atrocities committed in its name. With a background in law and arts, Puna has been actively pursuing justice for Māori in a range of ways for many years. Mohamed has also worked in television and radio journalism in New Zealand and abroad over the last decade, and has produced some quality podcast series for Radio New Zealand. Most recently he is the author of the recently released, "How to Be a Bad Muslim, and other Essays". We talk about the power of words and storytelling. We hear about some of his experiences as a journalist, including time covering the Middle East including the Palestinian/Israel conflict, and his reporting on the 2019 Christchurch terror attacks, when he was connected in so many ways to so many of the victims from the mosques. We talk about Mohamed's book which covers themes of xenophobia, islamophobia, whānau, love, and loss. We also hear about why it was important to Mohamed to share about his mental health journey in a number of his book's essays. Dr Amy Kenny is an amazing human being who has recently released a book titled "My Body is Not a Prayer Request: Disability Justice in the Church." In the book, and in our conversation, Amy shares her experiences of living in a world that is not designed with disability in mind. Sadly, her experience is that it is actually worse in the church than elsewhere. We talk about her role teaching Shakespeare, her book and how it came about, and we tackle issues such as using disability as a metaphor, healing culture, whether she will run in heaven, whether hitting her other knee with a hammer would be helpful (?), how the church can be less ableist, and the difference she sees between inclusion and belonging. If you are moved by the episode please consider sharing it with someone else - let's get this message out there. This being my birthday, I decided to give you a bit of me as a gift from me to you. So I invited the incredible Tash McGill to take over the episode and put me in the hot seat, taking it wherever she wanted to take it. And she does just that. Tash is a broadcaster, podcaster, creative, storyteller, writer, and strategist. She works in business transformation, especially within the food, beverage and hospitality industries. She is chairperson of the New Zealand Whisky association and has recently been named a finalist in the Spirits Communicator category of the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition. On top of all of that, she hosts a podcast called The Transformationist, talking to people who are transforming the spaces they occupy - so definitely check that out. We talk about creating yourself rather than finding yourself, about changing our minds on theology and life, baggy jeans and oversized football jerseys, being a white male in a world of white male privilege and we explore how and why my new book came about. I spend a lot of time talking to people doing amazing things in the world. But today we get to hear about being, noticing, listening, and knowing our worth outside of what we do. Donald Scott is a former shearer and pastor, and is now a spiritual director. He has been on a journey of learning to be, for many years. And he takes us on that journey with him today. It's deeply beautiful and deeply challenging. We talk about his passion of ornithology (birds), his relatively recent embrace of lengthy silent retreats, how te āo Māori (the Māori world) has influenced his understanding of nature and spirituality, and about hearing the sound that lies underneath the loudness and the busyness. ___ Connect with me at downtoearthconversations.com or at Facebook: facebook.com/downtoearth.conversations Instagram: @downtoearth.conversations Email: downtoearth.conversations@gmail.com Music by Strahan: Spotify: Strahan Facebook: facebook.com/StrahanMusic or facebook.com/commonerscommunion Instagram: @strahanmusic or @commoners_communion

Hannah worked in HR until the birth of her first child triggered a manic episode and life changed forever. How did her newly acquired bipolar disorder lead to the development of her business, The Kite Programme? Why kites? And how does an app help anyone? Sel Leigh runs Leigh Development where she gets alongside people wanting to make an impact in the world through business and helps them to achieve that goal. But if I said this was a conversation about business coaching and mentoring I would be doing Sel a huge disservice. Because what Sel is doing goes so much deeper than that. We talk about diversity and inclusion, the effects of colonisation even on the way we do business, and about how Sel gets alongside people, encouraging them into and supporting them along their own decolonisation journey. If you've spent any amount of time in Christchurch you might well have heard of, or even been to, the Addington Coffee Co-op. A café in Addington, Christchurch, that has developed a great reputation as a café, and also as a business doing good. So it was there I headed this week to talk to one of the founders, and one of the overseers of the café and it's ever growing associated entities, Age Palmer. Age has been involved in the café since it was just an idea, and has been integral to the whole journey, along with an ever changing team of amazing people who keep the kaupapa, the heart of the place, alive. Age and I found a quiet place in an office at Addington Coffee and talked about how it all started, what the journey has been like, balancing business with a desire for justice and making a difference, and how the business and it's connected entities have grown and been reshaped. Carey Thomas is a teacher who has an interest in helping change the education system to reflect our bicultural nature as a country. She has recently finished a Masters Thesis looking at what it means to be a Pākehā engaging with te āo Māori (the world of Māori) and what are the barriers that get in the way of that. She particularly looked at past moments in her own life where she felt a resistance to engage and explored why that was. We discuss Carey's passion for kids, for teaching, and for change. We talk about the failings of the education system in providing for all kids, and what are some of the things that are stopping us from moving ahead well. What talk about the term Pākehā and the misconceptions around it. Some te reo Māori, or Māori language terms Dietrich uses include te āo Māori, meaning the Māori world or way of engaging with the world; rangatahi - young person; tamariki - children; pēpi - baby; and mana, which Dietrich uses in a way that loosely means worth or value as a person. Look out for the challenge he leaves for us at the end of the kōrero. James Harris is passionate about people and has given his life to helping those less privileged than himself. This has led him around the world to a number of places that many of us would never dream of going. We talk about his passion for youth work, justice, and doing good in the world, and hear how this has been outworked while living and working in Nauru with those in Australian detention centres, influencing the Prime Minister of New Zealand while working for World Vision NZ, and now serving youth in the outback of the land we now call Australia. Naomi Nicholas works for Karuwhā Trust. She is part of helping facilitate learning and understanding about Te Tiriti o Waitangi, a.k.a. the Treaty of Waitangi, particularly amongst non-Māori. For those of you overseas and unfamiliar with it, Te Tiriti is the treaty that was signed between the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand, and the British Crown in 1840. It is also a treaty that was then repeatedly breached by the colonisers, resulting in much pain and loss for Māori. Yet, understood well it is a great platform from which to work towards reconciliation and even justice. Naomi shares about what she does in her role, what she notices about the revelations people have on their journeys, how non-Maori can appropriately learn the true history of this nation without simply consuming and taking all over again, and what hope she sees for the future of this country. To read more about Parihaka Pā or to watch The Children of Parihaka documentary, head to https://nzhistory.govt.nz/occupation-pacifist-settlement-at-parihaka There are a few Māori terms in the episode today - I've tried to capture them below with basic translations (with the help of maoridictionary.co.nz). Shane Claiborne is such a beautiful human being and it was a privilege to speak to him. As you will hear in the conversation he has his finger in many interlinking pies. Shane is just so humble and relatable - just an ordinary guy - yet he has learned that his life can make a difference and has given himself to that. Some of you will have listened to episode 17 with Caz Tod-Pearson from the Simple way. Shane is one of the founders of the Simple Way and is still part of that community in Philadelphia. We don't go into this so much because there is so much else to talk about but if you want to hear more about that go back and listen to that chat with Caz. We cover his time with Mother Teresa, his activism and civil disobedience, his pacifism, including his time in Iraq during the war, and his fight against gun violence and the electric chair. I am so excited to bring to you a conversation with my mum and dad, Les and Alan Dickson. Having this kōrero with them was very moving for me, but also was a huge reminder that they are a really big part of why I value what I value. Their commitment to people and love for all is clear throughout the discussion. And while they see themselves as nothing special, they are involved in so much goodness in the world I feel we only just scratched the surface. We talk about disability support, budget advice, food parcels, offering extra help to those who need it, journeying with people struggling with physical or mental health, and, importantly what they have learnt about themselves through their journey. Hannah Sheath is a paramedic. We talk about what the job entails, what keeps Hannah doing it, what brings her joy in the midst of all the hurt, some lighter, more humorous moments in her career, and her empathy towards her patients through having had her own trauma through her pregnancies. We cover the Christchurch earthquakes and Mosque shootings, and Whakaari (white Island) eruption as well and how she was involved in those situations. Maybe it's the seriousness of the job but I don't think I've laughed this much ever while recording an episode. In saying that, due to the nature of her paramedic role we do discuss trauma of various kinds that may be triggering for some people - no details, just generic conversations - but if you need to stop listening and take a breath, please look after yourself. This also applies as we get to discussing Hannah's traumatic pregnancies near the end too. Lisa Mead, from Social Currency, fits perfectly with the kaupapa of this podcast. She is someone who has looked at the skills and passions she has, and then taken them and used them to make a difference in the world. Not by leaving her accounting profession, but by utilising it to create change for those young people who are deemed 'at risk'. We talk about why she does what she does, what it was like to leave a stable well paying job to risk it all for these at risk kids, and how she goes about creating change for young people through accounting. This is the second part of a two part kōrero, so go have a listen to that one before heading into this one. In pt. 1 we talked about what led Manny to this combination of theology, hope and disability; about the use of language and what it says about underlying assumptions regarding disability; and we even tackle church healing culture as he has experienced it in his life - does God heal? Why isn't he healing? What does church healing culture say to people like Manny? In this episode we ask, did God make a mistake when he made people with disabilities? We look at the social view of disability - what is it that really disables someone? And we look at inclusive spaces - the physical and attitudinal barriers to inclusion for people with disabilities. --- Connect with me at downtoearthconversations.com or at: Facebook: facebook.com/downtoearth.conversations Instagram: @downtoearth.conversations Email: downtoearth.conversations@gmail.com
