Settle this great truth in your heart—that no trouble happens to the Church but by the permission of the Church's God; and he permits nothing out of which he will not ultimately bring much good to his people. We may derive comfort from reflections on the permitting will, as well as on the commanding will of God. John Flavel, Puritan pastor and author who lived in the second half of the 1600s, in his book, “A Treatise on Keeping the Heart,” highlights several seasons or events in a person’s life that calls for an exertion of more than ordinary diligence to keep the heart. You and I are living in such a season this. BUT, you can mark this down RIGHT NOW- the church may be down, it may be in a time of chastening from God Almighty for its infatuation with money, world power, sensuality, and open public debauchery, BUT- in the end- the Church of Jesus Christ is going to rise up in power and success, as Flavel points out. We have God’s promise and guarantee on it.
