Asher’s expertise in improvisation across multiple genres has led him to a career as a soloist in demand, performing at venues such as Madison Square Garden, Hammerstein Hall, Lincoln Center, the Jacob Javitz Center and across four continents. Refusing to accept conventional advice he found a way to heal, building his strength to an unprecedented level. He used this experience as fuel to reinvent his live concerts as a high-energy contemporary violinist. In only a few months, Asher learned to merge, popular tunes and breakdancing choreography into his performances. Asher also uniquely performs as a DJ violinist bringing his experience as a live performer and technical prowess as an audio editing and mixing guru to countless clubs and stages. Send us a text Katie Dahl is a songwriter and playwright whose work is as expansive as Lake Michigan and as deeply rooted as its rocky coastal bluffs. A small-town celebrity on the Wisconsin peninsula where her family has lived for 175 years, she is now a radio-charting folk artist who tours around the world. Clear-eyed and tough-minded, fresh and funny, Katie “delivers razor-sharp lyrics with a hearty, soulful voice” ( American Songwriter ). Katie’s four albums of original songs showcase her creamy alto and trademark wit, as well as her unflinching authenticity. Her recent work finds her exploring more vulnerable territory than ever before, from anxiety to body image to the challenges of growing up queer in an evangelical church. Richly steeped in the American songwriting tradition, Katie navigates the muddy waters between the personal, public, and political with tenderness and dexterity. Katie is currently working with renowned producer Julie Wolf on a new album slated for release in early 2023. Her previous album, Wildwood , was produced by JT Nero (Birds of Chicago) and features Allison Russell; that record’s “Worry My Friend” hit #6 on the folk radio charts in 2019. Her song “Crowns” spent a month at #1 on the charts in 2015. Katie is also a playwright; her latest musical The Fisherman’s Daughters (2021) tells the story of two sisters in 1908 who fight the state of Wisconsin’s efforts to take their rural homestead via eminent domain to make a state park. Victory Farm (2012; co-written with James Valcq and Emilie Coulson) is a fictionalized account of the real-life German POWs who came to Wisconsin to pick cherries during World War II. Both plays were made into live cast recordings. Katie was a college freshman in Minnesota when she slipped on a patch of sidewalk ice and broke her wrist. Suddenly unable to play the oboe in her college orchestra, Katie used her newfound free time to learn guitar, teaching herself chord shapes as she strummed the strings with her stiff right hand. Send us a text Peter Ciesla is a self-taught textile artist born in Wroclaw, Poland in 1961. Growing up surrounded by theater, visual art and music, he developed a love for textiles and fashion. Peter started experimenting with textiles at age 11 designing and creating street fashion, as well as costume for theatre and dance performances. He emigrated to the United States in 1991 and immediately focused on developing a career as an artist/designer opening “Creative Apparel Design” in Chicago, Illinois. He spent the 1990’s focusing on custom couture work, learning the painstaking attention to detail that this work requires. In addition he developed an art-to-wear clothing and jewelry line during this time, as the Millennium approached. The present incarnation of his business, Bazyli Studio , was launched in 2002. Peter based it in Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin together with his life partner and artist, Skye. They combined their talents and efforts to create their unique, one-of-a-kind, sculptural beaded jewelry line. Their work has national recognition and has won numerous awards. Although Peter continued to design art-to-wear in the 2000’s, most of his energy went into hand crafting Bazyli jewelry. In 2012, he went back to his first passion and began designing and creating art clothing on a full time basis. In 2015, Peter and Skye opened Bazyli Studio Wearable Art Gallery in a building adjacent to their home and studios. Peter’s work has always been inspired by the natural world. He has most recently developed an art clothing line integrating his own toxin free, one-of-a-kind, plant-dyed organic textiles. He works with the natural fibers of linen, cotton, silk, hemp, wool, organic when possible. He experiments with local Door County plants, nuts, berries and flowers in his natural dyeing processes. He does botanical printing along with Shibori techniques. He uses his masterful skills to manipulate textiles in a variety of ways, including surface design, texturing, application, quilting and felting techniques. He also creates his own patterns for his signature coats, jackets and vests. In developing his own plant-dyed textiles he has realized his long time dream of creating clothing with a softer ecological footprint. His deep love, appreciation and respect for the breathtaking beauty of the Door County Peninsula is reflected in his work. He looks forward to many more years of discovery and experimentation in the field of natural dyeing and in creating objects of beauty. https://www.bazylistudio.com Support the show

Send us a text Link to the On Being Podcast Interview with Katherine May https://onbeing.org/programs/katherine-may-on-winter-replenishment-and-transformation/ Some Strategies for Dealing with Balance or Imbalance 1) Let Go of Linear notions of Balance. Life is not a Teeter-Totter, but an Ecosystem in which Rhythms, Seasons, and Cycles are natural. 2) Try a Change in Perspective - take a broader view and put those Cycles of life and work into larger contexts of time and geography 3) Check in with Yourself - are you feeling like you work too much? too little? are some areas of life being neglected while others micromanaged? do you need to set boundaries differently? do you need to manage time differently? 4) Check in with those you Trust - are you working too much? Or too little? Are you out of balance in other areas of your life? Is this just a ‘season’ of more or less work/free time? Do you need to renegotiate tasks and responsibilities with a spouse or partner for period of time? 5) Try Embracing Holy Imbalances instead of resisting those times and see what happens. Often the best moments in life occur when we are willing to embrace the imperfect, chaotic, yet wonderful times with grace. I would love to hear from you! Send us a text Christina studied Music Composition at Chapman University and graduated cum laude with a gray key award in 2005 with a BA in Music. She studied piano and composition under the late Dr. Michael Martin, and viola under the highly respected Julliard Graduate, Mr. Robert Becker. She added cello, voice, and classical guitar to her list of instruments. She writes, “From the moment I taught my first lesson in 2003 at Olympia Russian Conservatory in Fountain Valley, I realized I had found my true calling. I was appointed as piano, music theory, and strings teacher at the small Orange County music studio and my roster of students grew exponentially. Not much later, I realized I could run the show myself, so I moved on to start Irvine Music Lessons.” She opened her multi teacher studio with 150 students in Irvine, California until she relocated to Long Beach in 2010. But that’s not all. Along the way she had also developed her IT skills and she also has 20+ years of experience as a website developer & designer, specializing in creating websites for music teachers. Aside from her two careers, she volunteers at her local children’s hospital, alongside the music therapist. https://www.webmaestra.com/ https://christinapiano.com/ Christina's Top 5 Encouraging Songs Playlist Christina's Top 5 Encouraging Playlist 1) In Repair by Our Lady Peace https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kve68... 2) This is Your Night by Amber https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOqDd... 3) isobel by Bjork https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGPYO... 4) Autre Temps by Alcest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85c-P... 5) Angels and Saints by Neverending White Lights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZUSZ... Send us a text Steve Treseler is a Seattle-based saxophonist, teaching artist, and composer. DownBeat Magazine calls his music “beautifully crafted ensemble pieces—whether free, through-composed, or somewhere in between." His collaborations with renowned trumpeter Ingrid Jensen have been featured in The New York Times , DownBeat , and on NPR . Steve is the founder of Infinite Improvisation, offering creative music experiences in a variety of mediums: in-person and virtual workshops, instructional books, and digital courses. In this episode, listen for how my guest, Steve Treseler, describes the people and moments of encouragement in his journey. I hope you’ll be encouraged by thinking about your ‘best self’ or ‘future version of yourself’ and then how you can move that direction. I had several great take-aways from this conversation. I invite you to lean into the encouragement Steve mentions of ‘when you are running away from something, you are running towards something else’ and to ‘follow your appetite.’ I love how Steve talks about his sources of motivation, creativity, and encouragement during 2020, including his daughter, his collaborative projects, taking on learning new technology to compose and produce music, and doing his part to give back to others. Be sure to check out the links for Steve’s Playlist of his Top 5 encouraging pieces of music. And definitely catch who he mentions he went to school with! Dang Steve…so cool!
