The divisive film was initially marketed as a true story about 30,000 women forced to convert to Islam to join the militia group known as the Islamic State. However, the Supreme Court asked the filmmakers to add a disclaimer to highlight the fact the story is a work of fiction and that the information marketed was wildly inaccurate. As per official data, 100-200 women have joined the Islamic State from India, and the women from Kerala make up less than a quarter of this figure. The film has therefore come under intense scrutiny for its alleged attempts to malign communities. So for today’s List Hai Toh Hit Hai podcast, we take a look at six films that courted controversy. The Golden Globes 2024 awards ceremony was a star-studded affair at the Beverly Hilton, with filmmakers and actors from across film and television in attendance. Typical of award ceremonies, there were plenty of jaw-dropping wins and a few shocking snubs. There was even a new category introduced this year called the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, which several commentators labelled as a token award created just so that Barbie took home at least one Globe this year. And as it turns out, it did. Whereas, Oppenheimer, the other half of the cultural phenomenon Barbenheimer, deservedly won top honours including Best Drama Film, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor, among others. The sci-fi dark comedy Poor Things and the HBO drama Succession predictably won big at the ceremony. And the biggest snub of the year was Celine Song’s debut romantic drama Past Lives. Despite being widely regarded as one of the best films of 2023 receiving several accolades including five Golden Globes nominations, Past Lives failed to win a single award. Netflix’s latest release titled Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire has received mixed reviews. Considering Zack Snyder’s cultural influences and his ability to create countless discourses about his films, it is no surprise that Rebel Moon has had this effect on audiences and critics. It can be best described as an engaging new space opera film, packed with visually arresting action and drama. The film’s flair and kitsch have been well received by viewers who’ve slotted it as one that may not win you over if you’ve not been a fan of Snyder’s characteristic style. Most criticism surrounding the film centers around the fact that the film feels like a reductive jumble of compelling visuals and genre-specific clichés, with little time and effort invested in character development. In any case, the film does lack coherence with a greater emphasis placed on style rather than content, which leaves significant narrative gaps. Learn more about your ad choices. Movies based on the Mumbai mafia have often delved into Maximum City’s dark underbelly and presented nefarious characters through a rather unfiltered lens. While these outlaws, who are often based on real-life figures, commit despicable crimes, they are also depicted as victims of their circumstances – and their choices thus seem only inevitable if not fuelled by their survival instincts. These morally ambiguous stories of gangsters who are equally feared and respected make for a compelling watch. And these movies trace their life from their humble beginnings leading up to their devastating and tragic ends. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The sequel to the comedy satire Oh My God! starring Akshay Kumar releases in theatres this weekend. Titled, OMG 2, the film promises to be a hilarious satire with plenty of familiar plot devices that defined the previous film’s universal popularity. The sequel also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam in prominent roles, and it is directed by Amit Rai. Like the previous film in the franchise, this one falls in the bucket of films where God descends on Earth to engage with a human who finds himself in a rather perplexing situation. Now, films about such divine exchanges allow makers the creative liberty to delve into a range of topics. After all, given an opportunity, should you get a chance to meet your maker, what would be the first set of concerns or doubts you’d like clarified. From metaphysical questions on the meaning of life to flippant queries about the circumstances in after-life – there’s just so much material to work with. While some of these films have managed to realise these aspects to their potential, others have just made a mockery of the premise. For today’s List Hai Toh Hit Hai, we take a look at films and TV shows featuring such interactions with the Almighty. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

OTTplay List hai toh hit hai - 7 compelling movies and shows of ‘Oppenheimer’ star Cillian Murphy available on OTT in India - Episode 200 Irish actor Cillian Murphy is set to play the titular role in the highly-anticipated Christopher Nolan film, Oppenheimer. Despite being revered as one of the finest actors of this generation, Murphy has largely shied away from the Hollywood spotlight. However, the Peaky Blinders star could soon become a household name if Nolan’s upcoming biopic on Robert J Oppenheimer smashes box office records as is being predicted by industry pundits. Murphy has managed to impress us in a variety of indie films across genres including The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Breakfast on Pluto, and Anthropoid among others. For today’s List Hai Toh Hit Hai, we have curated a list of films starring the light-eyed Irishman available on streaming platforms in India. Perhaps, you can chase Oppenheimer with these if you’re a bonafide Cillian Murphy fan. The Dark Knight trilogy Cillian Murphy has collaborated with Christopher Nolan on several occasions since he auditioned for the role of Batman in Batman Begins. While the actor lost out on the big role to Christian Bale, Nolan was so impressed with Murphy’s performances that he cast him as the villain Jonathan Crane aka Scarecrow. He has subsequently appeared in all three instalments of The Dark Knight trilogy and is the only Batman villain to do so. Incidentally, he is also the first actor to play a live-action version of the Scarecrow for film or television. We bet you didn’t know that. Inception Cillian Murphy’s role in Inception is probably one of his most memorable roles. The 2010 film was Christopher Nolan’s most ambitious film at the time — and one that had been Nolan’s pet project for several years. Murphy stars as Robert Fischer, the heir to a vast business empire. His character happens to be the target of an elaborate heist orchestrated by a team led by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Dominick Cobb, who specialises in infiltrating people’s minds. Upon release, the film became a global sensation – featuring an ensemble cast of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Elliot Page, Tom Hardy, Dileep Rao, Ken Watanabe, Tom Berenger, and Michael Caine. Dunkirk The 2017 World War II drama Dunkirk is yet another Nolan film starring Cillian Murphy, in a pivotal role. The film is based on true events surrounding the evacuation of English, French, and Belgian soldiers from the coastal town of Dunkirk, France, after German troops launch a heaving offensive on land, air, and water. Murphy slips into the role of a British soldier who is rescued by a civilian boat. He essays a complex character, who is terrified, conflicted, and traumatised. The film boasts of a star-studded ensemble of Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, Barry Keoghan, Michael Caine, and Fionn Whitehead among others in prominent roles. The film was laude

The Trial starring Bollywood star Kajol is set to release on Disney+ Hotstar on July 14th. The legal drama is a remake of the hit American TV show, The Good Wife, headlined by Julianna Margulies. It is among the several international shows remade in Hindi, including the upcoming series Citadel, a remake of the 2023 Prime Video original series of the same name. An obvious concern with these remakes is whether they would manage to deliver the story in an authentic manner or will the essence of the plot be lost in translation. Some also argue that such adaptations serve as a tribute to the original work and remaking it in another language, only allows for the story to reach and be appreciated by a wider audience. And in doing so, certain creative liberties should be allowed in refurbishing the story to blend into the new setting while retaining the spirit of the original writing. Have Indian remakes managed to live up to the iconic international shows they’ve been adapted from? Let’s find out in today’s List hai toh hit hai where we list Indian shows that have been remade from popular international shows. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Thunivu can be billed as one of the most ambitious heist movies of 2023 as yet. But despite a reasonably average theatrical run and managing to cross swords with Vijay’s Varisu in cinemas, it is, essentially, a very exaggerated if not overrated film. Indian movies about great robberies have ranged from plagiarised versions of Hollywood blockbusters such as Sanjay Gupta’s Kaante to those which elaborately furnish inconceivable thefts that almost seem impossible to pull off such as Dhoom 2. From considering wildly unlikely scenarios and unprecedented turn of events, these films have managed to thrill us beyond measure. And Thunivu surely pales in comparison to some of the more compelling Indian heist movies. In fact, on a scale of ‘avoidable’ to ‘mind-blowing’, Thunivu probably falls under ‘for Ajith fans only’. But worry not, you’re in luck, we’ve put together a list of some of the best Indian heist movies ever made that you need to stream right now. Learn more about your ad choices. Most notably, revered Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer is considered a groundbreaking film about homosexuality and first love. Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster Dune took home six Oscars this year. The critically acclaimed film, based on Frank Herbert’s novels, has amassed a cult following across the globe. On today’s List hai toh hit hai podcast we take a look at six films and TV shows you might enjoy if you loved Dune. I'm your host Nikhil, let's kickstart the list Star Trek (1969) - (Netflix) One of the earliest and most popular adaptations of intergalactic space exploration was the 1969 TV series Star Trek. Starring William Shatner, Leanord Nimoy, along with a vast ensemble, the story is about a spaceship called the U.S.S Enterprise in the 23rd century and its crew led by Captain James T Kirk, played by Shatner. They are tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets. The series has become part of pop culture and has spawned multiple reboots, remakes, and spin-offs in both film and television. Cowboy Bebop (1998) (Netflix) Revered as one of the greatest anime TV shows ever created, Cowboy Bebop, was lauded for its unique aesthetic of intertwining western and noir themes into a futuristic story about intergalactic space exploration and human settlements in the outer reaches of the galaxy. The engaging narrative was aided by its compelling characters and excellent music. It was recently made into an unsuccessful live-action adaptation by Netflix and was canceled after one season. However, the animated version released in 1996 continues to be held in high regard. The Expanse (2015-2022) (Prime Video) The Expanse is possibly one of the lesser-known titles on this list. However, the critically acclaimed series offers one of the most riveting narratives about a futuristic human civilisation that has colonized various planets. Based on the novels by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the series was developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. It ran for six seasons and was produced by Amazon Studios. The series was praised for its visuals, sound, design, and relevant socio-political themes. Star Wars: A New Hope (Episode IV) (Disney+ Hotstar) The biggest and most popular name on this list is Star Wars: A New Hope - the film that launched the multi-billion dollar franchise. It is widely regarded as one of the best in the series, one that redefined the sci-fi genre. Created by George Lucas, it stars Mark Hamil, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Alec Guinness in lead roles, The story and the lore have taken inspiration from Frank Herbert’s Dune. Foundation (2021) (Apple TV+) The first mainstream story about human settlement in outer space was introduced to the general audience when Issac Asimov released the first novel of Foundation in 1951. The Oscars are back, and this year’s Academy Awards had many firsts, and we don’t just mean the choice of winners. If you’ve crawled through your social media feed, you’re already updated on the onstage altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock. But the event hosted by Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall was a ceremony packed with unceremonious exchanges. From intentionally confusing siblings to be a couple to objectifying male actors for a laugh, this was an event that would be remembered for years, but for reasons beyond the winners. So for today’s episode of List hai toh hit hai, we’re revisiting 5 Oscar moments that were just as awkward as Will Smith laying a tight one across Chris Rock’s face and perhaps, just as inappropriate as the G.I.Jane comment that triggered it. Amy Schumer confuses Kirsten Dunst for a sit-filler First up, Amy Schumer’s crowd work at the event could be dubbed as anything but politically correct. One of her most inappropriate digs at the Oscars found her scampering into the audience to heckle the esteemed guests. Do note, this was shortly after Will Smith’s public display of rage when the audience was already in a tense and awkward mood. Schumer’s targets were The Power of the Dog actors Jesse Plemons and his wife and co-star, Kirsten Dunst. Schumer introduced the Oscar-nominated actress Dunst as a ‘seat filler’ and commended her on the job and even asked her to “visit the washroom” while she took her seat to break into a banter with Plemons. While the setup for the joke was not entirely offensive, Schumer’s execution seemed forced and Plemons’ unenthusiastic reaction took the wind out of the gag. Amy Schumer on the Ukrainian war If Sean Penn’s threats of melting his Oscar trophies if Ukrainian President Zelensky wasn’t allowed to voice his concerns at the Academy Awards is anything to go by, one knows that Hollywood is serious about their stand on world affairs. But Schumer’s one-cent-worth on the war in Ukraine shot with a smug face and disinterested manner, seemed particularly in poor taste. While wrapping up her audience exchanges, Schumer suddenly broke into“…and there is a genocide going on in the Ukraine and women are losing their rights, and now please welcome last year’s winner, and trans people, for actor in a leading role Anthony Hopkins.” Now, this is why those operating the teleprompters should hold their drinks till the afterparty. The sudden and fleeting reference to the war in Ukraine was glaringly misplaced, and addressing ‘trans people’ was perhaps a bizarre pivot from women’s rights being infringed. Sadly, she dashed through the segment like a zombie on antibiotics, leaving the audience at the event and the rest of us watching at home, equally confused and uncomfortable. Leonardo DiCaprio’s allegedly young girlfriends Earlier in the show, Amy Schumer took a dig at Leonardo DiCaprio implying that he prefe

Welcome to another special podcast of List hai toh hit hai, I am your host Nikhil and this is OTTplay. I’m your host Nikhil, Let’s begin From Zodiac to Dial M for Murder, in today’s List hai toh hit hai, we’re listing some of the most spine-chilling crime mysteries. Crime mysteries have always enthralled audiences of all ages. From unsolved murders to serial killings, there’s a twisted pleasure in accessing damaged minds who commit unspeakable crimes. And what’s even more exciting is the journey that detectives and law enforcement officers embark on - in an attempt to get to the bottom of the affair. It’s hardly surprising then that crime thrillers and mysteries have been one of the most profitable genres in Hollywood in recent decades. From Alfred Hitchcock’s classics to adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s bestsellers, the list of crime-thrillers is endless. But here’s a selection of films that you ought to watch if you’ve got an appetite for thrillers. Zodiac The 2007 thriller, starring the likes of Robert Downy Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo, is based on the life of the real-life serial killer who terrorised the San Francisco Bay Area between the late 1960s and early 1970s. The film follows the murders which are believed to have been committed by the serial killer who was given the moniker “Zodiac Killer”. Rating - 7.9 Available - Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hungama, Vi Dial M for Murder Few filmmakers come close to the brilliance of Alfred Hitchcock when it comes to thrillers. One of the most memorable masterpieces of the director is Dial M for Murder. The film follows the devious plan that man hatches to murder his wife when he finds out that she’s having an affair. KNIVES OUT Knives Out is a comedy crime film which is fashioned like a classic “whodunit”. The 2017 movie, featuring Branagh in the role of the legendary Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot, roped in some of the biggest names in the business. Johnny Depp, Olivia Colman and Judi Dench came on board to recreate the mysterious, grizzly murder that takes place on board a luxury train. From the cantankerous White Russian Princess (played by Dench) to a nefarious art dealer (played by Depp), Branagh’s film was deliberately over-the-top. Despite the action centerered around what seems like an implausible murder, Branagh’s characters ensure the film never veers into grim territory. Also starring Penélope Cruz, Wil

The following is a list that takes you through some of the best satires available on the streaming platforms.
