In this engaging episode of Modern Mom Probs , host Tara Clark sits down with Dr. Sara Reardon, a renowned pelvic health physical therapist and creator of the Vagina Whisperer, to shed light on the often-overlooked topic of women’s pelvic health. Tara and Dr. Reardon explore why proactive care is essential, how pelvic floor muscles function, and what women can do to maintain long-term pelvic health. Dr. Reardon offers practical tips—from proper posture and bathroom habits to breathing techniques and the importance of using lubrication for comfortable sexual experiences. They discuss how common events like C-sections and menopause can affect pelvic health, and why women shouldn’t wait for symptoms to seek help. Dr. Reardon emphasizes the need to address both strength and relaxation in the pelvic floor and encourages regular therapy to prevent future issues. The conversation also touches on the importance of normalizing pelvic health discussions, building community support, and fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals. Dr. Reardon shares how the vibrant culture of New Orleans influences her work and content creation, and she introduces her new book, Floored , which serves as an empowering resource for women seeking to better understand and care for their pelvic health. Key Takeaways: Women often neglect pelvic health until problems arise—proactive education is key. Pelvic floor muscles need both strength and relaxation to function well. Posture, sitting habits, and proper bathroom techniques (like using a stool) make a big difference. C-section scars can create pelvic tension—therapy and awareness help. Breathing exercises and regular pelvic floor therapy can be preventive tools. Lubrication is essential for pain-free, enjoyable sex. Conversations around pelvic health must be normalized to break the stigma. Community and professional support are crucial, especially during menopause. Dr. Reardon’s book, Floored , offers education and empowerment for every woman. Whether you're recovering postpartum, approaching menopause, or simply curious about your own body, this episode is a must-listen. Don’t miss this empowering conversation that encourages women to take charge of their pelvic health—with confidence. This is a concept that might seem foreign to some, but Elizabeth insists that our professional lives and spiritual well-being are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are deeply connected. One of the most significant barriers that modern moms face is the relentless self-judgment and criticism that we impose on ourselves. Elizabeth's message is clear: the cages we find ourselves in are often of our own making, and the doors are never truly locked. By challenging our scarcity mindset and survival brain, we can open ourselves up to new possibilities. She suggests seeking therapy, exploring holistic practices, and breaking routine patterns as ways to shift our mindset and embrace the freedom we deserve. This conversation is a reminder of the power of our inner voice and the importance of honoring it. Whether it's a dream deferred or a nagging feeling that there's more to life, it's never too late to make a change. Remember, the journey to fulfillment is not just about the destination but about the growth and discovery along the way. In this episode, Tara welcomes Dr. Maggie Vaughan, award-winning Psychotherapist and head of youth transformation at tapouts. Their discussion delves into the pervasive issues of mom guilt and burnout, offering strategies and insights invaluable to modern moms. Dr. Vaughan explores the impact of intensive parenting trends, which have placed an immense burden on mothers. The societal expectation that a mother's constant engagement is directly proportional to her child's success has led to an epidemic of stress and burnout. Mothers are feeling the pressure to dedicate every waking moment to their children, often at the expense of their own well-being. She advises them to prioritize quality engagement with their children over quantity, suggesting that even ten minutes of focused time can significantly impact a child's development. This approach fosters secure attachments and nurtures independent, confident, and resilient children. She also emphasizes the necessity of self-care for mothers. It's crucial to recognize that children need well-adjusted parents. Sacrificing sleep, leisure time, and support to spend every moment with our kids can lead to exhaustion and stress that ultimately trickles down to them. Dr. Vaughan highlights the benefits of seeking support, whether from family, friends, or programs like tapouts. tapouts offers life skills coaching that can alleviate some of the pressures of parenting, helping children learn critical life skills that benefit the entire family unit. Both Tara and Dr. Vaughan share personal experiences with the program and praise tapouts for its positive reinforcement and fun learning environment. In this episode, Tara welcomes Audrey Wisch, the founder of Curious Cardinals, a platform that empowers K-12 students to achieve their potential through mentorship. Audrey's journey from a history major at Stanford to the founder of a platform that empowers K-12 students is nothing short of inspiring. She shares how her tutoring experience during the pandemic led her to create a platform that connects students' school subjects to their passions, making learning more engaging and fun. Tara and Audrey have a candid discussion about the generational divide between parents and their children's interests. For instance, many kids today want to be YouTubers, but many parents don't know how to foster those passions or provide the necessary skills. Audrey shares a fascinating story about a girl who loved TikTok and how they helped her discover her interest in stop motion photography. They also discuss ways that parents can support their children's passions and interests without getting in the way. Many parents can be "helicopter parents" who push their kids into certain activities or career paths that may not align with their true interests. Instead, Audrey suggests taking a step back and allowing children to independently pursue their passions. She also emphasizes the power of mentorship and representation. She believes that a good mentor should possess qualities like passion, excitement, curiosity, compassion, and emotional intelligence. In this episode, Tara welcomes Alyssa Blask Campbell, CEO of Sew and Seed. Alyssa is a trusted expert in emotional development and the host of the popular podcast "Voices of Your Village." The conversation centers around Alyssa's new book, "Tiny Humans, Big Emotions: How to Navigate Tantrums, Meltdowns, and Defiance to Raise Emotionally Intelligent Children." Alyssa shares that the book is based on Collaborative Emotion Processing (CEP), a method for being with and moving through hard things. She and her colleague, Lauren Stauble developed this method after realizing that traditional behavior-focused approaches were not effective in real-life parenting situations. They wanted to create a comprehensive approach that focuses on the adult's self-awareness and self-care, as well as the interaction between adults and children. Tara and Alyssa discuss the importance of emotional intelligence and its impact on daily life. Alyssa shares how her perspective on emotional intelligence shifted when she started envisioning a world where these tools were accessible to everyone, including her own child and future generations. She emphasizes the need for emotional intelligence in adults, especially those in positions of power, so they can support others and model healthy ways of navigating difficult situations. Alyssa explains that emotional intelligence consists of five components: self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, social skills, and motivation. She highlights the significance of self-awareness, as it is the foundation for regulating emotions and accessing the other components. Alyssa uses personal examples, such as a social media backlash, to illustrate the importance of recognizing dysregulation cues and taking a step back before responding. They also touch on empathy and how it is best taught through modeling. Instead of claiming to understand exactly how someone feels in a given situation, she suggests connecting with the emotions someone is experiencing, rather than focusing on why they are feeling that way. This week, Tara welcomes the multi-talented Rachael Kay Albers. Rachael is not just a creative director and brand strategist, but also a comedian, actor, self-described "brand strategist gone wild" and the host of the podcast "Marketing Muckraking.” Rachael's approach to branding is playful, experimental, and deeply insightful. She's interested in understanding the effects of brand culture and marketing on society and humanity. Rachael explains that a brand is more than just a logo or a tagline. It's a memory that lives in the minds of its audience, consisting of expectations, experiences, memories, and reputation. She emphasizes that consistency and predictability are key to curating a specific memory in the audience's mind. Rachael delves into the concept of personal branding, which has exploded in recent years, especially on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok and even LinkedIn. She discusses the two extremes of personal branding - the pressure to present oneself as a curated, predictable, and dependable person, and the trend of embracing vulnerability and authenticity by sharing one's deepest pain and imperfections. According to her, true authenticity lies somewhere in the middle, where individuals can be themselves without manufacturing pain or presenting a perfect persona. The conversation also touches on the influence of personal brands on children, particularly with the rise of youth influencers and unboxing videos. Rachael expresses concern about the blurred lines between entertainment and advertising for children on YouTube and the need for parents to help their kids navigate this new age of personal branding. She encourages us to step back into our own reality and reclaim our humanness instead of getting caught up in the illusion of the branded world. Did the TikTok “Egg Crack Challenge” make you cringe? Us too. This week, Sarah Adams, creator of the popular social media account, Mom Uncharted, joined the show to shed light on child exploitation on social media. Sarah's journey began in late 2017 when she became a mother and started following mommy influencers for guidance and support. However, during the pandemic, she noticed an unsettling trend of parents oversharing their children's lives online. This led her to delve deeper into the subject, sparking conversations with her husband, reading books, and eventually starting her own TikTok account to discuss child exploitation and minor safety online. In this enlightening and thought-provoking conversation, Sarah emphasized the importance of trust and privacy when it comes to sharing information and images of children online. She raised concerns about the development of parasocial relationships with other people's children and the need for parents to be more cautious about who they trust with intimate information and personal pictures of their kids. This resonated with Tara, making her reevaluate her own approach to sharing her son's life on social media. Sarah discussed a concerning trend where some parents are selling exclusive content of their influencer children, without considering the potential risks and consequences of who may be subscribing to it. The conversation shifted to the topic of family vloggers, discussing the recent case of Ruby Franke from the YouTube channel “Eight Passengers.” This case highlighted the lack of regulations and protections for children involved in this industry, raising questions about privacy and the potential for abuse. This discussion was a stark reminder of the importance of protecting children's privacy in the digital age and the potential impact on children's mental health as they grow up and become aware of their online presence. This week, Tara welcomed Chesca Hause, the talented cartoonist behind the popular Litter Box Comics and author of the new book "Parenting is Weird: Tales from the Litter Box." Chesca's comics are a humorous take on the rollercoaster ride of motherhood. She draws inspiration from her own family experiences (except for the fact they’re cats), making her work relatable, heartwarming and hilarious. Chesca's journey into the world of webcomics began with her own family. She found humor in the ups and downs of motherhood, using it as a way to navigate through the craziness. Her oldest son, a high-needs baby who didn't enjoy being a baby, was a significant source of inspiration. As he grew older and things got better, Chesca found herself drawing from her family experiences to create Litter Box Comics, highlighting the good, bad, and laugh out loud aspects of parenting. Tara and Chesca took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about ‘80s movies. They agreed that timing is key when introducing these classics to children. Jurassic Park and Who Framed Roger Rabbit were hits in their houses. Ghostbusters and Labyrinth not so much! How would you have liked it if your parents shared every embarrassing detail of your childhood with friends and family? It’s a good thing the 80s and 90s weren’t that documented. Just think about the hairstyles and outfits alone! In this week’s podcast episode, Tara interviews Dr. Devorah Heitner, an expert in media technology and society and author of the new book, Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World. Tara and Dr. Heitner explore the concept of 'sharenting' - parents sharing about their families online. While it can be a way for parents to seek recognition and maintain connections, Dr. Heitner encourages us to engage in real-life conversations and respect our children's privacy. One phone call with a good friend can be more beneficial than 1,000 Instagram likes. The pair also discuss the importance of teaching children about consent and privacy. By respecting their privacy at home, parents can guide children to understand the ethical implications of sharing content without consent. They also stress the need to prepare kids for situations where they may encounter inappropriate content or unsolicited messages online. They even highlight the importance of teaching kids about their options when faced with negative comments or uncomfortable situations online. What’s a parent to do in this brave new digital world? Dr. Heitner emphasizes actively mentoring kids and having open conversations about online behavior, even if it’s uncomfortable. Are you a “good enough” mother? On the latest episode of Modern Mom Probs, Tara welcomes Dr. Tanya Cotler, a seasoned psychologist specializing in reproductive and maternal mental health and the parent-child relationship. Dr. Cotler explored the idea of the "good enough mother," a term coined by Donald Winnicott in the 1950s. Being a good enough mother means finding a balance between not being overly precise or intrusive in parenting, while also not being dismissive. This approach allows the child to develop into their true self while still receiving the necessary care and support from their mother. Dr. Cotler explains that if a parent is overly hands-on or too dismissive, there is not enough space for the child to develop their own identity. This can lead to the development of a false self or a coping mechanism like people-pleasing. The key is finding the sweet spot! To explore further, she touched on the phase of maternal preoccupation in early motherhood, where the mother is completely focused on the child. However, as the child grows, there needs to be space for them to become their own person. Good enough mothering also involves allowing the child to experience failures and frustrations, which helps them develop trust and frustration tolerance. In this insightful, relatable conversation, Dr. Cotler also emphasizes the need for mothers to create space for themselves, allowing for a range of emotions and reducing shame. She discusses the concept of rupture and repair in parent-child relationships and highlights the importance of inner repair through self-reflection. She is currently working on a book that explores maternal mental health and parent-child attachment. If you’ve ever wondered if you’re a “good enough” mother, you should listen to this episode. This week, Tara had the pleasure of welcoming Brooke Romney, author of the best-selling books 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens (Volumes 1 & 2) and 52 Modern Manners for Kids. Their conversation revolved around the importance of teaching manners and social skills to children and how these contribute to a successful and connected life. Brooke, a mother of four boys, shared her insights on how teaching manners is not just about appearances, but about helping kids feel successful on the inside. This, in turn, boosts their self-confidence and relationships. Teaching social skills and manners has long-term benefits, such as building confidence and liking oneself from within. Brooke shared her favorite manners from her books, including the importance of introducing oneself and finding new friends if current friendships are consistently negative. In today's digital age, kids often miss out on observing the world around them. Brooke emphasized the importance of parents stepping in to teach their children manners and social skills. Tara and Brooke discussed the importance of building awareness as a foundational skill for teaching manners. This includes being aware of their surroundings, "reading the room," and knowing when it's appropriate to talk about certain topics. Tara and Brooke emphasized the need for parents to actively teach these skills, as they are not always absorbed naturally. This week, Tara welcomes fellow only child Jen Dalton, creator of the Instagram account "One and Done Parenting." Tara and Jen both share their experience as only children with only children. Jen explores her decision to have only one child due to a traumatic birth experience. Tara shares her journey of infertility and miscarriages before finally having her son. They also discuss the benefits of being an only child, such as developing strong social skills in uncomfortable environments, making them naturally social adults. Tara and Jen also explore the benefits of having only one child, such as saying yes more frequently to their child’s requests and having the ability to focus on their child's needs and desires without having to consider the needs of multiple children. Jen and Tara address negative stereotypes and potential loneliness, particularly around the holiday season as well as the importance of building a supportive community outside of blood relatives. For families on the fence about having another child, Jen suggests asking themselves if they truly wish to have another child in their care and considering their long-term goals. She emphasizes that children should be wanted by both parents and that having doubts should be explored before making the decision to introduce another baby into the family. In conclusion, the conversation highlights the joys and challenges of being a 'one and done' parent. It's a decision that comes with its own unique set of challenges, but ultimately, it's about creating a loving and nurturing environment for our children.
