In this edition, we're diving into the episode featuring Evans Putman , who managed to attract an astonishing 4.5 million listeners without relying on paid ads. Let's uncover the key takeaways from Evans' journey and how you can apply them to your own podcasting endeavors. Evans Putman shared his experience in building a thriving community group coaching program. He took time to identify his audience and what they needed. He came up with a program that included free tools for his audience, an affiliate program for promoters, and a community of future customers for Evans. It was called the success toolbox with over 200 items, which guests contributed to, creating a win-win situation for everyone involved. Everything was working great. So he left... Now, with more time on his hands, he's launched two new resources for podcasters. One of the fascinating insights from Evans' story is his focus on building a collaborative community rather than solely on content. He discovered that by providing valuable content and serving his audience, he was able to attract a loyal following. What's remarkable is that the relationship built through the toolbox and podcast resulted in people approaching Evans with their credit cards ready to buy. By offering valuable free content, Evans nurtured a relationship of trust and credibility with his listeners, leading to meaningful conversions. Evans also shared his strategy for leveraging platforms like LinkedIn and Medium to expand his reach. By breaking down show notes from his podcast episodes and creating compelling headlines, he was able to drive traffic to his content. He strategically included curiosity-driven paragraphs or sentences at the top of his posts, encouraging listeners to click on the embedded podcast player below the written content. The mental shift that launched it all is when Evan went from Selling to S erving. He was wearing a servepreneur shirt when I interviewed him. We both believe that you don't benefit until your audience benefits. Remember, your podcast has the potential to not only amplify your message but also generate revenue and build a strong community of listeners. Years ago there was a course builder called Member Vault that had a fully functional free plan that enabled you to sell your course. This was a great way to get proof of concept. Once you had people buying your course/community, you could then upgrade to a higher plan (which you could afford). Unfortunately, they turned off their free version. Recently I discovered Fresh Learn , which has a fully functional free plan. If you need to upgrade, it's only $39/month ($29 if you go for a year). If you need to "No Brainer" version, it's only $69 a month ($49 if you go with a year). It's very impressive, and while other sites like Teachable are raising their fees, the two systems I'm talking about today have zero fees. Fresh Learn has no fees on any plan, and neither does New Zenler . New Zenler is $67/month and is similar to Kajabi. While Fresh Learn also has marketing tools (email lists), New Zenler (being around longer) appears to have a few more. Fresh Learn has 20/7 live chat which is nice. As a customer of New Zenler I can say that their service is like nothing I have ever experienced. They are constantly doing live sessions where you can connect and work with others as well as demos, open Q&A sessions and more. Their email support was helpful and quick. Part of this was kicked off by hearing that Teachable is raising their fees (not a ton, but meanwhile, these two options don't have ANY fees) The point of this episode was to show that if you want proof of concept without paying for a course tool, then Fresh Learn may be something you need to check out. On this episode of Profit From Your Podcast, Dave Jackson delves into the topic of monetizing podcasts beyond just sponsorships. Guest Michelle Jackson shares how she started the project Podcasters Getting Paid to address the reluctance of podcasters to spend money on learning how to monetize their shows. Michelle predicts that the industry will change in the next year or two as more people become frustrated with not seeing results. Michelle offers her insights on matching the right product with the right audience and creating supplementary content. The episode offers valuable advice for podcasters looking to monetize their shows in creative and profitable ways. Check out the book Profit From Your Podcast: Proven Strategies to Turn Listeners into a Livelihood Volley Is Going Out Of Business Back on episode 55, I interviewed Josh Little. Josh made a GREAT Product and had a GREAT staff. In my opinion, they had too much "good stuff" in the free version of their app. Consequently, people didn't upgrade. This was my favorite tool for asynchronous coaching. I've replaced it with Zip Messenger In This Episode [00:05:24] Podcasters are reluctant to monetize and spend money to learn, still preferring free resources; this will likely change in a few years. Podcasting has become a popular way to make money and share your voice with the world. It's no secret that many people have used podcasting as a way to monetize their content and make a living. But creating a successful podcast takes time and dedication, making it difficult for those just starting out to see success quickly. In this article, we will explore if you can realistically make $500 in your first month of podcasting with the right strategies and techniques for monetization. There are always exceptions to the rule. I've interviewed people who had such a niche show that they had a sponsor before they released an episode. So yes, it is possible, but for many people with an "Inspiration Podcast with Inspirational People with Inspirational Stories" it may be quite a bit harder. New podcasters often ask if they can make $500 in their first month It depends on various factors such as existing audience size, celebrity status, and podcasting talent. To examine the question from a logical point of view, consider the example of "Bill," a new podcaster with no audience and no product or service to sell. Podcast hosting companies report median download numbers of around 158 per episode after 45 days, and the average is around 1,520. If a podcast is only getting less than 10 downloads per episode, there is likely something wrong with the show. Some companies claim that new podcasters can make money from day one, but the reality is that earnings will likely be very low. Sure it is "better than a poke in the eye" but still a long LONG way off from the $500/month goal. In my travels and conversations, in order to make a significant amount of money from podcasting, most podcasters have multiple streams of income and have been podcasting for a while. (3 Years seems to be a common answer to "how long does it take?). It is also essential to have a clear plan for monetization, as simply hoping to make money from advertising may not be a reliable strategy. Unlocking the Secrets of Podcast Monetization So many webinars are boring, and let's face it you never watch those replays. What is the answer? A laser-focused workshop that helps you take the steps to come up with a strategy for your show. It's happening on December 17th see https://podcasttalentcoach.com/sop You will build your monetization strategy in three hours. The workshop is limited to 12 participants to ensure you get lots of help. The organizer is Erik K Johnson ( the Podcast Talent Coach ). Erik has over 30 years of radio, and is also the co-host (with me) on the Podcast Review Show . Today We Talk About The biggest challenges podcasters face. 1:49 The four steps of the sales process. 4:12 Why I’m only allowing 12 people in the workshop? How many webinars have you put into use to actually move your business forward? For more information about the workshop CLICK HERE . Are You Making This Podcast Mistakes That is Costing You Sales? I'm seeing more and more of my coaching clients that are sending their listeners to the very basic website from their media host when all the "magic" of products and services along with newsletter sign-ups are on their own website. Treat each episode like a blog post and take your episode description and post it on your website and then embed the player into that post (along with buttons to subscribe and follow). The magic is happening on YOUR website. When people link to it, it may boost YOUR SEO, and it may then increase your time on site (which Google pays attention to). Volley Introduces Monetization I talk with Josh from Volley back on episode 55 and I mentioned that I wanted Volley to have a business plan. They launched Volley pro (where you get additional features) but for those who do coaching and consulting and want to get PAID, they just launch "Consult with me on Volley" and it is SO EASY. It works with Stripe and so when people pay you Stripe deposits it into your bank. Volley takes 5% of the transition and stripe will add the typical 2.9% etc fees Create an Entry Level Consulting Service If you have people who want to " Pick Your Brain " you can create a one-time service for (example) 10 minutes and then charge them a small fee. The person downloads the Volley app (it works on everything and it's free) and takes 3 minutes to ask a question. You take 2 minutes to answer it and the person has 5 more minutes to ask questions. It is a great "Get you in the door" service that can easily help you start building relationships with leads and customers. The loyalty this can build in your clients is amazing. See my Consult with Volley Page My Weight Loss Experiment I and a few friends found a free weight loss challenge app. It has inspired me to lose some weight. I'm now making it more official and adding a community for support with that pinch of competition (with obtainable goals, and nobody can see how much you weigh). There will also be zoom calls for accountability. One of the first ways I made money with my podcast is when a member of the School of Podcasting asked if I knew an editor. Who did I recommend? Me. They just wanted to talk into the microphone and hand it off to someone. That was back in 2005, and things haven't changed. Some people love editing, and other people "just want to talk into the microphone." Back on episode 752 I interview Mark Deal and Steve Stewart from the Podcast Editor Academy which is an amazing resource with tutorials on software (Hindenburg, Reaper, etc) but it also talks about the business of being a podcaster editor. We all love customers, but there are some people who are NOT your target audience, and yet we create strategies that cause unrealistic expectations in your customers, or we get a great customer who can be a little forgetful. The Black Friday Sale When you do one of those HOLY COW - UNBELIEVABLE DISCOUNT Black Friday kind of sale, you get two types of customers. The customer purchases and does nothing with your product as they have no skin in the game A customer who didn't read the offer, but jumps in because it is so good, and then expect much, MUCH more than what is included in the offer Consequently, (after doing two) I will not do a "Black Friday / DEEP DISCOUNT" offer. The Yearly Subscription This typically brings you your target audience. They are a joy to work with, and they are action takers. However, a year later they forgot they purchased a recurring membership program. This leads to: Emails the day after they get charged asking, "Hey I didn't authorize this!" I just got an email from someone who purchased my product. They worked for a company, and each year they have been charged. Now two years later, they want their money back. Two Ways To Solve This Issue You can set a trigger in your CRM (I Use Less Annoying CRM) and remind them that their year subscription is coming up. Alert them how to cancel their subscription if needed. I also now send an email a week before the charge to alert them that their subscription payment is coming up. Another Strategy To Solve This Issue A yearly subscription is an easy-to-make "higher ticket price" item. You might consider raising the price on the subscription and making it "Lifetime Access" this way you get the benefits of an action-taking customer, and you don't have to worry about "I didn't authorize this payment." At Podcast Movement Evolution in LA people kept pitching me, and in a matter of seconds, I was able to tell if this person understood the podcasting market or not. Most did not. TWO TYPES OF PODCAST BUSINESSES My friend Paul Colligan from the Podcast Partnership said, "There are two types of podcast companies. One that cares about podcasting, and the other that just wants some of that sweet, sweet podcast money." YOU NEED TO SOLVE A PROBLEM If you want to make money with a podcast, you need to solve a problem. So that can be a product or service, but it can also be that you solve the problem of providing information that is not available anywhere else. THE TING ABOUT THREE YEARS I do need to clarify that I've said it takes three years to build an audience, and that is when people I interviewed for my book Profit From Your Podcast started making notable income. However, it's not the three years that enable them to make money. It is the quality of the content. Don't keep making episodes thinking, "If I can just make it 36 months I can retire." There is some luck and timing involved. NETFLIX CANCELS SHOWS Why do I think that? Netflix cancels shows. They know everything about us. They know our likes and dislikes, and yet they make shows that we don't watch and get canceled. Why? Maybe it was bad timing or good old luck of the right person finding it and telling two friends... CONCLUSION So if you want to make money, you need to solve a problem. Think about everything you buy. Be it clothes, food, netflix, etc it all solves a problem. What problem can you solve? Dynamic Content Flavors Pre and Post Rolls This enables you to add dynamic content (ads, or other promotions) at the beginning and end of your show/ Mid Rolls This enables you to content (ads, or other promotions) anywhere in your show (you select where, and the content is inserted) The dynamic part is you can change the content later and it will update all the episodes that have "Spots." Dynamic Ad Companies When I did the research for my book I used a dynamic ad insertion company that put generic ads into my show. It paid .0017 per episode. If you have 2000 downloads that calculates to $3.40 (so these only work for people with HUGE audiences. Things to Think About You need to get consistent with your recording volume as you want the dynamic content to be the same volume as the rest of the episode. You need to think about how you are going to lead into the content and come out of it. You can leave a very small space as when you pick the spot you can go down to millisecond precision. Don't have "new toy" system and drive away listeners with too many spots. There are some things you may regret doing in podcasting. Compare your show to others (always a bad idea - instead focus on your podcast Track how much time you are actually spending creating an episode (it's longer than you think) Use "Shoutouts" as a reward. This takes up time in your episode that used to be content, and in my case, I hadn't stipulated who could or could not be someone I should shout out. You always assume everything thinks like you. They don't. I would never go on a podcast where someone is a podcast consultant and attempt to get people to sign up for the School of Podcasting. Now, I have been on many shows about podcasting because the host asked me to be a guest. Even with an invite, I try to provide information that will help people be better podcasters. I rarely feel I blatantly ask people to join the School of Podcasting. However, other people (and I don't believe this was malicious) wanted to support me by promoting their service that was in direct competition with my services. I've never seen a McDonald's advertisement that ends with, "And if you like onion rings - check out Burger King." As these people are my supporters (and in many cases friends) this gets awkward. Consequently, I've added a line that anyone who can be considered a competitor to what I offer, I reserve the right to not accept your support and not promote my competition on my own show. When I Did The Math Someone was paying $20/month or $5/episode where they were consumed by 700 listeners. If this was an advertisement that calculates to $7.14 for 1000 downloads. The average right now is around $25. They should be paying me $18 an episode, not $20 a month. As always the choice is yours. I just wanted you to consider: "shoutouts" don't scale and take up valuable space in your episode Your competition may choose to advertise on your show ( so put a disclaimer in place) Work With Me You can buy my book Profit From Your Podcast. You've come up with an idea for a course. You put together some videos, pdf, and more, but you're worried about putting out the money for something like Teachable. You are pondering using something like Udemy, but then the only way you can contact your customers is through Udemy. I found out about Membervault and I love their business model. You can use if for free up to your 100th customer. Then it's only $19/month. This provides a great way to have a website, course tool, and community tool all in one for free. Is there a catch? Kind of... You need to provide the videos. So you could use something like Vimeo ($7/month) or you could create a YouTube channel and have all the videos listed as unlisted (somewhat "security through obscurity). Then later once you have proof of concept, you can move to a different solution if you want to go bigger. Membervalut has its own unique feature set in that they have a Marketplace to promote your course, and the tool is drop-dead easy. Selling is 90% mental. I used to teach sales many moons ago. When I work with clients who have products and services to sell, when I listen to their podcast their pitch sounds like this: "Hey, like if you need, I mean you don't have to, but, like, if you kinda want to, you can maybe, like, go to, you know, my website (then said so fast you can't understand it)." When I ask people why they did that they said they felt "Salesy." This typically is based on a bad stereotype of some sleazy used car salesman from the 1970s who is selling you a bucket of bolts that is going to barely make it off the car lot. Your podcast is not a bucket of bolts so shift your thoughts from "Selling" to "Helping" or "Informing." You just need to find the right people who need your products and services. When someone says no, then they weren't your target customer. I had a friend who was bummed she wasn't getting any speaking gigs. She never mentioned it once in her podcast. It doesn't have to be a giant pitch. It could be as simple as, "I was speaking at a high school and one of the students came up and asked me a question and I thought, "That would be a great topic for a podcast episode." With just that one sentence, your audience now knows you speak to high school kids. If you are looking to make money with your podcast check out my book, " Profit from your podcast ." Today I talk about an income stream that didn't exist when I wrote the book and that is bitcoin. It doesn't cost anything to get set up, and depending on your audience, this could end up being another source of income. Without really promoting the value for value model on the School of Podcasting and yet I've made $85 since June. Now I'm OBVIOUSLY not going to retire on that money, but think about how much that might be if I promoted it (or if my audience was more tied into cryptocurrency). All you need to do is install the telegram software (free) and it takes maybe 5 minutes. Jordan Harbinger has all of his ads listed under a "Deals" page. Here is why this strategy makes sense. Your audience only has to remember one website address Your audience may go there to look at one advertiser and end up purchasing from multiple Your audience doesn't have to remember coupon codes People may share that page with their friends boosting SEO Jordan actually says "/deals" in his podcast which is being tracked as the actual address is /advertising Jordan is mentioned on page 11 of Profit From Your Podcast.

Selling Advertising in Your Show When it comes to sponsors, there are four types of advertising campaigns. These are: CPM = Cost Per Thousand. You earn X amount per 1,000 downloads. CPA = Cost Per Action. You get paid when your audience makes a purchase. Flat Rate = You get paid a specified amount per episode(s) or time. Hybrid = You may get a small CPM with an additional CPA. Today we are talking about Presentation is the queen of podcasting. We also talk about Is your podcast advertiser friendly? Nobody likes a bad infomercial. Howard Stern is more than the seven dirty words. More Touches Equals More Sales Feeding Search Engines The way to stand out and get people talking about you is to deliver great content. While poor content delivered in a professional manner may be temporarily tolerated, great content delivered in an unlistenable, unwatchable format will not. While you may be promoting a service or product, an episode that is more promotion than standard content will annoy your audience. Keep advertisements short and to the point. Adding written posts to your website provides “food” for search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

To get an audience you need good content. What is good content? For me, I see it as content that makes you laugh, cry, think, groan, educate, or entertains you. If you to can more than one of these at a time you're on the right path. Today I share some example of people doing this, and point out that good content rises to the top. I also point out how the Apple charts have changed in the last 10 years. The book is available at www.morepodcastmoney.com

I saw this post from Tim Paige and I can think of so many people who will read this, and ignore it. Some people feel that the one thing keeping them from "Making it" is this really inconvenient thing called their day job. Their "side hustle" is currently bringing in $34 a month, but for some reason they think that if they only quit their job the pressure of seeing your life's savings being caught on fire will inspire you to leap into action to find a way anyway to make a living "Doing what they love." So I love this report from the front lines on how Tim actually quit his day job. Check out Tim at thevoiceoftimpaige.com or www.makemyintro.com How To Go "All In" on your Dream Job Don't quit your day job until it is costing you more money than keeping your day job. So if you turned down 40,000 worth of work because it conflicted with your 30,000 jobs, then it's time to quit your day job. This was the case for Tim. Tim also has a TREMENDOUSLY SUPPORTIVE Spouse. Tim got out of debt so that his expenses were minimal after quitting his job. He had three jobs doing anything he could to get out of debt and it took him three years. For the first three years of his side hustle, he reinvested in his business. Be open to opportunity. He didn't turn down jobs - even if he didn't want to do it. This makes him appreciate it when "dream jobs" come along. Get your mind right. When he panics, finds himself envious of others, he is not doing his best work. This hurts his business. Dave's Insights If you don't have a good support system, things can get ugly quickly. People I see who have made the leap ALL have supportive families. ALL. It's not enough to take courses, you have to leave time to put the knowledge into action. For consulting on planning, launching, and growing your podcast see www.podcastconsultant.com

I saw a post on a Facebook Group: Lila Donnolo This is a sample of it Now Patreon says they have transferred processing pledges for their "adult" creators overseas, where there will be an extra processing fee. Patreon already takes a substantial cut of our earnings, credit card companies take a cut, and now we will get hit (again!) with processing fees. My account is NOW FROZEN AGAIN. I cannot access my funds from last month, and no new pledges can be made. I am losing potential income, especially since so many more people have been made aware of my podcast after my traveling adventures. While I was at Burning Man and without access to my email, Patreon's "Trust and Safety" team sent me warnings about "nudity or implied nudity" in my publicly available Patreon posts. IMPLIED nudity?!!!! IMPLIED NUDITY. I'm really not sure what they were referring to. When they didn't hear back from me (again, because I was at Burning Man and offline), they "temporarily suspended" my account. This was 12 days ago. 11 days ago I began the laborious process of making all of my posts - containing anything that a prudish company might delineate as "sensitive" - patrons-only. I also wrote 11 days ago to the "Trust and Safety" person who contacted me, Hunter, asking him to please reinstate my account. As of today, I have received no response. I've reached out through email twice now, and through the website once. There is no customer service number that I am aware of. I want all of us "adult" creators to be served well by our patronage service. Since that's not happening, I suggest that we take our business elsewhere. BUT WHERE? Thus far, my earnings from Patreon only cover 1/3rd of my editor's fee each month, but: they cover 1/3rd of my editor's fee, and that is meaningful to me. And then There is Cum Town I randomly came across the Cum Town podcast. I might like the show if I was a 22-year-old male. I reviewed it on my Podcast Rodeo show. It wasn't horrible. I'm not a prude, but it seemed a bit too loose and unorganized for me. One of their subscribers left a comment on the post The post showed that they were making $450,000 a year. They have (as of 9/2018) 8463 patrons and making $37,970 a month (or $455,640 a year). What floors me about this, is their listing in Apple podcasts points to the wrong site. Their website is www.cum.town.com and their Apple listing has it pointing to http://shoutengine.com/CumTown/ which makes me scratch my head (as they could be doing so much more).

There are two different types of surveys in my opinion. There are surveys where you ask your audience about them (that is often used in a media kit) and the other survey where you ask them about your show. Sponsor: Thrive Themes. Conversion Focused WordPress Themes & Plugins see www.morepodcastmoney.com/thrive Audience Surveys About Them This is the survey that you need demographics. So this might be things like: Age Sex Education Income Location Race Marital Status Total household income Do you own or rent Do you have children What products do you plan on purchasing in the future What was the last product you purchased Audience Surveys About You How did you hear about the show? How do you listen to podcasts? How many episodes have you listened to? Where do you listen to the podcast Opinion on Length of Show Opinion on ads What is their Favorite thing about the show What is their least Favorite What would you like to see on the show How likely are you to tell a friend How much of the episode do you listen to? Add Information About Podcasting In some cases, this may be the first time someone is spending advertising money on a podcast. You can find great stats about the podcast industry and the podcast consumer at www.edisonresearch.com Tips on Making Podcast Surveys If you do anything with ratings, make the rating system even. For example on a scale from 1-4 where four is perfect and one is awful, how would you rate the length of this show? Why even? because if it was 1-5, you could choose three which is right in the center. When the numbers are even, the audience member has to pick a little better or a little worse. Give them a bribe. I've heard of people doing surveys who say when they get X amount responses they will pull one lucky winner and they will win an Amazon GIft certificate. I once gave away a year subscription at the School of Podcasting. The bottom line is you will get 3% of your audience if you are lucky so you need a bribe. Another key point if you are asking about the length of the podcast, you can't announce the survey at the end of the show (as anyone who thought it was too long has already stopped listening). I have a friend who works for Gallop (you know, the polling people) and he says having more than 15 questions is a waste of time. With this in mind, figure out what you really want to know and ask those questions. Survey Resources There are places like Survey Monkey, and Poll Daddy, but for me, I like the free Google Forms. You can create your own questions, and then download the answers in a spreadsheet. You are not limited to any number of responses or questions.

I see people who think the "Holy Grail" of podcasting is sponsorship. Now I have sponsors on my show, but when I listen to The Feed From Podcast Media Host Libsyn.com that less than 10% of podcasters get 5,000 downloads or more (as of May 2018). But, what if you did. An old holdover from the radio is selling advertisements by the download. CPM stands for the price for 10000 downloads. These range from $20-%50. So for this example let's use $35/1000 downloads. One episode a week (four episodes a month). That means (5000 downloads multiplied by 4 weeks) you have 20,000 downloads per month. If you multiply 20,000 by .035 (which is $35/1000 to get the price of a single download) and you end up with $700 for the month ($175/episode). Now, this is great if this is a side hustle, but if you're trying to feed a family making $8,400 a YEAR is an issue. What makes it worse, is that some "Everybody gets a sponsor" companies that use Dynamic Ad Injection are paying $1.50 for 1000 downloads (and no that is not a typo - more on that in a later episode). Let's Look at Two Highly Successful Podcast Income Reports I decided to look at the breakdown of two highly successful podcasters. John Lee Dumas, and Pat Flynn (who both publish their income reports). I used the latest reports available. For John, that was April 2018. For Pat that was December 2017. John Lee Dumas April 2017 Podcast Income Report Pat Flynn December 2017 Podcast Income Report Combine The Two Reports My point is that podcast sponsorship should be one of the ways and not THE way to "break out of the 9 to 5 cubical. Today we look at one more way that is come on the horizon to make money with your podcast. When you are popular enough you can host live events where you record your show and your audience can come and watch you do this live. You can sell t-shirts and other merchandise. Pod Save America (www.crooked.com) is on tour and I checked out their ticket prices and their locations. Byham Theater in Pittsburg Sold Out 1313 Tickets start at $40 1313 X $40 = $52,520 They have two nights you at Radio City Music Hall in NYC Capacity of Radio City Music Call 6,015 6015 X $40 = $240,600 for one night Now don't go crazy this is not profit (you have travel, food, equipment expenses) but none the less this is another option where you can make money with your podcast. One thing that can happen "Because of Your Podcast" is you can end up with free stuff. There are some tips to pull this off. Quick Tip : Do not contact the sales department - it is their job to SELL you their product. Contact the marketing department - it is their job to get their product exposure and you have their target audience. Sometimes this requires giving a credit card number (to ensure you give it back), but there are times they will let you keep it. I always lead by asking to try the product and send it back. I always let them know that I reserve the right to create a negative review (and most companies want to hear constructive feedback). For me, the microphone I use today is an Electrovoice RE320. I got it by filling out the paperwork. When I went to return it, they offered to "barter" to have me keep it. I talked about it on my School of Podcasting show for a month, and I got to keep it. It saved me $300. Glenn Hebert runs the Horse Radio Network (the new version of More Podcast Mone coming out later this year will have an entire chapter on Glenn "the Geek" Hebert. In today's show, Glenn talks about a new show he is doing called " Finding Florida " and how he and his co-host got a TON of free stuff, and nobody asked about their numbers. Patreon currently is one of the most popular crowdfunding platforms. For me, they take about 5%. With some creators, it can get closer to 10%. You can set different levels of supporting you with each level having their own reward. Here are some tips on creating rewards: Make sure they benefit the patron - not you Be careful with physical items as podcasting is a global audience Make sure you still deliver value, and that that fulfillment won't damage your original product Some things to consider are you might offer engagement where you do private webinars for members only. Some people offer to spotlight their "Fan of the week/month" Insights into the creative process, so notes, sketches, demos. There is a reason lyrics on napkins are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So you want rewards that benefit the audience, but don't lead you to burn out. If I Can Get 50% Of My Audience I Will be Rich You have 500 downloads an episode and you think that you can get 250 of them to donate $10 a month that would be $2500 a month or $30,000 a year. The bad news is you may get 3% if you're luck7 and the average contribution is $3 so you have 15 patrons for a total of $45 a month. I say this not to dash your dreams, but more so you don't quit your day job without knowing the facts. Tom Boruta runs a website called Graphtreon where he tracks how much people make no Patreon. According to a post on theoutline.com "Boruta’s numbers are based on the roughly 80 percent of creators who publicly share what they earn. Of those creators, only 1,393 — 2 percent — make the equivalent of the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, or $1,160 a month, in October 2017. That same article (Titled No One Makes a Living On Patreon) stated "In 2016, Patreon boasted that 7,960 users were now making over $100 a month, which struck me as such an insignificant monthly income to brag about. Around the same time, the company reportedly had 25,000 creators, meaning only 31 percent of Patreon’s users were making over a hundred bucks." Last month I made $254 on Patreon. They took $11.19 and left me with $230.11. I work about 20 hours per month on that show which means I make $11.50 which is higher than the current National Minimum wage of $7.25 That is before taxes. If I set aside 30% for taxes, that makes my "take home" 161.77. Using that number I make $8.05/hour. In 2016 there was a private Patrecon where 40 Patreon creators attended. At that event, founder Jack Conte stated, "the Importance of making great stuff." https://youtu.be/zBSOLTlRPoE In this video, Jack points out how he spent a ton of time on creating a video that cost $10,000 and it made him $200. This is what inspired him to start Patreon. Dig Deeper I see where the Deep Fat Fried Podcast just started their Patreon in January of 2018 and already have 500 patrons. If you dig deeper you also see they have 24,000 YouTube Subsc

We previously talked about the different ways to make money with your podcast. For me, let's get something clear. Most people do NOT make money from their podcast. Their podcast is a marketing arm of their business that builds a relationship with their audience. Rob Walch the VP of Podcaster Relations shares stats about their network in their podcast The Feed, and in their January 6th episode he mentions that only 7% of podcasters get enough downloads for a "Major" sponsor. Yet, so many podcasters dream of starting a podcast and getting a sponsor. If we do the math that means that 92% of them will not reach their goal. But this doesn't mean you can't get a sponsor. I just got a sponsor for my School of Podcasting show. Who is the sponsor? A Podcast event called Podcast Movement. Why did they sponsor my show? Because I have their target audience. The key here is I have a very specific audience: podcasters. The more niche you are the better pay you can get for a sponsor. Glen Hebert of the Horse Radio Network talks about how a company that produces electronic pitch forks (Used for cleaning out horse stalls) couldn't sell his product. He had advertisements in magazines, but it wasn't helping to push his product. Here is how you find a sponsor. Deliver value to your podcast Grow your audience (this takes time) Call a publication that has the same audience and see how much it is to advertise in their publication Call the people who are actually advertising in these publications and offer them a better deal.

Today we are looking at how podcasting helps your audience: Know you Like you Trust you When they do those things, do you know what else they do? They BUY stuff from you! Bill Strand from http://www.chameleonbreeder.com/ will buy cages that are more expensive than his competition, but they buy HIS cages because they want to support him Today I play a clip from Hall of Fame Podcaster Gary Leland of www.fastpitchradio.com on how he no longer spends money on Google Adwords. Gary created the show his target audience wanted to hear and Gary is his own sponsor. John Dennis got so many leads (GIANT LEADS) from his Smart Time Online podcast, he had to quick his podcast! I got great feedback on a product that is going to allow me to create a NEW product to meet a segment of my audience Keep in mind you need to deliver value. Nobody tunes into an infomercial on purpose and it is way too easy to tune out of a podcast the minute you waste their time. Ready to Start Podcasting? Let's say you have a product that is meant for people who participate in Triathalons. You could exercise in Fitness Magazines, Biking magazine, Weight Lifting Magazines, TV, but you're hoping that the tri-athlete is maybe watching or reading one of those items. While more people listen to radio than a podcast, each year radio listening is going down and podcast listening is going up. With a radio station, you can only reach as far as your signal. You might say, "But hey Dave I can get my station on the iHeart Radio App." This is true, but when you go to listen in the car you are streaming the show, chewing up your phone's data package. With a podcast, you can download the file to your phone while you're on wi-fi at home and then listen to the episode without chewing up your data. Radio and Newspaper people will ask, "But how do we know if they are listening?" To that, I want to say, "How do I know if someone saw the story on page 6? Here is a fun fact, in the Apple Podcasts app if you don't listen to any of the last five episodes of a podcast it will stop downloading it. How many listeners would radio have if they missed five programs in a row, or how many subscribers have if every page wasn't read? People in the media who are afraid of podcasting taking over their territory (rightfully so by the way) try to hold podcasting to standards that they themselves couldn't pass. There is no spam in podcasting. If you don't want any more information from me, with a single swipe and click you are done getting content from me. I canceled my SiriusXM subscription last week. I go through periods where I will subscribe and then unsubscribe. I've been through this routine. They ask me why and try to give me a huge discount, and give you time to second-guess your decision. There is no second-guessing in my scenario. I know the drill. I told this to my support person and still, they read off their cards and try to sell me and get me to stay. This annoyed me so much I may NEVER go back. The Power of the NIche What if spending all that money on magazines, radio, and TV you started a podcast like http://triathletetraining.com/ where this podcast is designed specifically for people who are tri-athletes. Now because of the niche of this podcast their audience will be smaller than a general weight loss show, but the audience will be more engaged because the audience is thinking, "Oh man, I thought I was the only person into this, and they will download your back catalog." Subscribe to the show in iTunes or Android and get the next episode as soon as its ready, or buy the book More Podcast Money on Amazon today.
