Ugh, are we talking about Elon AGAIN? Well, yeah, but he's running so spectacularly wild, it reminds us of the joke about a horse wreaking havoc in a hospital. There's no protocol, so I guess we're all just watching. Blue checks backfired again with the fake Eli Lilly account Tweeting "Insulin is free," shining a big light on two things: That the pay-to-be-verified-on-Twitter plan is trash and, most importantly, that price gouging insulin to the tune of 1,200 percent is ethically barren. Next on deck is a big nasty: The Wall Street Journal reports that a U.S. taxpayer is facing a fine of $2.72 million for failing to submit a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts--also known as FBAR. The stinger? The taxpayer in question didn't even OWE any taxes on those assets; this is literally just a penalty. Good luck, fella. Meanwhile, pay transparency laws are going into effect in NYC to help narrow the income gap across gender and ethnic lines. All together now: Equal work, equal pay! Happy Halloween, dear finance fans! This week, we have some scary cool tech topics to discuss, starting with Amazon's frightening freefall in talent retention. The en vogue expression for when someone is fired from a company? "We call that unregretted attrition," says Amazon via leaked documents. Read: Addition by subtraction. Pro-tip, Amazon: If you don't hire to nurture, employees are going to leave. Boom, solved Amazon's people problem! Speaking of problems, court challenges are hanging up student loan forgiveness a bit. Insiders say to still submit your relief application, though. In other news, Twitter's workforce is fed up with Elon Musk already. Will he drop his projected 5,600 jobs? Will a privately-owned Twitter become the digital badlands? We don't know! And freaking finally...an IPO we can get excited about. Mobileye slid into the market above its estimated trade price, which bodes well for market health. Will we be autonomous on the road by 2025? Probably not. Trick or treat: Home sales are down while interest rates soar. Scary. Last up is a scary moment for T-Swift fans when her new album broke Spotify last week. Listen... if you dare! Remember the ice bucket challenge for ALS research back in 2014? On this special episode of the show, our hosts are in Portland, Oregon on the semi-annual Brooklyn FI company retreat. Let’s be honest, our hosts are having too much fun. The IPO market continues to be soft and the stock market is experiencing volatility that reminds some pundits of the March 2020 dip. We’ve got Elon and Twitter, a very generous gift from Snapchat founder Evan Spiegal, and a man who has been to every country in the world and also to outer space. In this extra-long episode of The Liquidity Event, our hosts find themselves down a Bitcoin rabbit hole. There’s the news that a stable coin that was supposed to be stable took a fantastic dive and created panic amongst investors. Not a good look. We’ve got not one, but two electric vehicle companies going public this week. These are small fish compared to Tesla and Rivian, but mighty nonetheless. Shane is mad that AJ blew up his spot about his X Box but she’s also riled up about some early 2000s children’s video game called Neopets. We’ve got a big olde IPO in Bausch + Lomb, the eyecare supplier that will forever make contact lens wearers buy those stupid tiny travel-sized bottles.
