After working a while as a nurse, Mallori came home full time when her daughter was born. We talk about the challenges of going from 2 incomes to 1 and the importance of a budget that both husband and wife can faithfully participate in. We discuss unrealistic expectations for postpartum life (based on social media comparison) as well as our tendency to overcorrect one way or the other with the “Just a homemaker” and “superwoman” mentalities. This is a lovely conversation filled with all the usual stories of Mallori’s influences, strengths & weknesses, wins, fails, and favorite resources. She is an inspiration to me as I am a brand new homemaker and I believe her wisdom will be a blessing to many others." I am so thankful that Sydney nominated her mom, Heather Price, who has been keeping a home full time for 30 years with her husband. In preparation for that journey, I wanted to revisit the first three pillars in several series of Monday Motivation episodes. I've given you some possible scenarios. Note what emotions come up as you consider these hypothetical threats and losses. Then ask yourself, "Why? Why do I feel _______ facing this particular threat?" Once you have your answer, ask again, "But Why?" Keep asking "why" until you get to the heart of the matter. Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. First, I am chatting with ANOTHER Scottish homemaker, Jillian Johnson. Technically, she was raised in Canada by Scottish parents, she moved to Belfast, Ireland for midwifery school where she met a dashing Scottish medical student who was raised in England. They got married, had a baby, and now make their home in Scotland. We have the most delightful conversation about Jillian’s experience as a newbie homemaker, wife and mom. I adore her sense of humor and found myself smiling and laughing all over again as I did the editing of her segment. Then I chat with Anna Murphy who stayed home for about 5 years with her daughter then taught school for 12 years before returning home full time in 2020. The Lord really changed Anna’s perspective about the importance of homemaking to draw her back home just in time for those crucial years of helping her teen daughter see the value in homemaking. With both of these ladies, we cover all the usual territory of strengths, weaknesses, expectations, fails, wins, resources and more. Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. I realize for some believers this holiday is off limits due to their past and or their conscience before the Lord. I respect that because, while we all have freedom in Christ, each one of us should do as the Holy Spirit directs us. If that's you, feel free to skip this episode. For those of you who are on the fence or haven’t really considered how Christians should think about Halloween, I'd like to present one perspective in today's episode. Is this really "the devil's day" and are we violating scripture by handing out candy? It is my prayer that this episode will encourage you to fear not, but rather seek the Lord's will for your family's participation (or not) in Halloween. I am also giving some practical suggestions for fun couples and family costumes as well as my (new) favorite fall candies. 🎃 “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” -John 1:5 EPISODE NOTES & LINKS Fall Favorites: Clean Candy Unreal Coconut Bars YumEarth lollipops and hard candy ChocXO Cups Halloween Hospitality Scripture References Hebrews 2:14-15 1 Peter 5:8 John 1:5 2 Timothy 1:7 Proverbs 19:23 "Halloween and Christians: An Opportunity with Jimmy and Kelly Needham," Family Life Today Podcast, October 4, 2024 Apple | Spotify Newsletter Series on Acts of Courageous Homemaking #1 Be Informed by Trusted Sources Support the show HOMEMAKING RESOURCES Free Weekly Newsletter, Homemaker Happy Mail Private Facebook Group, Homemaker Forum <a href='https://www.the

First I am chatting with Maryela Soto-Portillo who has been keeping a home for 15 years. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in New Jersey, she now makes a home in Florida with her husband, 2 children, and her mother. Maryela works part time, homeschools her children and has dreams of opening a homeschool co-op to help other busy moms make homeschooling work for their families. Then, I visit with Amanda Faucett who has been keeping a home with husband, James, for 23 years. She just launched her son from the nest and will be launching her daughter in less than 2 years. Amanda and I have a great conversation about living in a somewhat politically divided home. It’s not a topic that comes up often, but it is her experience and she has some great insights to share. I will also be sharing a couple answers from last Monday's question of the week about favorite fiction books and giving you my answer to that question. Today's episode is a companion to our recent deep dive on the informed homemaker which is all about making sense of what is happening in the world and our culture with eyes of faith through a Biblical worldview lens. Of course going right to the source and studying scripture itself is the best policy, but what about companion resources such as devotionals, Bible focused podcasts, Bible study books, online sermons, other Christian publications, YouTube channels, etc? How to we know who to trust? Is there a way to tell whether or not a preacher or publication is biblically sound? That is what we are discussing today as we look at the example of a group of believers from the New Testament called the Bereans. As part of our season-long exploration of courageous homemaking we are going to tackle the topic of world news, events and culture. How do we navigate all of that responsibly without fear, fighting or checking out completely and what does all of this have to do with courageous homemaking? My discussion partner today is Isa Ryan, a homemaker and writer who grew up with a very progressive paradigm and no concept of biblical femininity. As a follower of Christ, she now champions God's design for men, women and the family in her writing and her interactions on social media. Just remember, it's not really about the end result, it's the process and the memory you are making of being creative together. She was nominated by her friend Tina Bergs. Here’s what Tina had to say about Alecia’s practice of the art of home: "Alecia makes her home a place where children are nurtured in the love of Christ and pointed to what is true, good, and beautiful. She is a welcoming hostess who intentionally uses her home as a place where souls can find rest, and be met with the love of Christ." After spending an hour or so in conversation with Alecia, I can see why Tina gave such a glowing recommendation. Alecia has such great insight into the art of home. She poignantly explains that homemaking is a beautiful, hard, sanctifying, creative adventure; a high and holy calling which, if we allow, God will use to draw us to himself and transform us into the image of Jesus so that the Gospel will be displayed through our homemaking. Then we look at motivations (or the why) for establishing rhythms and routines, contrasting the world’s ideas vs what God has to say about our why. Next we talk about 4 rhythms of christian living; worship, rest, work and play—what those might look like and how we can use homemaking to help and not hinder these rhythms. Finally we end with a few pitfalls to avoid when establishing rhythms and routines. Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. In today’s episode I am chatting with in-the-trenches homemaker, Carly Poulin. Carly blew me away on her application when she shared that God used the art of home podcast to draw her to himself and now she is walking with the Lord. I never intended for this to be an evangelistic podcast but it is because we talk about what it looks like to follow Jesus in the midst of laundy and dishes and diapers, and raising toddlers and teenagers, and showing hospitality. The idea that the Creator of the universe meets us in the mundane and gives us all that we need to walk out our faith and glorify Him through the every day work of homemaking is revolutionary in our culture. The stories we tell here about how Jesus transforms our homemaking were literally life-changing for Carly…her words, not mine. So keep that in mind as you listen. Carly is a new believer. She is learning and growing and fighting the good fight….shortly before we did this interview she unexpectedly lost her father and that threatened to shake her brand new faith. But God has been with her and I hope you will join me in praying for Carly’s faith to be strengthened, that she will be a light to her family as she serves them, and that God would bring some Titus 2 women into her life. Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. In today’s episode I am talking with In-the-Trenches homemaker, Naomi Fata. She’s been married 16 years and has 3 kids, ages 8 to 13. She homeschools and runs a sewing and alterations business out of her home--she is a very busy lady. We discuss how she has learned/is learning to balance homemaking, schooling and a home business through compromise, firm boundaries and letting go of some expectations. Naomi is passionate about teaching others how sewing can help them make the most of their clothing and home decor resources. Over the years, Naomi realized that this "stay-at-home dream life" she asked God for does not come with ease. It is challenging to manage it all, but she is learning to differentiate between what God has and has not called her to do in each new day. Whether running a home business or not, this principle applies to all of us as homemakers as we seek to thrive in our calling and not be distracted or overwhelmed by all the possibilities before us. I know you will be encouraged and learn something from Naomi's story of home. Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. Today's installment of this Summer Reading Re-Run: Ch. 4 "The Parent's Part" and Ch. 5 "The Children's Part" In chapter 4, Miller explores the parent's role in creating both physical and emotional home environments in which children will thrive. In chapter 5, he gives wisdom concerning how children can learn to honor their parents by learning to confide in them, to live for others rather than self, to practice thoughtfulness and to share in the housekeeping. The Art of Home is taking a break for the beginning of summer 2023. That gives you an opportunity to catch up on old episodes or join in for another round of reading and studying JR Miller's classic, Homemaking, published in 1882. For the next five weeks your host, Allison, will read two chapters from this short book. To help you retain and apply the timeless lessons of Rev. Miller, The Art of Home has created a free study guide for each chapter. Use the link below to receive your downloadable, printable copy. They are past the newlywed stage and are working through how to prioritize marriage amidst a houseful of kids, schooling, activities, their husband’s career, and more. Life is busy and demands their constant attention in this stage. Kelly is no exception, but her approach to this busy season is refreshing. Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. In today’s episode I am talking with seasoned homemaker, Adrienne Schrank, about her experience of keeping home for the past 34 years with husband, Ron. Adrienne is a born administrator, a trait which has served her well in the organizing and time management side of homemaking but has sometimes been an obstacle to relationships. Adrienne has had to learn that she is not called to “admin people” but to love them and take part in God’s work of shaping hearts.
