Transition can be tough for both humans and animals. At the start of the pandemic, I wrote an article, "How Isolation will Affect your Dog." It was a guide to ensure our pups didn't get too used to use being home, since return to work seemed like it was just around the corner. Here we are 2 years later.... Who would have guessed it?! Now that our dogs have gotten used to us being around all day, some of us are facing a transition back to working outside of the home again. The pandemic interrupted our normal work schedules and a lot of dogs got used to us being home 24/7, which may have felt like they scored, but now that’s about to change again. So, how will it impact your dog when you go back to working outside of the home? Winter can be tough to get through some years, but since hibernation is simply not an option for most of us, we have to make the most of it. Winter with a young dog or a dog in training can be even more challenging, but there are lots of great tips on how you can continue to work and train your dog, even when it's too frigid to go outdoors. We typically don't know what our next podcast will be. Often, it's simply a reaction to something that's hit us in our day-to-day life. Like an interaction with a student or a sentiment that seems to permeate the dog community. These things are often ones that resonate with us in some way. We love it when something hits us in just such a way that it challenges something we believe and we have to open our minds to new possibilities. This is truly how we grow! We’ve all heard the phrases “emotional control” and “self-control” in dog training. Many people assume that this only applies to the dog. But, when you think about it, it should go both ways. We expect our dogs to be able to control their emotions and impulses in all sorts of different scenarios. But are we, as their trainers, able to do the same? Dog parks have really become a big deal. They are used daily by hundreds of families with dogs. They romp, run, play and wrestle. Sometimes, they just hang out. It often reminds me of McDonald's Play Place. Throw a bunch of random kids together and they're bound to hit it off, right? As a child, it was my favourite restaurant to eat in. A Kid's Meal with a toy and a place to play with bouncy horses, ball pits, Merry-Go-Rounds, and slides. McDonalds knew that if they built it, the kids would come - and the kids would bring their family! It was brilliant marketing on their part. The kids, after all, are typically the ones who get to choose where. The parents were happy because after eating, they got to chat while the kids played in the little windowed cell - safe and contained. What kid wouldn't love it at the Play Place? Well, there are some. The ones who get bullied by other kids. The ones who get hurt. As a kid, I remember an incident where I was pushed from behind by a child on the slide. I didn't know him. I wasn't sure if he was impatient and I was taking too long or if he truly was looking to bully me. All I know is I ended up with a goose egg on my head and a fat lip where I bit down hard. My mom came running in to help me and after attending to my immediate needs, she turned to find both child and parent had vanished. They were nowhere to be seen. That was early on in the days when McDonalds first realized that marketing to children was beneficial. We saw exciting colours and fun and wanted to be part of it! We didn't have access to the information we do now. We made decisions based on different factors back then - the Play Place seemed safe and magical! Fast forward to today and the accessibility of details at your fingertips. Google "Play Place Accidents". I got almost 5 million results in less than one second! Now, I'm quite certain that not all 5 million results are horrific incidents, but likely, a few of them are. Now Google "Dog Park Accidents".McDonald's Not quite as big a list at 1.5 million, but still a lot of incidents includiing Spectator articles about dogs being killed. We don't recommend the traditional use of Dog Parks. With the lack of structure and complete anonymity, it can be a powder keg just waiting for a spark. With the stories that we are privy to, we know that it's not worth the risk. None of our staff would ever go to one. Check with any vet and I'm quite certain that they've all seen tremendous injury as a result of Leash-Free Dog Parks as well. So, the question is, are you willing to take the risk? There are, of course, a balance of facts. Probably most days go by without incident at the Dog Park. With a little planning and some rules to follow, it can be a fun experience. So, how do you decide if the risk is worth it? I would break it down to the points we talk about in this episode. Here's a link to our YouTube channel for more training tips: <a href="ht

Introducing a second dog to your home can be a wonderful experience. It is also a crucial time to set the foundation for your puppy training! I made a BIG mistake when it came to training my second dog. By not showing the puppy that I was worth listening to, the puppy quickly started to find everything in the world a lot more interesting. This made my training experience A LOT more difficult. And I had to work harder to teach my puppy that she needed to listen even when there were other dogs around! Today I thought we'd do something different. Today, we're going to play a game. It's easy - here's how it works: Assign yourself 1 point for each entry you've accomplished. This topic came up in our My Dog Can Online Training community group and I knew right away it would make a great article. I also knew right away that it would likely be a controversial one with strong beliefs on both sides of the argument, but I still pose the question: Should you let your dog play with other dogs? As with most posts I write, there is no black and white answer and my goal is to present the arguments, not to decide for you. So, let's go! “Success is never owned, it is rented, and the rent is due every day.” — Rory Vaden I love this quote by Rory Vaden. It fits training a dog so well, how could we possibly think about it any differently now that we've thought of it in that context? I have to put in effort EVERY day in order to have success. Right! Got it..... Except... How does one measure success? Often as humans, we can only focus on the end stage, the BIG picture - the SUCCESS, and we think about the final product as our measure of success. This often leaves us throwing our hands up in frustration when we don't achieve it overnight or when we're confused about how to get from A to Z? What about the other 24 stepping stone letters? Think about dropping a child off for their first day of Kindergarten. If the only measure of success is a University Degree, you'll feel like a failure pretty quickly. So let's break things down into bite-sized chunks of information and what better way to do that than with an acronym? I love acronyms and here is another good one for remembering what's important when working with your dog: Your role in helping your dog learn is to C.A.R.E. Some debates are timeless, spanning decades and centuries. One debate where there's no denying the waters run deep is Nature VS Nurture and which might be driving behavior. Trying to discern the role of both when sharing time and space with beings of the 4-legged variety can be astounding when you take a deep dive. Bribe VS Reward - how to successfully teach a skill using food without making your dog dependent on it! Dog Bribe = relying on showing your dog food in order to get a response. What's the problem? If the thing your dog wants to do is more motivating than your food, you lose! Dog Reward = the paycheck that comes AFTER the dog has responded successfully to a cue you've previously taught. Dog Lure = Using food for a SHORT period of time in the beginning stages of teaching a skill to show the dog what you expect. Knowing how and when to use and remove food is important for sustained reliability. If food is removed too early, the skill won't have enough reinforcement history to stand on its own. If done too late, your dog may become dependent on seeing the food in your hand to understand the cue. Is your pup SWEET as pie when they have a special, valued item? GOOD! Keep reading.... This article is STILL for you!!! It truly seems like things come in themes in dogdom. I think this is a combination of the ever-evolving role of dogs in our lives and the awareness that society dedicates to a specific theme or problem. One theme that seems to be common at the moment is dogs showing specifically targeted possession or 'resource guarding' of valuable items. Things like real bones, bully sticks, rawhides (please note that we don't recommend rawhide due to the inherent dangers associated with it) are very valuable items to most dogs. When introduced properly, they can be a wonderful treat for your dog without being dangerous. We've been so busy with COVID-related concerns, that it's taken a back seat, but I was inspired this morning when answering daily questions in our Puppy Essentials Online Training program. There was a common theme about trying to help puppies overcome noise. Pups were presented with 'the noisy thing' (hair dryer, sander, loud truck, etc.) and frightened by it. Then the question of how to acclimate. Well, it is truly putting the cart before the horse to present the scary thing, scare the pup with it and then try to reverse that fear, so let’s talk about how to introduce things in a way that we’ll avoid that fate. Raising a puppy definitely requires the gift of foresight to do perfectly. We don't always know that there will be a loud truck or a crack of thunder or a sudden fireworks display, so we can forgive ourselves when we are caught unaware by things outside of our control The rest of it, you’re not off of the hook for. Anything predictable, like turning on a hairdryer or a set of clippers to trim a coat, should be approached delicately with the assumption that it will frighten a youngster without experience with it. If it seems like it might be scary for them, it is likely a safe assumption that it will be, so take your time and plan. Do not flood your puppy Here's a link to our YouTube channel for more training tips: https://www.youtube.com/mccanndogs We Have A FULLY SUPPORTED Puppy Essentials Training Program Online! You've heard us say it many times I'm sure: training mode is a hoax! That's because dogs are ALWAYS learning. They don't shut off when the bell rings for recess. Their existence and experiences will mold their behavior. They are learning ALL of the time! Does that sound exhausting? We've spent decades refining the training process and while it's important to strap on the bait pouch and do some dog training, what you do outside of 'training mode' is equally important. Dogs need a lot of successful repetition in any skill across multiple environments to truly understand what we expect from them. That could really eat up your time, but there are some EASY ways to get in more reps outside of your formal training sessions. The added benefit to reinforcing your dog's training in their day-to-day life is that they'll learn to listen to you all of the time, not just when you're in training mode. So, what are these easy ways to train we're talking about? Let's jump in! The world needs more dog training acronyms, don't you think?! I always find them helpful for remembering ordered steps, so coming up with one to help dog owners STOP unwanted behavior was important. Conveniently, the only things you'll ever need to know to address an average unwanted behavior, like pulling, for example, are contained in the acronym S.T.O.P. Let's talk about pulling on the leash as an example of a behavior you may not like. How can you address it? Just S.T.O.P. it! It really is that simple. There's not much in the world that's more important than teaching your dog to come when called. A dog who comes when called is a dog who can be kept safe in a world full of danger. If you've ever been in a situation where your recall literally saved your dog's life, you'll know exactly what I mean. Yes, it can be a LIFESAVER, but the real magic in a great recall is much more evident in day-to-day life. Being able to allow your dog the freedom of an off-leash romp while knowing that you can safely and efficiently call them back or feeling secure that you can open your front door without the risk of your dog running onto the road. These are the more obvious gifts that effort put into creating a GREAT recall will deliver! We often use the analogy with my students that training skills in the face of distractions is akin to trying to learn calculus on a roller coaster at Disney World. It would take a very seasoned math whiz to be able to focus on math during SUCH exciting times. The same is true of our dogs. Trying to teach them new skills when they are over faced with excitement will likely increase the frustration level for you both, but won't likely help them learn what you'd like. We know that one dog is wonderful, so 2 must be double the wonderful, right? Three = triple the fun!!! True? From this dog trainer's perspective, YOU BET YOUR BOOTIE it is! .....but it's not entirely free of complications that could make it less than wonderful. A single dog in the home will act one way. 2 dogs in the home will change things a bit. 3 or more and you're dealing with a whole other set of dogdom rules - this is the point you'll really see a need for management in a multi-dog household! The GOOD news is, a bit of foresight and a few key rules can make all the difference when trying to keep the peace. Whether you have 2 dogs or 20, there are some simple ways to ensure it stays wonderful when one is not enough. Having the dog you have always wanted takes a little work. And it's not just the training. After listening to this episode, I want you to think about how you can apply these to your current dog in training. Here's a link to the infographic: https://mccanndogs.com/blog-page/339-the-trouble-with-enrichment (M)anage - keep them safe and direct their behaviour in your absence (E)ngage - out of their crate, engage with them in training or other activities that benefit (E)nrich - tug and play or fun snuggles are very enriching things that can work in your favour (T)each - teach them skills to help them learn WHAT we want (I)nsist - mean what you say and find ways to gently insist (it’s not about force, it’s about consistency) (N)ew Challenges - Once you’ve trained the skills in a quiet environment, add distractions and challenges incrementally (G)eneralize - get out to different locations/expose to different situations to help them understand your expectations Here's a link to our YouTube channel for more training tips: https://www.youtube.com/mccanndogs We Have A FULLY SUPPORTED Puppy Essentials Training Program Online! Puppy training requires a little bit of variety. There is a surge of new puppy ownership and lots of people welcoming new four-legged family members into their homes. In our dog training school, we get to see hundreds of dogs every week, and in our weekly meetings, our trainers can often notice trends when it comes to dogs. Whether the trend is a specific breed of puppy, or a new dog training toy, with the number of dog owners who come through our facility, these trends are easy to spot. The same thing goes for training issues. In the last couple of weeks, our training facility has reopened, and we are welcoming hundreds of new dog owners in for training. After speaking with a few of our trainers, there is something that they have noticed with a number of dogs who came to their homes during quarantine. There's a lot of talk in the dog world about about the sniff walk and why you should let your dog sniff on their walks. So is this sage advice? Should you simply allow your dog to do what they'd like on walks so they are enriched? Will our dogs only enjoy their walks if we let them sniff the entire time? As with most things in dogdom, there is no right or wrong answer, but rather how you might decide what the right choice is for YOUR dog. As usual, there are valid arguments on both sides of the equation, so the decision should be weighed thoroughly and then made by each individual dog owner. There is rarely, if ever, a one-size-fits-all solution in dogs, so let's answer today's question after we talk through a few of the arguments. When is it okay to allow sniffing and when is it not? Enrichment is a big buzz word in the Dog Training community. We're seeing all sorts of new and fun ways to bring enrichment to our dogs life. Snuffle matts and ball pits and specially designed toys... the list goes on. Some schools even offer entire classes filled with these enrichment games. Enrichment is wonderful if it's used right. When people come to us asking for help with a skill they're struggling with, we can often find a step that has been left out in their training plan. As humans, it can be hard for us to understand how dogs think simply because it is different than how we think, and it can be hard to understand why you might have a perfect recall in your yard, only to watch your dog ignore you at the park. Today, we're going to talk about the steps necessary to train and perfect a skill from start to finish using our favourite acronym - "T.R.A.I.N." The "App" is like the modern version of, "Better living through Chemistry." Our lives are constantly being simplified by technology. Need an answer? Just ask Google. Need a ride? Pull up the Uber App. Want Groceries? No problem! There are many apps for convenience these days and if you want to hire a Dog Walker/Sitter, well there's an app for that too. Couldn't be easier, right?!? But convenience is not without its costs. Just look at how many times Uber has been in the news over driver's acting inappropriately. No surprise, there are stories hitting the news with similar implications when dealing with dog sitters and walkers. This begs the question: What is the price of convenience? There are 175 breeds recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). That's a lot of different dogs! For anyone looking for a dog, there's little question you can find a breed that you will love within the seven groups. But how do you choose the right breed for you? What should you do to ensure the dog you've chosen will be a good match for your lifestyle? Choosing on looks alone may set you up for a heartbreak. Shelters are full of animals that, for one reason or another, didn't fit into the homes they found themselves. All too often, this is because of too little research and too much impulse. So how do you narrow it down to the right choice for you? It amazes me how small our world is these days. If your message is strong enough, it can easily make its way around the world, which makes for a lot of power and a lot of responsibility. The power is in the message, the responsibility is in the user validating that message. Unfortunately, responsibility is the component that is often skipped. The Internet is the medium that provides a means of exchanging info, but our attentions spans continue to grow shorter, so the messages have to be quick and concise to get our attention. This means a lot of the details get truncated, leaving confusion and lots of filling-in-the-blanks. It often reminds me of the game of 'telephone' where a line of people would share a bit of information by whispering it from on person to the next. The point of the game was to show that inevitably, the message would completely derail by the time it reached the last person. The internet often reminds me of that game. I've truly learned to question EVERYTHING I see online these days. That is the direct response to seeing myths passed off as fact within my own industry. It's easy to believe things that are outside of your immediate knowledge base if the marketing is slick enough, but when it's a subject that you know more thoroughly than most others in your world, it's much easier to see the holes and question the message! So let's talk about some of the current well intentioned messaging that's gone through the proverbial game of telephone and come out distorted and confused on the other side. How do you convince your dog to choose you over the running squirrel at the park? Is there a magical solution to getting your dog to listen? Here's the truth: it's not magic, it's training! Yikes! The gate blew open. Where is the dog? A delivery at the front door. Oh no, the dog ran out. Today we're going to talk about threshold training with your dog. This is an important concept and something I teach to all of my dogs when they are young. They are never allowed to move through the front door or the backyard gate without my say so! This is a big fear of mine. What happens if the dog slips out the back gate because the wind has blown it open, you may not be there to stop the dog from leaving. It's great to have some measures in place to put the responsibility on the dog. How nice to know that in your absence, they will make the choice to stay put and safe! I've come to realize that there are two main types of people who try to train dogs. Those who are determined to blame something external for their lack of success - be it breed: "he's a terrier, when he's hunting, he'll never listen", the individual dog - "he's stubborn - no one could train him!" or the environment and its distractions - "oh, as soon as he sees a squirrel, he goes deaf." Then there are those who rise above the excuses and stereotypes and put in the work necessary. Guess who ends up with a dog who listens and who ends up sounding like a broken record spitting out the same tired excuses? There is nothing in the world quite like a puppy – warm, fuzzy and snuggly and you’d be hard-pressed to find anything cuter! But as the holidays approach, squash those thoughts about giving the gift of a puppy. Often parents imagine the wonderment of a soft, fuzzy puppy under the tree – providing a Christmas morning that their children will never forget. Fast forward a few days, weeks or months and the reality is a puppy can put a major strain on a household. Puppies under the tree are NOT a good gift for anyone! So that begs the question: Is your household ready for a puppy? Here are 10 things you should know before adding a puppy to your household. "Damn dog! I called him and he didn't come - what a bad dog." "Look at that dog ignoring his owner - they must not have done their job training - what a bad human!" Blame, blame, BLAME! We want to place it when we see something not going as planned. Dog not coming? Must be a bad dog! After all - he didn't come. No wait, that seems wrong - how can it be the dog's fault? Must be the human's fault - yes, that sounds right. After all, someone has to be at fault, right? Wait, what if nobody was at fault? Let's play the blame game for a moment. Imagine this. You're in Grade 1 math class learning about addition and subtraction. You seem to be ahead of the class and the teacher is excited about that, so she decides to fast track you. Over she comes with a giant Calculus book that she drops on your desk with a wink and a "good luck," as she walks away. Obviously, this giant leap in steps is overwhelming for you and even though you try to look at the Calculus book, you fail to make progress since you lack the necessary foundation. As you look up to seek help, you see your teacher glaring at you, clearly disappointed in your lack of ability, she shakes her head and mouths the words, "dumb kid." Does it seem reasonable to blame the learner? The majority of my thinking these days falls in line with that of a dog trainers. There are things that are engrained so deeply now, that it's surprising to me when I hear a different opinion or tactic. I pride myself on having an open mind, but there are definitely beliefs that I hold so strongly to that I can't imagine thinking differently. I remember the days prior to becoming a dog trainer well and there are times I smile at the old me and think, if I'd only known then. Okay, full disclosure: This may be a trick question! How many times should you say "sit" or "come" or "leave it"? Essentially, how many times should you repeat a command? This is one of the more common errors we see: repetition of commands. There are so many reasons why you should be very careful on this point - one command for each skill. To ask more than once is lacking in expectation and will only set you up for a dog who doesn't listen well. This is a commonly asked question for us and like most things in dog training, there is no, "one-size-fits-all" answer. Black and white is a rarity in the dog training world, so we try not to choose definitive sides on most issues. Really, we like to examine each individual situation and assess the dog's level of respect and understanding of the rules of the house. This topic came up in our My Dog Can Online Training community group and I knew right away it would make a great article. I also knew right away that it would likely to be a controversial one with strong beliefs on both sides of the argument, but I still pose the question: Should you let your dog play with other dogs? As with most posts I write, there is no black and white answer and my goal is to present the arguments, not to decide for you. So, let's go! When a dog belonging to one of our staff members went missing, we all had a bit of a wake-up call. Firstly, it reminded us that this could happen to anyone. Even though we are knowledgeable and extremely careful with our dogs and despite how well trained they are, there is really no predicting when disaster might strike. Secondly, we didn’t realize how little we knew about the search process including the use of traps, tendencies of dogs when lost, utilization of social media to help, etc. Lastly, we realized how ill prepared most of us are. Even a small thing such as having good, recent photos readily available is something most of us hadn’t considered. Despite the abundance of photos most of us take of our dogs, having decent photos that would be suitable for a “Lost Dog” poster handy is important to expedite the process. With these details in mind, we have given some thought to preparedness and wanted to share with others in case you find yourself in this horrible situation. We hope you never do, but a little planning could make a big difference. Early last week, a little girl was attacked by a dog in a Mississauga dog park. Her name is Georgia and she is an adorable, pig-tail wearing 3-year-old. She was visiting a leash-free park with her Grandfather and her brother. They stopped at the dog park to let their own dog have some off-leash time. I'm sure the Grandfather thought it would be a harmless and fun adventure - after all, it's just dogs playing, right? Without question, the recall is the most important skill anyone can teach a dog. Teaching your dog to "COME" when you call will allow you to give them freedom, knowing that they'll be safe and will come back to you when you need them to. Without a reliable recall, your dog could find danger, become lost or even worse. All dogs can learn a reliable recall if they have an owner willing to put in the time and effort. Training mode is a hoax! Want to know why? Think about this for a moment - training mode would be the time you strap on your bait pouch, get out your clicker and set out to train your dog. Okay, so we know that practice makes perfect, which means it is important to set out to train skills that you might not encounter in day-to-day life, but that can't be the only time you teach your dog. Dogs are masterful with their mouths. They are quite capable of being able to exert or remove pressure very accurately. That is why when people say, "he bit by accident," in all likelihood, they are wrong. There's truly only 2 reasons that a dog will put teeth on a human. They either meant to or they've never been taught not to. Make no mistake about it! Dogs are not who this blog post is about. Dogs are easy: If we give them good information, they will rise to the occasion. When we start a new session of classes, we can identify quickly which teams will have the most success. When we find ourselves frustrated with a team in class, 99% of the time, the frustration is with the handler, not the dog. Dogs are almost always excellent students, so we won’t talk about that part of the equation. Instead, let’s focus on the two-legged half of the team. There are many types of learning when it comes to dogs. Trainers often talk of Classical and Operant Conditioning as the two main ways dogs learn, but it can get a bit more complicated than that when you start to dig below the surface. There are several other things that may come into play when analyzing your dog's behaviour. One of the first commands I teach a new puppy is "OUT". It comes in very handy considering I like sporting breeds who are very tactile and love to pick up anything and everything, but it is quite typical of most puppies to want to explore the world with their mouths. Hence the need to teach the "out" command early on. To some people, the idea of a Daycare for Dogs is still outrageous, but we know that dogs have taken on a different role in our lives. We want to make sure their needs are met through the day, which sometimes means enlisting the help of a dog walker or a daycare. For most people, it's also a nice thing to bring home a tired dog at the end of the day, but daycare is not for every dog and not every daycare is created equally.
