Actor and comedian Sam Pancake sits down with friends famous and funny to discuss the surreal, silly and nonetheless star-studded made-for-TV movies of the 1970s. It's a loving look at baffling not-quite-feature-length flicks that often aren't on DVD and have largely been lost to time.

The Monday Afternoon Movie hiatus is officially over! Sam Pancake is back to recap and analyze your favorite made for TV movies and specials, in a way that only he can. He continues his march into 70's and 80's TV movie madess with Five Desperate Women, a 1971 ABC Movie of the Week starring Robert Conrad & Joan Hackett. To help Sam break down the plot for us, he's bringing back actor & comedian Sarah Burns (of HBO's Enlightened & Barry). What better Christmas present could Monday Afternoon Movie offer you than a holiday special with special guest Lauren Graham ? Not only is she one of the titular Gilmore Girls, she’s also a bona fide Christmas movie star in her own right as a result of starring in both Bad Santa and appearing in this year’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. And she’s also Sam’s IRL bestie, and they’re joining forces to discuss 1972’s THE HOUSE WITHOUT A CHRISTMAS TREE, starring Lisa Lucas and Jason Robards. Watch the film on YouTube .

We don’t like to brag on this podcast — we don’t, we swear! — but presented for your holiday delight is possibly the best union of guest and subject matter we’ve done so far: kickass drummer Patty Schemel and the 1968 made-for-TV Christmas classic, The Little Drummer Boy. Yes, this is a non-scary episode of the podcast, unless you find the Rankin/Bass stop-motion animation slightly unsettling, and many of us do. Listen to Sam and Patty reminisce about the 90s, her days in the band Hole, drugs and also holiday TV. Watch the special on YouTube .

Welcome to a special Halloween edition of Monday Afternoon Movie, in which we discuss not a hilarious made-for-TV gem that is enjoyable on a camp level but instead a TV movie that is actually scary. We speak of GHOSTWATCH, a 1992 BBC broadcast that took many an at-home viewer by surprise when it first aired. To say too much would ruin a first-time viewing experience, so Sam — joined by returning guest Roz Hernandez ! — will not be giving away the whole plot. Instead, let their conversation inspire you to tune in for yourself. Happy Halloween! And BTW, you can watch this film yourself right now (and for free!) on Tubi !

A hero returns just when we need him most! Is it Darren McGavin’s Carl Kolchak? No! It’s Sam Pancake, here to discuss the second of the Kolchak movies in which a host of crabby white men go on and on in the face of supernatural peril. This time, Sam is joined by professional funny-acting person Jack Plotnick , to discuss the highs and lows of the made-for-TV horror subgenre. Get even more Monday Afternoon Movie on Patreon ! You might think that if anyone was going to follow up the iconic film Rosemary's Baby with further tales of the plucky Woodhouse family, they would do so with the skill and thoughtfulness that made the original so celebrated. Well, you woulnd't be correct, because the 1976 ABC TV movie LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED TO ROSEMARY'S BABY tosses out the prestiga of the original for the wackadoo kookiness that you'd find in any made-for-TV horror flick of the era. Fortunately for Sam, his guest for the exploration of this sequel-that-should-not-be is none other than Stacie Ponder , of the celebrated Final Girl blog and more podcast episodes about scary stuff than we can count. Was Ruth Gordon justified in returning for this one? Find out! And if you're a fan of Stacie's appearances on the Evolution of Horror podcast, be sure to check out her new Twin Peaks podcast, The Detective and the Log Lady ! (Spoiler: She's the Log Lady.) Have you ever been watching reruns of That Girl and felt like Ted Bessell seemed too villainous to be playing Marlo Thomas’s boyfriend? If yes, then we’ve got the movie for you. Originally airing in 1973, SCREAM, PRETTY PEGGY has Bessell starring opposite Bette Davis and Sian Barbara Allen in a thriller that sure wants to earn the adjective “Hitchcockian.” Sam is joined by Andrew Hopf to discuss whether it earns it. Also known as Night Drive, this 1974 made-for-TV thriller stars none other than Valerie Harper as a lady motorist pursued by a psychopath. Is it a distaff Duel or an even scarier Crossroads? Here to answer that question are two of Sam's comedy chums, performers Carrie Aizley and Christen Sussin . Sam Pancake's X (Formerly known as Twitter)

Warning: This episode (and this TV film) concerns child pornography and might be upsetting for some listeners. What’s this? A return to the “teen trauma” wave of TV movies? YES! And it’s all thanks to this week’s guest, Margaret Cho , who made the suggestion that Sam look into this real doozy of a telefilm. FALLEN ANGEL stars Melinda Dillon as the mother of a tween who runs afoul of child pornographers. So yeah, this is heavy, but Sam and Margaret treat it like a real-life horror film… because it is. Will Shelley Winters finally have her revenge on Sam Pancake and the Monday Afternoon Movie? Now that we're back to the horror genre, Sam has invited iconic filmmaker and confirmed cult leader Peaches Christ into the fold to talk about REVENGE!, the 1971 ABC movie of the week starring Sam's nemesis, Dame Shelley Winters, Bradford Dillman, and Stuart Whitman. In what very much feels like a precursor to the classic Stephen King story Misery, a vigilante mother will do anything to get revenge against the man who she believes is directly responsible for her daughter's untimely death. Will her plot to destroy him go too far? Will Peaches' perspective on all things Shelley finally convince Sam to show her some love? Or will Sam's deep and passionate disdain for her just grow stronger with each scene stealing blocking and each passing huff and wheeze? A school teacher takes a job teaching at a very rural school where she discovers that the locals adhere to very strict rules regarding their society as well as their children. It wouldn't quite feel like the holidays without a Monday Afternoon Movie holiday special. For that special, why not cover the infamous pinnacle of all holiday variety shows, The Star Wars Holiday Special?! The whole crew is begrudgingly and contractually back to bring a truly forgettable viewing experience to your late 1970's television sets. Mark Hamill is here as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford is back as Han Solo, and everyone's favorite space Mom Carrie Fisher is back as Princess Leia Organa. Unfortunately, they are not the main characters in any way. That title would belong to Lumpy & Itchy, the family of Chewbacca, who spend large portions of the movie grunting away about Life Day without the assisitance of subtitles. Then, just for fun, toss in a bevy of celebrity guests like Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, Art Carney, Dihann Carroll, and Jefferson Starship. If you're a Star Wars fan and you've never seen it, you really should at least once... okay, maybe not. Happy holidays (and Life Day!) from Sam Pancake and everyone at Monday Afternoon Movie & TableCakes! We hope that you got to spend some time away from work and with your loved ones. Ok y’all- for my Halloween episode(s) this year, I decided to take us on a trip to that fated Dutch Colonial Mansard-Roofed House of Horror with the Glowing Demonic Window/Eyes. I had never seen the fourth installment and first TVM iteration of the frenetic “Amityville Horror” franchise, 1989’s AMITYVILLE HORROR: THE EVIL ESCAPES aka AMITYVILLE 4: THE EVIL ESCAPES aka A HIDEOUS GAY LAMP IS KILLING MY FAMILY. Y’all. Y’all!??! Y’ALL. The good news is that you can watch this jaw-dropper most anywhere: Tubi, Plex, Pluto, FreeVee, AMC+, Roku, YouTube, the CVS app, in the settings dial of a new Whirlpool dryer, if you stare long enough into a slightly spoiled container of macaroni salad from that questionable snack kiosk at the airport. The better news is that it is one of the most ridiculously hilarious, nonsensically kookoo-boots “movies” I’ve ever had the pleasure of covering on the pod. The best news: my guest is the delightful and deeply knowledgeable cutie- smartie Joshua Tonks, who I was a big fan of from my fave scary movie podcasts from the UK, “Evolution of Horror” and “Brain Rot.” Luckily he was here in LA visiting from London this week and I snagged him in person for my 🎃 special! You're going to want to bring out the 20 sided dice, blacklights, and Mountain Dew for this one. We're staying in the year 1982, but after a string of teenage wasteland themed episodes, it's time to get back to the show's roots. That right! Horror! Specifically the Tom Hanks led film Mazes and Monsters, also starring Wendy Crewson and Chris Makepeace. Joining Sam today is TableCakes own Meika Grimm, editor of this very podcast. She has also edited a number of our sister podcasts, including Smart Mouth. She is an L.A. based digital creator, musician, and audio/video engineer. Our film follows 4 college aged kids from New York who have formed a bond around a fantasy table top board game loosely based on Dungeons & Dragons. When the group decide to take the game into the local caves to add an extra level of excitement to the adventure, it leads to one of them going missing and the rest wondering what is real and what is fantasy. It’s super funny how hitchhiking used to be a thing everyone did to get aroun, but once people got it in their heads that it was dangerous and people could die, we stopped. We’re back — if not for a full-sized serving of Monday Afternoon Movie, then at least for a mini-season to kick off the new year. Sam Pancake is diving into the Stepford sequels, the TV-only continuations of the 1972 theatrical release The Stepford Wives. And here to discuss the first one — 1980’s REVENGE OF THE STEPFORD WIVES, starring Sharon Gless — is Naomi Ekperigin, making her triumphant return to the show. Happy pride month! To celebrate the gayer side of made-for-TV magic, Sam is giving you the gift of a new episode that is not about a horror film. I know, I know. Welcome to 2020! This week, General Hospital actor Mark Samuel joins Sam to discuss the 1979 thriller MURDER BY NATURAL CAUSES. The film, which has Hal Holbrook, Richard Anderson and Barry Bostwick playing men involved with a femme fatale Katharine Ross. It’s a sexy thriller — within the restraints of what could play on broadcast television in 1979, but sexy nonetheless. More often than not, part of the fun of this podcast is laughing at the delightful bonkers nature of TV movies from this era. This week? It’s a different case. Sam is joined by film critic and fellow podcaster Dave White to discuss DUEL, the 1971 classic that introduced the world to a up-and-comer named Steven Spielberg. It’s stark. It’s tense. And it’s such a great made-for-TV effort that it eventually wound up on the big screen after the fact! Just one month after John Carpenter ruined the American babysitter market with HALLOWEEN, NBC aired SOMEBODY’S WATCHING ME, a different tale of imperiled women. This one stars Lauren Hutton and Adrienne Barbeau, and it’s quite likely one of the better made-for-TV thrillers ever, but the real take-away might be how good Hutton is as the film’s heroine. Actress and comedian Beth Crosby joins Sam to talk this one out. In episode two of what we’re calling Amanda Reyes Presents Sam Pancake Presents the Monday Afternoon Movie, we look at 1979’s Death Car on the Freeway, a crime thriller we’d best describe as Duel But Not. Shelley Hack stars an intrepid journalist attempting to investigate the Freeway Fiddler, who probably has the worst nickname in the history of serial killers. Mark Tracy joins Sam to talk acting, actors and, of course, cars. Welcome to the fourth season of Sam Pancake Presents the Monday Afternoon Movie, in which the list of featured films is curated by none other than Amanda Reyes, queen of TV movie fandom and author of the authoritative book on the subject. Amanda has handpicked every one of the films for the next few episodes, and for the episode she sits in the guest chair, she chose 1973’s ISN’T IT SHOCKING? — a proto-slasher starring Alan Alda, Louise Lasser and a host of geriatric murder victims. Has Sam finally met his TV movie match? Find out! Sam Pancake’s exploration of the horrors of the animal kingdom edges toward its explosive climax with 1978's THE BEASTS ARE ON THE STREETS, a film that guest Nina Millin points out more than once features relatively few moments of actual animals on actual streets. But whatever. Carol Lynley stars as the only animal scientist who can stop a zoological horde from rampaging through a town populated by extras who seem genuinely surprised to be in the presence of actual loose animals. Think of it a sort of of cinema verite, only Carol Lynley is also there! The 1976 TV movie The Savage Bees had audiences demanding “More! MORE!” Hollywood bigwigs knew that the three other bee-themed made-for-TV horror films wouldn’t be enough, and that they had to tell more of the story of Jeannie Deveraux. In 1978, our bug lady heroine returned to the small screen, though now played by Tovah Feldshuh, and this week, Sam and special guest Nadya Ginsburg discussing the exciting final chapter in the saga. And then we promise we won’t talk about bees again.
