Every week, I get up for a ParkRun. Okay, most weeks. It's not for good reason that I'll often miss a ParkRun (yes, having your hair done the day before is a good reason) and I'll even visit other ParkRuns is I'm somewhere else in the country to make sure I don't miss out. But this isn't just about fitness. Showing up to the parkrun, seeing my time every week, and being able to see my progress is having more than just an impact on m health and business. I run with a podcast or audiobook in my ears - usually it's business, mindset, or marketing. But it's not those that are having the impact. I'm running my own race, against myself, every week. I'm seeing my progress, tracking the data, and looking at the 1% differences. Somehow, I'm learning all these things in the context of a parkrun, but I'm learning things about business too. And in today's episode, I'm sharing what I've learnt about business mindset, mental agility and success from running the weekly parkrun. Want to start a podcast? Navigating the tightrope walk between a career in teaching and the entrepreneurial leap is no small feat, and this week I'm revealing the raw truths behind such a journey. Picture this: I'm prepping for a crucial business presentation, but I'm also on the clock at a school, ready to mold young minds. In this intimate sharing session, I recount how adjusting my teaching schedule created the breathing room my business desperately needed, while also dissecting the often sugarcoated success stories on networking platforms. This balancing act isn't just about passion; it's a strategic game of time management and financial planning that rarely gets the spotlight it deserves. As someone who's worn the hats of CEO, CMO, and CFO all before lunch, I understand the juggling act that is solo entrepreneurship. In this episode, I explore the necessity of a safety net when building your dream business and the reality that growth often comes at a snail's pace. I'll share how maintaining a foothold in my previous teaching career not only provided a financial cushion but also offered a unique perspective that enriched my business venture. For anyone standing at the crossroads of maintaining stability and chasing innovation, this episode is a must-listen, as I lay bare the strategies and mindset needed to navigate these transformative waters successfully. Picture this: you're about to make a presentation at a networking meeting, and you're asked by stranger "do you have any jack leads?" —how do you spin that into a compelling story? That's where the power of storytelling in podcasting comes to life, something I'm constantly fine-tuning on my own journey. This episode is a deep-dive into the art of crafting stories that stick with your audience, from using a story bank to draw out the perfect anecdote, to striking that delicate balance between rich detail and the punchy brevity that keeps listeners craving more. As a former teacher and speaker, I'll share my insights into pace, tone, and enthusiasm to keep the narrative fresh and riveting whilst thinking of some of the best storytellers in the business that we can learn from. It's no longer good enough to just show up online with a bunch of "how-to", educational content. We've got a job to get that audience listening by creating relatable content that builds a strong emotional connection with your listeners. Every word matters, and so does every pause—so join me as we navigate the subtle, transformative craft of storytelling that can turn a simple podcast episode into a memorable journey for every listener. I've been a teacher since 2014, when I started training in schools, and since 2022, I've been transitioning from education to entrepreneurship. Online, it's easy to see everyone talk about the success of their business and quitting their old industry. But I'm here to normalise doing it slowly, one step at a time, and to validate that finding a complementary balance between your old venture and new can be the way to make it work for you - even if that means getting to a stage where you're delivering a business session in the middle of a school day! I'm no less of an entrepreneur or a business owner because I'm still in teaching. And it turns out, zero-hours contracts aren't as bad as the reputation they get when they work for you and give both parties what they need! Want to start a podcast? Big visions drive me. I've always had big ideas, whatever role I'm in. Mixed Attainment Maths curriculums in teaching, building a community of single women to end loneliness, and changing the way the world thinks through podcast, and those are just the career ones! And sometimes life demands come into play, and in the interest of doing at least one of them well, we end up having to give up on some of our big dreams and visions to make way for new aspirations to unfold. It isn't just about the work I do, but also the other big ideas I've had to change direction on, and how my life has evolved over the past five years. Whatever I choose to do, I'm committed to making a difference—one small step at a time, holding my values of creativity, connection and fun at the core of everything I do. Join me to learn why it's more than okay to give up on those dreams sometimes, whether that's forever or just on pause. Want to start a podcast? It's always easier to look back and say "here's how to start a podcast" once you've already started one. The Single Girl's Guide to Life podcast started over 3 years ago, back in July 2021, and this podcast, Big Vision Business Owners, started 6 months ago. So from my two experiences starting a podcast, I'm gonna peel back the content to reveal how creating strategic content and fostering genuine engagement trumps any trending chart position. In this week's episode, I'll share my weekly ritual for turning a single podcast episode into a treasure trove of repurposable gems that will guide your listeners through that all important customer journey. When you put yourself out there online in the ways I do, it's a funny side effect when somebody knows you before you know them. It's a little bit "celebrity" to be recognised because someone who has seen or heard you online... but I LOVE meeting those people. When you first start a podcast, it's the dreaded fear of every entrepreneur turned podcast host - what if nobody listens to my podcast? And from there, the overthinking begins... Are my messages landing with the right people? Maybe I'm not "expert" enough. Why would anyone listen to me? The numbers are low and you don't know what's working yet - and in this episode, I'll be sharing how we can use that to our advantage. And I say this as someone that has started over with their podcast, going from hundreds of guaranteed weekly downloads, down to single and double digits as I first start a new podcast again. People are always really shocked when I tell them I network at least once a week. That's my average. I head to at least one event every single week, mostly in person, to network in the local community, or further afield if I'm heading to a conference or training. And that's because networking, at the startup stage of my business, is pivotal for my business. It's the bit I got wrong in my first business, the part I didn't spend enough time doing. Despite being time-rich, I overlooked this as a key part of bulding relationships, building brand awareness and setting up the foundation for my business. So listen in to find out the reason I'm committing to networking once a week in 2024, and how this dedication is key to not just surviving but thriving in today's business landscape. I hear it all the time - "How do I get more downloads on my podcast?", "How can I make it to the top of the charts?" And I get it - these metrics are the only measures we're automatically provided with when it comes to podcast hosting platforms and the public perception of how successful your podcast is doing. But with nearly three years of podcasting experience, I can tell you that from a business perspective, the download numbers and chart position aren't the crux of having a successful podcast that works for your and your business. Sure, exposure is good - the same way getting a radio interview, "going viral" and having an article written about you can all raise awareness of you and who you are. But we're in the business game - not the podcast sponsorship game, which is prediominantly run on download numbers. We're here to make our podcast work as part of our nuture sequence, of building our authority and enabling people to get to know and trust us, as well as teach them something they didn't know before. Which is exactly why I'm gonna share with you why the podcast download numbers aren't the most important measure when deciding if your podcast is succesful and doing well or not. What You'll Learn In This Episode: - The difference metrics for measuring the success of your podcast (that aren't just the download numbers!) - Understand the customer journey and sequence behind the podcast, and how the podcast fits into nurturing leads and creating a pipeline. - What it really takes to make a "successful" podcast, beyond making it in the Apple Podcast charts. Best Moments: - "The success of your podcast can be looked at objectively... but the charts are not going to tell you the data that only you know, which is how many leads is it bringing in and how many leads are you able to nurture through that process." - "The next time you feel like you're panicking about the downloads on your podcast, take a step back and think, instead of worrying about trying to grow this thing, how can I connect better with the audience?" - "So when it comes to considering the success of your podcast, you can spend each week looking at the numbers, stressing over the numbers and thinking. The numbers are what it is. But my question to you would be, especially if you're a podcast that's already out there, if you are getting a thousand downloads per week, putting you in the top 5% nearly of all podcasts out there, where are those thousand people going?" Early into the "I Haven't Made It Yet Series" self doubt crept in as the sales hadn't yet. (You can head back to Episode 2 to find out about it). It's been a quiet few months in 2024, showing up every day working on the marketing, the lead gen, sales techniques... you name it, I'm doing it in some way. And despite those efforts, I hadn't yet secured a sale in 2024. But this week, I finally did it. Because this isn't like a PAYE job. You don't know when the next commitment to pay is coming in, when the next referral or lead is going to be the right fit, it doesn't follow a schedule. Instead, it's blind faith (paired with course correcting where necessary) matched with strategy and consistency. And yes, I've made the sale, and I'll be celebrating and sharing it with you - because a sale is a celebration no matter what when it's in your own business. And so the strategy, consistency and self-belief now needs to continue to keep working on the next sale too! Want to start a podcast? Today's episode is all about starting a podcast. Whilst you can pick up your phone, record an episode and get it all uploaded to Buzzsprout (or any other podcast host) within a few moments, sometimes we can get in our own way. Plus, there's ways to leverage this launch and use it to your advantage. So with "starting a podcast" being on SO many people's lists, I'm sharing how long it *actually* takes to launch - so that you can reverse engineer from your launch date how you're gonna get your podcast started and off the ground. What You'll Learn In This Episode: - How long it takes to start a podcast - What's gonna get in the way of your starting and launching your podcast. - The leverage in a podcast launch and if a soft launch or hard launch is better suited to your and your businnes. Best Moments: - "It's great for building your authority, getting known as an expert in your field, and, of course, it gives you endless amounts of content to be able to use and to have that omnipresence across all social media platforms." - "At the other end of the spectrum, we have what's called a soft launch... A soft launch can be useful for somebody like that, who is putting themselves out there in a new way for the first time." - "You need to be thinking about exactly what you're doing with the intent of your podcast, everything what you're going to be talking about. What you're going to be doing and why." Want to start a podcast? I didn’t know it before this year, but until recently, I’d been playing it small in my business. When I first jumped across from teaching to business, I was thinking about hourly rates, what would cover my working, and adopting a self-employed model, working from my previous experiences as a freelancer in theatre. But over the past 2 years, I’ve realised that if you’re building a business, your visions gotta be bigger. If you’re not gonna be burnt out from wearing all the hats all the time, you’re gonna need a team. If you’re gonna have a team, you’re gonna need to craft a culture. If you’re gonna craft a culture, you’ve got know what it looks like - you’ve gotta have a big vision. And those visions also extend past your business - what does the vision look like for you in the future? Having a big vision is the key driving force to any business owner achieving their version of big. It doesn’t have to mean scaling past 7 figures, but it can allow you to dream past the £40k goal you had for you business “just to replace your salary.” So listen in to hear my journey of building a big vision for the business, what I hope to build, and how you can flesh out the same big vision for your business too. In this episode, I'm moving social media to the side and sharing the TWO main methods for getting your podcast seen by the right people (i.e. your ideal clients), as well as dispelling the myth that podcast downloads are the measure of success of the podcast in your business. This makes sure your efforts are best placed to promote your podcast and get it seen by your ideal clients, rather than getting it seen by anyone and everyone, so that you can leverage the podcast to get more leads, create a greater connection, and move potential clients towards becoming customers, all from your podcast episodes. What You'll Learn In This Episode: - Why who's downloading your podcast is more important than podcast downloads alone - The two methods to focus on to get your podcast seen by more people, without posting to social media. - The concept of creating a "contagion" with your podcast, and the psychology behind making a podcast that people WANT to share with their peers. Best Moments: "We don't care if we get 100,000 downloads. If those people aren't the right kind of people, they're not your ideal clients." "There are ways to actually get more eyes on your podcast that don't just fall to social media." "Your content has got to be worth listening to... where they wanna just keep listening to the next ones." "We are all about creating a true connection with your audience, building a community around your podcast." When I first started building a business from scratch, I didn't realise how completley alone I would be. I had jumped from a busy, full-time teaching job, with various additional responsibilities, to no job at all - just me, myself and time in my business. All that time, surely I was loving it?! WRONG. Despite the excitement and adventure of pursuing this new, flexible lifestyle, where I would be the one in control of my time, working on a project I loved and was passionate about, and could see the direct rewards and results of my own efforts... it was lonely. But having spent the two years prior learning how to be alone and enjoy and embrace my single life, I took the same principles and learnings to overcome that loneliness in my business. And you can hear all about how I've navigated that transition in this week's Big Vision Business Owners episode of "I Haven't Made It Yet" Want to start a podcast? Imagine you open up Instagram and you’re inundated with notifications. Comments, likes, follows. One of you videos has gone VIRAL – it's the dream, right?! But is the pursuit of virality in business marketing really all it's cracked up to be? When I first started marketing my life coaching business through content, getting views was *everything* and going viral was IT. And it didn’t take long before one of my Reels reached 10,000 views. A few months after that, a TikTok hit 200,000 views. And the experiences are WILD, to say the least. So from someone that’s “gone viral”, here’s what it’s REALLY like to get all those eyes on your business, and what it does as a result. Want to start a podcast? This week, I had a moment of doubt creep in. As somebody that is inherently optimistic, positive and energetic, this is an infrequent experience for me. The toll of business however, can get the better of me and it reminds me of the human being that I am, and how it can't always feel breezy and that even with bouts of resilience and positivity, there will be moments of doubt. In this episode, I talk about where that doubt has crept in, how it's affected me and what I did about it. And you'll hear me talking my way back out of it, claiming back my inner resilience and not letting any lack of sales pull me down. Welcome to this *NEW* second of style of podcast within the Big Vision Business Owner world called “Haven’t Made It Yet”. It’s the side I’ll be sharing as the new business owner, navigating her way through business life on a path to “Making It” as someone who hasn’t yet made it. It’s an invitation to join me on this journey - one which you may be further ahead than me, or following in the footsteps of. Wherever you are, you’re welcome to join me, Chantelle Dyson, as I peel back the curtain on a business that hasn’t even hit its 5 figures yet! You’ll hear all the juiciness as I share my transition from being a teacher (still in as 2 days in the day job) to launching a podcast training and agency. You won’t be hearing for any 7-figure CEO right now. This is from business owner that hasn’t made it yet, that’s muddling through, getting it wrong, and finding the happiness in solving all the problems along the way. And I’m starting it off with a discussion to tackle the question of what 'making it' truly looks like, challenging the benchmarks set by society and instead, defining it on our own terms. Expect personal growth, business mindset, plus a whole lot of humility and vulnerability… It’ll be an ongoing conversation of ups and down, lessons and learnings, and in this journey of milestones, goals and growth, the narrative never truly ends—it only transforms. *THIS EPISODE IS COMPLETELY UNEDITED* - except for the intro music, I've left this episode exactly as it was when I recorded it. The reason? So that you could hear what a podcast with no editing sounds like, and realise that stutters and mistakes are absolutely fine, so that you can finally get over your perfectionism and actually get that podcast recorded, once and for all. Honestly, I thought about this episode *a lot* more than usual. I rely on the edits to retake parts, but I've also done interviews, been on panels, and I'm a teacher by trade, so committing to what I'm saying and not being able to go back and edit is just normal. And the next time you try to tell me you can't start your podcast because you're worried you'll "say the wrong thing" or "stumble over your words", you'll know that 1. you can always edit and 2. there's a podcast episode out there of mine that's completely unedited and where I do stumble over my words, and hey, I'm here to let the world see and hear it! This week's episode of the Big Vision Business Owners podcast steps into the rapidly-evolving digital landscape where artificial intelligence (AI) has become a game-changer across various industries, transforming the way we approach marketing and business. In this episode, I delve into the multifaceted realm of AI, such as Chat GPT and Copy.ai, demystifying its applications from content creation to marketing strategies. I reveal the AI tools I'm using to help me save time and get it ALL done as a solo entrepreneur, and share the reasons you need to get on board with AI and how to do it in the right way. As well as that, I'll be sharing the concerns to maintain over AI and why you won't lose your job to an AI tool any time soon, even if you're feeling a direct threat from it right now. AI isn't something to be afraid of, but in business and content creation there is a RIGHT way to using AI tools in 2024 so you can leverage AI as a powerful tool, rather than seeing it as a mere shortcut to a quick and easy life. Whilst we all wind down for the end of the year, this week's episode comes out specially on New Year's Eve. My word for 2023 was "excitement" and from a personal experience, there have been trips to more places around the UK than ever before, attending conferences, going to gigs and attending the very special Eurovision. In my personal life, the introduction of "step-children" has brought on a new dynamic, and how that balances in with managing the business has been an interesting challenge. But the key bit that you all want to know about is the business. With a new venture starting half way through the year, this second business is already more successful than the first. And I'm going to share the moves I made and strategies I applied that got me there in 2023, to make this year an even greater success than 2022. 2022 was about finding my feet. 2023 was about following my intuition. I'm dreaming bigger, going for the big vision, and transitioning into being a business owner, not being self-employed. And I urge you too, to reflect on your year, not just from a business perspective but your personal life too - it's just as important. And I wish you a Happy New Year as we close on 2023, and head into the wonder that's going to be 2024!
