Weddings are found in almost every society, so weddings should be for everyone, and unfortunately, it doesn't always feel that way. Milka Milliance is a co-founder, author, inclusion and equity strategist, leadership coach, facilitator and organizational change consultant. A wedding is a ceremony planned to formally execute (and celebrate) a legally binding marriage contract between two parties. While it may not be the sexiest or most romantic way to describe it, but at the crux of it all, a marriage is a legal contract and a wedding is the ritual that marks this life altering change. Even though weddings are incredible and magical and often described as the best day of someone's life, there is just no escaping the fact that a wedding is accompanied by several legal considerations, both in your union, and in the planning of the event itself. But the legal stuff can be really overwhelming. So we have an amazing guest with us to help understand it all. Kunbi Odubogun is a business attorney, speaker, and digital media expert with over 12 years experience in the creative and legal industries. She is the founder of two online businesses — Perfete , a digital media platform focused on highlighting the celebratory moments of life, and Legally Set , an e-commerce store offering legally sound, attorney-drafted contract templates for entrepreneurs, event professionals, and creative business owners. For most of us, a wedding is something we view as a rite of passage filled with traditions we associate with the celebration, that often we might not understand or really know the history behind. So, naturally, there are a lot of questions when it comes to why we do weddings the way that we do. To get some answers, we sat down with Mariah Grumet, founder and instructor at Old Soul Etiquette. She wrote an entire book on modern wedding etiquette called "What Do I Do?" and has made appearances on the Today Show, NBC News, and more. This episode is sponsored by Greenvelope . This week we are taking a look at wedding planning with a psychological twist. After all, a wedding is about so much more than what color flowers you choose, or whether or not you wear a veil. A wedding is a celebration of your marriage. And while the terms wedding and marriage are often used interchangeably, they actually describe two very different things. Therefore, not only do couples need to navigate wedding planning, but marriage planning as well. With us today to dig deeper into this idea is Annabelle Seife, Ph.D. Annabelle is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist at Therapists of New York as well as the Founder of Before the Leap , a fun and interactive premarital workshop where couples learn and practice the skills needed for happy, lasting relationships. Marriage requires skills. It is a partnership that is ever-changing and growing and requires certain strengths in both partners to be the most successful. Having a third party provide outside feedback and resources, is a really powerful way to strengthen your relationship at any stage, but especially in a marriage. Pop culture and movies often put a negative spin on couples therapy, because it is seen as a sign of defeat, or that the end is near, when in fact, it can be used from the start of the relationship to ensure communication and boundaries are where they need to be! Hear from Krystal Mazzola, couples therapist, about the benefits you can receive from couples therapy! Gone are the days of registering for crystal vases. Today's couples are much more likely to put a grill, large appliances, or even honeymoon expenses on their registry than they are to put fine china or serving ware. This type of option is often called a cash registry, and it gives the couples a lot more flexibility in how they can use their wedding gifts! Why has this shift happened? Why do brides traditionally wear white? Many of us probably think the tradition of a white wedding dress is longer than it really is. Some argue it is just 80 years old! It is so synonymous with weddings it's hard to believe that could be true. Queen Victoria is most often credited for starting the trend, but there is evidence that in Rome over 2,000 years ago a white tunic was worn by most brides. White is now the overwhelming choice for most American brides, a sort of bridal uniform. It has become an iconic symbol of weddings. The lucky person who catches the bouquet is assumed to be the next to walk down the aisle themselves, or in some cases to get engaged. So where did this come from? Why did it start, how has it evolved today, and should you include it in your wedding? Jessica and Sari dive into the tradition all the way from the start to explain where it came from, how it has changed throughout the years, tips and tricks for pulling off the bouquet toss the savvy way, and alternatives you can think about if you decide to toss the bouquet toss all together!
