BRIAN KATZ knew he could coach basketball forever. He also knew that he had to listen to what others were telling him. Ultimately, the basketball mastermind made the decision. It was time to retire and see what life was about without the rigors of his life as a basketball coach.e So he said good-bye to Sac State Basketball, which represented 14 of his 45 years coaching the game of basketball. Good news is that after a month of transition, I think Katz is happy with his decision. We get to hear about it today.

In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard catches up with his retired friend "Nobody will fully comprehend what Brian Katz has meant to the basketball community. I appreciate the insight that Brian delivers when it comes to describing life as a basketball coach. Be ready to be slapped upside the head with wisdom." Our conversation hits four areas:

SEGMENT 1 🏀 begins with an update on his health status. We then dive into his decision to retire and what was behind him stepping away from the game. He talks about the transition he is going through and how retirement has opened up a reconnection for him with many things in his life.
SEGMENT 2 🏀 is devoted to the time that Coach Katz arrived at Sac State in 2008. We discuss the magical 2014-15 season that included the infamous "Hail Garrity" (Senior guard Dylan Garrity hit a 75-foot shoot to defeat Weber State at "The Nest.") Speaking of the Nest, we talk about the criticism behind Sac State's home floor.
SEGMENT 3 🏀 is entirely about the coaching timeline for Katz. From his start in 1977 at Sylvan Junior High through his stints at Casa Roble and Center High School. Katz shares some fun stores about his assistant days at Santa Clara and where things took off for Katz at Delta Junior College in Stockton. We finish off with some funny stories between me and Katz, one as a player and another as a coach.
SEGMENT 4 🏀 has the retired coach sharing his basketball formula for winning games. The coach gives us a sneak peek into two books he is writing. And we finish it off with more wisdom.

Our Connection | Brian and I go way back. It all started at Arden Little League where his boys Vinny and Steven played with my nephew PJ Simas (ETB Episode 9). Brian even coached in Buzzardball (while at Sac State). He will share a great story in today's episode.
