When teachers are first exposed to generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, it’s easy for them to identify potential concerns. Will the AI do all the work for students? Will students use it to cheat? Will students lose the ability to be creative and think critically because the AI can do those things for them? Our guest, Carl Hooker, believes we can strike the proper balance and keep the human at the heart of learning, even with AI in the equation. He says, “I like the idea of keeping the human in the center. AI is the assistant. AI is the feedback. AI is the tutor, the thought partner, but it’s not the learner. The learner is still the most important part.” He adds, “Human compassion will never surpass artificial intelligence.” Join us as we talk to Carl about his new book, Learning Evolution: The New Era of AI in the Classroom , and explore practical ways that students, teachers, and systems can adapt to the changes brought to the learning process by AI. In this episode, Dr. Katie Novak joins us to talk about the new book she has co-written with Dr. Catlin Tucker, Shift Writing Into the Classroom With UDL and Blended Learning. They believe that we need to rethink how we approach writing in school. Dr. Novak, a former writing teacher herself, explains that while teachers are working harder than ever, what we are currently doing is not working. Fewer than 30% of students are meeting grade-level writing proficiency on standardized assessments, and teachers are burning themselves out by bringing large numbers of papers home to grade. On top of this, generative artificial intelligence (AI) has made cheating easier, threatening to undercut the integrity of student writing. The solution to these challenges, this book argues, is to shift the writing process into the classroom. Visit AVID Open Access to learn more.

Dr. Kelly Camak joins us to discuss ways to rethink assessment in our classrooms. Using a five-part framework, she explains how we can use assessment as revelation and make assessment a more collaborative, personal, and student-centered experience. Dr. Camak says that this framework is not a one-way-to-do-things recipe, but rather, these elements include “ideas and constructs to help us really think through how we can truly center student as curriculum—how we can really partner and eliminate the boundaries of any type of constraint around assessment.” Throughout our conversation, Dr. Camak continually references how amazing our young people are and how assessment can become a tool for us to allow that brilliance to shine. She says, “There is so much more kids could do if we get out of the way. How do we step back and bask in the glory and brilliance of our young people? And that’s good for us. That’s what we need. That’s what we want. That’s actually what we say we do this for.” Tune in to learn about the five-part revelatory assessment framework and how it can positively impact learning in your classroom. We discuss the topic of her newest book, cowritten with Dr. Catlin Tucker, The Shift to Student-Led: Reimagining Classroom Workflows with UDL and Blended Learning. This work explores the unique intersection of Universal Design for Learning and blended learning as a way to design learning that is both student-centered and student-led. Dr. Novak says, “My work is predominantly focused on deconstructing one-size-fits-all models for teaching and learning, and I do that through the lens of trying to universally design instruction.” She adds, “Universal design is essentially how we recognize barriers to one-size-fits-all and then provide pathways, so everyone has what they need to be successful.” Throughout our conversation, Dr. Novak details how these two approaches work together. She says, “Blended learning allows you to operationalize the research base as universal design because it gives us a frame for how we can provide all of these different pathways but also have opportunities to work with small groups of students—to help them self-assess, to determine if the choices they’re making are in fact serving them as learners.” Visit AVID Open Access to learn more.

In this episode, we are joined by international thought leader, best selling author, and blended learning practitioner, Dr. Catlin Tucker. Together we unpack why should consider a blended learning approach and discuss how blended learning can be an effective solution for many of the pain points educators may be feeling, including a perceived lack of student engagement, the challenges of differentiation, an increasing teacher workload, and the challenges of pacing a diverse group of learners. Throughout our conversation, we emphasize the need for a flexible approach to teaching and learning that can meet a wide range of learner needs. “When you are still designing a single experience for all learners, that is not equitable," says Dr. Tucker. "What we need to be thinking about and acknowledging in our design work is different learners just need different inputs to get to a particular output, so we need to design learning experiences that allow for that, that allow us to give learners what they specifically need, and I just think it’s impossible to do in these kind of one size fits all lessons.” This episode is part I in a two-part conversation with Dr. Catlin Tucker. Part II will be released next week. Visit AVID Open Access to learn more about blended learning.

We live in an innovation economy driven by and dependent on computing and technology. Dr. Fletcher points out: “We’re failing students if we don’t give them the opportunity to learn these skills.” It’s not that all students will become computer scientists. However, an understanding and competency in computer science will narrow the gap between those who become opportunity haves and have-nots. Students who learn to leverage technology to do what they want to do will become the societal “haves,” while the “have-nots” are going to be those that have the world “done to them.” Dr. Fletcher reiterates this point when she stresses, “We need to be giving more students the opportunity to really learn the skills they need to contribute, not just as workers but as citizens in the 21st century. And it needs to be a variety of students.” Tune in to this episode to hear more about the need for computer science education in our schools and potential ways to expand opportunity, access, and participation in the field. The world needs problem solvers, and providing students with intentional opportunities to engineer solutions to authentic problems in our classrooms is a powerful way to develop these skills in our learners. In many cases, young students are already naturally creative problem solvers. They engineer the world around them every day. If we can foster and encourage this practice in them at a young age, they will not only be more apt to continue being confident in solving problems, they will also develop many transferable skills and be exposed to many potential careers. Christine Cunningham, a Professor of Education and Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, has launched Youth Engineering Solutions (YES) to develop curricula to help the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers become excited about learning. When integrating technology successfully into your classroom, it’s important to identify your “why” first. Begin with an educational need or purpose that technology can help you achieve. What standards are you targeting? What goals do you want to achieve? Then ask yourself, are there technology tools that can better help me and my students achieve those goals? If the answer is yes, ask what instructional practices you can effectively pair with that device or program to maximize learning. This learning first and tools second approach will increase the odds of academic success in your classroom. As teachers, a metaphor that often resonates with us is the teacher as gardener. While we can't force a plant to grow, we can water it, provide light, add any extra nutrients that are needed, and speak gently to it to encourage growth. And sometimes, we need to support these young plants with a stake for a little while, until they’re strong enough to stand on their own. Project-based learning (PBL) is a nutrient-rich soil that provides ripe growing conditions for our students. We’ve spent time exploring PBL during our last two episodes. Given PBL's complexity and richness, we believe a closer look at three critical questions about PBL will help teachers as you consider implementation during distance or hybrid learning. Today, we are focused on exploring how to efficiently and effectively plan for hybrid learning. Many school districts are being asked to pivot their delivery systems on short notice to adapt to new infection rates in their area. This essentially means that teachers must be ready to flex between face-to-face instruction, a hybrid model, and fully remote learning at any time. While this makes a lot of sense from a health and planning perspective, it can very quickly become difficult to manage for teachers. Let's review six ways to structure and plan for hybrid learning. At its core, blended learning is learning that takes place partially in a face-to-face, brick-and-mortar setting and partially in a virtual, online setting. Blended learning leans on the ideas that both face-to-face and online learning offer significant benefits and that the blended-learning teacher will draw upon the advantages of each option.
