In Part 2/2 in our exploration of post-9/11 horror and how the wake of a national tragedy twisted our films, we turn to J.J Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard. CLOVERFIELD (2008) is a found footage giant monster movie that implores imagery from the terrorist attack and a group attempt to survive in a ravaged New York City. Joined again by Austin Torres (Would You Die? Podcast, Spider short film), we talk about healing through validation vs escapism, the depiction of the military, and of course compare it all back to RED EYE (2005) from last episode. The Dogs are joined by fellow podcaster/filmmaker Austin Torres (Would You Die? The Dogs are joined by friend of the pod Chloé Harper Gold (writer, critic) for their analysis of the always controversial horror sub-genre of rape revenge. Have you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist Party? This month, we’re joined by director Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface, The Geechee Witch), to discuss the great red menace which must be extinguished by any means necessary! 1950s Americana is met with an existential threat in the form of shapeshifting aliens which mean to replace our way of life, our entire way of thinking, in the original INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956), directed by Don Siegel. But is this threat really a metaphor for Communism, or is it meant to represent Senator Joseph McCarthy and the Red Scare? Perhaps the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, or at least that’s somewhat the stance of our second film, THE BLOB (1988), directed by Chuck Russell, itself a remake of another 1950s Cold War metaphor. Of course, this is the 80s, and so Reagan is bound to come up a few times. From the early days of the Cold War to the final days, how has America’s shifting views of the Soviet Union affected the media we create? Is the greater threat an invading force, or is the call coming from inside the house? Let’s dig into the glorious sci-fi horror, mutts! 00:03:52 - Invasion of the Body Snatchers 00:38:01 - The Blob 00:56:04 - Comparisons 01:08:27 - Bone Reviews Follow us at: instagram.com/cadaverdogspod twitter.com/cadaverdogspod tiktok.com/@cadaverdogspod . This month, we’re joined by Joseph Hernandez, actor and festival programmer at Brooklyn Horror Film Festival and South By Southwest, to discuss the blurry lines between familial obligation and unhealthy codependent relationships. Do you like vampires? We do. But this isn’t your old school Hollywood Dracula, as Thomas’ nosferatitus is treated as a serious illness and strain on his siblings who now must murder on his behalf, in Jonathan Cuartas’ MY HEART CAN’T BEAT UNLESS YOU TELL IT TO (2020). Meanwhile, some hundred years prior and in the middle of the Spanish flu epidemic of World War I, Pearl finds herself trapped on her family farm and longing to be a star. But it's not about what she wants: it's about making the best of what she has. Mia Goth leads the Ti West-directed PEARL (2022). Are these relationships abuse? Is there hope for our protagonists to break free? When is it okay to let a family member go? What’s with Joe’s Jigsaw impression? Not for the ”feeble-minded!” This month, David and Devin are joined by writer/film critic Tori Potenza to talk about basically everything that’s horrible in America: systemic racism and white privilege. “Should we eugenics?” is a question posed when analyzing ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932), adapted from an H.G. Wells classic and notoriously banned when the Hays Code took effect. We hope for a more cheery analysis with the 2019 film US, written and directed by Jordan Peele, but find more of the same old systemic racism bullsh**. Happy Halloween!! Spooky Season 2023 has ended… which means Spooky Season 2024 is officially underway, and David and Devin are celebrating with two classic ghost stories: THE INNOCENTS (1961), directed by Jack Clayton, and THE HAUNTING (1963), directed by Robert Wise. Adapting two famous works of literature (Henry James’ The Turning of the Screw and Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, respectively), the black-and-white films have their female protagonists arrive at gorgeous old Victorian manors… and encounter ghosts? Hot takes incoming! David and Devin begin this month’s discussion with John Carpenter’s Stephen King adaptation CHRISTINE (1983). Classic nerd Arnie Cunningham has a killer new car - emphasis on “killer.” But when the self-driving self-healing automobile goes on a murderous rampage, and Arnie changes into a real jerk, are we sure it’s all Christine’s responsibility? Or has our geeky hero been hiding a darkness, a darkness which he is now embracing as he reaches maturity? Then, we’ll switch gears and decades to Lynn Ramsay’s disturbing psychological character study WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN (2011), starring Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly. Eva has raised a monster: her teenage son Kevin has murdered his classmates with a bow and arrow, and in the aftermath she recollects on his childhood. Was he always like this, or did she fail him as a mother? What motivated Kevin to shoot up his school? Move over Ant-Man: David and Rob are discussing the original shrinking Scott, of THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (1957). In director Jack Arnold and writer Richard Matheson’s scifi classic, a man exposed to stray radiation begins to steadily shrink, as his humanity is stripped away layer by layer. What makes a man, a man? We’re talking emasculation and the artificiality of the American Dream. Meanwhile, jumping across the Pacific, GODZILLA (1954, a.k.a. GOJIRA) uses its kaiju to directly comment on the atomic bomb and its fallout. The Cadaver Dogs want to see how both America and Japan evolved and responded to the devastation that followed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Mother Shelley of all questions: who is the monster - the creature or the man who made them? Or, in this episode, who is the barbarian and who is the muse?? Looking back at two top films from the past year, the Cadaver Dogs examine how the post #metoo era is presented in horror… through a male perspective. Travis Stevens’ artistic film A WOUNDED FAWN (starring Josh Ruben of Werewolves Within and Scare Me) sends us to a time when the Furies were feared by all and muses used their sexuality to inspire artists. We analyze the presence of ancient myths today, focusing in on the #MeToo movement with men’s abuse of female artists, how the women reclaimed their power, and how the men are adjusting. Then, join us down in the tunnels for BARBARIAN (starring scream kings Bill Skarsgaard and Justin Long). Down here, we have cancel culture, Frankenstein’s monster, male fragility, and false redemption. All-in-all, what we really ask is: do male filmmakers have a right to tell these stories now? And, what do they mean? At Cadaver Dogs, we ask the hard questions and have the hard conversations, but it’s all fun down here - we have cookies! Are you really going to re-use those needles? That’s the question we ask in this episode of Cadaver Dogs podcast where we cover not one but two reboots of classic horror franchises. First up, EVIL DEAD (2013), the Fede Alvarez remake of the Sam Raimi Classic. Does the classic cabin turned demon rehab hold up to the original violent entry? Second, we chain ourselves up for HELLRAISER (2022), the 11th entry and newest reboot of the Clive Barker series. Do these reboots do justice to these 80s classics? Hellraiser compares the pain of drug addiction to the highest highs of sensual sensation, and Evil Dead revisits possession using the metaphor of the overpowering effects of substance abuse. The power of Christ compels you! To celebrate the holidays, the Cadaver Dogs have a conversation about God… or rather, about a couple of horror films that are quite sold on “God is real.” THE EXORCIST (1973) is one of the most acclaimed movies in the genre, but does the plot basically boil down to an embrace of Catholic ideologies, or is there something deeper? As a film in the 70s, we will also bring in the Satanic Panic, as well as first wave feminism and how all these stray concepts interact. THE CONJURING (2013) doubles down on those religious themes, and even claims to be based on a true story, a claim we will most definitely be dissecting. The word “propaganda” may get thrown around, but do these movies qualify as propaganda? What does that even mean? A curse on you and your family! JK JK That’d be pretty terrible wouldn’t it? This month, the Cadaver Dogs explore two films dealing with ancient curses in which main characters trade their humanity - or lose it - and become a beast of vengeance! Starting way back to the classic Universal horror movie that started Hollywood’s love for werewolves with THE WOLF MAN (1941, dr. George Waggner). David, Devin, and Rob look at how WWII influenced the tragic figure of Larry Talbot and dig into the history of the Romani people. We also gawk at the stars that pack this film: Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi, AND Claude Raines?? Then, fast forward to the f*ed up 80s with creature feature (or slasher?) PUMPKINHEAD (1988, dir. Stan Winston). No Reagan talk this time, but we do touch on the Rust Belt. Do we find curses more tragic or vilifying? How are they a source of “othering” in horror? Back to where it all began… Camp Crystal Lake, otherwise known as Camp Blood. This is FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980). Slasher films are often discussed as a genre, but in 80s America they were also a movement, a response to the politics of the day. That’s right, we’re talking Ronald Reagan! Sex is sin, and teens who reject abstinence and fail to “say no to drugs” are the perfect victims for the Voorhees family. Then, we’re jumping ahead to remove the slasher from this context and see how those themes and tropes change. Ti West’s X (2022) is a newer film, but one we’re already excited to dig our paws into! Releasing this just ahead of the release of X’s prequel PEARL means we can examine the film unaffected by however the next film may change our interpretations. 0:08:11 - Friday the 13th 0:30:58 - X 0:49:45 - Comparisons 1:04:35 - Bone Reviews Up Next: THE WOLF MAN (1941) / PUMPKINHEAD (1988) Follow us at: instagram.com/cadaverdogspod twitter.com/cadaverdogspod facebook.com/cadaverdogspod . Horror has always been an outlet for political discussions during a time of crisis. This includes the decades-long abortion debate - how has horror covered this controversial topic? The Cadaver Dogs delve deep inside THE UNBORN CHILD, aka SOP DEK 2002 (2011) where they discuss the true abortion incident that inspired the Thai horror film (and also murdering ghost babies). Fact or propaganda! Only you can tell. Followed by the classic Frankenstein baby flick ITS ALIVE (1974) where the Dogs reflect on the influence of the recently passed Roe V Wade (1973) and the great Thalidomide scandal that changed the nation. Female power? Women having… a voice?? They must be the spawn of the devil! It’s an important time to talk about a woman’s autonomy and her right to choose. But unfortunately, it’s always been a controversial topic. The Cadaver Dogs analyze two horror films from two different decades and discuss how they portray the monstrous female. We also play our favorite game: Is This Film Feminist? First up is the original CARRIE (directed by Brian de Palma) which came out during the women’s lib movement of the 1970s. How does this film reflect the current cultural climate? Did Carrie choose to become a monster or was she f’d anyway? Then, we look at THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE (directed by Scott Derrickson) which came out 30 years later. How did the courtroom treat a misunderstood woman? And, hello! Is the movie religious propaganda?? There’s no wrong way to grieve, but there certainly is an unhealthy way. Say… calling on the power of demons/unknown cosmic forces to bring the dead back to life only to have them go on a murder spree. That’s pretty unhealthy, don’t you think? The Cadaver Dogs take a trip to the afterlife in this episode as they walk through the many examples of grief in two horror film staples. First up is the original Ari Aster movie HEREDITARY (starring Toni Colette, Gabriel Byrne, Milly Shapiro, Alex Wolff, and indie film bae Ann Dowd.) We tackle the origins of the demon Paimon, voyeurism through filmmaking, misconceived spiritualism, and the concept of tragedy. Then, we take a not so big leap to Mary Lambert’s PET SEMETARY (1989) adapted from Stephen King’s novel. The dogs offer a fresh perspective on industrialism, gender representation of yore, Native American burial ground tropes, and just how much parents royally f*** up. In 1938, Orson Welles directed and narrated an adaptation of “War of the Worlds” for a radio broadcast. However, listeners did not understand what they were hearing, and believed aliens were actually attacking! Panic ensued. For this very special episode of Cadaver Dogs Pod, we will be talking about something else entirely. From Ed Wood to James Nguyen, it’s time we dig into the deep social and economic commentaries of PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1957) and BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR (2010). Though we will of course explain why the filmmaking in these works is so effective, we will primarily be exploring the heavy topics of nuclear war, climate change, and the terrifying existential question: What if humanity IS the virus? The 80s were more than just sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll… but let’s be honest, it was mostly that.. Rob and Devin are joined by guest Chris Guzzo (Pod From the Crypt) to talk metal-sploitation horror. (David is off directing a horror movie - send him some love!) In this episode, we dive into how both these films embrace the anti-establishment principle of horror movies and metal music. For BLACK ROSES, a Troma release, we discuss generational hypocrisy and the music censorship movement led by Tipper Gore - as well as the killer special effects and creature design. For WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS, starring Alexandra Daddario,Johnny Knoxville, and Taylor Swift’s brother, we discuss the satanic panic, TV evangelists, and rebelling against “the man”. We also touch on the use of nudity in these films… quite a bit. (Also, congratulate us! We did an 80s episode without mentioning Reagan for once!) . “Never believe what you publish, and never publish what you believe.” These are the words of wisdom echoed by tabloid journalists everywhere… and maybe even by “legitimate” reporters? In an age where fake news persists, by what skewered code does the media abide? What lines will journalists cross, and who might they hurt in the process? Bad acting. Bad scripts. INCREDIBLE effects. The Cadaver Dogs take a schlock-tastic voyage during their analysis of two international cult classics. What makes these movies so bad they’re good? Or, so bad they’re… well, bad? By stripping down to the bare bones of Stuart Gordan’s DAGON (2001) and Umberto Lenzi’s NIGHTMARE CITY (1980), you see the necessities of a horror film. The Dogs analyze the creature design, film direction (what an odd approach to dubbing), and fear tactics that have made these films “guilty pleasures” for horror fans. During their dive into Dagon, an adaptation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft, they talk xenophobia and fear of the other. While Nightmare City makes them question the boundaries of exploitation films and if action horror should be a considerable genre. . Up Next: THE INVITATION (2015) / THE SACRAMENT (2013) . Want a date? But with whom? What are the ideals and standards of perfection that men hold women to in modern society? The Cadaver Dogs are pulling back the curtains on the unrealistic expectations we hold in relationships, and the destructive – sometimes explosive – consequences. There have been many interpretations of Takashi Miike’s AUDITION (1999) over the years, and oh boy do we have thoughts! On the total opposite of the spectrum lies FRANKENHOOKER (1990), the title and plot of which writer-director Frank Henenlotter improvised during a pitch meeting. Praise films and silence the voice(s) speaking inside your head for the very first Cadaver Dogs episode of the New Year! Devin, David and Rob are getting spiritual with last year's SAINT MAUD, the first feature by promising new filmmaker Rose Glass. The film follows a young medical aid who believe she has direct communication with God himself, and it is her duty to share this gift. What's better than voices in one person's head you ask, why it's a union of voices born of a marriage gone awry upon an isolated island. In Ingmar Burgman's HOUR OF THE WOLF, we attempt to understand something about this strange horror story by the film master. Stick around horror hounds while we discuss religion, the value of pain, and whole host of interpretations in these metaphor lanced insanity flicks. “They’re he-e-e-e-ere!!” Why is it that every possible line is a lot scarier when uttered by a child? There’s no one on this planet who was not a kid at some point, and most kiddos are perfectly innocent bundles of joy. And yet… Rob and David team up with guest star Brandon Christensen, writer/director of Shudder exclusive SUPERHOST, to countdown their top 3 children of horror! Jingle Bells! Twilight smells! Brundle-Fly laid an egg! Patrick Bateman killed his date, and Luke Lerner got away! ’Tis the season, and whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or none of the above, the Cadaver Dogs are here for this final episode of the year to talk about psychopaths. (What’d you expect? Family and togetherness?) Psychopathy is a real illness, but what does it mean when someone lacks empathy? Does this excuse the terrible behavior of the men in these movies? Or are they just expressing their fragile toxic masculinity, no different from any other misogynist? In Mary Harron’s AMERICAN PSYCHO (2000), a brilliantly crazed Christian Bale guides us through these questions and more. We discuss serial killers, privilege, homophobia, and of course author Bret Easton Ellis, upon whose novel the film is based. But perhaps it’s BETTER WATCH OUT (2016) where we find a more realistic example of budding psychopathy, forcing us to turn to our textbooks to check if it’s even possible to diagnose a literal child. Both men impose their will upon the women in their lives, treating them (and really everyone) as mere objects to be owned. Do they even know it’s Christmas?? Get your test tubes, beakers, and radioactive chemicals ready, because this week we’re talking about ‘30s and ‘50s science-fiction! Einstein had only just published his theory of relativity, the atom was in the process of being split, and outer space had yet to be explored. Science was scary then, for it was unknown what dangers we’d uncover. Even looking back now, the question remains: Did we make a mistake? Should we continue to venture into infinity, or else when does science go too far? In Vincent Price-starring THE TINGLER (1959), directed by the master of gimmicks William Castle, a coroner dares to push ethical boundaries as he uncovers a spine-crushing bug that lives inside all of us and feeds on our fear. Then the Dogs jumps back to Frankenstein director James Whale’s THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933) -- the one with Claude Rains (no offense to Elisabeth Moss) -- where an insane physicist wields his newfound superpower to terrorize humanity in a maddening crime spree of havoc. Announcing next week's films: THE TINGLER (1959, dir. William Castle) THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933, dir. James Whale) The mad scientist trope has been done again and again over horror history. (Starting, of course, with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein but then seen in favorites such as: Re-Animator, The Fly, Human Centipede...) But what makes this trope worth revisiting? We'll be looking back at these classic movies to see how the eras influenced changes in the trope and questioned the ethics of science. That's next Thursday on Cadaver Dogs. The famous horror trope goes like this: you have sex you die (thank you Randy Meeks). But sometimes sex isn’t your choice, and the uncontrollable fear that you experience after the trauma will haunt you for the rest of your life… how doe final girls handle it? This week, the Cadaver Dogs dive into the repercussions of sex and sexual trauma with TEETH (2007) and IT FOLLOWS (2014). Devin, David, and Rob cover the irresponsibility of victim blaming, the evolution of rape culture, and sexual education in the new millenium. We even jump back in time to the origins of Medusa - how messed up is that Greek myth? What’s so scary about scary movies? In this special Halloween treat, the Dogs look to finally answer that tricky question, by turning to the ultimate masters of fear: John Carpenter and Wes Craven. First, the latest novel from a prolific horror writer - akin to Stephen King or H.P. Lovecraft - springs to life, driving fans to insanity and threatening the apocalypse. John Carpenter's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (1994), a surrealist cosmic horror starring Sam Neill, explores what would happen if our creations were more than fiction, and where exactly lies that blurry line between fantasy and truth. What if, by believing in something, we can reshape reality? What even is reality? Then, we turn to Fred Krueger and the beloved A Nightmare On Elm Street franchise with Wes Craven's NEW NIGHTMARE (1994). Heather Langenkamp (better known as Nancy Thompson) deals with her anxieties as her past work strikes back with a vengeance, and Freddy - the real Freddy! - emerges from his fictional dreamscape to torture Heather and her family. Only Craven himself has the answer. Both movies came out the same year (with the same effects teams!) and we of course must ask what the HELL happened that allowed for such a surreal cosmic coincidence! We’ll discuss religion and faith, trauma and healing, censorship and expression, and the philosophies that drive us rabid fans back to our favorite genre over and over again. Sin was born in the Garden of Eden. But whether it was Adam or Eve who brought about sin is still an argument we are hearing today. History is horror. Greedy men fight for land, for power. Those who step out of line are often executed. War robs children of their parents. Freedom loses to fascism. What can we do to persevere? What use is our religion but as a tool of our oppressors? Can we fight totalitarianism with disobedience? Can even our fairy tales find light in the darkest of times? The Cadaver Dogs dive into some of their favorite flicks! First is Academy Award winner Guillermo Del Toro’s dark fantasy, PAN’S LABYRINTH (2006), mistranslated from the original title, “El Laberinto Del Fauno” or “The Labyrinth of the Faun”. Set in Franco’s Spain, a dictatorship which emerged after the Spanish Civil War, Ofelia explores a magical gateway in hopes of escaping her reality to a better plane. We then jump forward to the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War in UNDER THE SHADOW (2016), a BAFTA winning film from director Babak Anvari. Here the ghostly djinn are as malicious as the bombs and missiles dropping on Tehran, as themes of motherhood and feminism emerge to the front line. We’ll highlight these concepts and discuss both movies’ use of symbolism and metaphor, as well as provide some useful historical context. Which is stronger: harsh reality or gorgeous fantasy? “Francisco Franco and the Spanish Civil War,” by Khan Academy youtu.be/TYke_R9_ar8 “Why Iranian women are posting pictures of their uncovered hair,” by Vox youtu.be/PNdwFftpndM “March 8, 1979 Iranian Women March Against Hijab and Islamic Laws,” by Arjang Sepasi (translation of report on Women’s March) youtu.be/pxGYLk92edY Up Next: ANTICHRIST (2009) / THE SCREWFLY SOLUTION (2005) Follow us at: instagram.com/cadaverdogspod twitter.com/cadaverdogspod facebook.com/cadaverdogspod Send us your film suggestions at: cadaverdogspodcast@gmail.com Cover art by Omri Kadim. NO SPOILERS! We're celebrating our summer at the beach that makes you old, with M. Night Shyamalan's new release, OLD! This is a spoiler-free review, but be warned: our opinions are split (no pun intended). David, Devin, and Rob will talk about existential dread and body horror, and what makes them interesting. We also discuss where Old stands among Shyamalan's other films, and which ones are our favorites. Here's a plot twist: one of us actually likes The Happening! What is a Frankenstein movie? Is it only those with “Frankenstein” in the title, Boris Karloff in the cast? Is it anything with a mad scientist and a monster of their own creation? But what even is a monster? Devin and Rob are joined by guest star Nora Unkel, director of the surreal Mary Shelley film A Nightmare Wakes (now streaming on Shudder and VOD), to countdown their Top 3 movies of the genre! We’ll also go over the themes of the novel to see how these relate to the adaptations and reinterpretations of the material. What do these stories say when told in different contexts over different decades? CONTENT WARNING: Miscarriage and rape are discussed. When society silenced voices out of fear, horror films became a vessel for the queer community to speak out. This week, Cadaver Dogs look at FRIGHT NIGHT (1985) and THE LOST BOYS (1987) through the lens of queer culture in the 80s and the effects the AIDS epidemic. How do these films rebel against the typical nuclear family? Why was queerness suddenly pushed to subtext? And how were vampires the perfect monster to personify LGBTQIA+ people during a time when they were threatened and powerless against the socio-political agenda? Of course, we get sidetracked with fanning over SFX makeup, vampire lore, Vincent Price, Sax Man, and Rob's perfect Corey Feldman impression. Now we’ll see if you have the knowledge it takes to compete in a fun trivia competition instead! Because game shows don’t have enough horror. We’ll be covering everything from Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street to It Follows and Get Out; from Stephen King to John Carpenter; from Dracula and Frankenstein to Re-Animator. David leads this contest as co-hosts Devin and Rob pit their scary movie knowledge against guest star Jeremiah Kipp, director of upcoming monster movie Slapface. But there can only be one winner. We know you’re listening to this episode through some sort of device, and, in a way, is that not a vicarious means of entering our conversation, a voyeuristic connection to other humans? Devin, David and Rob discuss the nature of technology and human connection through the lens of two technohorror films this week in Episode 5 of Cadaver Dogs. First, the hounds explore the dark underbelly of webcam lifestyle in the doppelganger fueled thriller Cam. Released in 2018, directed by Daniel Goldhaber and partially based on the real-life experiences of screenwriter Isa Mazzei, a working cam-girl discovers someone else is posting videos on her account, and that person looks unmistakably like herself. Next, we sink our teeth into the obscure surrealist J-Horror Ghost film Pulse, as known as Kairo. Released in 2001, written and directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Pulse follows a group of young adults dealing with a world devoid of human connect and invaded by ghosts. In 1981, Arne Cheyenne Johnson was tried for murder. He entered a plea of “Not Guilty,” on the basis of demonic possession. Ed and Lorraine Warren claimed to have proof. David and Rob chat the new Conjuring movie (directed by Michael Chaves, starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson), in this bonus minisode! The first section is NON-SPOILER, and we’ll give our bone reviews before moving onto more in-depth spoiler discussion and analysis. Stick around till the end, and Devin will announce our films for next week! How does Chaves’ direction hold up against James Wan’s first two installments? Tying into last week’s exploration of The Amityville Horror and The Town That Dreaded Sundown, we also ask what changes were made to the true crime, and what does it mean when filmmakers deviate from reality? Were the Warrens really the saints the franchise indicates, or was there something even more sinister afoot? CONTENT WARNING: Abuse of a minor. Filmmakers are often inspired by true events, but THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979) and THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN (1976) are advertised to be dreadfully close to the gruesome tales they’re based on. What ethical obligation does the storyteller have when adapting real life horror? What justifies the art? And is any of this even moral? We go deep into the paranormal conspiracy of the Lutz family with The Amityville Horror directed by Stuart Rosenberg and starring Margot Kidder and James Brolin. Then chat the sensationalized The Town That Dreaded Sundown, directed by Charles B. Pierce, which is based on the tragic Texarkana Moonlight Murders committed by a serial killer. We also touch on the Conjuring favorites Ed and Lorraine Warren in anticipation for the Conjuring 4 releasing this week. CONTENT WARNING: Abuse. There have been three adaptations of John Campbell’s short story: THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951), THE THING (1982), and THE THING (2011). Just like their monster, these movies shapeshift with their era: Is the alien a metaphor for the atom bomb, or Communism? Masculinity or feminism? Across these decades, each movie showcases wildly different special and visual effects, while tackling the themes of their era. We discuss how the classic 50s sci-fi, directed by Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks, pits scientists against the military, while John Carpenter’s remake, starring Kurt Russell, Keith David, and Donald Moffat, replaces propaganda with a brooding atmosphere. We then explore womanhood and studio interference in the 2011 prequel, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Egerton. Ireland’s rich history has spawned an expansive mythology, inspiring both THE HALLOW (2015) and LEPRECHAUN (1993). Devin, David, and Rob want to know how these films incorporate their fairy tale origins: Aren’t these stories meant for children? Or was there always something dark and terrifying lurking behind the magic? We discuss how director Corin Hardy uses fairies and changelings as a parallel for British imperialism and nature’s battle against technology in his indie starring Joseph Mawle and Bojana Novakovic,. Then we come back to the United States, and dig into how Americans appropriated the image of the leprechaun and the immigrant, culminating in the campy 90s slasher, directed by Mark Jones and starring Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston (in her acting debut!) In our first episode, the Cadaver Dogs (Devin, David, and Rob) compare the classist themes in READY OR NOT (2019) and SOCIETY (1989). Demonic devotion or trans-species relation: what is the source of our class struggles? Do the rich really feed upon the poor? And how does our political era affect the horror genre? We explore the flawed belief systems of the wealthy and the fear of Trumpism when digging into Radio Silence’s film starring Samara Weaving, Adam Brody and Andie MacDowell. Then, we go back to the Saved by The Bell surf 80s, Reaganomics era and dive into the incestuous aristocracy through Brian Yuzna’s body horror camp classic starring Billy Warlock.
