Starting as a marketing analyst at Papa John's, Victoria worked there for over 15 years eventually landing up at the top as their Chief of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. And she continues to make strides now working as Beam Suntory's first Chief D&I Officer. Victoria has so much to share, everything from walking into a big PR controversy to stepping into a new organization and learning what they are really about. Her career has been so wide-spanning, and I learned so many insights about the exodus in DEI. Even cooler, Victoria shares her reflective experience with a recent mini-sabbatical - so cool. Look no further for the ULTIMATE conversation on talent. No, this is not a breakdown of American Idol - I'm talking about recruitment! In this episode, I am joined by Diane Dagher, the Associate Vice President of Talent Acquisition at ModMed. It's rare you find somebody who deeply shares your passion, but Diane really gets it. When Diane first started at ModMed 13 years ago, she was working alongside 20 people. Now, the company has grown to 2,000. She shares with me how she got into the talent acquisition industry and what makes a great TA function. Diane really knows her stuff and has so many great insights to offer. Every week, my mind is blown by the amazing guests we have on the podcast 🤯 And this week on Hire Learning was no different with Karen Ancira, the Chief People Officer at KFC US. I loved having the opportunity to hear about her incredible journey from working at Pepsi for 8 years to shifting over to KFC and working her way up the C-Suite ladder all the way to the US market. We talked about everything from building culture, how she's traveled the world with her family, and even how she's learned to be her authentic self. This was truly an inspiring discussion and I'm so grateful Karen came on to share her story and insights! It's crazy to think that direct mail advertising feels so archaic today. Since those beginning days, marketing has become elaborate billboards, sponsored posts across social media, TikTok brand accounts attempting humor, and even AI-driven campaigns. We've come a long way... And Jay Schwedelson has been around to watch this insane marketing evolution. Jay is the founder of GURU Media Hub, President and CEO of Outcome Media, AND the founder of Subjectline.com. Yeah, this guy's the real deal. It was so awesome to have Jay on Hire Learning and pick his brain on everything from personal branding tips, to direct mail and the future of marketing. He even clues us in on what he would change about the reality show "Love is Blind" 😂 - tune in to hear his take! Wondering how AI will impact your business? Leave it to Jig Patel, the Global Chief Technology Officer of Morningstar Technologies, to break it down for you. Jig is a fantastic speaker and has incredible experience in the financial services world and technology. It was great to have the opportunity to pick his brain on this week's episode of Hire Learning! We discussed the future of business with AI in the picture and, more generally, what he's looking for from people he hires into his team. I love when I have the chance to reconnect with a blast from the past in my life...especially to catch up live on my podcast! In this week's episode of Hire Learning, I sat down with Curtis Weeks, who I worked with back in the day at Restaurant Brands International. Now, Curtis is killing it as the CEO of New Reach Education. On the episode, we have the privilege of hearing how Curtis is building an incredible community through great talent, how he's working to elevate the company's status and a bunch of insights into being a total operating guru! We even throw it back to the time he spent working as a district manager at Walmart. It was super fun to have Curtis on the pod, and I know you will learn a lot (as I did) from his story. If you haven't heard of the HR Star, where have you been? On this week's episode of Hire Learning, we catch up with Kelly Tucker, the founder and MD of HR consultancy HR Star... Also known for her LinkedIn virality - which I HAD to probe her on in this episode 😂 Beyond her great engagement on LinkedIn, Kelly, also has an amazing journey to share about how she got into HR and founded her company! Like many of us, Kelly had a squiggly career path before ultimately landing in the world of entrepreneurship, and those make for the best stories. We also chat about why HR is such an important function in any organization, how to make sure you are bringing in the best talent, and why taking care of your employees is great for your bottom line. Want some free advice to advance your career? Never Eat Alone. If you're sitting alone having lunch, you're missing out on countless networking opportunities. I've always believed in this, but it was super refreshing to hear it from Roxanna Flores on the latest episode of Hire Learning; she should know a thing or two about networking, given her previous tenure as Chief People + Culture Officer at The Messenger. We had a great conversation about a whole range of things... biases in the media, how to craft a company's culture from scratch, the art of being courageous as a leader, and a chance encounter she once had with Sting. Early in your career? You'd better start building relationships. That's the advice from Florencia Stanfield, Chief DE&I Officer over at Vitesco Technologies. She'd know a thing or two about how to integrate when you're early on in your career. I had a great discussion with Florencia about the developments we've seen in organizations surrounding diversity; her own hiring philosophies; and naturally, I had to remind her how much better the weather is in Florida than Michigan. Hey ChatGPT,... You're probably hearing these words a lot at the moment, and my guest on today's episode is working with generative AI and developing it every day. Blake Janover has been in Commercial Real Estate for his entire career, from filing for bankruptcy in his 20s all the way to recently getting his current company listed on the NASDAQ. You could say he knows a thing or two about it. But more recently, Janover Inc has been developing its own generative AI tool, and it is revolutionizing the sector. You can be an exec in someone else's company and find hiring really easy. But you can also be a Founder of your own company and find hiring one of the hardest things you've ever done. Jimmy Speyer, Co-Founder of GlassHouse.Biz did just that, and to be honest, I hope you appreciate his candour as much as I did! We had a wonderful conversation about: - Jimmy's hiring philosophy. - How to set expectations upfront. - Moving into the start-up scene in Nashville. - Build a team and engage them whether you're in the office or at home. In a world of AI-generated content, you have to trust your instincts to know if something is fake. The most important question you can ask a candidate at interview is simple. What questions do you have for me? This tells you: - How curious they are. - How much they care about the role. - How they vet employers. AKA do they have integrity about their place of work. - Have they bothered to research the company over just checking the website. The best candidates will interview you to be their next employer, just as much as you’ll interview them to be your next employee. Give it a listen and let me know your thoughts, I LOVE talking to founders for this reason. The insights in this episode are awesome! If you’re doing more than 25% of the talking in an interview, stop talking. That’s what Karen Viera says anyway. And she’d know a thing or two about hiring, as the Global Chief People Officer and Senior Vice President of Church’s Chicken, somewhere I love to grab a bite to eat. Karen came on the Hire Learning Podcast to give us some nuggets of wisdom (pun not intended) that she’s picked up over the course of her more than 20-year long career in HR. She wholeheartedly believes in the importance of connecting with employees at all levels of an organization, and told us a little about Church’s new All Stars and Legends programs for longstanding employees. Oh, and of course we touched on the future of hiring from the technology aspect. I think Karen will be keeping her trusty notepad to hand for the foreseeable future, but that’s not to say she doesn’t see the value. Everyone makes mistakes in business. It’s a statistical inevitability. The difference between a run-of-the-mill HR employee and a future C-Suite Leader is understanding that. If you go into every interview terrified of making the wrong hire, you’re never going to build an all-star team, taking those risks is what leads to that. My guest this week on Hire Learning is Annabel Tsang, VP of Sales Effectiveness at Keurig Dr Pepper, and all-round corporate guru. We delved into everything from what life was like for her growing up age 12 working in her family’s restaurant, to how you overcome the challenges of moving around the world, to her favorite parts of living in California. This conversation really made me think about my own value system and how I lead my organization, and I’m pretty sure it’ll do the same for you too. Hope you enjoy it! It's very easy to draw the wrong conclusions from data for any number of reasons. Maybe the dataset is wrong to start with. Maybe you’ve interpreted it wrong. But when you get it right, data is THE single biggest value tool you have as a company. This week’s episode of Hire Learning features Peter Fishman, co-founder of Mozart Data. After working at a whole host of companies from international powerhouses like Shell, all the way down to independents with less than ten employees, Fish saw the opportunity to build a business that would make data way easier to take advantage of. Let’s be honest, hiring without data is pointless, so I’m sure you can see why I was so excited to have this conversation with Fish. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on this episode! "Skills" has become the latest buzzword that the working world has villanized in the last few years. And while the argument for hiring for attitude over skills is still incredibly strong, it doesn't mean we should be ignoring the power of a skillset (and the development of that skillset) that an employee can bring to your organization. In this week's episode of Hire Learning, I speak to Darren Lang. Founder and CEO of Kepler + Co. Kepler + Co take the emotion out of hiring for skill, and developing skills while someone is under your employment. Instead it becomes about data. It becomes about removing bias and finding the best solution (and skills) for everyone. Something you guys know I'm very passionate about. Hope you enjoy this one! On today’s episode, our host, Oz Rashid, welcomes Joe Aurilia, Jr. , Senior Vice President of Operations at Cyware , a cybersecurity company focusing on Cyber Fusion and collective defense. Having joined the company as the first US hire, Joseph talks about the challenges and opportunities of working in a geographically dispersed workforce with offices across multiple countries. Joe’s overall hiring philosophy revolves around considering whether he could have enjoyable and productive conversations with potential candidates on a regular basis. This approach holds true regardless of the candidate's location, as collaboration and communication are essential in any team. Joe mentions that they use an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) to keep track of candidates and their hiring progress. His interview notes are entered into the ATS for collaboration with the rest of the hiring team. Joe’s advice for those early in their careers is to have more conversations with people outside their field of expertise and learn from different perspectives. Building a professional network and seeking mentorship and guidance from others can help individuals grow and succeed in their careers. On the newest episode of Hire Learning, our host, Oz Rashid, is joined by Leslie Graham , Chief Human Resources Officer at Groups Recover Together , the premier provider of value-based care for individuals grappling with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) across the nation. Leslie started her career in retail, but while she was supposed to be focusing on sales and operations, she loved hanging out with the team members. Realizing this, she decided HR was the path for her. Leslie believes the hiring process starts with connecting with the whole person. Her interview strategy revolves around the fact that the candidate is interviewing her as much as the other way around. Oz and Leslie each share stories about the toughest feedback they ever received. In both cases, it was a humbling experience that they each walked away from having learned a valuable lesson. Leslie likes to make sure she hires a diverse group of talent in her organization, so all the different perspectives and experiences can come together to produce great results. Leslie and her team are excited about starting a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative at her company. On today’s episode, our host, Oz Rashid, welcomes Kristin Forney , Chief Financial Officer at Ocean Spray Cranberries , an agricultural cooperative of cranberry growers headquartered in Massachusetts. She discusses her background in consumer packaged goods, her CFO role, lessons learned in finance, preparing for interviews, hiring and career advice for those just starting out. Kristin talks about the impact growing up on a farm had on her career and how it taught her to work hard and the importance of values. Kristin has been involved in many hires, and as such, explains what she looks for in candidates, calling desired traits “athletic intangibles,” such as versatility, differentiating factors and people who have the potential to blossom into leadership roles in the future. She always looks for the candidate’s “superpower,” for multiple reasons. For example, when the candidate is in touch with what makes them unique, it shows how self-aware they are. The key for her is to see how a candidate’s superpower can be beneficial to their team, and what the person can bring to the team that may be missing. Kristin says, “If they're bringing something different to the table, that elevates everybody's game.” Kristin Forney - https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristin-forney-6789b34/ Ocean Spray Cranberries - https://www.linkedin.com/company/ocean-spray-cranberries/ Connect with our host, Oz Rashid, on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ozrashid. On this episode, your host Oz Rashid is joined by David Lu , Co-Founder & CEO of Clarity Movement Co . — a team of passionate engineers and scientists focused on making a positive impact in the world by tackling the global air pollution crisis using air-sensing technology, IoT devices, and data analytics — to discuss progress and acceleration via hiring in this space. Something you'll find a lot with people who hire is job insecurity. They don't always want to hire people they think may advance over them, but David explains why hiring people better than you puts the company on an upward trajectory, taking the company to the next stage. As CEO, a role he has been in for the last nine years, Oz wanted to know how David stands out amongst his peers. His answer was simple and profound: persistence. Simply showing up every day is how he has built a successful business that started in his school-going days. David shares how he finds out the true motivation for candidates wanting to work for the company. This is a vital step because, in the environmental tech space, it is essential that employees care about the same values, as this is what drives performance. He describes how they make the company’s mission intrinsic to company culture by sharing firsthand how their customers use their products. On this episode, your host, Oz Rashid, is joined by Jequeatta Upton Smith , Vice President of Operations at Advocate Health Care , a non-profit healthcare system. They discuss inclusivity, diversity, interview questions to determine resiliency, affinity bias and hiring technology. Jequeatta describes what makes inclusion critical in healthcare and shares favorite interview tricks for determining resiliency in candidates. She explains why she hires for diversity of thought, background and experience over skill, which can be taught. She goes on to share how affinity basis in an interview process can lead to hiring misses when the candidate is simply a smooth talker. Jequeatta speaks about how she gives people a realistic understanding of what it's like to work with her and at the company. One way she does so is by including a panel of the candidate’s direct reports and relying a lot on the feedback from the panel. On this episode, our host, Oz Rashid, is joined by Daniel Murray , Founder of The Marketing Millennials — a digital marketing agency — to discuss marketing and recruitment. The discussion centers on the advantages and disadvantages of analytics, branding, core principles of building personal brands, and that the marketing function should be enmeshed with recruitment. Daniel, a former D1 athlete, explains the value of a sports background in entrepreneurship, and how it teaches you to push yourself further than you may normally go. He shares the qualities he looks for when hiring candidates and why he believes in hiring for attitude over skill, and what makes consistency most important to him. Oz and Daniel speak about how you can “miss” in hires by making the assumption that if a candidate was educated at a top-notch university, or worked for an exceptional company, that they crushed it in those environments, but it is within those parameters that Daniel has experienced the most misses. Oz and Patricia chat about due diligence in acquisitions because the people aspect tends to be the toughest, and how bringing two cultures together with different services and offerings, will ultimately be the “make or break.” Patricia advises that to avoid future problems, it is wise not to underestimate non-technical due diligence — for example; the people, processes and integration of systems. Patricia is a big believer in listening to your gut when making hiring decisions. She explains to leaders how they can ensure that can trust the hiring capability of directors, managers and whoever else is on their team. Donna was with the same company for close to 27 years, where she experienced 15 different roles before setting up her current business. Now she coaches people who want to get to the C-suite level, guiding them as to how they can stay true to themselves on that journey. We chat about her almost-27-year career with one company and how it was a two-way street of career progression. Donna explains in detail what it’s like being a Chief Risk Officer, which was her role before running Freddie Mac’s residential mortgage business and ultimately becoming an entrepreneur. Donna shares her hiring philosophy which is based primarily on considering the current team composition, and how the candidate will complement it. Insight and visibility with candidates are also top priorities for Donna. She says that it’s critical to align candidate expectations or you could end up hiring the wrong person. With me, your host Oz Rashid (although I’m not so sure I was the host for this one…!), is Lisa Lou , Vice President at a global security organization. Lisa is a phenomenal communicator, exceptional at extracting information and really listening. So much so, that I got lost in the conversation and forgot we were doing a podcast about hiring. The discussion is frank, insightful and deep, and I’m pretty sure you won’t want to miss a word of it. It covers stuff like building for legacy vs. ambition and how hiring staff for your business fits into either of those goals, how self-awareness impacts the way you hire, and how interviewing makes you smart. Lisa has learned incredible life lessons and shares some of them on this show. A couple of examples are: don’t ask people who are already accomplished to prove anything to you in the hiring process and mentor those just starting out in the workplace. She offers three pointers for career starters: 1) Be intentional 2) Build a board that helps guide you to your goals and 3) Be true to yourself. She asks thought-provoking questions. Klowt’s hiring philosophy is that both sides need to benefit, so they utilize a unique methodology that ensures the candidate feels heard and at the same time, enables Klowt to identify the qualities of candidates. Amelia explains what happens during a new employee’s first week and how the business uses it as a mechanism for constant improvement. She delves into how Klowt cares for its team in ways that are meaningful to each individual, and recounts how she dealt with gender prejudice way back when and what she learned from it. With me [your host Oz Rashid] on this episode, I am joined by Jeff Nadler , Chief Information Officer at Teladoc Health — a telemedicine and virtual healthcare company — to speak about scaling, supply and demand, and innovating on the fly during Covid. Jeff shares with me his “art versus science” in hiring and says that when he started at Teladoc Health, there were a total of 30 employees. Fast forward to today: they’re a global company with more than 5,000 employees worldwide. The discussion, fast-paced and fun, centers on how weird stuff (experiences) can change your life, how memorable moments (the good, the bad and the ugly) help people improve, and how candidate experiences make or break the end goal (a company may lose out on a great candidate if the person has a poor interview experience). A damn fun interview with a Problem Solver who is passionate about technology and people. With me [your host Oz Rashid] on this episode I am joined by Deanna Meador , CEO at Couture Technologies — virtual try-on technology — and Director of Entrepreneurship at Vanderbilt University — a private research university in Nashville — to speak about her dual roles and involvement with hundreds of hires. Some of what she shares is her hiring strategy, including sourcing high-demand skills. Deanna describes the details around the questions she asks when interviewing and explains why she focuses on good fit over anything else. Her strategies work — her technology company has a 95% retention rate due to creating an environment where people find meaning in their work and by offering a competitive wage. I asked Deanna to outline the tenets of a good candidate experience in the interview process, which she did, and says that, “those responsible should take care of the little things in order to streamline the candidate experience.” A great interview with this CEO, inventor and entrepreneur extraordinaire. What kind of talent does it take to solve the world’s water crisis? Eric Rosenfeldt , CEO at Magna Imperio Systems Corp ., talks with Oz about seeking alignment between a candidate’s core values and those of the organization to help achieve strategic outcomes. Eric shares strategies for balancing structured and open-ended interview questions to uncover characteristics like humility, confidence, high emotional intelligence and a teachable spirit. He also talks about the two biggest contributing factors to making the wrong hire — rushing through the process and not collaborating with others. Oz and Eric discuss how the candidate experience should bring substance to the job description and give potential hires a clear understanding of what real life will be like in the role. They also touch on what MI actually does, Eric’s day-to-day life as CEO, and why, as an early investor, he was really investing in the talent. PI offers a variety of tools and assessments that help organizations solve business problems through the lens of understanding individuals. Transparency is key to Matt’s hiring philosophy. He discusses business challenges openly with candidates: how can you hire a good problem-solver if you spend the entire interview process hiding all the problems? When candidates are open and honest in return, both parties can evaluate each other for real fit. Matt and Oz also talk about Matt’s career journey from the Marines to a Ph.D. in psychology and to software. Seed Health is a microbiome company focused on developing or pioneering “living medicine.” Most people are familiar with probiotics, but Seed Health is taking the science even further by pioneering new ways for microbes to help alleviate a variety of medical conditions. Your organization’s hiring process is its canary in the coal mine. It is a candidate’s first impression of your company’s culture, values, and commitment to a positive employee experience. It also impacts how that candidate will engage with you in the future–as an employee or as a consumer. Hiring decisions are some of the most important decisions any business leader will make. Sam Jaddi believes that hiring the right talent has been the secret to his own success, too. As SVP and CIO for home security solutions provider ADT, he is charged with leading digital transformation throughout the organization. Having the right talent to execute internal and customer-facing initiatives is critical. In this episode, MSH founder and CEO Oz Rashid talks to Sam about why hiring is so important and what companies risk when they don’t prioritize it. Sam shares his hiring philosophy (character matters!), recounts some of his best and worst interview experiences, and answers the age-old question: are interviews over restaurant meals really a good idea?
