After almost 12 years, Bedford & Sullivan Brooklyn's Blogtalkradio run comes to an end. All starting with a desire to keep the audience active listeners in the Brooklyn Dodgers TV series research process, the guests we've had have been beyond my imagination, including Brooklyn historian Ron Schweiger , Dodgers pitcher Carl Erskine and Brooklynite/Dodgers fan Larry King . One of the ever-recurring guests has been Dodgers superfan Robert Barnes (who appears in the Larry King episode linked above.) He joins me on what was supposed to be the last blogtalkradio show to discuss the podcast itself, talking with Larry King on the last episode we ever did with him, the Dodgers 2024 World Series run, the late Carl Erskine, our Brooklyn buddy Mike Lecolant, plus much more. So, join us for what was supposed to be the final blogtalkradio episode of the Bedford & Sullivan podcast, but instead is the first Buzzsprout one. It's been a wild ride. This week on the Bedford & Sullivan podcast, we welcome Fort Hamilton native and NYC theater artist Stephan Morrow.Ironically meeting him serendiptiously at a cafè at the base of the Hollywood sign in LA, Stephan moved to Shore Road and 96th St in Brooklyn at age 5, going to school with Duke Snider's kids. After his parents split up when he was 8th grade, Brooklyn slowly faded from his life after getting into Stuyvesant High School, but left an indellible impact on the rest of it. We keep chugging with the research as we get a little exposition and context to the Brooklyn we explore in the 20th century. Brooklyn Trolley Blogger Mike Lecolant takes on his first Bedford & Sullivan hosting duties with author Andrew Schiff, writer of "The Father of Baseball: A Biography of Henry Chadwick."Mr. Chadwick, who is credited with inventing what we now know as the box score of each game, contributed numerous ideas to the development of what became the modern, organized game of base ball, evolved from many bat and ball games over history but finely tuned during the industrial revolution of the 19th century. We'll touch on Chadwick's early life, moving to Brooklyn at age 12 from Exeter, England, as well as how he became as woven into this sport as the seams on the ball. So, please, join us LIVE at 3:30pm ET for the latest edition of the Bedford & Sullivan podcast!

The Bedford & Sullivan podcast enters its next 100 episodes with a friendly debate. For most of our lives, Brooklyn Dodgers fans have cursed Walter O'Malley and his decision to bring their beloved Dodgers west. Out west, however, he was revered as a pioneer who helped bring the game of baseball in its major league form to the other coast. Rob Barnes, a Dodgers fan from Illinois going back to 1969 who joined us on the 86th episode, joins the podcast once more to take up the pro-Walter O'Malley side, while Brooklyn born Peter Trunk, who joined us on the 93rd episode, takes the anti-O'Malley postion. It should be a fun back and forth to distract us from that thing we could get while outside these days. So, join us at 11am ET for the latest episode, and first debate edition, of the Bedford & Sullivan podcast!

The Bedford & Sullivan podcast is back for its 49th episode! And today, we are LIVE from outside Citi Field! At Noon ET, we welcome back the Brooklyn Borough Historian, Mr. Ron Schweiger.Once upon a time, Brooklyn sat across the river from the City of New York as a healthy and ever-growing city of its own. Then, on New Years Day 1898, the City of Brooklyn, the County of the Bronx, Richmond County, Queens County and the City of New York merged to become what we now know as New York City. All the county governments voted unanimously to merge with the rest...except Brooklyn, which their city council passed by the smallest of margins. We will mostly talk about this consolidation today, or as many Brooklynites of the era called it, "The Mistake of '98."So, join us at 12PM ET for the latest edition of the Bedford & Sullivan podcast!

The stories pouring into the Bedford & Sullivan podcast have been fantastic, and today will be no exception. The late great Clem Labine, a pitcher on those Boys of Summer teams, was a Woonsocket, RI, native. At the age of 16 he went to work at Jacob Finklestein & Sons, a garment company owned by Rick Elliott's father, Elliott Finklestein, that eventually became the 7th largest outwear manufacturer in America. Clem and Rick's father became the best of friends, and Rick has numerous stories to tell about his childhood as, and I quote, "the most blessed child in U.S. history...not just because of Clem, but also because of an amazing dad, and all the opportunities the two dear friends saw as priceless gifts to their boys' lives." Larry King is still a very busy man after all these years, and I (Sam Maxwell) advise you all to keep up with his show on ora.tv/larrykingnow. They are taping a bunch today, and they tried to accommodate me to the best of their abilities. I went on and on for most of the show about Dodger/Cardinal rivalry history, as well as talking some playoff baseball with the NL and AL Championship series ready to get underway. And I also started talking about where I am in the writing process. After riding solo for most of the way, Larry was finally able to call around 27 minutes into the show. Though most of you may jump to that clip, I certainly wasn't too shabby holding down the fort.

The first episode of the Bedford & Sullivan podcast has arrived! I, Sam Maxwell, am developing a TV series along the lines of Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire regarding Brooklyn, its Dodgers, and how both were affected by the rapid transition into Modern America. As I gather the writing team together, a lot of research must be done to clearly define the atmosphere of Brooklyn circa 1937-1957. The research will be done via books and articles from the period, as well as from interviews with folks of the era and/or with knowledge of the era. This podcast will be to keep you, the audience, active listeners in that research. On the inaugural episode, talk-show host Larry King, who grew up in Brooklyn, will share with us his best stories regarding the borough and its ballclub, and how the two have influenced his life. Also, Ron Schweiger, the Brooklyn Borough Historian, will join us to discuss some of his favorite Brooklyn Dodger stories, including his first time entering Ebbets Field. So, join me Monday, July 1st, at 1:30PM EST for the inaugural episode of the Bedford & Sullivan podcast!
