Phantom Galaxy: Do Blade Runners Dream of Enduring Franchises?
Welcome back to the Phantom Galaxy! Nathan and Dave return to the Illustrated Fan with a big episode celebrating the animated films of Walt Disney and reviewing the stop-motion Netflix film 'House'. Dave and Nathan bring back Khristian Knecht from the Miyazaki episode (now a college graduate!) and each host shares their top 10 Disney animated films after they review the trippy, unsettling, quirky House, an anthology of strange tales set within the same setting. For our Disney list, we decided to exclude the following: * films that were essentially and primarily live-action but combined animation; Pete's Dragon, Bed-knobs and Broomsticks, Roger Rabbit would fall into this arena. * Pixar films. The Illustrated Fan #7: Spirited Away with Princess Mononoke
Nathan and Dave finally get around to talking the great Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki and two of his most influential works, Spirited Away and Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke). In order to do the master justice, we've invited on Miyazaki fan and animation student Khristian Knecht to discuss the films and their influence on the medium, as well as Miyazaki's own significance to film in general. Our short film is actually a trailer for a little-seen tv pilot called Yuki's Sun, which marks the first directorial project Miyazaki ever did. We also briefly discuss the Studio Ghibli documentaries "Never Ending Man" and "Kingdom of Dreams and Madness".
