Welcome back to the X-Files Round Table returns to Phantom Galaxy with over four hours of coverage for the fantastic 5th season! Nathan is once again joined by Victor Rodriguez from Inside the Sound of Fear, Dave Roy from The Great Fright North,, X-Files super-fan Karen Wagner, and introducing Shannon Barnes who sits in for Tommy Wood this time, but will be a regular co-host going forward. ----more---- Perhaps the tightest and most consistently good season of the show to-date, Season 5 represented an experimental undertaking for television; deliver an entire season filmed after the upcoming theatrical release that will follow it. As a result, the storylines are more structured, the monsters of the week more plentiful and strategically planned. Duchovny and Anderson, at the top of their fame, have never been better. Welcome back to the Phantom Galaxy! As Bill Van Veghel enjoys his well deserved vacation in the wilds of Canadian, Nathan brings in guest co-host Victor Rodriguez to talk all things related to the Blade Runner franchise. Starting with the quirky and dizzying novella 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick, Nathan and Victor roam the violent, rain-soaked streets of the future, hunting down each divergent part of this eclectic franchise. We take a deep-dive into the once neglected and now celebrated 1982 Ridley Scott classic that stands at the center of this universe, and then briefly explore a forgotten 1995 sequel novel by K.W. Jeter, the astounding 2017 sequel by Denis Villeneuve, and the 2021 animated series Black Lotus. Along the way we talk all things related to Blade Runner and the central theme of humanity and its definition that carries through each and every incarnation, discussing how each entry deals with those ideas. Nathan is once again joined by Victor Rodriguez from Inside the Sound of Fear, Dave Roy from The Great Fright North,Tommy Wood from Reel Talk: A Movie Podcast, and X-Files super-fan Karen Wagner, returning from last episode! ----more---- A darker, grittier and more emotional season than the previous 3, the fourth began its movement towards a feature-length big-screen movie, that would unveil itself at the end of the fifth. Before that, we get a season crammed with conspiracies, killers, creatures and a sense of grand, impending doom. But our jaunt through the season is anything but dour; we have some big laughs and dig deep into the competing threads of the alien mythology and the growing, enticing and sometimes frustrating chemistry between its two wonderful leads. Oh, yea, and we talk about those pesky Peacocks! Enjoy, and remember, THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE! Nathan and Dave return to the Illustrated Fan with a big episode celebrating the animated films of Walt Disney and reviewing the stop-motion Netflix film 'House'. Dave and Nathan bring back Khristian Knecht from the Miyazaki episode (now a college graduate!) and each host shares their top 10 Disney animated films after they review the trippy, unsettling, quirky House, an anthology of strange tales set within the same setting. For our Disney list, we decided to exclude the following: * films that were essentially and primarily live-action but combined animation; Pete's Dragon, Bed-knobs and Broomsticks, Roger Rabbit would fall into this arena. * Pixar films. We will eventually do a Pixar-centric episode later this year! Without further ado, check out the episode and see which films Nathan, Dave and Kris chose as their favorites! Nathan and Dave finally get around to talking the great Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki and two of his most influential works, Spirited Away and Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke). In order to do the master justice, we've invited on Miyazaki fan and animation student Khristian Knecht to discuss the films and their influence on the medium, as well as Miyazaki's own significance to film in general. Our short film is actually a trailer for a little-seen tv pilot called Yuki's Sun, which marks the first directorial project Miyazaki ever did. We also briefly discuss the Studio Ghibli documentaries "Never Ending Man" and "Kingdom of Dreams and Madness". The X-Files Round Table returns to Phantom Galaxy with a deep dive on Season 3! Nathan is once again joined by Victor Rodriguez from Inside the Sound of Fear, Dave Roy from The Great Fright North,Tommy Wood from Reel Talk: A Movie Podcast, and, making her Phantom Galaxy debut, X-Files super-fan Karen Wagner joins the team! We cover every single episode of Season 3, some in more detail than others, and come to the conclusion that this might be the strongest season of the entire show! X-Files national treasure Darin Morgan has a trilogy of great episodes, and the mythology expands to include one of its hallmarks, the Black Oil! New allies and new enemies appear, and we also come across one of the greatest missteps of the series--hint: killer Ecuadorian curse cats! Enjoy, and remember, THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE! Happy Turkey Day all! Nathan and Bill (who already celebrated Thanksgiving in October!) invite friend of the show Brian Scott on to discuss movies related to the holiday. Of course finding good movies outside of the same 3 or 5 titles can be difficult, with the pickings slimmer than a turkey carcass after the last round of leftovers. So, we've tried to each bring two titles to the table that evoke the mood of the holiday or feature it in some manner, regardless of genre. And, in the end, some of these are honestly barely related, but we put the question to you. What are some of your go-to Thanksgiving movies? Nathan is once again joined by Victor Rodriguez from Inside the Sound of Fear, Dave Roy from The Great Fright North, and Tommy Wood from Reel Talk: A Movie Podcast. Welcome to the second episode of Strange Frequencies! This new series within Phantom Galaxy is hosted by Bill Van Veghel, our resident music afficianado. With the help of guests, Bill explores the worlds where music and fiction meet, taking a look at films with musical themes, albums and artists who use their medium to tell stories and explore ideas, and that gulf in between that includes musicians turned actors and directors, soundtracks and ambient music, and much much more. In this second episode, Bill calls in Jared and Ryan from the Horror Chronicles to take on the hard rock duo of AC/DC's 'Who Made Who?' album, and the film it plays as soundtrack to, Stephen King's 'Maximum Overdrive'. From waxing poetic about the contributions of the late, great Bon Scott to questioning what King was or wasn't thinking while directing the film, it's a wild ride through a film and album that deserve the attention. Welcome back to 'Casting the Bones', a chilling new podcast dedicated to exploring the roots of horror fiction and folklore. Your hosts Nathan Bartlebaugh and Seth Dombach peel back the seemingly tranquil veneer of the normal to examine the weird, the strange and the terrifying lurking beneath the flesh and muscle of our world. In this episode we talk briefly about the latest--and laziest--monster hoax to hit the internet, and lament a time when people were willing to build better bluffs and better beasts. We also contemplate the difference between an aswang and a chupacabra. Then, it's off across the darkness of the airwaves to commemorate the late, great spooktacular Art Bell, who introduced whole generations to the beautiful wierdness of supernatural and paranormal conspiracy theories with his hit radio show 'Coast to Coast'. We discuss some of the Bell's greatest hits, what made him so enduring and compelling, and the nerve the show struck in culture. We also showcase some of Bell's craziest callers, including the infamous Area 51 employee whose nutty rant ended in a sattelite malfunction and a dropped broadcast. We wrap the evening up with a review of a tantalizingly strange new movie called 'The Endless', directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Have the directors of the intriguing 'Resolution' and the beautifully creepy 'Spring' struck gold again? Does this highly lauded indie live up to the early hype? Listen and find out. Settle down, turn off the lights, and join us as we cast the bones. Send any fiction, strange experiences, or art/books/films you'd like reviewed, or general feedback to castingthebones@gmail.com . Welcome back! You've arrived at the Phantom Galaxy Podcast, a journey into all things science fiction, fantasy and horror. Nathan Bartlebaugh and Nathan Bell leap into unapologetic eye-rolling 80's nostalgia, while rolling their eyes at unapologetic 80's nostalgia. Fueled by Blueberry Moonshine, the guys talk about Youtube Red's upcoming Karate Kid cash-in, Cobrai Kai, and then go down the rabbit hole of silly 80's martial arts extravaganzas, paying some special attention to schlocky faves like Ninja 3: The Domination and The Last Dragon. There's also a spoiler-free review of Steven Spielberg's big-screen adaptation of Ernie Cline's Ready Player One. Can Spielberg harness the nostalgia zeitgeist while not succumbing to reference overload, the way Cline's book did? Or is this the 'Where's Waldo?' of 80's kid pandering? Jump into our DeLorean and take a trip down memory lane... Phantom Galaxy is a genre podcast that releases every week. Welcome to the very first episode of 'Casting the Bones', a chilling new podcast dedicated to exploring the roots of horror fiction and folklore. Your hosts Nathan Bartlebaugh and Seth Dombach peel back the seemingly tranquil veneer of the normal to examine the weird, the strange and the terrifying lurking beneath the flesh and muscle of our stories to find the fear beneath. Consider this episode the prologue, as we discuss childhood fears and haunts and what things drew us to the horrific and unusual to begin with. Every week we'll share fictional stories from new authors and esteemed masters of the genre, and we'll discuss those tales that dare to be true, while shining a light on what it is that makes our scariest superstitions tick. We'll have interviews with horror authors, artists and those folks who just have a stirring story to tell. Settle down, turn off the lights, and join us as we cast the bones. Happy New Year from Phantom Galaxy! Seth and Nathan start the year out on a slightly bleaker note, by considering Charlie Brooker's dark sci-fi phenomenon, Black Mirror. Set in worlds that feel devastatingly close to our own, Black Mirror often feels like Twilight Zone for pessimists. But underneath the grim exterior, there are worlds bursting with human truth and feeling, even if some of it doesn't exactly shine a light on our better natures. In this first episode, Nathan and Seth discuss the first two seasons of the show and the first Christmas special. They will return to talk the two Netflix seasons shortly. SPOILER WARNING: While we mostly try to leave many of the big plot twists or suprises intact, our basic approach to this episode was with 'full spoilers' in mind, so take notice before you continue. Phantom Galaxy begins it's daily podcast countdown to the New Year! Our first episode has an old friend returning from the past to offer counsel on the Force. Nathan Bell joins Nathan Bartlebaugh again, to talk all things Star Wars and then consider The Last Jedi and the intriguing backlash it seems to have stirred in some quarters of fandom. We'll weigh in on Porgs and and whether or not we think Rian Johnson brought balance or disturbance to the Force with this 'Jedi'. Finally we talk about the relationship of fans to the new film, we also bring a spoiler-free review and then more detailed spoiler-talk. May the Force be with you! Oh, hi Mark! Welcome to Phantom Galaxy Episode 34. We return to kick off a big December full of podcasts with our first Cult Double Feature. Remember when looking in on and obsessing over the lives of seemingly mundane schlubs was the purview of the Truman Show? Reality TV vaporized that taboo long ago, and left us with a burnt-out wasteland of entertainment that sometimes still produces gems of absurdity. In this episode we look at two 'singular' individuals and the movies and cults they have inspired. First off, Nathan Seth and Chris study the cosmic badness of Tommy Wiseau's The Room and then review the new film 'The Disaster Artist', a manic account of the film's making. Then, we zoom into obscure cult territory with one of Chris' favorite movies; Windy City Heat or, How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love Perry Caravello. Not only do we explore the small but obsessive fan base that has rallied around Perry, but we've also got a shout-out from the man himself! Jump down the cult movie rabbit hole for another crazy jaunt through The Phantom Galaxy! Phantom Galaxy is a genre podcast that releases every week. Welcome to Phantom Galaxy Episode 33. Positively tiny compared to most of our episodes, this one is a quick review of Marvel's new Thor: Ragnarok. Nathan and Chris jump into a non-spoiler discussion of what you can expect from this latest jaunt into the world of Norse mythology and comic world-building. And there's Goldblum, y'all! Welcome to Phantom Galaxy Episode 31. Nathan, Seth and Chris continue the Stephen King series with new guest, Jason Swam, who drops some impressive King knowledge along the way. This is the first part of a 3 part series dedicated to King's short stories and their adaptations. Tonight, we look at the Children of the Corn saga, The Mangler, Sometimes they Come Back, Cat's Eye, The Lawnmower Man, Battleground, The Woman in the Room and, of course, Maximum Overdrive. This discussion was too long to post as a whole episode, so we'll be back in a few days with the second half, discussing Skeleton Crew and the movies made from The Bachman Books. Welcome to Phantom Galaxy Episode 30. Ever had that movie that was a certified clunker by everyone you meet, that resembles the inside of the microwave after an unfortunate burrito accident, but....you like it anyway? In this episode, Nathan, Chris and Seth discuss the ultimate 'hot mess' movies; films that aren't ' so good they're bad' or eccentric cult items, but films that were heading somewhere but got lost somewhere in translation. There is no denying their failure in a conventional sense, but for some reason, there's something approaching affection there anyway. Join us as we look at goofy game adaptations, space vampires in the buff, tv channels from Hell, and a few off-the-wall literary misfires. And don't forget to let us know which movies you consider a 'hot mess'! Phantom Galaxy is a genre podcast that releases every week. We discuss what we liked about the new movie, and what we think of the changes. We'll begin with a review, and then Seth and Nathan dive into the merits of the book, why some of the changes were necessary, and where others may lead as the sequel shapes up. Welcome to Phantom Galaxy Episode 28. This is the start of our long awaited 'Stephen King Goes to Hollywood' series. Stephen King is one of those undisputed masters of pop horror, and his work has saturated so many aspects of our culture. This series will look at all King's film and television adaptations, while comparing and contrasting them with the original works that inspired them. For this first episode Nathan and Seth go back to the beginning, to find a struggling writer hitting it big with a terrifying tale of a young, bullied girl lashing out with untold supernatural power. More than 40 years later, that writer is still going strong and Carrie, the story that started it all, has left four film adaptations and a musical in its wake! Join us as we explore the appeal of King, how he came up Carrie as story, and what we think works best about his first novel. Then, we'll jump into the films; DePalma's stylish thriller, the questionable sequel, a tv remake, and a big budget 2013 adaptaiton. Keep the lights on for this one constant reader (or listener), and get ready for a trip down the King's Highway. Phantom Galaxy is a genre podcast that releases every week. Welcome to Phantom Galaxy Episode 26. A few weeks ago, the horror world lost George Romero, arguaubly one of the genre's most influential voices. Nathan, Chris Durham and Jason Kuppler team up to walk through every one of Romero's directed films and examine what made the man and his work seem so special. On a sad note, our own podcast community lost a friend. Ivolee Henson (whose humorous observations on 'No Escape' were shared in Episode 23) passed away suddenly last month. Ivolee was a good friend and a caring mother and grandmother. I'm posting a link to a Go-Fund Me Page to raise education funds for her three grandchildren. Please consider it. https://www.gofundme.com/ivolees-education-fund And finally, as promised, a link to George Romero directing....Fred Rogers getting a tonsillectomy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITOheeRZBpE Phantom Galaxy is a genre podcast that releases every week. It's been several episodes since the mind-bending, myth-busting epsidode 8, and fans of the original Peaks have been given much to rejoice over and even more to fluster over. This episode we delve into where Lynch really seems to be going with the overall arc of the show, teasing out the mysteries and guessing at what comes next. And of course, what's with that scary teddy? Note: This is complete spoiler territory. We discuss in detail events that occur in these epsiodes as well as our theories about what's coming next. Additionally, we talk the Dark Tower, The Shape of Water, A Wrinkle in Time and The Disaster Artist. Nathan also brings his review of the already annointed box office bomb Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and lets you know, financial prospects aside, if it's worth your time. Welcome to Phantom Galaxy Episode 23. This week we begin a regular feature on what's available on streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. We also present our second submitted Phantom Rant, and we get to use our censor noise for the first time on the podcast. Chris and Nathan are joined by Jason Kuppler as they take a look at Netflix's Okja, The Bad Batch, and more. There's a distinctly female theme running through this week's films, especially in the horror arena. The female-centric anthology XX, and two thrillers featuring young female protgaonists (Sweet Sweet Lonely Girl and The BlackCoat's Daughter) round out the ghoulishness. And Chris reviews an old schlock movie called 'Invasion of the Bee Girls. Join us for that and much more, deep within The Phantom Galaxy! Phantom Galaxy is a genre podcast that releases every week. In this episode we get down to reviewing a handful of new summer movies and tv shows, including a special early review of Matt Reeves War for the Planet of the Apes. We'll also take a look at the latest season premiere of AMC's Preacher and Spike TV's launch of The Mist. Chris laments the twisted desire to finish film franchises he's already started with Transformers: The Last Knight and Nathan wearily explains what you can expect from Despicable Me 3. We also talk a variety of topics including Nintendo's upcoming SNES release with Star Fox 2, and their treacherous roll-out of last year's NES classic. Will Matt Reeves Batman movie resemble a Hitchcock film? Will Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets be more than pretty pictures? What exactly is going on with The Inhumans?
