Linda is a democrat member of the Texas State House of Representatives. This week, she’s giving us an update from her political office, in a new segment we’re calling “Talk me off the lege”. Last week, Linda and the rest of the reps voted on a key piece of legislation: vouchers for private education. Families are being given vouchers that potentially drive funding away from public schools in Texas. Texas and fellow Texas House democrats voted against the legislation to protect families and support public education; republicans by and large voted for the legislation–and won. In this episode, Linda unpacks what happened in this legislative session, and the impact the passage of this legislation will have on Texas residents. Last week, it looked like the stock market was going to crash: it actually did crash, but it recovered by the end of that trading day. Linda explains what intraday trading is. We are witnessing Trump manipulate the stock market right now, using his Truth Social and X feeds to signal stock market drops and recoveries. This is, needless to say, unprecedented. Trump is reversing on tariffs, delaying them, and making exceptions for certain goods, which is adding to stock market volatility and chaos. Currently, Linda is not making new investments. She is waiting to buy when the market is less volatile. For now, stay strong, Investies! Don’t let your emotions get the better of you as you watch the market rise and drop and rebound again. Through her podcast and advocacy, Linda tackles the intersection of financial education, the economy, and geopolitics, helping diverse communities build wealth and secure their place in today’s financial landscape. Linda examines the most recent jobs report–and while we added 228,000 jobs to the market, the unemployment rate increased from 4.1% to 4.2%. Normally, positive jobs numbers would be reflected positively in the stock market, but the market isn’t celebrating at all. Trump’s tariffs and resulting reciprocal tariffs from trading partners like China are causing stock market chaos. Speaking of stock market chaos… We’ve been waiting and wondering if and when the market was going to crash. It is now. This is not the time to sell off your entire portfolio. This is the time to hold on–that will only cause the stock market to crash further. This is the time to invest in those blue chip stocks that you normally can’t afford. This is the time to hold fast and have patience, and manage your emotions as an investor. Remember: we’ve seen market crashes before. We’re currently headed towards a bear market, which means that yes, the stock market is crashing, or has crashed (depending on when you listen to this). And yes, the catalyst is Trump’s tariffs, and the possibility of a full-blown global trade war. Last week, the stock market made a “v-shaped” recovery–a steep recovery after a very steep drop. But are we actually in the clear? Linda analyzes why these gains aren’t sustainable, given Trump’s volatility as a leader. His ever-changing policy decisions on things like tariffs, immigration, and diplomacy have really serious implications for the economy, and for the stock market. We’re talking recession-level implications. Is this scary? Yes. But remember: millionaires are made in recessions. During moments of financial crisis, we can make strategic investments in blue chip stocks when they are down--and expand our portfolios exponentially. Through her podcast and advocacy, Linda tackles the intersection of financial education, the economy, and geopolitics, helping diverse communities build wealth and secure their place in today’s financial landscape. This week, Linda looks into the latest stock market trends. You’ve probably noticed that the market has been on a downward trajectory, but the Dow Jones, the S&P 500, and the NASDAQ are all seeing modest rebounds. We’re not in rally territory at all–but at least the stock market isn’t still plummeting. It’s likely that what we’re seeing is the stock market girding itself for more economic turmoil to come–between Tariffs and Trump’s divisive policies. Linda also analyzes the last six months of the stock market–from unprecedented and unstable growth since the 2024 re-election of Trump, to the market’s recent nosedive. She also provides advice for investors on how to meet the stock market in its current state. Linda also unpacks what the GDP is, and what it means when it comes to recessions. The next GDP numbers will be released on April 30, 2025; we will know then whether or not we are technically in a recession. Through her podcast and advocacy, Linda tackles the intersection of financial education, the economy, and geopolitics, helping diverse communities build wealth and secure their place in today’s financial landscape. This week, Linda discusses Trump’s economy, and his impacts on the stock market. As you are probably noticing, the market is still on a major roller coaster ride, thanks to Trump’s policy decisions–from DOGE to tariffs and beyond. Last, week the stock market neared correction territory after Trump enacted sweeping tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. After the stock market nearly tanked, Trump walked back the tariffs. We are in a limbo–will Trump eventually enact more tariffs? Are we heading towards a stock market crash? Trump’s capricious decisions are impacting all of us, republican and democrat alike, and the economy and stock market are suffering. Linda also unpacks a new jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While job numbers are up (yay!)unemployment numbers are up too (boo!), especially among Latinx folks. This doesn’t bode well for the economy and job seekers. Sweeping layoffs and firings across the country (especially from DOGE) will be especially represented in next month’s jobs report. Linda also shares updates on the latest update from Fed Chair Powell and his latest updates on rate hikes and stock market volatility, and why his comments impacted the market positively. We are seeing a small rally in the market, however; but it’s unclear how long this will last. Linda also reviews the stock market’s performance in February. Investies, we are now publishing new episodes every Tuesday! Thanks for tuning in. This week, Linda shares two committees she has joined in this legislative session: Pension, Investments, and Financial Services (PIFS), and Delivery of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The DOGE committee of which Linda is now a part is not the DOGE committee that Elon Musk is running on the federal level; instead, this is a committee that operates on a state level in Texas, and it reviews if Texas state agencies are running as efficiently as possible. Last Wednesday, the stock market was at an all time high. And then on Thursday and Friday, investors started selling off, which precipitated a sharp decline in the market. Trump’s trade war, and new tariffs, are the cause. Linda unpacks how this all went down–and advises us on what to do right now as investors. Linda also updates us on the latest in inflation. The CPI (consumer price index) measures the change in prices paid for goods and services–and it’s currently telling us that inflation is still a problem. Please note: we recorded this week’s episode on Monday, February 10. Last week, we saw Trump impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico. In the last week, those tariffs have been deferred for a month; as of this week, tariffs on Chinese goods are in effect. Linda examines why Trump is imposing these tariffs, and how they might effect our economy and on our stock marketing and our investments. Linda also takes a look at the history of tariffs, and their impact on the national debt, and examines the latest round of Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum. And it’s a good reminder to start your investing journey sooner rather than later! As you probably know already, folks who are farther along their financial journeys and have been investing for years are well aware of how to make capital gains work for them come tax season. That said–many of the wealthiest investors use capital gains as something akin to a tax loophole. As you go farther along your wealth management and financial journey, you’re going to encounter different kinds of investing. Options trading is a certain type of investing, but we encourage you to to have a fair amount of comfort as an investor before you try it. At the very least, you should have a high tolerance for risk before you try it. There are so many ways to make the stock market work for you, and as you gain more experience as an investor, you’ll want to try different ways of trading. If you have questions about different kinds of investing, please reach out! You can find us on Patreon, and submit questions without getting a membership (but we appreciate it if you do decide to invest in our show!). We love speaking with our listeners. Linda Garcia, Texas House Representative, author of Wealth Warrior: 8 Steps for Communities of Color to Conquer the Stock Market, and founder of In Luz We Trust, is dedicated to empowering BIPOC and Latinx communities through financial literacy. Her podcast, Investies, tackles real-money topics, demystifies investing, and explores crucial areas like the stock market, money management, and the impact of interest rates on personal finances. Linda’s work advocates for financial independence, championing equity and representation for all, especially immigrants and marginalized communities. As a financial feminist, she encourages listeners—regardless of political affiliation, be it Republican or Democrat—to take control of their financial futures. Through her podcast and advocacy, Linda tackles the intersection of financial education, the economy, and geopolitics, helping diverse communities build wealth and secure their place in today’s financial landscape. So, there are some indicators that our economy is not doing so well… like, inflation is still way up. And our nation is in debt big time. But at the same time, Fed Chair Jerome Powell might not have to hike up interest rates in September. Plus, there are a TON of interventions the powers that be can make before we have a recession. So don’t get it twisted: Linda walks you through all of the data she’s looking at right now. Linda’s also checking in with two of her very favorite companies: Target and Walmart. Both companies had earnings calls recently, and their reports give us a lot of data about how the economy is doing, and how consumers are behaving. Linda breaks down the data from both companies. Just don’t forget: we’re on a financial journey, not a sprint. When things get bumpy, we keep calm and try not to make any sudden moves or giant purchases. Last week, we talked about the stock market’s wild twists and turns in recent weeks. Today, Linda revisits one of her favorite topics: investor emotions. When the market is going crazy, and it looks like the economy is going to crash, what’s the best move to make? Before you cash out all your investments, take a deep breath and check in with yourself. The stock market and the economy will thank you for your mindfulness! Beyond those crazy moments when the stock market fluctuates wildly, what are some of the other emotions investing can bring up in us? From greed to fear to scarcity mindset, investing can be a really triggering experience. Linda discusses how to identify, manage, and process some of the most intense emotions associated with investing. What do we do when the market starts going haywire? Sit tight, take a deep breath, and wait out the chaos. When you’re investing, patience is the name of the game.
