While she was being treated at Johns Hopkins University, a doctor named George Gey removed cells from her cervix without her permission and later discovered that Henrietta's cells could not only be kept alive, but would also grow indefinitely. For the last 60 plus years Henrietta's cells have been cultured and used in experiments ranging from determining the long-term effects of radiation to studying COVID-19. The Black Panthers, also known as the Black Panther Party, was a political organization founded in 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale to challenge police brutality against the African American community. The Panthers eventually developed into a Marxist revolutionary group that called for the arming of all African Americans, the exemption of African Americans from the draft and from all sanctions of so-called white America, the release of all African Americans from jail, and the payment of compensation to African Americans for centuries of exploitation by white Americans. At its peak in the late 1960s, Panther membership exceeded 2,000, and the organization operated chapters in several major American cities. Greenwood was named the town after another town called Greenwood, Mississippi. The first store was a grocery store on the corner of Archer and Greenwood ave. The community continued to grow along Archer st. attracting a real estate developer, a dentist, a black physician and a even ministers. Little by little JB Stradford's vision of a black business district took shape along Archer st. In 1905 the first school for black children opened in a Baptist church and by the time Oklahoma was a state Greenwood had two physicians, a newspaper and three grocers. The Greenwood area would be annexed in to Tulsa in 1909. It's residents believed greenwood represent a new freedom from the oppressive economy of the old south. A new life where whites were too busy making money to worried about putting blacks in their place. JB Stradford become the richest black man in Tulsa owned the largest black owned hotel in America. Between the 1910 and 1920 Tulsa black population surged from 2000 to 8873, and the black population resented only about 13 percent of Tulsa's total population. The Great Depression was the worst economic downturns in the industrialized world, While no group escaped the economic devastation of the Great Depression, few suffered more than African Americans. African Americans across the country already occupied a fragile position in the economy. By the late 1920s, the many African Americans toiled away as domestic servants, farmers, or service workers in jobs marked by low wages, weak job security, and questionable labor conditions. Approximately eleven million African Americans lived in the American South, where they principally used as sharecroppers, tenant farmers, and wage workers. only 10 percent of black southerners actually owned land, most cultivated crops on white-owned land and received a small share of the harvest. Black southerners were locked into this endless cycle of poverty, exploitation, malnutrition, disfranchisement and violence. The United States vs. Billie Holiday is set primarily during the height of Holiday's career in the later period of the legendary jazz singer’s career up until her death in 1959. the movie draws from on Johann Hari’s bestseller Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, which tells stories from the early days of the war on drugs and those caught up in that fight. The movie touches specifically on the chapter about the federal agents who targeted Billie Holiday. Though the movie’s timeline jumps between different points in her life and career. It mostly focuses on jazz singer Billie Holiday's battle with the United States government and Harry Anslinger, the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics over her efforts to sing "Strange Fruit," a song about lynching's in the South, and the attempts to suppress her by targeting her for her drug use. Throughout the movie, Holiday grapples with the weight of legal troubles, her past which contribute to her drug use, engages in a romance with an Jimmy Fletcher the black FBN agent tracking her, and her rises up to become a key figure in the early days of the modern Civil Rights Movement. Black History Month is an annual celebration of the study and achievements of African Americans and a time when they weren't being recognized their central role in U.S. history. It was the predecessor to “Negro History Week,” which was the brainchild of the black historian Carter G. Woodson in 1915, In September Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, This organization was dedicated to researching and promoting the achievements of Black Americans and other peoples of African descent Audio Onemichistory.com Please support our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=25697914 Buy me a Coffee https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Countryboi2m Sources: Carter G. Inspired to defend their country and pursue greater opportunity, African Americans have served in the U.S. military for generations. But instead of being treated as equal members of society upon their return from military service, thousands of Black veterans were accosted, attacked, or lynched between the end of the Civil War and the post-World War II era.
