Send us a text What would you do if fear wasn’t running the show? In this episode of Resilient with Jen Chambers , we’re talking about doing the things that scare us—not the "run-from-a-bear" kind of fear, but the quieter, sneakier kind that pops up when you’re about to try something brave and bold. Jen shares the behind-the-scenes story of organizing and hosting a TEDx event in her small town—from the nerve-wracking first steps to the unforgettable moment on stage. She talks about the fear, the failures (hello, missing video footage!), and the fierce joy of doing something totally out of her comfort zone. You’ll hear about the science behind fear, celebrity stories that remind us we’re all human, and why pushing your limits (gently) can literally rewire your brain. Stick around for a short guided meditation, a writing prompt to explore your next brave step, and an invitation to connect—because fear doesn’t have to mean stop. Sometimes, it just means go carefully. ✨ Featuring: • The neuroscience of courage • Quotes from Maya Angelou, Beyoncé, Eleanor Roosevelt & more • A TEDx tale of grit, grace, and gear struggles • A writing prompt + meditation to help you move forward Whether you’re dreaming of giving a TED talk or just want to hit “send” on that scary email, this episode is your permission slip to show up afraid—and do it anyway. 🎧 Listen in, take a breath, and let's do the brave thing together. Or maybe buy a brick to support them- go to their website to check that out.The Lodge at Hot Lake Springs was built at the site of a hot spring called "Ea -Kesh-Pa", originally used by the Nez Perce who lived there. It first became a lodge in 1906. It became a sanitorium, where visitors came for its healing mineral waters, and was a tourist destination for famous and regular folks alike, even visitors like Wild Bill Hickock. After it partially burned, it was only abe to use about a third of the rooms, and so gradually fell into disuse. After short stints as nusing training facilities and a nursing home, it was bought for use as a restauraunt/night club and a bath house, and then was closed due to vandalism and abandonment. It was redone in the 2000's by the Manuel family, and was reopened as a bed and breakfast, with a bronze foundry, musum and spa. It was bought by the Grande Hot Springs RV resort next, and is open now for day use and to stay. Warm, kind, and encouraging, he let me have a seat at what felt like the "big kid's tables" with my first book, and I'm pleased to say he's been inviting me back ever since. Bill speaks a dizzying number of languages (listen to find out how many), travels and hikes all over the world, and he and his wife built their own log cabin in the woods... with hand tools! He wrote a great book about that, too, on a typewriter at the cabin. We chat about his writing career, travel, and his incredible support system in his wife Janell Sorenson. Send us a text Do you want to finally get that book written? I hear time and time again that people have "writing a book" on their Courage Checklists. I get it! It's scary. It's terrifying actually. I wrote a new book that I hope will help. It's what has worked for me in writing many nonfiction books. I call it Nonfic: 30, because the idea is that you do small things every day to write a draft of a manuscript in 30 days. I'm introducing it today so that you can be ready to start on June 1st if you want to go on the journey with me as I give short instructions every day on Instagram in June, for FREE. That way if you want to, you can do it 100% free by following along. If you're the type who wants something written to go along with it, that option will be available for you to order a workbook as well in mid-month of June. No matter how you do it, your story is powerful! Be brave, and just start. Join each morning in June on Instagram: @thecouragechecklist @jennifer_byers_chambers I'll be your biggest cheerleader all month long! Support the show Thank you for listening! Send us a text First up in this episode, we will discuss the importance of setting clear goals and how to go about defining them. I'll link a free download of a sample tracker called "Symptom Tracker" on the @thecouragechecklist Instagram page, click the Linktree --> "Resource Downloads" page, --> Symptom Tracker, or HERE . For today’s second half, we’re doing a mini-course on how to advocate for yourself. I have a book coming out soon called, "The Chronic Illness Handbook: Strategies for Living Your Best Life,” and we’ll use some information from that today. Now, it's useful in other arenas if you aren’t chronically ill; learning to advocate for yourself can be one of the hardest skills you learn how to do as an adult. We all will face illness in one form or another during our lifetimes. Today, I’m sharing tips for effective communication with healthcare providers, including preparing for appointments and asking questions. I hope this is a helpful episode. Send us a text Part of my recovery process as an adult included both yoga and mediation. Although now I'm now certified to teach in both Hatha and Adaptive Yoga, it was intimidating for me at first. Yoga also became a way for me to reconnect with both mind and body and bust through daily stressors. Even as a person with disabilities that can make mobility hard, I love exercising, but sometimes my pain level makes that difficult. Not so the gentle Bo and Adaptive yoga forms, particularly the chair based yoga. I am used to teaching people of all ability levels, and today I'm sharing a short meditation and yoga that you can do from your office, chair, or anywhere that feels comfortable for you. It is generally safe for those who have joint pain as well. Do note: my voice is softer on this part as I tend to do the routine as I teach it! (Please listen to your own body and talk to your physician about beginning any physical activity; this is merely my personal experience and I am not a doctor). Send us a text In my job as a publisher at Groundwaters Publishing, we get many submissions by those who are courageous enough to share their creativity. The writing ranges from memoir to fiction, poetry to nonfiction articles. Our motto at Groundwaters is, "bubbling up in our good time," an allusion to the nature of water and a reference to the wet and forested western Oregon area where our base is located. It is also a metaphor for our mission to help creators from all ability levels and walks of life share and improve their work. The podcast format is an opportunity to share their work even more widely. This show is made up of recordings from the works by writers who submitted to Writer's Radio and Groundwaters Publishing. It takes a lot to write down something that has been in your heart or brain, whatever genre, and we are grateful to these authors for sharing their work. We are also very grateful to the Applegate Regional Theater, whose fine voice actors from their Reader's Theater troupe read and performed these segments. Send us a text Hello and welcome to the Courage Checklist Podcast. I'm Jennifer Byers Chambers. I'm a writer, brain injury survivor, and a chronic illness warrior. This podcast is about having the courage to check off your internal list of things you think are impossible for you. It is also about how I busted through much of (but not all, yet) my own near-impossible checklist. I started this podcast because I want to know how other people are completely courageous in their own lives, and also why we held ourselves back. It's interesting to see what we can do to reinvent our own expectations to become the fullest and most joyful versions of ourselves. You can expect an episode one or two times a week, and you also hear from listeners who've been courageous about things on their own lists. I hope you'll find a sense of belonging here, & that you'll gain some courage or new insight to make breakthroughs of your own. Please subscribe so you can become part of the checklist family. Send us a text Groundwaters Publishing publishes an anthology every year, of art, poetry, fiction and nonfiction by creative individuals, who range from local to our corner of Oregon to all over the world. When the annual book is released, the publishing company hosts a gala at Applegate Regional Theater so that the authors and poets can read their work to a live audience. This year, well... a different plan was needed. In the first of several parts, the authors of Groundwaters are reading their work for the podcast. It's not "live," as we used to title the event, but it's as close as we're going to get in this pandemic world of late 2020. Groundwaters, the publishing company, has proven to be a resilient business, from its inception as a quarterly literary magazine to a full-blown publishing entity. Pat Edwards and Resilient Podcast Network host Jennifer Chambers are pleased to present this stellar, eclectic collection of talent from around the world. Support the show Thank you for listening! Send us a text Sadie says: In 2016 I was a Political Science Major with the hopes of becoming a world-renowned politician. When the election cycle hit that year, I saw firsthand how politics can drive apart friends, colleagues and even families. I felt something inside me shift that year, and I knew I needed to change my path. I had always been interested in Art and Graphic Design, but at 21 years old I felt like I was "too old" to start something brand new. (Newsflash: You are NEVER too old to start something new.) With a bit of encouragement from my husband I purchased Adobe Illustrator and took a youtube course on how to use it. I quickly realized Graphic design was my passion and calling in life, and thus, a Designer was born. As a business owner myself , I know the importance of creating a distinct visual representation for your brand. I help small businesses define their brand story so their customers are clear on who they are and what they do. Send us a text Jocey Orelus Wiitanen helps women improve their mindset to create more joy and abundance in their lives. Jocey started her business to help women accept and love themselves. Prior to coaching, Jocey spent nine years as an independent cosmetologist and two years as a cosmetology educator. She gained clarity on her own life and passions after taking six months to travel. Eat, pray, love was her inspiration for her trip around Southeast Asia. Here she learned to trust herself. She learned what it means to truly love yourself and go with the flow. Through the practice of meditation, yoga, and self-reflection. Jocey learned that everything she has ever needed is already within her. For the last two years, Jocey has been digging deep to learn as much as she can about changing and cultivating a positive mindset, self-love, and manifestation. Her favorite quote is, “ live life to the fullest, live life like there is no tomorrow." Seeing others succeed and reach their full potential is what brings her the most joy. Send us a text An avid traveler, dog mom, coffee lover and book addict, Holly began her adult life as an academic. With a BA in English and Environmental Studies and an MA in Human Rights she was headed for PhD stardom. Life changed as it always does and as a result she put the brakes on the PhD and has been jumping from one adventure to the next and ultimately living a very colourful life. She has traveled to over 30 countries, is very active in numerous sports, coaches Little League and sits on the Board for the local Farmers Market. Holly is a Real Estate Advisor and the Owner of Kokoro Executive Coaching in Victoria, BC. Her interest in personal development and overcoming challenges took root during her travels. As a mainly independent traveler, she began to notice that very large problems seemed much smaller and more manageable when travelling. When forced to face problems head on and rely only on yourself to make all the decisions and then to have to live with the results, there was nobody to blame. You become the reason for everything that happens. Travelling toughened Holly up and she is thankful every single day of her life that she was born with an adventurous spirit and a love for immersive learning. She is very interested in how the practice of coaching can assist people in a holistic sense. Her coaching focus is on feedback - learning how to effectively give it and receive it. She often quips, "you don't promote yourself so what you think is at most 50% of what matters." Known for her candid advice, Holly champions goal setting, accountability and modesty as 3 important stabilizing pillars of successful people - in their personal and professional lives. Curious in nature, coaching is a great fit for Holly. She is a self proclaimed no-nonsense type which she balances with an outstanding sense of humour (as far as she is concerned). From a personal development standpoint, Holly strongly believes that the biggest thing standing in the way of increased resiliency is entitlement. As society continues to shift, the inability of many to manage change in their personal and professional lives is a cause for major concern. Building resiliency can be a tough process for people as they must begin to question their assumptions about themselves and the society that they exist within. The rewards that can be attributed to living a more emotionally and physically resilient life span all areas of life. The need for people to focus on their own coping mechanisms has never been more apparent. The good news....once you decide to make a change, there are people out there to help you get there. Send us a text Simply put, Cullen Vance is incredibly talented -- and incredibly resilient. He's a storyteller, an artist, an editor, a film maker, but above all a musician. The Register-Guard newspaper put it this way, about his album "Cullen Vol. 1 ": "The mood...moves through relaxing jazz, Andrew Bird-like violin plucking and sparse silhouettes that echo Bon Iver's stark, contemplative pieces. The album's a stirring mix all held together by Vance's enthusiastic musical exploration." He's a creator- -a talented game and web designer, an animator, an actor, a teacher who hosted live Harry Potter-themed day camps, among other things -- and he composes music to score plays and films. Of late, he has been exploring live performing with ecstatic dance troupes. Fun questions to look for are: How many instruments can he actually play? (answer: a LOT!). Give it a listen and see if you can spot the rare instrument Vance plays for our audience from his large collection. Also, big new announcement with Vance's new album, just in time for St. Patrick's Day.
