Recently on Radio Brews News we discussed the Sunshine Coast’s beer-focused campaign , through which the regional tourism body is promoting Queensland’s Sunshine Coast as a craft beer destination to encourage tourism to the region. It makes the cheeky claim to be Australia’s Craft Beer Capital. The campaign has sparked plenty of discussion in beer circles about whether the craft beer capital claim is reasonable but the point is, it’s sparked discussion about beer. It’s also arguably the most significant pro-brewery campaign that has been run by any organisation in the country. It also includes its own podcast series, Pursuit of Hoppiness . And that is a great thing for the entire industry, especially as it would appear to have spawned an “us too” campaign from South East Queensland’s other coast, the Gold Coast, which would appear to have put some resources into promoting its breweries since its beachy competitor’s campaign began. This can only be good for the industry. As such a significant campaign, we wanted to find out what the tourism body saw of value in the brewing industry where others have overlooked it. We also wanted to hear of the insights into the campaign, and importantly, how other brewing regions can engage with their local tourism body to drive interest in their breweries. We reached out to Kelly Ryan, the Sunshine Coast’s Head of Marketing for her insights into the campaign. Kelly is responsible for overseeing the organisation’s promotion and advertising efforts to build awareness of the Sunshine Coast and lure more visitors to the destination. As you’ll hear she has a wealth of tourism marketing knowledge, drawing on extensive experience with Canberra’s major tourism body and major national attractions. There’s a lot to learn about beer tourism in this BreweryPro episode. Welcome to a special episode of the BreweryPro podcast. Brewery valuations and investment in the brewing industry have increasingly become issues of focus for Brews News as breweries look to raise capital. There are several ASX-listed brewing companies, and a number of breweries that have flagged their hopes for an eventual IPO. We have also seen the emergence and rapid growth of equity crowd funding that is pitched as an investment in the breweries undertaking that form of capital raising. We have previously looked at brewery valuations from the point of view of those charged with valuing and selling these businesses, but in this episode we look at the issue of investing in brewing businesses. Scott Phillips the Chief Investment Officer in Australia for the Motley Fool , a website and podcast providing investment education and advice. We speak to Scott about basic principles for investing and investing in brewing and some of the factors potential investors should consider in deciding whether they are actually investing, or indulging in a passion. You can hear more of Scott through his Motley Fool Money podcast, and also The Good Oil with Scott Phillips . The information contained in this episode is general in nature and does not take into account your personal situation. You should consider whether the information is appropriate to your needs, and where appropriate, seek professional advice from a financial adviser.

Anthony wanted to speak to Aron about what he has learned in his many visits to breweries about what brewers can to in the brewhouse to make the job of cleaning and sanitation easier. As you’ll hear, this isn’t an ad for cleaning chemicals, most of the discussion is about layout and design, equipment and processes that can actually reduce the need to use chemicals. Anthony is joined by co-host Marcus Cox . If you’d like to ask questions of Anthony or Marcus, suggest topics for future episodes, or provide feedback you can join our RBN Brewery Pro Facebook group or email brewerypro@brewsnews.com.au .

Welcome to the first episode of a new podcast, Brewer's Perspective. Brews News created the first Australian beer podcast way back in 2011. As Brews News has evolved we discuss the news of the week and also the backgrounds of industry people, probing their experiences in the industry. If you haven’t heard it, you may well be interested in the industry news and insights those shows contain. Very regularly we get asked to tackle topics that are quite niche and quite technical. The topics are often ones that we would really like to explore, but may be a little off topic of Radio Brews News That’s one of the reasons we created the BreweryPro channel as the home for content that has higher value but for a more limited audience for our general listener. Next week the first episode is titled, There’s No Five Second Rule In Brewing, and looks at brewing cleanliness and sanitation. It features Aron McGarrity from Ecolab, but as you’ll hear when it drops, it not looking specifically at chemicals but how brewery design and planning, and systems can make sure your beer is the best it can be. But before we do that, we wanted to introduce our hosts to give you a little background on the people who will be anchoring the discussions, Anthony Clem and Marcus Cox. Anthony Clem has been a guest on Beer is a Conversation more than once. During his time with Lion discussing XXXX Pale Ale and also during his time as Head Brewer at Hemingways in Cairns. More recently he worked was a Member of the Quality Committee for the IBA and the judging panel of the RNA, recently started a business as a Brewing Consultant with the intent to give brewery owners the capability and insight to live their dreams of building a craft brewery creating consistently great quality craft beer. Marcus Cox Hired by Newstead Brewing Co in January 2021 to add some fundamental quality structures, quickly becoming Head Brewer in March. He was the first Australian to judge at European Beer Star awards in Munich, 14 year IBD member and MBAA District Pittsburgh re-founder, former VP and current Past President. You can join the discussion in the new Facebook group .

In this BreweryPro podcast we look at data from the packaging line. We speak with James Magee, CEO of manufacturing software company OFS about a report the company released recently, the Craft Brewers Benchmark study that found that craft brewers can only run their packaging line for 12 minutes before it stops. It also found that most craft brewers spend 46% of their time on the packaging line doing things other than filling cans and bottles of beer. We wanted to find out more about the data, where it come from and how ofs says it can help measure and reduce inefficiency. If you want to find out more about how the software is used in-brewery, you can register for the upcoming webinar featuring Greg Stones, Supply Chain Manager of Tribe Breweries, designed for brewers who want to know what a good day on their packaging line looks like and – most importantly – how they can sustainably and repeatedly improve their bottom line.

Hop Products Australia has completed its 2021 hop harvest. HPA picked 675 hectares totalling1,526 metric tonnes of hops. They saw an increase in acreage harvested, but a decrease in yield and saw a significant increase in tonnage in Galaxy, Vic Secret and newcomer Eclipse, but a decline in Ella that will see issues around contracted volumes. This year was also notable for the end of classic alpha hop, Super Pride. We discuss all of this and more in this BreweryPro podcast.

Welcome to this BreweryPro episode looking at hop harvest and selection. As southern hemisphere hop growers reach the midpoint of their hop harvest, discussion often turns to hop selection. Brewers who have been fortunate to visit US farms are often invited to participate in selection, choosing the lots that they want to purchase. In Australia Hop Products Australia goes a different way, aiming for consistent quality through blending, even though the company itself participates in selection in the US. BreweryPro wanted to better understand the Australian approach and the reasons for it and so we caught up with HPA’s Sales & Marketing Manager Owen Johnston to understand why the company sees the local market as being different and also learn the business dynamics and agronomics that are unique to their Australian operations that shapes its approach to hop sales.

Brews News ran a story last week detailing the concerning results of a pilot study by Queensland Health. The study saw an analysis of the abv of 25 craft beers and compared the results to the ABV declared on the label. Eighty per cent of the samples fell outside the allowable variation. We understand anecdotally that these results have been replicated more widely in informal testing by other bodies. Following that story, BIRA - Brewing Interlaboratory Reference Analytes - and is the brewing industry’s not-for-profit testing scheme - issued a statement noting that as food and beverage manufacturers, compliance with labelling standards is critical, especially in such a sensitive area as ABV labelling where there are real consumer safety issues at stake. The group encouraged brewers to participate in the scheme that works to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of analytical beer testing. We heard from a number of BIRA members and others with a keen interest in market quality of beer wanting to discuss the issue and what follows is the recording of that panel discussion. In addition to explaining the work of BIRA, this conversation covers a wide range of issues around beer quality testing and its importance.

Due to COVID The IBD Asia Pacific conference will be held virtually from 23rd - 24th February 2021. The IBD is one of the leading brewing training organisations globally, and its conference is open to brewers of all sizes, however, there is a perception that the Institute and its conference is targeted to major brewing companies. To give smaller breweries a taste of what’s on offer at the conference, BreweryPro is speaking to a number of presenters from the 2018 conference in Wellington about their presentations to give you a taste of what this year's conference can offer you. In this conversation, we speak with, Maltster Doug Michael from Gladfield Malt , about the secrets to mashing, as seen by the person who makes the malt. As you’ll see, Doug is no-nonsense and wants to - in his words - cut through the bullshit and get to the nitty-gritty of mashing. And that was Doug Michael from Gladfiedl Malt. You can find Doug’s contact details in the show notes , together with the presentation notes. You will also find details of the conference program for the 2021 conference, including the Ecolab Trade Night Events which will now all be held on Monday 22 February.

Welcome to this BreweryPro Podcast with Owen Johnston from Hop Products Australia. The annual hop harvest has become a mainstay on the hop calendar, and the feast of the senses that the event affords is one of the most evocative experiences in brewing. With the current travel restrictions, the farm tour and in-person socialisation can’t take place this year, but the important information sharing, networking and brewer-to-grower communication is also a big feature of the harvest, and that will be taking place virtually. Here, Owen talks us through what is scheduled and how it will all take place. We also look ahead to how harvest 2021 is shaping up agriculturally and also follow up on the recent release of Eclipse . You can find the full program and registration details in the show notes or on the HPA website.

Despite the thousands of potential new varieties that are crossed every year, it’s not often that a hop enters commercial trials and even more rare for a hope to graduate to full commercialisation. Today HPA celebrates that milestone with the hop that has been trialled as HPA-016. It’s a hop that has created genuine excitement amongst brewers. So as HPA launches Eclipse, BreweryPro caught up with HPA’s Sales and Marketing Manager Owen Johnston to talk about the development and commercialisation of the hop, as well as Deeds Brewing’s Justin Corbitt, who has trialled Eclipse as HPA-016, and also used it in the beer Deeds contributed to a special Eclipse launch pack.

Welcome to this special BreweryPro podcast looking at gluten in beer. Over the last 20 years we have seen a significant increase in the number of consumers who avoid gluten or identify as being intolerant to gluten, as well as growing awareness of coeliac disease. With traditionally-made beers containing gluten, this has seen a rapidly developing market for beers that appeal to those looking at a gluten reduced lifestyle. However, it’s a complex topic. Professor Michelle Colgrave is an internationally recognised researcher in the field. She leads the Food and Agricultural Proteomics teams at Edith Cowan University and CSIRO, using technology to identify key proteins that will benefit Australia’s food and agriculture industries and improve human health. This week been recognised for major breakthroughs in the analysis of gluten. The research that was awarded has led to the development of an ultralow-gluten barley, now known as Kebari, which is used in the production of gluten-free cereals, beers and food products with all the nutritional benefits of whole grains, while being safe to be enjoyed by coeliac sufferers. Importantly, she is a great communicator of her expertise, as you will hear, making the complexities of this topic approachable.

Welcome to a BreweryPro conversation with Hop Products Australia’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Owen Johnston. The 2020 hop harvest report has been released and it was a mixed year for HPA, with some varieties, including Galaxy up significantly, and others such as Vic Secret down. We talk a lot in the brewing industry about beer being an agricultural product, and this hop harvest demonstrates that. So I wanted to discuss with Owen the 2020 harvest, what led to the result, but also the development and evolution of the Australian hop industry since we first spoke with HPA on our podcasts almost 10 years ago. It’s an interesting deep dive into hop growing and the vagaries of a growing season, what the results mean for brewers in terms of availability and a look back over ten years of growing hops. You can download the full report here .

Kevin Han from Nash Advisory , a Melbourne-based business support and corporate advisory firm told Brews News' The Antidote podcast that the has actively been advising privately owned companies including breweries and distilleries as they confront the current crisis. “What we've found challenging over the last three weeks is that a lot of our clients are coming to us in a tough position because they've got to make some really challenging decisions around staffing, production, and what they need to do with their business,” he said. Han said many directors, owners, managers and staff had invested time and money in their businesses and navigating the uncertainty caused by COVID-19 was an unprecedented challenge. “What we're fielding in terms of calls from our clients is really about business fundamentals. "Cash is king at this point, how do we manage to pay our staff? How do we manage to pay our rent? What are the best levers that we can pull to get us through what could be a couple weeks, a couple months, or potentially longer?” Han said. You can read the full transcript of the advice here .
