It's the next instalment of our spectacular time-traveller's pitch series, where once again we toy with the very fabric of the universe, all for the sake of a cartoon! Joe welcomes a new guest to the show, Graham Williamson - podcaster, writer and film-maker extraordinaire - to give an exuberant fanboy's pitch about the acclaimed mini-series 'Over the Garden Wall'. Joe then jumps forward in time, using science and stuff, to check out Graham's reaction after seeing the series for himself. If you have not seen 'Over the Garden Wall' then you get to learn about your favourite (probably) new show - and if you have seen it then you get to experience the joy of a newbie's reaction - so either way it's win-win, right?! Enjoy our latest time-travelling exploits and let us know your feedback.

So this is an interesting episode we recorded at the tail end of the last UK ‘lockdown’. We first discussed animation we had re-connected with to help us through the situation, and then new shows and films we had gotten into. At the time of writing lockdown is no longer the status quo in the UK, but it is still the norm elsewhere in the world and the episode provides a still-resonant analysis of ‘comfort viewing’. Plus there are of course a great range of animation tips for you to check out! Or let us know your thoughts if you are already in the know… Timestamps (after any adverts): ‘Re-connection’: · 1:30 – Aria the Animation · 7:45 – She Ra and the Princesses of Power · 13:05 – Neon Genesis Evangelion (and other ‘apocalypse’ shows) ‘New’: · 18:40 – Totally Spies / Carmen Sandiego / Kim Possible · 23:35 – Harley Quinn · 33:58 – Disney films (Bambi / Basil the Great Mouse Detective / Black Cauldron / Hercules / Zootopia / Treasure Planet)

Burly Men With Powers The last decade has seen many changes in mainstream media, but possibly the most surprising has been the massive rise in popularity of superheroes - thanks in no small part to the MCU, the DCEU, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. What’s interesting though, is that superheroes have always been popular in animation. From Western cartoons like X-Men, Justice League Unlimited, Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk, to anime titles like Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Casshern, One-Punch Man and My Hero Academia. So how do superheroes fit into the modern animated landscape, and what actually counts as a superhero when it comes to anime? Andrew and Rob don their toughened spandex (no capes!), and head for the mean streets of animation to find out. After that it’s back to business as usual with a look at some of the things we’ve been watching, which this week are Dragon Ball Super part 6 and the anime adaptation of Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors spin-off - Samurai Warriors. Let's Talk About Conventions One of the highlights of any anime fan's calendar is the convention, where like-minded people gather together to cosplay, shop, listen to panels, enjoy the atmosphere, and even possibly meet the odd voice actor. They've become a staple of anime communities all over the world, but could they be better? Join Tucky (owner and organiser of conventions), and Rob (long-time critic and attendee), as they have a chat about how anime conventions could grow and evolve. Then it's business as usual with our regular look at some of the things we've been watching, and kicking things off is the anime version of the Battle Girl High School social network game. After that it's time for a couple of book to manga to anime adaptations, starting with some historical fantasy in The Heroic Legend of Arslan before moving on to something more supernatural in Occult;Nine. Massive Robots Fights Are All You Need The Hollywood adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s hit manga Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm), is out in cinemas, and by all reports it’s doing some decent business. Join Tucky and Rob as they discuss the film that James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have created, the implications of the film’s success, and some possible titles that could be adapted in the future. After that it’s time to talk about the other things that we’ve watched, which this week include genocide and the forced enslavement of mysterious animals in Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us, the bizarre and stylish feature-length adaptation of Guillaume "Run" Renard’s surreal science fiction comic MFKZ, and the equally bizarre butt-handlebars in Darling In The FranXX. After School Goth Club This week it’s anime all the way as Tucky, Mark and Rob get several shows out of their systems, and kicking things off is series two of the show that’s basically catering porn - Food Wars! The Second Plate. After that it’s time for some painfully secret high school experiments (and other stuff), in Kiznaiver, and a dive into the dark fantasy world of Overlord II to watch some lizard-men in their native habitat before we head to outer space for some giant robot on giant robot action in Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky. Rounding things off is the anime adaptation of ONE’s psychically charged hit manga series Mob Psycho 100. Somewhere Over The Redub Subs versus dubs. It’s the oldest continuing debate in anime, and with a variety of arguments for and against one or the other, it doesn’t look like ending any time soon. But there is one particular aspect of the debate that’s often overlooked - songs - and with that in mind, Andrew, Tucky and Rob decide to investigate whether songs in anime should be redubbed into English. After a rousing discussion it’s back to our usual business of what we’ve been watching, which this week are part 1 of the stunning adaptation of Kore Yamazaki’s (Frau Faust), hit supernatural folklore story The Ancient Magus’ Bride, and the anime version of Kozue Amano’s (Aqua, Aria), scuba diving slice-of-life manga Amanchu! Bardock's Geordie Genes Computer graphics have become the norm in animation thanks to their versatility and efficiency, but there are certain types of CG animation that some people just don't like. With that in mind, Rob and Andrew investigate cel-shaded CG animation and some of the possible reasons why it divides opinion. After that it's business as usual with our usual look at what we've been watching, which this week include the Dragon Ball TV Specials, Reign of the Supermen - DC's feature-length animated sequel to The Death of Superman, No Game No Life: Zero, and the anime adaptation of the mobile game Granblue Fantasy. It’s a new year, so we decided to out some of the more notable titles scheduled for release in 2019, which for some reason leads Tucky and Rob on to a discussion about judging things too soon or based on little evidence (also know as a knee-jerk reaction). Now that we’ve got all of the bad stuff from the last year of animation out of our system it’s time for the Keyframe gang to talk about the good things that were released during 2018. With that in mind, gather round fellow fans as we take a long and somewhat complicated look back over the previous year. Beyblade: The Japanese Conkers Live-action/animation crossovers have been a part of film for since the advent of The Enchanted Drawing back in 1900, and with Pokémon: Detective Pikachu due for release in 2019, Tucky, Andrew and Producer Rob discuss the new addition to the franchise - which leads to a discussion about the history of live-action/animation crossovers in film. After that it’s time to suggest some anime, cartoons or video games that could be successfully adapted for live-action or live-action/animation. Then it’s time for our usual round-up of things we’ve been watching, which this week include Fireworks: Digimon Tamers and Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimetres Per Second. Gangs of Akihabara So Goku makes an appearance at the Macy’s Day Parade. Is it really big news as some reports suggest, or is it merely another sop to fans? Join the Keyframe gang for an interesting and divisive discussion about very large balloons before they leave the parade grounds to find out what’s been happening in the ongoing “divorce” between Funimation and Crunchyroll. After that it’s time for our featured anime, and this week we’ve got Andrew trying to figure out K: Missing Kings and K: Return of Kings. Then it’s Tucky’s turn to find out what it takes to be an idol and voice actress in Girlish Number, before Producer Rob closes proceeding with One Piece Collection 20 and one of the best arcs in the series - the Paramount War. Those Goofy Cave People On this episode of Keyframe, Tucky and Producer Rob attempt to unpick the Academy’s “For Your Consideration” list of animated feature films that are in the running to receive a nomination for an Oscar. Join them as they get wax cynical about the awards, lament the fact that great movies like The Breadwinner and A Silent Voice didn’t get the attention they deserved because Disney/Pixar made a film about a kid who wants to be a musician and that is somehow more compelling than a film about the causes and consequences of bullying or trying to be female in Taliban controlled Afghanistan … breathe … You get the point. Anyway, ignoring the fact that many deserving films have historically been almost criminally under-represented simply because they weren’t American or British, this year makes for interesting reading at the very least. After that it’s time for our featured animations, which this week are the isekai, harem, romantic comedy, fantasy In Another World With My Smartphone, the supernatural stylings of Twin Star Exorcists, and the delightfully, almost subversively charming rural antics of farmyard creatures and their wild frenemies in the wonderful The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales. Muffin-Topping Into Mainstream My Hero Academia has been a huge success as a series, but it’s the remarkable success of the Two Heroes movie that has Tucky and Producer Rob thinking about the changing perception of animated feature films in the West. This naturally leads to an interesting discussion about anime movies in general, live-action adaptations in the west, and our suggestions for titles that could make the transition from Japan to Western live action TV or film - which include titles like Patlabor, Eden of the East, Black Lagoon, Monster, Golgo 13 and Shiki. After that it’s time for our usual look at some of the titles that we’ve been sent, which this week are Higurashi: When They Cry and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light. Dragon Ball's Time Trunks We’ve got a packed episode this week as Producer Rob kicks things off with One Piece Uncut - Collection 19 (episodes 446 to 468), which fans will know is the end of the Impel Down Arc and the beginning of the Marineford Arc (also known as the Paramount War). After that it’s over to our resident DB correspondent Andrew who has Dragon Ball Super parts 3, 4 and 5 before Tucky joins the fray with the harem romantic comedy And You Thought There Was Never A Girl Online? Rounding things off is something beautiful and serious that deals with the horrors of living in under a brutal, zealous and xenophobic regime, the trials and tribulations of being female in such a place, and the salvation that can be found in family. Based on the best-selling book by Deborah Ellis, The Breadwinner is uniquely poignant, masterfully animated, acted and directed, and sometimes almost painful to behold. The Weird Faces of Matt Gurning This week Tucky and Producer Rob forego the usual niceties and get right down to business, and leading the animation charge is the surprisingly decent magical girl series Matoi The Sacred Slayer. After that it’s the turn of Disenchantment - Matt Groening’s new Netflix series - to be put under the microscope before we end with the bluray release of the seminal anime movie Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. As always, we try to be as serious about animation as possible but we feel that it is our duty to warn you that this episode contains gurning, nagging left hands, breaking of dimensions, happy-yet-unholy romances, “raising” of the dead, Whitley Bay vampires, Exing and more. Bishounen Mutants Things get a bit contentious this week because Tucky went to see Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, and now he’s got to convince Producer Rob - who is notorious for his hatred of things like Teen Titans Go! And Ready Player One - to give the animated film a fair chance. After that argumentative start it’s time for all things anime with The Asterisk War, Flip Flappers (seriously, who comes up with these names?, and Heaven’s Lost Property. The Hokage of Middle Management Anime is serious business (allegedly), and as if to highlight this point, Tucky joins fellow anime/animation nerd Producer Rob for an extended conversation about the trials and tribulations of voice acting, the future of the U.S. dub of One Piece, and what could be done to ensure the successful future of Western voice acting for anime. After that it’s time to find out why Black Clover Season 1 isn’t Naruto (and why we should stop thinking it is), and explore the wonders of Netflix’s Final Space (which, now that we say it, sounds a bit dodgy). Hot Kaiju on Kaiju Action We’re short a few people short, but you can always rely on Tucky and Producer Rob to fill the airwaves with all sorts of animation-related anecdotes. This week we kick things off with our featured anime - Netflix’s Godzilla: City On The Edge Of Battle and a whole lot of One Piece (collections 17 and 18 to be exact). That nicely leads us into an interesting topic that started from one simple question: Do we need something to replace Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece? A Natural Born Lever-Puller So the World Cup happened, and although it’s ostensibly a football event but given all the drinking that goes on it may as well be related to tea, coffee or any other beverage you’d care to mention. Because of that there wasn’t much happening in the world of animation - unless Japan’s successful run and the self-appointed Commissioner of Football’s reference to Captain Tsubasa sparks a wave of football anime in which case we’d like to see a continuation of Giant Killing please! Anyway, we’re here to talk about animation and this week we’ve got Lupin III Parts 4 and 5, The Incredibles 2, Blame!, and the classic Beatles movie Yellow Submarine. The Power of Friendship Compels You! Kicking things off this week is the news that Disney and Pixar are facing another copyright lawsuit involving Inside Out. Aside from that it’s time for us to recommend some titles from the Spring 2018 season of anime, which include Golden Kamuy, Megalo Box, Uma Musume: Pretty Derby, Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku, Hinamatsuri and Comic Girls. Giant Robot Punch-Up in Space Once upon a time there was a goose that laid golden eggs … China and the wider South-East Asian region has their own literal version of that famous goose in the form of The Monkey King, and there are numerous movies, TV shows, books, songs, comics, video games, manga and anime that have found inspiration in classic tales like Journey To The West. Now it’s the turn of director Stephen Chow to get in on the Monkey King action with his planned animated TV series that aims to open the the character up to a global audience. After that it’s time for the serious business of anime, so Mark girds his loins and ventures once more into his own personal giant robot hell with the first four episode movies of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. Then it’s Andrew’s turn to show his mettle in the fight against evil as he tackles Season 2 Part 2 of My Hero Academia, and Producer Rob winds things up with some Aztec/Mayan/Incan-inspired fantasy action in Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers. Fujoshi, And Proud! In his ongoing quest to have everyone eat healthy, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has declared war on … cartoon characters? It actually makes more sense when you know the facts so moving swiftly on, Grr Martin’s 1980 children’s book The Ice Dragon is getting an animated feature film, Disney Princesses will be in force in Wreck-It-Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks The Internet, and Teddy Ruxpin returns from the animated wilderness for a surprise reboot. After that it’s time for Tucky to explain why it’s okay for him to like Love Live! Sunshine!!, before Mark and Producer Rob find out how a reverse-harem works in a fujoshi-tinged world with the anime adaptation of Junko’s Kiss Him, Not Me! Elmo Joins A Gang Apparently there was a big wedding somewhere and shockingly, none of us were invited. This meant we had to stay in the study and browse the animation news, which led us to some disturbing discoveries like Thundercats Roar (which has the potential to be some kind of physical release ... pun very much intended), physical releases of anime in the U.K., and the rather spectacular trailer for The Happy Time Murders which also has a physical release … This week our featured anime include the Stein;Gate-esque time-travelling antics of Fate/Grand Order: First Order and the energy-saving high-school mystery shenanigans of KyoAni’s Hyouka. A Psychedelic Night In So aside from Producer Rob confusing his Sarahs (it should be Sarah Michelle Gellar and not Sarah Jessica Parker), Peter Rabbit gets a sequel, Netflix and Viz Media announce an original martial arts anime series set in Mexico, and Christiano Ronaldo gets animated. After that we’ve got kids versus cats for the attention of the parents (even though the cats really wouldn’t care), in Boss Baby: Back in Business, cyberpunk film-noir with Kenji Kamiyama’s Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig and Masaaki Yuasa’s “what did I just watch” movie Mind Game. Death Metal Trash Panda It’s a sparse week in animation as not much of interest happened, except for the trailer for Teen Titans Go! To The Movies and the English language summary of The Association of Japanese Animation’s industry report for 2017. The trailer splits opinions between Tucky and Producer Rob, but all is well as they get to nerd-out with facts and figures related to anime. After that it's time for the serious stuff, and this week we're focusing on the cyberpunk film-noir stylings of the magnificent Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Aggretsuko (or Aggressive Retsuko) - a death metal comedy series starring anthropomorphic animals. Giant Furry Space Hoppers Guillermo Del Toro has signed a multi-film deal with Dreamworks Animation to create “family” movies - which basically means that anything that they churn out that has his name on it is definitely getting watched by us (even if it’s Boss Baby 73: Where Does It All Come From?). In other news, Aardman take everyone by surprise with the announcement of a sequel to Chicken Run, and Aichi Prefecture in Japan have announced the creation of a Studio Ghibli theme park. Our featured anime are Assassination Classroom Season 2 Part 2, Dragon Ball movies 3 & 4 (The Tree of Might and Lord Slug), and I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job - which is more commonly known as Yusibu. Curing The Dubstep Flu It’s the dynamic duo of Tucky and Producer Rob at the helm this week, but don’t worry as we’re absolutely sure we know that we’ve got the good ship Keyframe pointing in the right(ish) direction. Before we get into the serious stuff we discover that Dreamworks Animation have announced a second series of Kung Fu Panda, and in a very surprising and confusing move, the return of Rocky & Bullwinkle. 24 Carrots And A Leaf We had a few technical issues during this episode so we apologise for the audio quality. Girl Power makes a surprising return this week with the announcement that The Spice Girls are getting their very own animated superhero movie. There’s no point looking at us for answers. We’re not sure what’s going on either! After that it’s time for our featured cartoon and anime, which this week consists of more weirdness in the form of the Supernatural/Scooby Doo crossover episode, My Hero Academia season 2 part 1, and the ever-wonderful hell-hath-no-fury adaptation of Yoshiki Nakamura's shoujo romantic comedy manga Skip Beat! A Shakespearean Bromance Spring time is upon us which means we’ve been let out to frolic in the fields! Before that though, there’s the serious business of animation to contend with, and nothing comes more serious than a census. Not the kind that measures population growth, density, divergency, or any of the other things that might be relevant, but an anime “census” … In other, slightly more important news HiDive have announced that they will release dubcasts within two weeks of an episode’s original broadcast date, and network favourite Vinland Saga is getting an anime adaptation! After all of that it’s time for Mark to explain why the live-action version of Prison School isn’t actually porn, Tucky to explain why Digimon Adventure tri. Hooray For Jim! Animation is serious business so this week we scrutinise the trailers for Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 and BallMastrz: 9009 through the lenses of our stop-motion microscopes. Our featured anime and feature film are the 2003/4 adaptation of Nanae Chrono's manga Peacemaker Kurogane, seasons 1 and 2 of GATE (Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri), and the live-action version of Fullmetal Alchemist. The Empire Ran On Tea So we're back once again on our ongoing exploration of the great sea of animation, and this week we found a teaser trailer for The Incredibles 2 floating in the shallows around Pixar Island. After that we get into a fight with God Eater (which is adapted from the hit video game franchise from Bandai Namco), and wax lyrical about Chrono Crusade (adapted from the manga by Daisuke Moriyama), before we let our inner steampunk personas out for a spin with Katsuhiro Otomo's period sci-fi movie Steamboy. RUN! It’s a Pixelated Cockroach! Keyframe rides again, and this time we’ve got a new member for our conga line as we parade through multi-sensory theme park attractions, Bob Marley’s music, samurai bunnies and a new animated feature set on Hawaii during Halloween that has a suitably cringe-worthy name (see if you can guess what it is). In one of our rare changes to “normal” service we’ve got another live-action anime/manga adaptation in the form of Tokyo Ghoul, after which it’s business as usual with Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions (apparently Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash is too difficult for us Brits), followed by Nurse Witch Komugi R. Duck-Shaped Speedos for Tanks Now that we've got the good and bad of 2017 out of the way we have to resume normal service … for a given value of normal that is! This week we cast our eyes (which are admittedly in various states of working order), over the Winter 2018 season of anime and pick out the things that have caught our attention (i.e. were very shiny). 2017 is over, and what better way to mark the beginning of a new year in animation than a two-part look back at the previous year. Waifu or Otter? So Disney have bought the lion’s share of the Fox media empire, which means Star Wars and Marvel fans have something to be happy about over the Christmas holidays. Meanwhile, we discuss the impact this will have on the Disney Princess register. Hey! Pointless things can be important too! We’re just not sure how or why – questions which also apply to the rather conspicuous anime eyes on Alita in the trailer for James Cameron’s version of Battle Angel Alita (or Gunnm – we refuse to call it Alita: Battle Angel because it already has a perfectly good name in English). After that it’s time for some animated Christmas cheer so buckle up as we take a ride through some of the “seasonal” (and we use that term very loosely at times), cartoons, anime and puppetry that caught our attention for one reason or another. We want to thank all of our listeners for their continued support. We’ll be back in January of 2018 with more animated goodies for everyone, but until then have a wonderful Christmas and a magnificent New Year! Magic Mushroom Milk So we finally hit the big one hundred mark, and it’s been … emotional. Okay, so in actuality we forgot our birthday (blame it on old age), but we do have some interesting things to talk about this week. We start with the 45th Annie Award nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Feature - Independent, and more importantly why they annoy us. After that it’s down to serious business with the epic-sounding Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle (Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut), Satoshi Kon’s captivatingly surreal animated feature film Paprika and the comedy series with the greatest background character in anime - Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto (Sakamoto Desu ga?). Scrooge McDuck's Human Trafficking Operation Shocking revelations abound this week! First we discover that Batman is actually a ninja in the trailer for the cunningly titled animated film Batman Ninja. After that we’re left positively thunderstruck by Akira Toriyama’s claim that Saiyans need S-cells to become super. All together now … MIDICHLORIANS! It’s enough to send Mark searching for some quiet time on The Magic School Bus but instead he gets the mediocre "Rides Again" sequel. Then it’s off to Academy City for A Certain Magical Index The Movie: The Miracle of Endymion before Tucky regales us with some new and improved(?) DuckTales. After all of that it’s time for a relaxing dip in the sea with Masaaki Yuasa’s absolutely delightful Lu Over The Wall. #BatmanNinja #AkiraToriyama #DragonBall #TheMagicSchoolBus #TheMagicSchoolBusRidesAgain #Disney #DuckTales #ScroogeMcDuck #DonaldDuck #ACertainMagicalIndex #Movies #Films #TheMiracleOfEndymion #MasaakiYuasa #LuOverTheWall #Animation #Anime #Cartoons #KeyFrame #News #Podcasts #Reviews #TheGeekShow

Gundam’s Glorious Jazz Hole The 26 animated feature films that have been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination have been announced so naturally, we're going to see what all the fuss is about … Before all of that though, our first order of business is visiting Mark who is currently wallowing in mech-hell after his addiction flared up again due to the extreme musical stylings of Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt. After that we're off to explore the forest in Goro Miyazaki's adaptation of Astrid Lindgren's children's novel Ronja: The Robber's Daughter (Sanzoku no Musume Ronja or Ronja Rövardotter) - which is also the first ever anime TV series produced by Studio Ghibli. Then it's time to get to business with season 20 of South Park and a Pokémon double-bill of Indigo League and the 20th movie in the franchise - I Choose You! Welcome to KeyFrame - the newest addition to The Geek Show family. This show is dedicated to the glorious medium of animation in all its forms, and each week we'll be exploring the vast realms of anime, cartoons, claymation and more - we may even throw in some news and reviews along the way. For now though, we're going to start things off with a nice, easy show about our recommendations for the past year. #Animation #Anime #Cartoons #KeyFrame #News #Podcasts #Reviews #TheGeekShow
