We love podcast industry podcasts - there are a lot of them and they're run by smart, passionate people who live and breathe podcasting and who are usually industry professionals. Sometimes though, they don't give the day-to-day enthusiast, creator or indie podcaster a platform to have their say, often taking "the view from the top" as delivered by the "podcasting professionals". In & Around Podcasting has been designed to respect and live alongside those shows and to be an accessible, inclusive podcast for every single podcaster; a show that allows everyone with an interest in the medium to have a fair...

As podcasting continues to see a mix of large investments and ad spend, it also continues to see layoffs across the industry. Many point to some of these large investments as being a cause, with money being spent on large networks and celebrity podcasts. Is this a sign that the industry needs to take a different approach, with perhaps more indie creator-led networks, or is it an unfortunate realism of an industry growing beyond its small beginnings? Join regular co-host Danny Brown and guest co-host Frank Racioppi as they discuss this interesting topic. Guest co-host this episode: Frank Racioppi After 38 years as a speechwriter and editor for a Fortune 50 company, Frank retired and indulged his love of podcasting, starting and managing a successful podcast review online publication -- Ear Worthy. He started it in 2017 and has enjoyed connecting with indie podcasters and anyone who supports podcasting. Frank and his brother Paul had a podcast four years ago called False Facts, but it was difficult to keep a regular recording schedule. He's loved writing his entire life and wrote for print magazines in the 80s from New Jersey Monthly, The Pet Dealer, American Health, The Sewing Circle, etc. He's also published five novels and four non-fiction books in the last four years. The novels range from a romance about two people bonding over the love of reading called For The Love Of Books to Least Best Employee, a novel about surviving as middle management in Corporate America. The Podcasting 2.0 initiative has been around since 2020, and is a way for the traditional RSS feed to be more interactive both for podcasters and listeners. This means offering features like transcripts, chapters, credits for talent on podcasters, funding your favourite shows, and more. It's also meant to keep the RSS system open and "protect" it from the walled garden approach of Spotify, YouTube, and - to a lesser degree - Apple Podcasts. Bit despite being the brainchild of the podcast OG Adam Curry, and lots of vocal support from certain parts of the industry, it seems that Podcasting 2.0 is still struggling to gain a real foothold. So why hasn't Podcasting 2.0 taken off, and has the boat sailed for this initiative? Join regular hosts Mark and Danny, with guest co-host Claire Waite Brown, as they dive into this much-vaunted but sometimes equally-maligned topic. It used to be that podcast downloads were the main data point podcasters would use to track their growth. The thinking was, get X amount of downloads per month and sponsors will jump at you with wallets full of cash. While that may have been the way back in the day, today's success metrics looks a lot different when it comes to podcast success. In this special live recording of In & Around Podcasting from PodSummit YYC 2024 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Danny is joined by Kattie Laur and Tim Truax to talk about how you can take advantage of them, and reframe your thinking and discussion around monetization and sponsorship. Takeaways: The podcasting industry is evolving, and metrics should extend beyond just downloads. Engaged listeners are more valuable than sheer download numbers when seeking sponsorships. Indie podcasters should focus on local sponsorships to create meaningful monetization opportunities. Understanding your audience's engagement can help shape your content and sponsorship strategies. Value for value models allow listeners to support creators without traditional sponsorships. Experimenting with different ad formats can improve listener retention and engagement rates. Currently, if a podcaster wants to get the full picture of their show's growth, they need to look at multiple analytics reports: their hosting company, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and now YouTube. Then they need to correlate how all this data is presented, since it can be very different, depending on IAB Certification, downloads, listens, and more. And that's just the podcaster - then you have media and ad buyer data, too. So how do we bring all this convoluted data together, and where do podcast analytics need to improve to give that fuller picture? Join your host Danny Brown and guest co-host Dan Misener as they dive in to podcasting's analytics problem. In the June 3 edition of industry publication Podnews, editor James Cridland reported on the rumour of "a large podcast hosting company having an all-hands meeting with the news that they'd found a buyer for the company." There's also industry rumours of at least three hosting companies either looking for buyers or open to buyer approaches. We've seen podcast hosting companies either close or be acquired before: Spotify bought Anchor and Megaphone, and Global acquired Captivate, as some examples. So with the rumour mill around more acquisitions currently red-hot, does this mean podcast hosting is in a boom & bust period? At the end of March this year, industry publication Podnews published its annual Podnews Report Card. This asks podcasters to complete a scorecard on podcast platforms, and where they're doing well, and where they're doing not so well. Across the board, all main platforms - Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and Amazon Music - had a lower score than last year when it came to helping listeners discover and follow a podcast. The same happened when asked how easy it was to list a new podcast, with all main platforms suffering a drop in the previous year's score. Join your usual hosts Mark Asquith and Danny Brown, with special guest co-host Genevieve Hassan, as they break down this report, and what the bigger podcast platforms need to do to when it comes to helping podcasters start and grow a podcast. Our guest co-host this week is Genevieve Hassan Genevieve is a former BBC News senior entertainment journalist who's interviewed hundreds of celebrities for more than a decade - including A-listers such as Chris Pratt, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Keanu Reeves, Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake and Kristen Wiig. Spotify recently announced they're no longer offering the option to easily record and edit within the platforms's hosting dashboard, a popular feature that was part of podcast host Anchor, before it was rebranded as Spotify for Podcasters. Online communities on Reddit and Facebook are full of upset podcasters looking for alternatives, since many podcasters used the "all-in-one" recorder/editor/publisher. So, should podcast hosting platforms continue down the tech stack path, or is this a sign that perhaps a "one size fits all" isn't a viable strategy in the long run? Join your regular hosts Mark and Danny, with guest co-host Neal Veglio, as they discuss what hosting looks like in 2024 and beyond. We hear it on all the industry podcasts and publications/newsletters: YouTube is the preferred destination for podcast listeners/viewers (and let's not get into the whole "but it's not RSS" debate). But for podcasters, it can be a different story: RSS feed ingestion release was left wanting in some key areas analytics are still not provided to podcast hosting companies to do it properly, you kinda do need proper video But can 2024 be the year YouTube "gets it right"? they've advised they're updating the API to support better hosting company integration they've added some new podcast-specific features to YouTube Music app they advise they've heard podcaster frustrations and are committed to better support for audio-only creators So, what do we think? Many podcasts don't make it past episode five, according to new data from the Podcast Index. In this episode, Mark, Danny, Dave Jackson, and Ashley Hamer discuss the challenges and misconceptions surrounding podcasting. Takeaways Many podcasts don't make it past episode five, possibly due to the rise of free podcast hosting platforms like Anchor, now Spotify for Podcasters. The lack of immediate feedback and community engagement in podcasting can be disheartening for new podcasters. The influx of celebrity podcasts and the perception of difficulty in getting noticed may discourage indie podcasters. To overcome these challenges, podcasters should focus on their internal motivation, have a long list of episode topics, and plan for breaks or hiatuses. Setting realistic expectations is crucial in podcasting, as it takes time and effort to grow an audience and make money. Podcasting is not a quick way to make six figures, and it's important to focus on creating valuable content and building a loyal audience. Our co-hosts this week: Ashley Hamer Ashley Hamer is Managing Editor at Descript, an AI-powered audio and video editor. She's also the author of the Weekly Tweak, a newsletter that helps podcasters improve their show week by week, and the creator/host of Taboo Science, a podcast that examines taboos through a scientific lens. In this episode, Danny, Sam Sethi, and Garry Aylott discuss the current state of podcasting apps and the recent closures of several apps. They explore the challenges faced by podcasting apps in terms of monetization and discoverability, and question whether this means some podcast apps have a future. The conversation also touches on the need for apps to offer more features and interactivity to both listeners and creators, and the potential for larger apps to tap into their existing platforms and open up APIs to smaller apps, creating a more diverse and innovative ecosystem. Takeaways Podcasting apps face challenges in terms of monetization and discoverability. Apps need to offer more features and interactivity to attract and retain listeners and creators. Larger apps could tap into their existing platforms and open up APIs to smaller apps to create a more diverse and innovative ecosystem. Education and communication are key to bridging the gap between the podcasting community and the mainstream audience. Listen to your audience and be selective about which features to use in your podcasting app. App closures and consolidations are likely to occur in the future. Let's explore the moral aspect of AI and the importance of maintaining human connection and authenticity in content creation. Takeaways Maintaining human connection and authenticity is crucial in content creation, and AI should be used as a tool to enhance and streamline the process. Voice impersonation and the security of personal voices are valid concerns in an AI-driven world, and measures should be taken to protect creators and their content. Creators should be intentional in their content creation, focusing on their unique stories and expertise, and using AI to enhance their message rather than replace it. Platforms have a responsibility to ensure ethical use of AI and protect creators, but creators also have a role in understanding and mitigating the risks associated with AI. AI regulation is necessary to protect individuals and society from potential harm. Private companies, such as Apple and Spotify, should collaborate to address AI regulation collectively. Individuals face challenges in protecting themselves from AI, and government intervention is needed. AI tools, such as transcription services, can enhance accessibility and improve podcasting workflows. Video is not essential for podcasting success; audio-only podcasts can thrive. In this episode, Mark, Danny, Joe Casabona, and Daniel J. Lewis discuss the future of Podcasting 2.0 and its impact on the podcasting industry. They explore the challenges and benefits of implementing Podcasting 2.0 features, such as transcripts and chapter markers. The conversation also touches on the complexity of value for value in Podcasting 2.0 and the need for better app support. Additionally, they discuss the importance of engagement and handling negative reviews in podcasting. The episode concludes with Danny's dream AI tool and a recommendation for the Knick Knack News podcast. Takeaways Podcasting 2.0 is an evolving movement that aims to improve the podcasting and podcast consumption experience for everyone. Implementing Podcasting 2.0 features should be based on the goals and needs of individual podcasters and their audiences. Reviews and ratings do not directly impact podcast rankings, but they can provide social proof and engagement opportunities. “You can’t make money unless you have 10-20,000 downloads in the first 28 days”, and “you’re not serious podcaster if you’re not hitting those downloads, you’re just a hobbyist” Plus! Stupid stuff from a "guru" telling us to double our output and our guest co-host drives The Flattering Ram! Our co-host this week is , . Connect with our co-host: , , . Takeaways Monetisation opportunities in podcasting go beyond traditional sponsorships and can include direct sales, merchandise, speaking engagements, and more. Nurturing super fans is a long-term process that requires thoughtful work and strategy. The old school thinking that high download numbers are necessary for monetization is not always true, and alternative approaches can be successful. It's important to have a clear vision and strategy for your podcast, considering factors such as audience, goals, and values. The elitist mindset in the podcasting industry can discourage aspiring podcasters, but it's important to focus on your own journey and passion. Don't let the elitist mindset in podcasting discourage you from starting a podcast. Enjoy the process and focus on your own goals. Having a plan is important for podcasters who want to achieve specific outcomes, such as monetization or building a community. Starting a podcast as a hobby can lead to unexpected opportunities and growth. Building super fans takes time and consistency. Don't expect immediate results. Celebrity podcasts may have an advantage in terms of initial listenership, but building a loyal fan base takes time and effort. Doubling the number of episodes does not necessarily lead to increased listenership. Focus on quality and engaging content. Listenership is more important than download numbers. Focus on building a loyal audience. Shine a light on people doing great things in the podcasting industry and support their work. Want to sing along to the intro? We made you some lyric sheets! Download them here: https://www.inandaroundpodcasting.com/lyrics (no email required). It was essential to get the music of In & Around Podcasting right in order to create a brand that is lighthearted yet authoritative; a brand focused on making subjects that can be quite dry, accessible to anyone interested in the podcasting space. Having gone through the designer brief to create the various cover art (yes, we have more than one!) we started the process of finding a musician and producer that could capture the brand in audio form and elevate it to a high level. Our guest, Catherine Rannus, did just that and crafted an audio brand that stands out in the podcasting industry and creates an unforgettable "earworm" experience and a range of useful segment drops that embody the vibe of the hosts and the segments themselves. About our guest, Catherine Rannus With an extensive repertoire from pop to jazz and classical to traditional, Catherine has been providing live music for weddings and functions for over 20 years. In & Around Podcasting has been designed to respect and live alongside those shows and to be an accessible, inclusive podcast for every single podcaster; a show that allows everyone with an interest in the medium to have a fair, open and transparent view on the podcasting industry and how it affects them - this is your place to be heard.
