Get to know Mauricio Pochettino, soon-to-be head coach of the USMNT
Although we’re still waiting on an official announcement, multiple outlets have reported that Mauricio Pochettino will be the next head coach of the USMNT. Pochettino has coached at some of the biggest clubs in Europe but it seems like his time at Tottenham from 2014-2019 was especially important in his career and arguably the job he’s most known for. Recap: USMNT vs Panama
On Thursday night, The USMNT lost 2-1 to Panama in their second group stage match of the Copa America. Tim Weah received a red card in the 18th minute which meant the U.S. had to play with ten men for the remainder of the match. Folarin Balogun scored four minutes later to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead but then Panama came back and scored in the 26th and 83rd minute to win the match. Christian Pulisic made his debut for AC Milan in a 2-0 win over Bologna on Monday. He started the match and scored Milan’s second goal, with a tremendous strike from just outside the box. He also played a key part in the buildup to their first goal. Get to know AC Milan: Christian Pulisic's new club
Christian Pulisic appears to be heading to AC Milan! At the time of this recording, we were still waiting on an official announcement from the club. But multiple sources have reported that a deal has been agreed upon, that Pulisic is in Italy this week to complete a medical, and that the move will become official soon. With Pulisic set to join AC Milan, I am planning to watch them closely this season. I’m sure many Americans will be doing the same. So I wanted to learn more about the club and how Pulisic will likely fit in. I thought that information would come best from a local journalist who covers Milan on a day to day basis. How has the American contingent impacted Leeds United's relegation battle this season?
Leeds United lost to West Ham on Sunday which left them in the relegation zone with one more match to play. They’re currently two points from safety which means if they want to avoid relegation, they’ll need a win and some help in the final matchday this Sunday. Of course, there is a lot of American interest in Leeds this season. An American, Jesse Marsch, started the season as their manager but was fired in February. Three American players - Weston McKennie, Brenden Aaronson, and Tyler Adams - have logged significant minutes with the team this season. I’ve been curious what the folks in Leeds think about this American contingent and the impact they’ve had on the team. So I reached out to Joe Donnohue and invited him to join the show today. Joe is a Leeds United journalist with the Yorkshire Evening Post, a daily newspaper out of Leeds. He’s also the host of The Scouted Football Podcast which focuses on Under-23 football. This week, Matt Crocker was officially announced as the new Sporting Director for U.S. Soccer. He comes from Southampton FC where he’s been their Director of Football Operations since 2020. Since the announcement, I’ve been trying to read all I can about who he is, what he’s done, and what he might do with the USMNT. I’ve read some good things but one piece that’s been missing for me is: What do they think about him in Southampton? He’s been working there for the past three years in a role similar to the one that U.S. Soccer just hired him for. So what do folks around Southampton think about the job he’s done? Why is Tim Weah playing fullback at Lille?
Tim Weah missed the USMNT’s recent Nations League window due to an injury. But I have good news! He was back on the field this past Sunday where he started and played 81 minutes in Lille’s 3-1 win against Lorient. Weah has been getting a lot of minutes for Lille over the last few months but not at the normal right winger position that USMNT fans are accustomed to. At Lille, he has been playing fullback. On Sunday, he started at right back for the third match in a row. Before then, he had been starting at left back since early February.
