S5 E8: Eric Merill more on training, generations, new recruits, and more! Part 2
Send us a text Growing up in Nebraska, I developed a love for God, community, and service. Directly out of high school, I decided to forgo an opportunity to play NAIA college football and pursue an Associate in Fire Protection Technology, from Southeast Community College. I started my fire service career as a resident firefighter in Snowmass Village, CO. I relocated to Prescott, Arizona in 2006, then started my full-time career with Pine Strawberry Fire District. I have served the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority since 2006, in all ranks up through Training Chief, along with obtaining my Paramedic certification, and member of the wildland team. I had the privilege of serving for ten years as Political Director, and Executive Officer for the IAFF Local 3066. In my career, I have had the pleasure of serving in many training avenues locally, and at the state level. I also have served as an investigator after obtaining my IAAI Fire/ Arson Investigator I and II. I am a constant learner, and an advocate for higher education. I graduated with a B.S. in Fire Administration, from Columbia Southern University in 2018, magna cum laude. I then completed my Certified Public Manager, through Arizona State University, while lateraling into the Training Division from Engine work. I graduated with my M.A. in Organizational Leadership, with an emphasis in Emergency Management Leadership Concentration, in May of 2023, summa cum laude. Within four-months of graduating with my M.A, I promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief, and lateraled to the Chief of Training. I have a beautiful wife and two kids, whom I am intentional to have by my side throughout my career, and retirement. I have served as coach for my son's little league baseball team, and youth football team. In February, I hope to complete Phase-Training with The Mighty Oaks Foundation, to then serve in the capacity of Team Leader. I currently am humbled to serve as an instructor for ISFSI, with the delivery of NFPA 1400: Roadmap for the Modern Fire Instructor, being disseminated across 25 locations throughout the country over the next year. Send us a text Mike Goldstein or “Stickers”. Hails from Milford NH. Love the fire service and forever a student of the craft of firemanship. I was born in Albuquerque NM, lived in Arizona for a while and then California, then finally settled on the Granite State. I pretty much grew up in Nashua, NH. I was a shit for most of my life…worked as a bouncer in a dive bar and even ran with a MC for a little bit. I always had a calling to help others though, and started my career in the first responder field in 2005 as a dispatcher for a private ambulance company. I met my future wife a few years later, and her father inspired me to become a firefighter. I got my start as a “call firefighter” in 2012 and it was all over after that…I was hooked. Ever since I started the fire service, I wanted to know everything about it. In 2018 I was hired as a career firefighter and continued to find my passion for the service. I am a staff/state instructor for the NH Fire Academy, and a bunch of other certs. I’m married to a beautiful woman and have twin girls who are 14. I’m pushing 46 and have currently been with the Derry Fire Department for almost a year. I’m very passionate about RIT, hose ops. I volunteer to help run the NH Explorer Academy every year which is incredibly rewarding. He launched his flagship product called Morning Wood, which why he joined social media recently after a multi -year hiatus. In this episode I talk to my brother from another mother, Dave Mellen: David Mellen is a 20-year student of the fire service, currently serving as a career firefighter/paramedic with the Edwardsville, KS, Fire Department as well a captain with the Reno Township, KS, Volunteer Fire Department. Mellen is a lab instructor for the Johnson County Community College Fire Science program and has sat on several review committees for fire service training publications. He is also an instructor at Firehouse Expo, FDIC, and several other state and local fire schools in addition to being the owner of Valor Fire Training. Eric Jones joined the fire service in 2006 and has served as a volunteer, part-time and full-time firefighter. Eric is currently a Captain and Training Officer with the Scottsburg Fire Department in southern Indiana. Captain Jones is passionate about continuing education and training in the fire service. Send us a text I started as volunteer FF in Spring Valley NY back when I turned 18 at Rockland Hook & Ladder Dept 17 (Also the same department where recently Jared Lloyd lost his life at Evergreen Terrace Apartments.) My parents decided to move after 9/11 as it affected my dads limo business and we came to North Carolina. In Carolina I found a volunteer department to join and remained an active volunteer for 13 years climbing to the rank of Asst Chief Of Training before I got married and moved. I got hired in Mooresville in 2007 while also remaining an active volunteer. I’ve been assigned to an Engine company for most of career until last year when I decided it was time for a change and transferred over to a Ladder company. Send us a text I started as volunteer FF in Spring Valley NY back when I turned 18 at Rockland Hook & Ladder Dept 17 (Also the same department where recently Jared Lloyd lost his life at Evergreen Terrace Apartments.) My parents decided to move after 9/11 as it affected my dads limo business and we came to North Carolina. In Carolina I found a volunteer department to join and remained an active volunteer for 13 years climbing to the rank of Asst Chief Of Training before I got married and moved. I got hired in Mooresville in 2007 while also remaining an active volunteer. I’ve been assigned to an Engine company for most of career until last year when I decided it was time for a change and transferred over to a Ladder company. Send us a text Part 2 with the man, myth, and legend! Ian Bennett began in the fire service in 2006 when he joined the Seattle Fire Department. Always striving to push his knowledge to the next level he spent over four years as a writer and editor for Seattle Fire’s Post Incident Analysis committee and worked for three years as an instructor at the Washington State Fire Academy. After promotion to Lieutenant, he became a recruit instructor and taught there for two years. Every Seattle recruit class conducts live fire training in an acquired structure, and it was in preparation to become a recruit instructor that Ian became obsessed with acquired structure training. Ian founded WCFT after being asked by several outside agencies to assist with live fire training in acquired structures and realizing that there was a need to bring this specific skill set to departments without the resources to develop it on their own. Revisiting Chief Bruce DeArk
Send us a text One of my guests from season 1, Chief Bruce DeArk, passed away recently from cancer. His battle was inspiring, and Bruce gave it all he had. Ever since his funeral, he has been on my mind. He was a great guy and a great firefighter. He fought bravely and tried to inform as many firefighters as he could of the perils of our job when it comes to cancer. After he passed, I had a friend who decided to do his first colonoscopy because of Bruce’s battle. So, I thought I would re-release this podcast in hopes of new listeners finding it and hearing, in his own words, about his battle with cancer. Please get annual physicals, wear your SCBA during overhaul, wash your gear and wash your self after a fire start getting a colonoscopy at 40 and encourage other brothers and sisters to do the same. Send us a text Kaleb Mauzy joined the fire service in 2000, starting his career with the U.S. Forest Service at the Sierra Vista Ranger District, working as a wildland firefighter. After 5 years with the Forest Service, in late 2005 he transitioned into structure firefighting with the Fry Fire District located in Sierra Vista, AZ. Upon getting hired with the Fry Fire District, he built out their wildland program and served as the wildland team coordinator until he was promoted to the position of Battalion Chief. As Battalion Chief, he is responsible for the district’s special operations program (which includes TRT, Wildland, Hazmat, and SWAT medics), the part time employee program, as well as employee training. Battalion Chief Mauzy holds many certifications including Technical Rescue Technician, NWCG Strike Team Leader, and Hazmat Technician. He is also a member of the Cochise County Incident Management Support Team and sits on the regional policy committee. As the fire districts training chief, Chief Mauzy schedules and coordinates all fire districts trainings as well participating in a leadership role in the regional training committee which includes the command training center, firefighter training, and live fire trainings. Send us a text Aaron Adams is the president of Fire Facilities and Tactical Training Systems Inc. He draws on his experience and industry knowledge from both public sector service and private business leadership. Starting his public service career in the Chicago area he joined the police department in Skokie, IL as a police officer and worked as a scout/sniper on the Tactical Intervention Unit and a field training officer. He moved over to the fire service in Palatine, IL and retired after working as a firefighter paramedic, arson investigator, rescue diver, also serving as the dive training coordinator and President of IAFF Local 4588. He moved into private business in the construction manufacturing industry and concurrently accepted a Governor and State Fire Marshal’s appointment to serve as a fire service representative on a safety committee for the state of Illinois for the past decade. Send us a text Jacob is a 21 year “journeyman” of the craft. Starting at Katy Volunteer Fire Department as a Junior Explorer Post Firefighter at 15 years old. He was basically a glorified water boy for all the firefighters who were on the scene of a fire, but he was able to train with them every week and ride the apparatus when there was an open seat. Throughout the years He has moved up in the ranks and changed departments in 2007. He was one of the original full time members ever hired by the Pearland Fire Department where He currently sits today as a proud member of the B shift as a Battalion Chief. He has taught at numerous schools around Texas and has started traveling over the last year to teach his mentoring class. He is very proud to be apart of FD Tactics under Chief Howard Rinewalt who gave him his start in presenting his class. He is first a Husband and a Father to a beautiful family back home. Wife Lauren and son Luke. He enjoys hunting and playing golf on his days off. Send us a text On October 11, 2018, Hanover County Fire-EMS experienced the tragic LODD of Lt. Brad Clark. Over the past 2 and a half years since Brad’s death, Melanie has made it her life’s mission to carry on his legacy. She has left a career in dental administration behind to focus on highway safety awareness within the fire service, to change and enhance move over laws in Virginia and to raise awareness about the move over laws to its citizens and visitors. She has gone from someone who would be described as quiet, especially compared to her VERY outspoken husband, to someone who cannot be silenced. On any given day, you can find Melanie at the Virginia State House meeting with lawmakers in the House of Delegates and Senate, speaking in front of a group of public safety professionals at conference’s to include FDIC international, Texas Fire Chiefs, Drive Smart Virginia, Virginia Occupational Safety and Health annual conference to include a few. She also works closely with the Tunnel To Towers Foundation, who came to her aid in the early days after Brad’s death. Recently she launched a Move Over Va Facebook page that highlights the service of a firefighter, police officer, or tow truck operator weekly for Move Over Monday, to remind motorists the importance of Moving Over for all emergency personnel who work our dangerous roadways daily. She has transformed herself, while simultaneously grieving the loss of her soulmate, rising to the challenge and clearly seeing God’s vision for her to press forward. He is a past president of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors and is the 2015 recipient of the George D. Post, Instructor of the Year Award from the ISFSI. He serves on the executive advisory board of Fire Engineering Magazine and FDIC and is author of the Volunteer Training Officer's Handbook from Pennwell Publishing. Remembering Chuck Williams and Brenda Cowan

It is the month the LFD lost 2 firefighters, Chuck Williams was killed on February 17, 1997 and Brenda was killed on February 13, 2004.
