The Future IS Audio (the podcast) is an audio accompaniment for The Future IS Audio newsletter, homed on LinkedIn. This article was written and read by long-time Podcaster and Professional Podcast Editor, Josh Liston from Australia. In this show Josh wants to share both his love and appreciation for the audio medium (Podcasting, Audiobooks, Audio-dramas, and Voice-Over) as well as share all the lessons he's learned in his 13+ years in the medium that have helped him make better (and more sustainable) audio programs. To be clear, we're not anti-Video Podcasting over here, we're just pro Audio-first Podcasting. [ This feed was...

Cliffhanger-Openers to every episode of your show. These can be great, but most often are not. Adding Background Music to every segment of the production. The emotionality in the melody of the music can enhance the mood of your Podcast (when it's perfectly chosen or composed to suit the episode), but it can also distort the intended delivery and tone of the dialogue. It's also a poor substitute for putting real emotion and intention into the voice recording itself. Using Music and Sound Design Elements straight out of a 2014 Tim Ferriss YouTube Video. Overloading your production with audio clips from film and TV from the 70's, 80's and 90's. I love this stuff personally (in moderation), but too much of this can feel like, 'HEY! I've got a new toy with heaps of buttons on it, and here's a bunch of now 30 year old noises I like." What makes a Podcast sound dated to you? Happy Podcasting! …. The Future IS Audio newsletter on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/podcast-growth-straightforward-just-guest-other-shows-josh-liston-5bwbc/ TL;DR: Guesting on other Podcasts is amazing and you should definitely jump on the majority of opportunities to do so, but don't let your success or lack thereof getting booked define your value as a Podcaster. No single piece of Podcast Growth Advice bothers me quite as much as "just be a guest on other shows" does, like it's so easy to do. As the great Alban Brooke (Head of Marketing at BuzzSprout) said recently on X, "If it (Guesting) was super easy then we’d all be doing it constantly" , and I couldn't have said it better myself. I've been living and breathing Podcasting and the Podcast Medium since 2012, and I've never met a single person (outside of domain experts, famous folks, and subculture superstars) that find getting booked on Podcasts as a Guest, easy. In fact, it's rare, it's difficult, and is often outpaced by the sheer rejection of trying to get booked. My advice would be to Share the H out of the shows you CARE most about, and instead of thinking, "how can I get on that show so they can help me grow?", start by thinking, "what can I do (over the long-term) to help them grow?" Good things come most often from a good place. The other short-long of it: Although I believe that being a Guest on other shows is incredibly valuable for growing your own show, anyone out there pushing "Guesting" as an easy to implement solve-all for growing your Podcast, is leaving out a great chunk of the process and the negative impact of continued-rejection in the Arts, and in business. The Future IS Audio newsletter on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/3-places-start-your-podcast-edit-josh-liston-6jvic TL;DR: I'm an Audio Podcast Super Fan and a Video Podcast Dabbler. Today's Newsletter is purely anecdotal, and I'm not sure what it really means, but I feel like it means something. I asked myself what format of Podcasting (audio or video) has held my interest the longest and/or which format I burn out on the fastest, and I came to the following numbers. Note: I'm most often Subscribed to 40-50 programs at a time in both Overcast (audio) and YouTube (video). Format vs Fandom (the Questions): How many audio Podcasts do I still listen to that I started Listening to 2 or more years ago? = 20-25 episodes per week (to completion of each episode). How many YouTube Channels do I still consume (that don't also offer an audio version) that I started watching 2+ years ago? = 1 (Bandrew Scott's Podcastage main channel). Video has been and continues to be a useful tool for finding and sampling new shows that I might like, and if I do like them and they do offer audio Subscription (some don't which PMTHO), I'll then move them over to my long-term consumption app, Overcast for iOS. One last note, I still miss the shows that for whatever reason stopped producing their Audio Podcast ('Crash Course in Awesome' and 'CD Baby's DIY Musician Podcast'), yet I can't name a single YT Channel that has stopped making their show that makes me feel that way. …. The Future IS Audio newsletter on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/3-places-start-your-podcast-edit-josh-liston-6jvic TL;DR: Start by cutting some (or all) of the things that would really really really annoy you as Podcast Listener. Not everyone can afford Professional Podcast Editing, nor do they need it. In fact, I’d encourage you TO edit your own show at least for a little while, as the lessons you’ll learn around your own speech patterns, pacing, word choices and verbal disfluencies (read: crutch words and verbal tics) are absolutely invaluable to you as a communicator. A 3-part primer on Podcast Editing: Low-hanging Fruit. (Cut stand-alone ums, ahs, likes, you know(s), coughs, sniffs, desk knocks, off-air conversations with people in the room, and clearings-of-the-throat). Any (non-entertaining) Parts. (Unless it's really funny or fun, cut out technical issues, connection issues, drop-outs and glitches, looking up names, fact-checking, confirming URLs, and saying hello to endless people in the chatroom or on the stream. Don’t make your on-demand Audience(s) feel like a second class citizens). The Promise of your Podcast. (Cut standalone segments that work against the intention/promise of your show. Profanity if your show is Clean. Silly if your show is serious. Overly serious if your show is meant to be light and bright. Political if you’re not). If you start your Podcast Edit with those three elements in mind, you might not need to ever get more granular with your editing, a light edit might be all you need. …. The Mute Function Is More Useful Than AI (In Podcasting). I’ve found myself more than a little down-in-the-mouth of late, reading and listening to all the discussions around AI in Podcasting, and its potential impact on our medium. With prominent voices in the space even going as far as to suggest that the human element of Podcasting may soon be superseded by AI and ASI Agents. Now, whether or not you fell that that particular line of thinking is correct, is actually not the point of today’s post, I’m simply here to remind you that the thoughts of a singular Technologist (or a group of Technologists) can only affect a Podcaster to the extent that we allow it to. You have the option to simply disengage in conversations that suggest that the days of human connection are numbered Podcasting, and if you’re not willing to give at least part of your Craft over to AI then you’re going to fall so far behind that failure is inevitable. You can just shut all that stuff out. TL;DR: Save all the energy that you might otherwise spend on arguing with people on Reddit, Discord, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. about AI, and just go make more cool sh*t! The other Short-long of it: It’s often easier to unleash your creative flair onto the world in the form of a well-constructed rebuttal to the prognosticators in your medium, but just try to redirect that momentary frustration into ongoing fuel for making. TL;DR: If you’ve done the work to produce a super polished audio show, then you’re not putting up an inferior product to video on YouTube, just a different one. Audio on YouTube is NOT fake video, it's expanded accessibility. 4 Reasons TO put Audio-only episodes on YouTube: For Increased Accessibility. (Every day at my day job I sell TV's to folks from across the age and cultural spectrum, and the number of people that ask about running Wireless Headphones out of their TV's so they can easily listen to programs and shows continues to surprise me. YouTube is the app that gets the majority of mentions from Customers, and I think it's because a) the Customer themselves has mastered the YouTube interface and wants to stay there for everything, and b) the non-English versions of the YouTube app on the major TV-OS offerings are stable and navigable). To allow non-technical people to map listening progress seamlessly across multiple devices. To allow people (who Care) to comment, give a thumbs up, Subscribe to your show, and even support your show on-platform. To take advantage of the streamlined UX (User Experience) on YouTube. (There is no account required to get to the content, and the YouTube app doesn't hassle you every second day for your email address and for your preferred genres/tastes/interests before you get to LiSTNR .... sorry .... sorry, I meant listen). The caveat I often hear about Audio-on-YouTube is the "extreme drop-off rate" , which I believe is real, but I would posit that the drop-off rate for almost all content posted to YT (audio, video, amateur mime, everything that's NOT Cats) is "extreme". The Short-long of it: If someone likes to Listen to shows, they don't really care how or where it happens, as long as it works and it's as simple as Click Link >>> Press Play. .... Where did all the Soundseeing Tours go in Podcasting? TL;DR - Your Podcast doesn’t have to be an Interview Show or a Panel Show built (from format to presentation) to enable video production. It can be different, unique, more. In 2012, when I first started ramping up my Podcast consumption into overdrive, one genre that I always enjoyed was the Soundseeing Tour genre. Travel, Language and Culture all wrapped up into an incredibly organic form of audio-storytelling. I’m not sure any Podcast genre has had me on the edge of my seat quite the way Soundseeing Tours did back in the day: What is going to happen next, and what will I hear next? So, I guess the question becomes, why aren’t Soundseeing Tours still getting produced, and if they are, why aren’t they getting shared, promoted and embraced by Podcast Listeners and/or the Podcasting Industry? At the risk of sounding anti-video here (that’s not my intention), I think the reason is pretty clear, if your mindset is Video-First, then much of what makes Soundseeing Tours so unique can be easily reframed as uniquely-annoying elements of producing a show. Planning for travel and recording locations. Physical movement, and the ability to move and communicate at the same time. Dealing with unknown environmental variables like weather, temperature, noise and human activity. Permission and privacy considerations when recording on-location. The increased need for advanced storytelling skills to describe the Tour / Location in the audio format. Call me selfish, but I genuinely hope we see (and hear) a return of the Soundseeing Tours in 2025. I want to experience more audio tours from Japan, Africa, Newfoundland (Canada), and the Pacific North East in the USA. I miss closing my eyes and just escaping to a different part of the world. Theatre of the Mind is real folks, and audio is where the magic starts. ….. If you happen to have Listened to some unique audio in Podcasting lately, please post in the comments here on LinkedIn or DM Josh on Instagram @joshuacliston . Speak to you again soon, and bye for now.

[ Audio-article recorded using the Rode Wireless Micro USB-C System ]. 'The Future IS Audio' newsletter on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/slayers-buffyverse-story-audio-storytelling-gave-me-josh-liston-nzgvc/ Slayers: A Buffyverse Story - Audio Storytelling That Gave Me Goosebumps. In 2023, Audible released an exclusive program called Slayers: A Buffyverse Story - an original Buffy the Vampire Slayer audio-drama, co-written and narrated by members of the original Buffy cast. Now, I need to preface what I’m about to say by letting you know that Buffy The Vampire Slayer was my absolute favourite show growing up, and I consider the Buffy episode titled “The Body” as the best episode of television ever put to air. So yeah, I’m a little biased here. When I first hit play on the Slayers audiobook and James Marster's voice (who portrayed Spike on Buffy and also on Angel) came through my headphones, I had goosebumps running down my arms and tears forming in my eyes. When I heard Charisma Carpenter’s voice later on in the production, I couldn’t help but smile; Cordelia was getting some of the spotlight her character deserved and perhaps didn’t get in the original Buffyverse shows. It was Theatre-of-the-Mind at its most powerful. I still watch Buffy on a regular basis and although I still enjoy it very much (it’s comfort-viewing for me at this point). I haven’t had a deep emotional response to anything Buffy related in over 20 years like I did to the Slayers audiobook. It was just me, my headphones, and the human voice, and it was the most intense reaction I’ve had to a piece of art in many years. The last time I remember being completely blown away by a creative work was Season 1 of Ted Lasso, albeit in a very different way, but this was even more intense. Slayers taking several much-loved characters and rendering them in the most intimate of dramatic mediums (being audio) elicited a reaction that was beyond pure nostalgia, it was pure joy. It’s not often that I find myself thinking, “I’m so grateful that this was made”, and Slayers made me feel that way. I clearly needed an original yet familiar story, told like it was told just for me, and the audio-drama format allowed for that revelatory experience to happen. Slayers was my favourite Audiobook of the past several years, it was beautifully written, and the performances and production are as good as it gets. Check it out, and let me know your thoughts. .... PS. I put my initial reactions to Slayers back in 2023 on my Instagram profile @joshuacliston - but I thought I might include the audio from that video right here in this episode, so you can hear a life-long Buffy fan expressing their reaction to Slayers in-t

TLDR; Wear Headphones. 9 Reasons Headphones are the Key to a Professional Podcast Recording Session. 1. You’ll know if there’s a catastrophic noise being baked into the recording (electrical hum, static noise, buzzing sounds). 2. You won’t be off-mic half of the time. (You can hear when you’re in the sweet spot of your microphone, and when you’re not). 3. Increased awareness of Plosives (hard P’S and B’s), Mouth-noises (YUCK!), and Proximity Effect (overemphasised and potentially muddy bass in the voice). 4. Awareness of rubbing, zipping and scratching of clothing, jewellery, furniture, mic stand, and the microphone itself. 5. You can get more consistent levels between speakers on the recording, which can reduce post-production time and lessen the need for automated and potentially expensive levelling tools. 6. You can make choices about what environmental noises are actually making it into the recording. (You won’t waste time continually referencing things that are barely audible on the actual recording). 7. You’ll know if you’re baking-in destructive or bad sounding audio effects into the recording (overly aggressive noise-gates, reverb effects, or too much compression and/or bass and treble boost). 8. You’ll be able to hear everyone in the room that’s on a mic, not just the person closest to you by proximity (or simply the loudest person(s) in the room). This allows for quieter speakers to get heard, and get their turn … particularly when lots of cross-talk is occurring in the conversation, or speakers aren’t facing each other directly. Headphones create a level playing field for "being heard". 9. Producers can talk to you IRT yet discretely via your headphones without baking that conversation into the recording - if they have a talk-back function on their mixing or recording console. If you need to talk Headphones, or Podcasting in general, feel free to send me an email ( josh@jcaldigital.org ) or DM me on X @joshuacliston or Instagram @joshuacliston Have a great week, and happy Podcasting.

So, why is Lofty on the show? Well, that's a simple one, Josh absolute loves his audiobook version of "Lofty - My Life In Short", and counts it among his favourite biographies he's ever listened to. Coffee is also Punk Rock: https://buymeacoffee.com/pipr I wish someone had've sat me down in November 2011 and gave me this list. Your friends, family and colleagues are all starting to get sick of you talking about a topic - but you’ve still got so much more to say (and share) about that topic. You’re able to have constructive conversations about the flaws in, and issues around, a topic, without getting upset or offended by opposing points of view ( you will get those on the internet, trust me! ) You’ve written down notes for a test episode but you didn’t really need them when you went to do your test-record. You were able to speak passionately about your topic without the script (even if what you said wasn’t exactly what you had written down). You can see a path to covering costs (or even making money one day), but you don’t actually care too much if you never benefit financially from the show itself ( Passion Focussed Podcaster get frustrated after 6-12months when they haven't made a dime from their Podcasts). Acoustic Treatment is the key to improving the intelligibility of a voice recording in any room. Organically cutting down reverberation and flutter echoes in a recording makes for a much more pleasant listening experience for your audience, and also reduces the need for potentially destructive audio processing technologies (like De-Reverb and to a lesser extent, De-Noise). In this episode Josh shares Part 2 of his recent Acoustic Treatment install in Studio 3.0. To keep the comparison as similar as possible Josh used his iPhone 14 Pro Max Voice Recorder with the phone microphone and recorded from the same 3 locations in the room (the foyer, the main room entrance and the single seater couch closest to the treated wall). Find DSP: https://www.deadsetpodcasting.com Having the knowledge to record your Podcast out-of-the-studio is still an essential skill for Podcasters to posses in 2023. In today's episode Josh shares some tips for getting the best audio on-location, and being professional when out and about. Tips for On-Location Podcast Recording Sessions (part 1) Check your gear. And check it far enough in advance of the recording session that you can rectify any issues you might have with your hardware or software or both. If you create a hardware/software checklist, actually use it!! Be early. And be early enough to get over any issues or reservations you might have about the recording location. Keep any potentially negative thoughts you have about the recording environment to yourself. Your guest or guests don't need to know you're stressed about the acoustic environment. Don't be afraid to adjust the space (with permission of course) to make for the absolute best acoustic environment you can achieve in the on-location space. Dear Podcasters, if you’re bulk recording interviews with guests prior to your show’s launch - please actually launch the show and put those episodes out. (And if you decide not to launch, or simply the launch is delayed, please let your guest know what is happening). Guests across the spectrum are becoming more and more reluctant to give their time to New Podcasts (regardless of the creators history in the medium) due to having so much of their own time wasted in the past - guesting on shows that never came out. I myself was part of a local government Arts project in mid-2021 that took around 3 months to complete and deliver. The project has only recently been made available on the local council website and still isn’t available as a traditional podcast (as at August 19th 2022). The same way that I may have played a part in discrediting Podcasting, locally (within the arts community), your show not releasing Podcast interviews (and keeping your guests in the dark as to why) may be discrediting Podcasting, globally. So again, please launch your show with fewer interviews in the can, and focus on growing your skills, growing your audience, and delivering better and better interviews over time. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work." ~ Ira Glass (This American Life). Play Along at Home. Hey ScumBaggers, Josh here from the Sounds Unprofitable newsletter. Where we try our best, to do our worst, and our mission statement was written by Fred Durst. As you might’ve noticed we’ve hired every degenerate in the Podcasting space to help us achieve our aim, of being unemployed and drowning in shame. And we want the same for you, you, you!! We’re not here to give you knowledge, research or motivation: we’re here to do next-to nothing, and take a permanent vacation. Stick around for semi-readable articles like this one: “How to pre-purchase the Choad-Master Blow 2.0 on GE Finance and tap your retirement accounts to cover the payments” ..cause folks, the author of this article is the perfect person, she looks like Elizabeth Olsen and avoids taxes like Willie Nelson. So if you’re sick of reading run-of-the-mill podcasting articles, and would prefer to hear about running-on-pills and making podcasting farcical, make sure you keep tuning your radios to our on-demand RSS powered telepathic premium posts, and I’ll see in you my second ex-wife’s kitchen on Sunday for a poorly cooked roast. Keep following your dreams, and feeding your soul, I’m off to close all my bank accounts and miss my next payroll. Your plan was always to start another show and for your current show just to be a learning experience. Along the same lines, you want to learn something new from your extra show and bring that knowledge back to your main show. 2. You're getting over the genre of your current show, and you want to make a graceful exit into another genre or sub-niche. 3. You simply want to host, produce and promote more than one show, because you're passionate about multiple subject matters, and the success of one particular show means less to you than getting to talk about myriad topics across multiple shows. Limiting your audience to the point where it's either not sustainable long-term, or it's simply not exciting enough long-term, may bring your show to a close well before its time. This episode is probably the most extemporaneous episode ever of Deadset Podcasting, so the ideas most certainly have holes (many many holes) but the basic takeaway is this: "Start out your show a little broader in the niche, and then follow your audience into the sub-niches that most interest both them and yourself. Test it with someone non-technical, so you can improve your ability to troubleshoot remotely. 4: Right before your call, listen to your guest(s) speak at 1X (if you can), so you're not caught off guard by the pace of their IRL speaking voice. 5: Let your guest know that if the call drops out, that YOU will call them back. 6: Let your guest(s) know that if there are technical or connection issues, that you may stop them abruptly to correct the issue, and they should not take it personally. It's all in aid of getting the very best end product. 7: Don't be afraid to let your guest(s) circle back and re-answer. (There is often pure gold in an organic re-answer). 8: Don't bring your VIP’s on and then ask them to sit there silently for 5, 10, 15 minutes, while you do your normal intro, plugs and personal story time. https://deadsetpodcasting.com Josh shares the good, the bad, and the ugly of founding the Australian Podcasters Group on Facebook. Communities take a very long to grow. Some users just don’t care what your group's culture and goals are. Companies that service your space can be both amazing and not-so amazing in Facebook groups. Your groups rules are almost certainly too lax, and spammer friendly. You will need to prod and poke new users to read the group rules, and you will need to remind current users when they forget about them. The health of your group is a daily task. The person you need to admin your group when it hits 100, 500, 1000+ users might not be you. @deadsetpod on Twitter and @deadsetpod Instagram Email: hello@deadsetpodcasting.com In the next episode we’re going to be discussing in-person interview tips to make your recordings sound better, and your interviews go more smoothly.

https://www.deadsetpodcasting.com Josh shares some of the things he got right in his first year of Podcasting. And surprisingly he got some important things right, mostly by accident. Josh's first show 'DIY Music Movement' was a from-the-trenches music marketing show, that wanted to fill a gap in the industry: “an active musician with a music marketing podcast”. The Problem: What should I focus on in my first year of podcasting? The Solution: Focus on the minutes inside the audio content (the topics, the laughs, the serious moments, the preparation, the speech intelligibility, the room acoustics, etc.) Podcasting Wins in Year One. Investing in high quality genre appropriate podcast artwork. Spending at least 4 hours on research and preparation for every episode of the podcast. Experimenting with new tools early in their development (Auphonic and SoundCloud PRO). Not being ‘ready’ to interview people, but doing it anyway. Sharing career failures in a positive and helpful way. Eliminating crutch words to decrease editing time. Trusting that the material could really help people. https://www.deadsetpodcasting.com Josh shares some of the biggest mistakes he made in his first year of Podcasting. And there were A LOT of mistakes made! Josh's first show 'DIY Music Movement' was quite the learning experience, and although the lessons hurt at the time, in the end Josh became a better and more generous content creator because of it. The Problem: How do I get good at podcasting, quickly? The Solution: Other than specific technical executions in Podcasting (editing voice and dialogue, recording VOIP, .mp3 file encoding, etc.) the only way to get better, is to make all the mistakes yourself. But you don’t have to make the exact same mistakes that Josh did. Mistakes Made in Year One. Focussing way too much on what was in it for Josh. Not confirming that DIY Music Movement (the podcast name) was available everywhere -including Australia's Business Registry. Starting multiple shows. Not appreciating face-to-face and/or local feedback for the podcast. Buying expensive podcasting equipment that wasn't right for the job. Not finding a Podcast-Buddy. Spending too much time learning about Facebook, Email, Twitter and Wordpress, and not enough time learning how-to produce better podcasts.
