Text me your favorite South Florida memory. Indoor venues for concerts were hard to find back in the day. Your choices were...well, one. The Hollywood Sportatorium. Until 1976 that is. Then in a little town called Sunrise, known mostly for condos, delis and retirees, a magical place was built that would host the biggest names in show biz; from Sinatra to Buffett and more. It was the Sunrise Musical Theater and the stories and memories for those of us who lived here when it was open almost rival that of the Sporto itself. Then, if you wanted a more intimate setting, you only had to drive a few miles east to Fort Lauderdale to a one-of-a-kind musical experience at Musician's Exchange. Despite his pivotal role in designing iconic institutions, roads, cities, and hotels, his name remains obscured to many living in the shadows of his accomplishments. Join us as we unravel the complex narrative of Merrick's life, exploring how he transitioned from a visionary dreamer to a controversial figure in the annals of history. For some, Merrick is hailed as a hero, credited with the creation of Coral Gables, the majestic Biltmore Hotel, and the esteemed University of Miami. Yet, for others, his legacy is tarnished by accusations of racism and exploitation. We invite you to weigh the evidence and decide for yourself: Was George Merrick a hero or a villain? Text me your favorite South Florida memory. When Joseph Young named his local parcel of land Hollywood, he was hoping to mirror in South Florida the burgeoning film industry of its Californian namesake. While the aspiration seemed lofty, South Florida did indeed become a cinematic hotspot, especially during the mid to late 20th century. This week, we delve into two iconic television shows that not only showcased the unique allure of South Florida but also left an indelible mark on American culture. Perhaps no two shows had as much impact as a little half-hour drama about a family living in the Keys with a pet dolphin and another about two cops fighting the drug cartels of the 1980's. In this week's episode we look back on these two entertaining yet vastly different takes on our area and lifestyles. From WQAM in the 60's to WSHE's album rock in the 70's to the new sounds of Country music in the 80's and the advent of great talk radio which would dominate South Florida radio in the 90's, we're taking a TALK down memory lane and reminiscing about the evolution of radio in South Florida over the decades, from its vibrant music scenes to the rise of radio personalities like Rick Shaw and Neil Rogers. Each era brought its own unique flavor to the airwaves, reflecting the changing tastes and cultural shifts of the times. And BTW what is the story behind Bill Monty on tour with KISS? SHOW CORRECTION: While Barry Rose is great at hosting FB pages, the Neil Rogers podcast is not one of his. That's actually Michael Allen Smith. Go listen to the old tapes on the Neil Rogers Show podcast. They were my inspiration for this episode. I listen all the time. My apologies Michael and thanks for the Neil memories. Opened in 1967 and using service and entertainment concepts found at Disnleyland, but pre-Disney World, Pirates World was the go-to place for fun in the South Florida sun with 15 attractions including the original Steeple Chase ride from Coney Island. Its history was a wild ride, (and we don't mean just the Log Flume from the New York World's Fair), highlighted by angry opposition from local politicians, rumors of injury and death in the park, and the drug-fueled concerts featuring rock-n-roll legends that contributed to its downfall. But for those of us who experienced it was a weekend and summer days destination promising exciting rides and a themed amusement park that pre-dated Disney World. Text me your favorite South Florida memory. It used to be that there was only one way to get from Southwest Florida to Southeast Florida, and it took forever. In 1968 a new road opened that allowed for high-speed travel coast-to-coast. You just had to not mind 80 miles of a dangerous two-lane road laden with snakes, panthers and alligators. Original names tossed around were the Everglades Parkway, Swamp Pike and Alligator Lane but there was really only one choice. On this episode of Tales From South Florida it's the Tale of Alligator Alley. Hosted by Bill Monty Support the show Click the Leave A Message link above to text Bill Monty...FREE!
