Hoda Afshar was already set to have a major year before she was approached by the Art Gallery of NSW to create a new exhibition. In 2023, the Iranian-born, Melbourne-based artist has had showings at this year’s Sharjah Biennial in February, as well as the Tarrawarra Biennial and the Museum of Contemporary Art in June. The Melbourne-based photographer is known for her sensitive political images, including ones she took on Manus Island in 2018 and a series shot in Iran where she grapples with her connection to, and disconnect from, her home country.
