In this episode I sit down with Jake Dowd, whose story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of faith and recovery. I first met at an event in Hawaii when he let me sample his $12,000 bottle of wine...and today we got to "talk story" (as they say in Hawaii) Jake shares how he went from being $250,000 in debt and facing marital issues, to making millions by becoming involved in the dangerous world of arms dealing, influenced by the film "War Dogs." A pivotal moment in the episode is Jake's recounting of a supernatural encounter that serves as a turning point in his life. Describing a spiritual battle and his brother's role in it, Jake speaks about experiencing protection through a vision of angels and ultimately finding safety in Jesus. The latter part of the episode focuses on overcoming addiction, restoring his marriage, and experiencing a drug raid. Jake's story emphasizes the role of divine intervention and the spiritual darkness he had to navigate to transform his life. Wondering why you keep hitting the same barriers in your relationship? Perhaps, it's time to dig deeper and reconsider how you create safety and trust. We, Sammy and Spencer, are here to pioneer this unfiltered expedition into the core of relationships. We share our personal tales, mistakes, and victories of nurturing a fortified bond filled with trust. Our discussion unravels how we bridged the gap between us by unearthing our childhood experiences, shedding our defense mechanisms, and revealing our true selves to each other. We shed light on how we navigated the tumultuous waves of our past relationships, and how they often left an indelible mark on our current ones. Unmasking our own insecurities, we reveal how markers from our past can stimulate codependency and a sense of disconnection. We delve into the gravity of vulnerability and sincerity in relationships, and how it forms the unshakeable foundation of a secure partnership. We also discuss our personal endeavors of breaking free from codependent patterns, learning to meet our own needs, and finding a steadfast source of safety in our faith. In conclusion, we impart some pragmatic tips to help you foster an environment of safety and connection in your relationships. We explore how the blame game can build a chasm in relationships and how using "ownership language" can mend it. We also share how forming a genuine connection with a higher power, in our case God, can provide a sense of security and fulfillment that no human being can offer. We used to live in OC and haven't for almost 5 years now. Coming back into town for a quick vacation, it reminded us of past struggles and insecurities. It is a culture dominated by people looking for status, importance, beauty, and ultimately looking for love in all the wrong places. But we also believe christians can enter into shame and blame for a culture like this without knowing how to thrive and get needs met and be a light in the darkness. This episode is a dialogue on our process around it. Enjoy the crazy background noises and the occasional baby wimper. And let us know what you enjoyed about it or what stuck out to you in the ratings!!

"I'm not a good provider". "I'll never feel loved" "I'm a failure." "I have no community" It's difficult when life throws us into things that we are not good at or are new to like parenting, marriage, new jobs, new business... And it's tempting to try and prove through action that we are enough and that we are lovable. How do we avoid that vicious cycle but also continue showing up in "the hard" of life without giving up? In this episode we dive into how to practically work through those feelings and beliefs as well as how to show up with big capacity. Enjoy!

We were recently asked on a podcast review what our connection with God looks like and how we navigate prayer and guidance from God. In this episode we discuss our current season of connection with God despite running 2 businesses, having a 6 month old baby, and all the current challenges of marriage. The truth is that every season looks different and our connection to God might change as well. How do we truly thrive in every season without holding onto the external circumstances we need to "connect with God"? Are some things spiritual but other things aren't? Is God always for us? Are we supposed to spend a certain amount of time in the word? in worship? These are questions we answer in this week's podcast. This week we are responding to instagram DMs. The questions we are answering are, "How is Spencer able to attach to his baby so well? I have never seen a father attach to a newborn like that." and the 2nd question, "How does Sammi keep such a powerful perspective on mothering?" Now, we are new parents...but we do believe our healing journey has set us up for success in so many areas, especially parenting. If you're wondering how to be powerful in the midst of out of control scenarios, this episode is for you.

As a society we love being right and we hate being wrong. Not only do most people hate being wrong, but we feel so deeply unsafe and insecure when we are wrong. We've all heard that "God is in Control." But is it true? We've heard things like, "Everything happens for a reason," or "The Lord Givith and the Lord Taketh Away," and could it be that we misunderstand God's sovereignty? We believe that beliefs like this dictate the way we do life, the lens through which we perceive people and life, and impacts our internal state, freedom, and purpose. In this episode, Sammi and Spencer dialogue about their beliefs and invite you into a discussion about God being in control. They also go through the many questions you guys have asked on her instagram poll and answer them live on the episode. We hope you enjoy this week's episode. Maybe you have been the person that has had huge vision for your life and have fought for the things in life you've wanted or felt called to. Or maybe you've been the monk that has sought fulfillment within and hasn't cared about building or achieving anything in life. Which is right? When is it important to build, fight, run after things and when is it important to look inside yourself and find inner peace and fulfilment? As very driven people, yet hungry for inner fulfillment, Sammi and Spencer have a conversation about the two. Tony Robbins says that the worst form of failure is not the inability to find success, but for those that find success but still feel unfulfilled. So should we be lazy and do nothing and hide our gift? All these questions, Sammi and Spence tackle head on in this episode. If this episode blesses you, please take a moment to rate and review. I interviewed my Dad. He's an alcoholic. I've had a ton of pain and neglect from childhood because of him. His parenting has marked my life. But he has also chosen to confront his biggest failures and pain and although our connection is a work in progress, I have so much respect for the humility that he lives his life with. My dad was pretty distant, disconnected, disassociated for a lot of my childhood. I felt like I was always the problem that needed to be fixed. I always felt like there was something wrong with me and I felt like nobody will ever love me for me...the authentic "me". The process I've walked through with my parents and my father has been a redemptive one. And who better to tell this story than my father...and me. I felt codependent with my mom my whole life. I felt like the only way to satisfy her was by shutting down my heart and emotions. I had so much resentment towards her but DID NOT KNOW IT. So I went through a healing process that lasted nearly a decade to no longer feel powerless and to connect with her. I interviewed my mom this week for the podcast. This is really cool because many of you have heard my story with my mom and the pain thatwe've walked through together as well as the childhood pain and codependency that we've healed from. This episode is for those of you that want insights on how to navigate childhood pain with your parents in your adult life. I get vulnerable. My mom gets vulnerable. And for a lot of you listeners, you're looking for inspiration and "how-to's" for connecting with your parents. When we don't share our pain with our parents, we create distance. When we hold onto resentments, it hurts us. Hopefully this episode will help you get free from some of those areas you fell stuck. And of course if you are looking for deep help in your life to get free from pain and patterns that are subtly controlling your life and relationships, check out our... We just had our baby 2 weeks ago and have been on a podcast hiatus...both enjoying our new little boy and also processing some of the grief and trauma from the labor and birth. We all have moments in our lives that aren't just black and white, good or bad. How do we celebrate without dismissing grief? How do we grieve without living in perpetual hopelessness? A lot of you have been asking about how our birth experience was with Wilder...and this podcast episode is our response. But besides the facts and events, we wanted to share about our raw process and how we navigated through disappintment despite having the most incredible day of our lives. We hope you enjoy this episode. Please take a moment to rate and review the podcast and of course, share with a friend!

We've seen people go after healing and leave christianity entirely. We've seen people take license to just be triggered at everybody that sin't "safe". We've seen people cling to religious legalism when healing and freedom is so close. Whatever the case...there are a lot of "paths" out there to walk in our lives...a lot of options for how to do life and what to worship. While many people have to intentionally question what they believe about God and many really should reconstruct their faith at some level, when do you go too far? At what point do people miss out on the most freeing relationship that ever existed? The truth is that Jesus is the most life-giving source of freedom that ever lived. He is the person of unconditional love. While some emotional health and psychologies philosophize and theorize unconditional love, we worship a real God and person that is the true manifestation of Love. We don't have to fabricate this love in our minds. He's a person that demonstrated this love to us. We wanted to dialogue about God and the gospel and help listeners recenter to Him. If you enjoyed this episode or found it helpful at all, please share with a friend! Who knows, they might need to hear it.

We, as human beings, love to learn new language and understanding and point it at other people rather than ourselves... It is so easy to learn new emotional health language and become more self aware and emotionally Intelligent to then want to point it at others when they/we are triggered. We have done this so many times... And it doesn't help. We've also made turned emotional health into another "fix yourself" process and have resented it in different seasons. If you struggle with needing control or you have been someone that has felt safer by "knowing" or "understanding" things... Then this episode is for you. Sammi and I are moments away from our first baby... We are going to be giving up a lot of freedom. But we often make trade our freedom for relationship and things that we believe will be fulfilling. Some of us do whatever we can to hold onto freedom and commitments and responsibilities feel terrifying. How do you know when you're ready for that exchange? What do you do when you're not ready? In this episode, we talk about our process around trading freedom for what feels like more fulfillment. Should a person's value be reduced to what number they are on a scale of 1-10? Is there more to relationships and dating than how attracted you are to someone? Is attraction even important in relationships, really? What should we do with the lust, attraction, and comparison that society feeds us? Sammi and Spencer have both struggled with eating disorders, a deep need to be seen, noticed, and wanted... And in this episode they discuss what to do with all of this, how to heal, and how to put physical attraction in its proper place. The demonic is very real. And I'm sure if you've been a part of the church for long enough, you've heard of a bunch of different kinds of inner healing methods or styles... We've both experienced the demonic and the supernatural but we haven't built a "deliverance" ministry... This podcast episode answers "why?" In this episode, we share stories of the supernatural and talk about the differences between inner healing and deliverance and how that overlaps with the healing process. Hopefully, some of your boxes will be broken and this dialogue will encourage you to keep an open mind. If you don't think entrepreneurship is vulnerable or that making a business and going after your dreams is triggering, then you have got it all wrong. We would have never created A&F if it weren't for the inner healing process we went through with God. It was scary to try, there was resistance, and there were people that didn't believe in us. But we decided not to settle for mediocrity in our lives...and this is what came as a result. In this episode, we wanted to share our story and the beliefs we had to change to be successful. We've seen people often fall into two extremes of thought... Either "focus on what you want, relentlessly, and confidently expect it until you step into it...be obsessive and go after your dreams." Or... "Just be content...desire for nothing- in fact kill you desires and just be okay with no pleasure or desires fulfilled and definitely don't dream..." Is balance between the two what's healthy? Or is there another way to look at it? How many of us experience fear in relationships? Or fear in general… Fear makes us do all kinds of crazy things… Especially if we are scared we won’t have our needs met. So what do we do? We control. I think if most of us admitted, we would say we all have dealt with control in one way, shape, or form. And not all control is bad, but in relationships, control destroys our connection. Control takes all of our safety away and makes us feel trapped. But what if you’re the one controlling? In this episode, Sammi and Spencer break down control and how to relinquish it so your relationships can have better connection. In this Episode, Spencer and Sammi explore why we have different beliefs and perspectives of God and how those beliefs affect the way we relate to Him and do life. They also talk about what to do to address those views and how to change them and how to heal our pain that might be connected to those views.
