Welcome to Season 2 of MPM! Season 2 is going to be focused on Mastering the Business of Podcasting! You asked and we listened. The episodes we got the most feedback on last year were the episodes that looked at ways to monetize your podcast and have our podcast be a key part of your brand. This season we are going to dive deeper into the many ways that your podcast can be a key part of your brand. We are talking to experts like: Arielle Nissenblatt about Marketing Your Podcast, Jennifer Navarette about Web3 and Podcasting 2.0, Zach & Rock from SquadCast about automations that can help your workflow, Jess Kupferman about building a community, and so many other experts that have their podcast as a key part of their business. We also want to bring you along on our monetization journey and how we are building our brand and our business with our podcast. Some exciting things have been happening over here at KaSa Media- and we have learned important lessons along the way that we think will help you to think creatively about how your podcast can be a vital part of your business! As you know, we have a membership group to support podcasters . This thriving community is growing and we are adding more levels to this membership group! In talking with our community, we learned that there are people who would be served by joining a micro-membership and there are people that would like a higher-level business focused membership. We are adding both of those in the next month and we cannot wait to tell you about it! Our lessons we learn will help you to start a successful membership as well. We stopped offering our key course…this was a hard decision but a very important one. Our key program- Launching & Leveraging Your Podcast for Accelerated Success was a 10 week program- and it was wonderful!!!! Yet- our focus has changed and shifted and it was important for us to remain focused. We are now creating a low-cost, evergreen program to help people launch their podcasts. We can’t wait to tell you what we learn from that process! Finally, we have leaned into David’s audio/visual expertise and Tiphany’s professiona

New Year, new goals! As we start a new year it is so powerful to plan what the focus for the new year will be. David & Tiphany give you a behind the scenes "look" at what our podcasting goals for 2023 are. Fun back story: Mastering the Podcaster Mindset podcast was created in 2021 as a way to support our podcast students and our membership group. We noticed that the people in our community had many questions that needed to be answered and we felt a podcast was a terrific way to answer those questions. With that purpose, we never marketed this podcast outside of that group. YET...the Mastering the Podcaster Mindset audience continued to grow and grow! So for 2023 we are experimenting with some growth strategies to see if we can continue to grow our podcast audience. We are: Starting a YouTube Channel Becoming more regular with blogging Promoting the Podcast on social media outside of just our Facebook community Focusing on live meetups and conferences to make in-person connections Other episodes you will enjoy: Benefits of Attending Podfest Expo - we love this episode! It was recorded with a few members of our Mastering the Art of Podcasting Membership group and really shows the benefits of attending a podcast conference. 5 Ways to Nurture a Tiny Podcast Audience - We love this episode because we believe so strongly in creating strong community connections. In part 2 of our discussion on the number 1 way to monetize your podcast (even with a small podcast audience) we are discussing two terrific ways to monetize: Planning a retreat Running a mastermind A retreat is a focused vacation that you, the host plan for your guests. The retreat has a focus such as relaxation, rejuvenation, connection, business growth etc... A big bonus of planning a retreat is that on top of making some money- you also get a free vacation! A mastermind is a bit like a course but more focused with a like-minded group of people that want to dive deeper into solving a problem or growing their business. Masterminds are often high-ticket offers. If you would like help monetizing your podcast, come join our Mastering the Art of Podcasting Membership Group ! The membership group is a group of like-minded people that are focusing on growing their audience, honing their podcasting craft, and monetizing their podcast. Many "experts" will tell you that you need thousands of downloads before you can even think of monetizing your podcast. We respectfully disagree. Giant download numbers were never anything we found we needed to have our podcast start making us money. New podcasters and podcasters with smaller shows just need to be creative. We like focusing on these things when thinking about monetizing your podcast: Building strong, authentic connections with your audience Learning what your audience needs and wants from you Creating content that brings value to your audience If you focus on those things and have a creative, curious mindset- monetizing is pretty darn easy! The number one way we found to monetize a podcast is...... creating a course, masterclass, membership and/or retreat. This topic is so rich that we decided to break it up into two parts. Part 1 is all about: Memberships Courses Would you like to know more about how to start a membership or course? This is part 2 of a 2 part interview. Continuing our conversation with Gordon Firemark. Entertainment lawyer, Podcast law expert, and one of the best voices in the industry. Gordon has been a podcaster for more than a decade and is known as The Podcast Lawyer. We ask him 3 big podcast legal questions: Q1- Do you need a guest release? Q2- Podcasts about personal life, personal stories about traumatic events- do they have to worry about libel when sharing personal story? Ex: Amber Heard & Johnny Depp… Q3- Can I read books on my podcast? And Gordon gives us his most important bits of legal advice: Be professional- 1) set it up like a biz…agreements, LLC 2) have agreements/contracts with whoever you are working with or laws will assume you are joint owners 3) Trademark your title- be distinctive in your title, descriptiveness in title won’t allow for trademark 4) Monetizing- clearly document relationships with customers and partners. Vague & ambiguous leads to disagreements/lawsuits- always use precise & clear language Check out Gordon's Links: podcastrelease.com (free podcast guest release form) podcastlawbook.com (my ebook) Podcastlawforms.com (legal templates for podcasters) easylegalforpodcasters.com (how and why to course on getting legal structures in place for maximum success) Other Episodes You Will enjoy: What is the Biggest Legal Mistake Podcasters Make? Building a brand around your podcast that makes people feel seen, heard, and that they identify with is important. People want to be a part of the community you are creating. It makes them feel connected. When people feel connected, they feel like they have found their tribe. This is part 2 of our interview with Caila Litman. Click here to listen to part 1. Advice from Caila about creating a lifestyle brand: Start with “Do what inspires you, energizes you, lights you up Everyone is looking for new ways to be discovered by the individual- word of mouth is the number one way to grow- word of mouth can create a ground swell discoverability Publish to youtube- Youtube has great discoverability Podcast listeners more open, curiosity based, less worried about how perceived by the world Desire for community is high among podcast listeners- It is a passive form of engagement to be a member of the podcast community so it is very appealing. Overlap of community and advertising/sponsorships- storytelling ad reads (like listening from a friend- recommendations are remembered easier than random ads) Big audience does not mean quality audience Connect with Caila Litman: Twitter: cailatess LinkedIn: Caila Litman Read Caila's article here Connect with us: Join our FREE Facebook community: Mastering the Podcaster Mindset Support Group Get the Guide “ The Biggest Mistake Podcaster Make and How to Avoid It ”: DM us on IG: @ podcastermindset ------- Edited by: David Sais, The Sexy Sound Guy Produced by: KaSa Media Productions, LLC

(Part 1 of a 2 part interview) Our guest this week is Caila Litman. Caila is a journalist, producer, Marketing & Brand Development Manager championing audio in the corporate world. Caila is passionate about the power of audio and has dedicated her career to promoting and educating people about podcasting. We read an article Caila wrote and immediately became fascinated with the concept. Caila wrote that podcasts are lifestyle brands. Here are a few takeaways from our conversation with Caila: Mindset: You have to believe that your podcast is a lifestyle brand so that you can create content and promote your podcast in such a way that people WANT to have you as part of their personal identity Millennial culture is dominated by social media and people signaling what they value by what they purchase & consume. What you consume & what you like is a big part of your identity- podcasts become part of that identity. As a podcaster, think about how you want to reach your audience like Lulu Lemon does- what do you want to present to the world/what do you care about/what is your personal brand? The whole idea of fitting in is not as valuable to the new generation- what do people really care about? How has society shifted? A perfectionist is someone who has a personality that strives for flawlessness. This is often accomplished through fixating on imperfections, trying to control situations, working hard, or being critical of the self or others. I personally am a recovering perfectionist. 3 Traits of Perfection that can hold you back: Setting unrealistic standards Focusing on RESULTS rather than the JOURNEY Fear of failure which can lead to procrastination & avoidance Podcasting is not for everyone, but if you feel called to create a podcast don’t let perfectionism stop you. Get started, do it messy, have fun, pivot, change, learn, fail, and grow. If you can embrace the process then podcasting can be fun, rewarding, expansive, and open new doors to opportunities you never knew existed before. Last week we interviewed Chris Krimitsos, the founder of Podfest Expo- the largest podcast conference in the world. He said something about having a small audience that really stuck with us… Chris Krimitsos said “You're lucky if you get 10 downloads a show out of the gate, right? I would look at that 10 downloads and think to myself, how can I love up on these individuals? So I could get to 15 or 20 downloads…” We are going to dig into that more today- how do we take a tiny audience, love on them & nurture them and grow that audience into a larger audience? We are passionate about the power of a strong, engaged community. We are also passionate about harnessing the power of networking to grow your audience, grow your craft, and grow your knowledge. This week's guest is Chris Krimitsos, founder of Podfest Expo. Podfest Expo is the world's largest podcast conference- they even hold the Guinness Book of World Records for 2 years in a row!!! Today we talk to Chris about how Podfest Expo started as a grassroots event and grew to the "must-attend" event it is today. Our Takeaways: Podfest started organically to help the people he got started. Don’t close doors ahead of time- take the meeting and decide after. Listen to the community and design what they want. Give ownership to the community. Community comes first. Chris' advice to new podcasters comes from his book called “Start Ugly”. Start ugly and learn along the process- 1)get rid of failure concept- trial & error. Get an education about podcasting. 2)Biggest podcasters are not on their first concept- they pivot and grow. 3)Look at 10 downloads- how can I love on these individuals, nurture community and grow to 15. It is crucial that podcasters meet one & other. 1) connect with peers 2) see what is going on across the industry 3) trade shows to see what is happening across the industry. Would you like to attend Podfest Expo? We have a few FREE tickets to share with our listener community. We would love to meet you in person at the best podcasting event of the year. Today we get to talk about the best techniques to get more podcast reviews. Reviews and ratings create visibility. The more visible you are, the more listeners you have the possibility of reaching. You’ll also become more visible to potential sponsors and advertisers. Platforms like Apple podcasts and Stitcher are controlled by algorithms, so your overall ranking and algorithm include rankings and reviews. Podcast reviews also influence social proof. Low ratings repel, and higher ratings attract. You need your cheerleaders to raise you up. When one person acknowledges your greatness, others naturally start to see it as well. It gives you a prequalified authority without having to prove it. The 5 techniques we’ve found helpful for getting more reviews are: Explore your mindset barriers Have a clear, direct call to action Ask friends, fans, & people in your network to leave reviews Shout out listeners that leave reviews Have a contest or giveaway Apps to leave ratings & reviews: Apple podcasts Castbox Podchaser Podcast Addict Stitcher Goodpods For a limited time, we are opening the doors to our membership group to you, dear listener. Podcasting can be a very isolating activity. As the podcaster, we often sit alone in front of our computer - doing hours of research, staying on top of social media engagement, building our website, the list goes on. We sit alone behind our mic when we record hoping we are saying things in a way that will resonate with our audience. Often this process can make us feel alone, isolated, and unsure of what we are doing. These feelings of isolation can also build up to frustration- wondering if we are doing it all wrong. Imposter syndrome can kick in- is anyone even listening? Is my message resonating? So how do we continue to do this thing we love- podcasting…without feeling isolated, frustrated, or confused? We found the best way to alleviate all of these issues is to be an active member of a community of individuals with similar goals. Being an active, engaged member of a community like this can turn an isolating activity like podcasting into a connected and exhilarating venture.. How many episodes should I have before I launch? This question gets asked so many times in every podcasting forum that we participate in and the number varies widely! There are people that say they have 20-30 episodes already recorded and ready to upload. There are people saying they record the same week or even day that they post a podcast episode. Batch recording is a term used to describe recording several podcast episodes at once. A “batch” is a group… like baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies. In summary: Batch recording in small batches is very helpful to keeping a systematized workflow and lowering the stress of uploading and staying consistent. But be aware that you are not batch recording so many episodes that you do not stay in alignment with your audience's pain points or your areas of interest. Especially in your first 6 months of podcasting, you will grow and change so much that it is important to stay nimble. General recommendation: when launching have your trailer and 2-3 episodes ready to upload so that when you launch people have a few episodes to listen to. From then, try keep at least 2 weeks ahead of schedule so that you do not have to stress about consistently uploading. Because as you all know, consistency matters. Did you know that you can set your podcast up as a corporation to give you maximum tax benefits? This week's podcast guest, Jeni Thomas is both a podcaster and a tax expert. She gives us some great tips for setting our podcast up as a business. Episode takeaways: Know the endgame for your podcast- is it a hobby or business? The IRS frowns on hobbies- cannot deduct expenses. So set your podcast up as a business from day 1. LLC or Corp?-LLC is business entity… SCorp is a tax classification- layer on top of the LLC SCorp has stand alone 1120s all income and expenses go through 1120s- K1 (like a W2) split profit…K1 goes on 1040 and taxed at regular tax rate Save expenses, receipts, mileage logs. Jeni recommends the Stride App. SCorp takes deductions- any biz costs…ex: podcast host, online recording, equipment, software, travel to conference (hotel, airfare, mileage, meals)- Red flags - stay away from meals & entertainment unless at a conference, home office Sponsorships- any income over $600 reported to IRS (1099 from the company) Be sure to give biz EIN# (not SS#) to sponsors LLC protects from legal suits- cannot come after you personally Have a separate bank account for everything to do with podcast Ok to take biz expenses out of personal account in the beginning. However, income needs to go into a business account from ad rev or sponsorships. Any $$ personally invested in your biz/podcast is considered a “loan from the shareholder” Take list of expenses to accountant- loan from shareholder…K1 comes off your taxable income or adds to your taxable income Pay yourself through corp- deduction- will pay SS Join our membership and get Jeni's tax masterclass! “Our job is to inspire people to change their stories so that they can change their lives.” That story for the Podcaster and their listener is the transformational journey. David drew a small picture on our whiteboard with a stick figure (our listener), a bridge that is a fantastic blue line representation of the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco (the journey), and a little house (where we want to take them). Transformational- make a thorough or dramatic change Listener transformational journey- imagine a path your listener is walking…. Our guest this week is Bri Campano aka The Clever Biotch. Bri is the host of Clever Conversations podcast. Bri was a podcasting student of ours that became a member of our podcast membership group and is now a highly valued contributing member of our KaSa Media Production family. EpisodeTakeaways: Giving speeches is easy…. Podcasts are vulnerable…Voice in her head that says “Nobody cares what you are saying. What do you have to say?” Barrier- breakthrough knowing that her words are important and she can make a difference Just do it! Have people around you- mentors, coaches, friends to support and let you know that what you are saying is important Bri did a podcast episode alone where she spoke from her heart and shared a message that made an impact for her. She had an incredible response from listeners because she opened up. Feedback from listeners is so powerful- if listeners' lives are being touched and I have made their day brighter that is more important than downloads. Bri doesn’t even check downloads!!! Bri's big surprise: Her calendar changed dramatically- now she has pre-interviews with amazing people and is doing a series of episodes with a dr about a medical procedure she is going through Another surprise: camaraderie & community! Friends that feel like family. Do it messy- do it crazy- you have to have a starting point- look how much I have grown and improved! Downloads can be useful data point metrics for analyzing, reflecting, and applying what you have learned to improve your podcast. Here are ways podcasters tell us they use download data... The top answer in the poll we created was: Downloads tell me how engaged my listeners are Other feedback we received: Analyzes downloads to see when listenership falls off. The Podcast host can see what is working for the podcast audience and what isn’t working. Listens on each episode help to better understand what content is preferred by listeners and then create more content around those popular topics. Determine if your show is continually expanding reach, and providing content that resonates with the people listening. Downloads can also be a terrific data point to let you know if your growth strategies are making an impact or not. Word of caution: downloads should be one measure of this but not the only measure! If you have worked to create an engaged community- additional metrics can be feedback from listeners, survey data, reviews, direct messages from listeners… these data points can tell you more than just download numbers alone. Downloads numbers can be fickle- we saw our downloads significantly drop during a two-week period in the holidays. This drop had nothing to do with the quality of our shows and more to do with the seasonal busyness of our listeners. _________________________ David & Tiph’s Mic: Earthworks Icon USB Thank you Earthworks Audio for sponsoring our podcast __________________________ Join us at Podfest Expo! This phenomenal woman has 6 podcasts on different subjects from intuitive healing to music, to writing, and more. - Laura started podcasting 10 years ago. Our Takeaways: Laura is savvy and uses the fact that podcasting is a form of media to submit for press access to conferences and festivals, learning & networking, getting interviews for her podcasts Laura has a unique vision of podcasting. She begins a podcast when she has an area she want to learn and grow in! Laura had mindset issues like the rest of us: What do I have to share? Who am I to…? She experienced imposter syndrome and got over it by thinking of podcasting as being a platform for these other people….presenting someone else’s knowledge helped to build her own confidence. By doing this she built her own knowledge Laura sees podcasting as something that opens up doors in other media- TV, celebrity podcasts, celebrity clients…books +podcast creates great marketing for yourself Go for it! As podcasters, it is easy to get caught up in using downloads as our metric for success. However, podcast download numbers are elusive and never totally satisfying. It is a data point that has a metric for success that is always moving and leaves us feeling dissatisfied. Chasing downloads can even make us forget why we created our podcast in the first place. Here are a few of our personal metrics for success: Improve our speech so that we naturally remove filler words (so, like, um, you know....) Reach out to "dream guests" Say Heck Yes! to opportunities that come our way from podcasting Become better interviewers to help facilitate and encourage our guests to share their knowledge and their stories Referenced in this episode: Mastering the Podcaster Mindset, Guest Amanda Chen, episode 7. In our Mastering the Art of Podcasting Membership Group, one of our members was experiencing a block around the name of her podcast. While exploring this block together, we came to an important mindset discovery. Here is a sneak peek into a conversation we had during our last membership group collaborative work session. Takeaways: When we don’t trust our vision and our mission, we can often get derailed by what the “experts” think. The important work really becomes knowing and trusting yourself so that you can make decisions in alignment with your purpose. Understanding your topic and staying true to your topic is important. It is like this podcast, Mastering the Podcaster Mindset- has guests of all different genres & topics- but we have a unified message through all of them because we keep the topic focused on mindset and the art of podcasting. Here is the ultimate podcasting nightmare.... you have an incredible interview with a dream guest and later found out that the interview didn’t get recorded! This nightmare actually happened recently for our podcast, Radical Audacity of Love and Life! Lucky for you listeners, today's episode has a couple of simple solutions to keep that situation from becoming a real-life nightmare. How Back-up Local Recordings Can Save your Episode A local recording is recorded on your computer rather than going through the internet to record. You may be recording on Zoom, Riverside, Squadcast etc. but make sure you record locally in one of these three ways: Turn on audacity/garage band on your computer before recording and ask your guest to do the same Record into an interface like the Zoom PodTrak P4 or Rhode Podcaster Use the software, Sonobus, to record locally with your guest Have you had this recording nightmare happen to you? DM us your nightmare recording stories on IG @podcastermindset - we just might share your story! The best story also gets a free 1:1 coaching session with Tiphany or a recording audit with David- be sure to send in your stories! Today we begin a 5 part series where we dive deep into the 10 Ways to authentically connect with your audience that we introduced last week in Episode 8 . In part 1 of the 5 part series, we look at the first 2 ways to authentically connect with your audience. Let Your Personality Shine Let people connect with the real you, your mission, and your values. An example of this is podcast guest Brianne Davis of the Secret Life podcast, Episode 3 and guest on Tiphany's Love & Life podcast, episode 59 Show your human side- hobbies, volunteer projects, family time, illness (like when we got covid) have a sense of humor Don't over-edit and take out all your imperfections. Imperfections are endearing. An example of this is Tiphany's podcast guest, Erin Ramsey of You're Such a Catch Podcast, episode 34 . Erin snorts when she laughs and we all love it! Authenticity means not pretending to be someone you are not If you are not the expert, don't pretend to be one. An example is our guest, Amanda Chen of the 100 Masked Men Project, episode 7 If you are an expert, show humility Don't position yourself as the hero that can save your listener's problems Our mics for this episode: David- Shure SM57 with A81WS windscreen Tiphany- Shure SM7B Join our FREE Facebook community: Mastering the Podcaster Mindset Support Group Get the Guide “ The Biggest Mistake Podcaster Make and How to Avoid It ”: DM us on IG: @ podcastermindset

Choosing a name for your podcast can be daunting. In this episode, we discuss why clarity & purpose are so important when choosing the name for your podcast. You want your audience to connect with you and to understand what your podcast is about. You want a name that will take your listener on the journey with you. Our original name for this podcast was going to be "Poised at the Intersection of Voice & Story". We LOVED this name. We loved the poetry and imagery. But our community didn't understand the name. That name confused them. It really doesn't matter how much you like a name if it confuses your audience! Remember clarity & purpose. We participated in NaPodPoMo- National Podcast Posting Month for the month of November for my other podcast " Love & Life After Divorce " We also launched this podcast in the month of November. Aaaaannddd...we got very sick with Covid in the midst of these BIG podcasting aspirations. Here are our 8 lessons: Allowing recording to be simple. Have the confidence that you know your topic, take a few simple notes & record! An accountability partner & a support system are so vital to getting big goals accomplished. Great show notes are important! Include transcripts, links to prior episodes, and SEO. Create systems & processes for editing that allow parts of editing to be automatized. Setting & big goal and meeting that goal creates a HUGE sense of accomplishment and pride. Repurpose content! Some larger episodes can be turned into shorter episodes and use transcripts to write blog posts that help your listeners to get the information in another way. Our community of listeners has become like friends & family. We have connected on such a deep level as they message us about episodes and how the episode made a difference in their lives. We care about them and they care about us. It is truly the most beautiful and most surprising gift that podcasting has given us. There are 2 different ways of looking at data. The first is looking at and analyzing downloads, listens, and statistics. The other, and arguably most important way of looking at data is realizing that those numbers represent a person. Just being able to help ONE person makes all the difference and drives this work. Brianne Davis of the Secret Life podcast taught us that in Episode 3 (l isten here ) To listen to the "Why Not a Yeti?" episode click here . It is no secret that David is not a fan of the Yeti... So David, why not the Yeti? The Yeti is a condenser mic. Condenser mics are very sensitive to sound. This is great if you are in a sound-treated room or are recording sounds in nature- not so great if you are in a home studio. Condenser mics, like the Yeti, will pick up all the sounds happening inside and outside your home. You will hear the car driving by, the neighbor playing music, your child getting food out of the fridge, the dog barking, and even your a/c switching on. Unless you have sophisticated editing software, you want to use a mike that won't be as sensitive to room noises. A dynamic cardioid mic is perfect for the home podcaster. A dynamic cardioid mic will only pick up your voice and will reject noises outside the cardioid pattern. If you would like help finding a mic that is right for you- please contact us! Welcome to our podcast! We are so excited to have you here. Tiphany Kane & David Sais are co-hosts. David is a sound engineer with over 2 decades of experience with dialogue editing. He is also an avid collector of microphones. Can you guess how many mics are on our podcast cover? Tiphany is the host of the podcast, Love & Life After Divorce. She is also a podcast host, public speaker, writer, and professional development expert. Launching Love & Life opened so many doors for us. One of those doors was a podcast coaching business and media management business, KaSa Media Productions. As we began coaching people to launch their podcast, we realized that mindset was the biggest barrier to launching, growing, and monetizing their podcasts. This realizations inspired us to start this podcast. We take the "complicated" parts of podcasting and turn them into simple, actionable steps- and we have fun doing it! Listening to this podcast will help you to learn and grow in your skill as a storyteller, editor, content creator, interviewer, and podcast business person.
