In this week's episode, we’re exploring the difference between being alone and feeling lonely. We all know what it’s like to be alone sometimes, whether it’s spending a quiet evening in, taking a solo trip, or simply having some time to ourselves. But what happens when being alone turns into feeling lonely? And what’s the difference, exactly? That’s what we’re going to explore in this episode. We’ll unpack the psychology behind these two concepts, how they affect us mentally and emotionally, and how we can navigate the complex dance between solitude and isolation. This week, I'm exploring a fascinating and therapeutic practice that has been around for centuries but is gaining a lot of attention in today’s world: Bibliotherapy . If you’ve ever lost yourself in a good book, you may have already experienced the healing power of reading. But bibliotherapy is more than just reading for pleasure—it’s using books and literature as a tool for emotional and psychological healing. Today, we’re going to break down what bibliotherapy is, how it works, and how you can use it in your own life to improve your mental health and well-being. Whether you’re dealing with stress, anxiety, grief, or just looking to gain more insight into yourself, there’s a book for that. We’re not talking about gimmicky self-help books that are over-advertised in the mainstream media; we’re talking about reading with intention here. Not just reading what everyone else is reading for the sake of having read it. While self-help books and bibliotherapy both involve using reading as a tool for personal growth and emotional healing, they differ in their approach and context. So let’s do a little compare and contrast for clarity. You’ve probably heard the phrase before, but what does it really mean? And how can we stop this psychological phenomenon from taking control of our lives? Well, in today's episode, we’re going to break it all down: how self-fulfilling prophecies work, the ways they influence our decisions, and most importantly, how we can shift our mindset to stop reinforcing negative patterns. This week I'm discussing the importance of teaching people how to regulate their emotions. Emotional regulation is not just vital for personal well-being, but it’s also one of the most effective ways to prevent crime, reduce addiction, and foster a world where we can disagree without losing respect for one another. This episode will dive into the importance of emotional regulation, backed by research from positive psychology, and explore how learning to manage our emotions can help create a safer, healthier, and more compassionate society. In this week’s episode, we’re diving into what some may call a fascinating cultural moment : the lyric, "I can buy myself flowers." This phrase, is, of course, from Miley Cyrus's 2023 hit song Flowers. We’ll discuss its underlying message, and how this quote still sparks deeper conversations about independence, self-worth, and the evolving nature of relationships in 2025. We’ll also explore why more people choose tobe single, and what psychology can tell us about the rise of self-love in an increasingly individualistic world. In this week's episode, we'll explore the psychological significance of Michelle Schaper's simple, yet profound quote: "Please don't buy me flowers. Take me to where they are growing." At first glance, this may seem like a romantic, poetic sentiment. But beyond the surface, this quote invites us to explore a range of psychological and emotional concepts: connection to nature, the desire for experiences over material goods, and the deeper longing for authenticity and presence in our relationships. We'll break it down and unpack why this quote resonates so deeply. In today’s episode, we’re exploring a fascinating concept that impacts everything from group projects to team sports to your workplace: social loafing and public recognition. Now, I know many of you have been there. You’re part of a group, and while some of your teammates are giving it their all, others are, well… not. Maybe they’re contributing less than expected, or perhaps they’re outright slacking off. You might have even found yourself in that position. But why does this happen? Why is it that when we’re part of a group, we sometimes put in less effort than when we’re working solo? Today, we’ll uncover the psychological science behind social loafing, explore real-world examples, and talk about the factors that can either amplify or reduce this phenomenon. By the end of the episode, you’ll have a deeper understanding of why social loafing occurs and what you can do to prevent it. We will also delve into the drawbacks of public recognition, particularly how it can sometimes backfire, and what we can do as leaders, managers, and teammates, to encourage collaboration without enabling slacking off. Whether you’re currently in a relationship, thinking about what you want in one, or reflecting on past ones, understanding emotional maturity is a crucial piece of the puzzle. Emotional maturity isn't something you're born with—it’s developed over time, shaped by life experiences, self-reflection, and the ability to navigate the complexities of human emotions in a healthy way. At first glance, altruism, acting out of concern for the well-being of others, sounds like a virtuous, selfless pursuit. But what happens when that desire to help goes too far? What happens when it becomes unhealthy, harmful, or even counterproductive? We’ve all heard about people who “burn out” from too much giving or who become entangled in toxic relationships that look like charity but are deeply exploitative. Today, we’ll unpack toxic altruism, how it manifests in various aspects of life, and what we can do to strike a healthier balance between helping others and taking care of ourselves. And how can we understand the unique psychological dynamics of January to make the most of this so-called fresh start? In this episode, I will be exploring something that’s deeply embedded in our culture and emotions: Christmas. It’s a holiday filled with joy, nostalgia, stress, and, depending on how you celebrate, quite a lot of complexity. But what’s really happening in our minds during this season? In this episode, I'm going to look at the psychology of Christmas, examining everything from the feelings of happiness and togetherness that many associate with the season to the stress and pressure that can sometimes sneak in. I’ll also talk about the role of traditions, consumerism, and even some surprising scientific findings about how Christmas affects our brains. This week, I'm digging into a fascinating and often misunderstood aspect of our lives: the push for perceived achievement. This brings about many questions: How do we measure success? Why are we driven to achieve certain things, and what role does perception—our internal or external view of achievement—play in that drive, especially when the recognition of that achievement might not be as tangible as we think? I’ll discuss the concepts of social comparison, intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation, the role of self-worth, and how the illusion of success can sometimes drive us harder than any concrete goal. This week I’m diving into a topic that can feel like walking a tightrope: the psychology of being friends with a cheater. Don’t skip this episode just yet. You may be surprised by what’s to come. Whether you’ve experienced this situation yourself or just trying to understand the dynamics, it can be a confusing and emotionally charged experience. We won’t engage in shaming but rather get a little perspective. So if you’ve been the cheater, been cheated on, the friend of a cheater, or perhaps all of the above, you may learn something new in this week’s episode. As we know, friendship is built on a foundation of trust, and when that trust is compromised or betrayed, especially by someone close to you, someone you’ve known for years who you thought you understood inside and out and vice versa, it can stir up all kinds of emotions. We’ll explore why people cheat, how friendships are affected, and how to navigate these tricky waters with empathy and boundaries. In this episode, I will dive into the minds of people in the workplace, explore the hidden dynamics that shape our professional lives, and tackle a fascinating and somewhat quirky topic: the psychology behind co-workers who try to relive their high school days. It’s something many of us have seen — those colleagues who seem to get stuck in their adolescent years, often bringing high school-style drama, cliques, and even social hierarchies into the workplace. But why does this happen? What’s going on beneath the surface? Kind reminder: positive psychology is the study of human strengths and flourishing, whereas toxic positivity is the belief that people should maintain a positive mindset no matter how bad, sad, or challenging a situation is. Toxic positivity is a red flag. In this episode, I will be talking about the psychology of transitions. We are about to start summer and things are about to change, which often goes overlooked. We rush into this new season trying to do all the summer things, and travel, and get the kids to camps, which are now outrageously overpriced, and see family, and all this rush, rush, rush which never seems to end. There are many nuances that come with change as well as the distinction between change and the psychology of transition and why it matters. The psychology of transition applies to the human side of things in a variety of contexts, including organizations, schools, personally, or even the beginning or ending of relationships, friendships, and so on. In this episode, I will be talking about the three kinds of love you will experience throughout your life, self-positivity bias, and self-love vs. narcissism. If you’re interested, social media links, my website, and other information can be found at thelemontreecoaching.com . You can also click the link in the podcast bio. If you’d like some daily inspiration, you can follow me on Instagram @thelemontreecoaching. I post quotes and make book recommendations from time to time. Currently in my reading stack this week, only to name a couple, I have Glass Hearts & Broken Promises by Kayla McCullough which is a book of poetry that I highly recommend. Be sure to read the introduction. McCullough introduces herself and there are many lessons and insights just within her introduction. What I’ve read so far, certainly coincides with this week’s topic on three kinds of love in your life. Another in my stack this week, or one I’m reading in my classroom during silent reading after I take attendance, get my students situated, handle the tardies, and all the other teacher the things that pop up, is The Will to Meaning: Foundations and Applications of Logotherapy by Viktor E. Frankl. He is also the author of Man’s Search for Meaning which I highly recommend. A quick note if you do silent reading in the classroom, I currently do it for fifteen minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with corresponding weekly assignments, but a key element to making it successful is to also model the behavior for students and not use it as a time to catch up on grading, emails, or be on your phone. I’ve witnessed these behaviors throughout the last 24 years of my career and it doesn’t really resonate with students. Also, if students see you reading, I’ve learned that they often take note of what you are reading and how many books they see you read. It’s really cute and may provoke some interesting conversations. Of course, doing silent reading in the classroom will always be a work in progress and never perfect. You just have to figure out what works best for you and your students. Teachers, you may want to check out my TPT shop called The Lemon Tree by AKS .
