It’s been a crazy start to the year, with a lot of big changes and challenges. One of the hardest things I’ve gone through recently is losing my dad. He passed away from lung cancer in early December 2024 after a long battle. Even though it was a peaceful passing, it’s still been really tough on the family. This winter has been relentless. We’ve had a ridiculous amount of snow since Thanksgiving, and I’ve spent a lot of time plowing. Now, don’t get me wrong—I actually enjoy plowing snow—but after doing it over and over, it started to wear me down. One silver lining is that I inherited my dad’s 2020 Toyota Tundra. It’s been a solid truck and has come in handy more times than I can count. On a much sadder note, we had a rough time with our beagles, Benny and Percy. Percy started getting aggressive, and on Christmas, he attacked Benny badly. After multiple incidents, including one where Benny needed stitches at the emergency vet, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to put Percy down. It was incredibly difficult, but it had to be done for Benny’s safety. Thankfully, the weather is starting to warm up a bit, and the snow is finally beginning to melt. I had to put my flying on hold for a while because of all the stress, but I’m hoping to get back in the air this spring. Around the house, I’ve been working on a few projects—running conduit for internet and electrical lines. Unfortunately, I had a storage tent collapse under the weight of all that snow. That thing is a total loss, so I’m making plans to build something more permanent to store my yard equipment. Before wrapping up, I just want to remind everyone to stay subscribed and check out my website for updates. I also post daily facts on social media if you’re into that sort of thing. And who knows—maybe in a future episode, I’ll even talk about politics. (Or maybe not!) Thanks for sticking with me, and I’ll catch you in the next one!

The Word Podcast was coined just over 20 years ago, and in April 2025 it will be the 20th anniversary of my first podcast episode. I really wish I could find that file. They say once something is on the internet, it is there forever. Well, not in the case of my first 35 episodes. 🙁 I’ve looked high and low and even on the wayback machine. I can’t find it. Benzoid Report #001. I will offer a bounty for anyone that can find it and send it to me. As you might know already, this podcast was called the Benzoid Report for the first few years. Also, the 400 is just the episodes that I numbered. I had a lot of other mini episodes, and experimental episodes the the number is likely 500 or so. But for this purpose, 400 works! !function(r,u,m,b,l,e){r._Rumble=b,r[b]||(r[b]=function(){(r[b]._=r[b]._||[]).push(arguments);if(r[b]._.length==1){l=u.createElement(m),e=u.getElementsByTagName(m)[0],l.async=1,l.src="https://rumble.com/embedJS/uodt1p"+(arguments[1].video?'.'+arguments[1].video:'')+"/?url="+encodeURIComponent(location.href)+"&args="+encodeURIComponent(JSON.stringify([].slice.apply(arguments))),e.parentNode.insertBefore(l,e)}})}(window, document, "script", "Rumble"); Rumble("play", {"video":"v5ejscl","div":"rumble_v5ejscl","startTime":29}); AI Shownotes: In this special 400th episode of “Mike Dell’s World,” host Mike Dell celebrates his podcasting journey and reflects on the evolution of his show and the medium. Recorded on the day before International Podcast Day, Mike reminisces about starting his podcast back in April 2005, initially under the name “The Benzoid Report,” which was later changed to “Mike Dell’s World” in 2008. Mike shares his early fascination with talk radio which later transitioned into exploring podcasts as a new form of broadcasting. He recounts the technical challenges of the early days, like hand-rolling RSS feeds and filling his iPod with downloaded MP3s for entertainment during night shifts at a printing plant. Mike’s interest was sparked by pioneering podcasters and the desire to create his own show, despite his assertion that it was about ‘nothing in particular.’ Throughout the episode, Mike elaborates on the numerous other podcasts he has started (and sometimes stopped), covering topics from ham radio and strange news to aviation history and fast food. He highlights some enjoyable moments, like podcasting on the go and creating episodes about topics he loves. Mike also discusses his full-time role at Blueberry, grounding his career in the podcasting industry even further. He candidly shares the challenge of maintaining a consistent podcasting schedule and advocates for keeping episodes as long or as short as the content requires, rather than stretching them to fit a time slot. Mike prefers the intimacy of audio podcasts over video, noting the unique one-on-one connection t

World 395 for November 8th 2023 Hello, everyone! Welcome to another episode of Mike Dell’s World, where we explore the fascinating corners of technology and its impact on our daily lives. I’m your host, Mike Dell, and today, we’re delving into the intriguing world of Artificial Intelligence, or AI, and its increasing role in the podcasting universe. Podcasting has always been about the human connection—voices in our ears, telling stories, sharing knowledge, and sparking conversations. But as technology advances, AI is becoming an integral part of this audio experience. It’s transforming how we create, distribute, and even listen to podcasts. So, buckle up as we take a quick dive into this tech evolution! First off, let’s talk about content creation. AI is now assisting podcasters in scripting, with tools that help in writing more engaging and SEO-friendly content. Imagine having an AI co-writer that suggests topics based on trending data or even helps to fine-tune your language for better clarity and impact. Then there’s the production side of things. AI-driven software can now mix and master audio files, balance levels, and even remove background noise, making the editing process faster and more accessible to podcasters of all skill levels. Distribution has seen a revolution too. AI algorithms are the backbone of recommendation engines on podcast platforms, helping listeners find your show among the millions out there. And if you’re worried about discoverability, AI can optimize your podcast metadata to ensure you’re hitting the right keywords and phrases. Now, let’s get into the listening experience. Ever used a smart speaker to play your favorite podcast? That’s AI in action, folks! Voice recognition allows listeners to search and play podcasts effortlessly. And it doesn’t stop there—AI is even enabling real-time translation and transcription, breaking down language barriers and making podcasts accessible to a global audience. But with all these advancements, it’s essential to remember the heart of podcasting—the storytellers, the educators, the entertainers. AI is a powerful tool, but it’s the human touch that truly connects with listeners. As podcasters, we can harness AI to elevate our craft, but let’s not forget the art of storytelling that makes podcasting so special. So, what’s your take on AI in podcasting? Are you excited about these new tools, or do you have concerns about the role of AI in a medium so deeply personal? Drop me a line, and let’s start a conversation. That’s all for today’s episode. Thanks for tuning in to Mike Dell’s World. Be sure to subscribe for more discussions on technology, life, and the space in between. Until next time, keep on casting! As you can tell, this is an AI version of my voice. I will be back in person tomorrow with another episode for Na Pod Po Mo.

Dealing with heavy snowfall during the winter months is a way of life for the residents of Northern Michigan. With an average snowfall that can exceed 100 inches in some areas, the communities have adapted in unique and effective ways. Preparation for the snow season begins early. Residents ensure their homes are well-insulated, with sufficient heating systems to withstand the biting cold. Snow tires and chains become standard for vehicles as locals aim to maintain mobility in slippery conditions. Additionally, there’s a significant investment in snowblowers and plows for personal use. The local governments also play a crucial role. Budgets for winter are carefully planned to ensure that snowplows are in good condition and ready to clear the streets. There’s a remarkable efficiency in the deployment of these services, often working throughout the night during heavy snowfall to minimize disruption to daily life. Community spirit shines through during the winter months. Neighbors often help each other, especially in assisting those who are elderly or disabled with snow removal. This camaraderie extends to sharing resources like food and water during particularly severe storms that may lead to temporary isolation. Education on dealing with winter conditions is also a key factor. Schools teach children about frostbite and hypothermia prevention, while local organizations provide winter survival tips. There are also community-led initiatives to ensure everyone has adequate clothing, such as coat drives. Despite the challenges, the residents of Northern Michigan embrace the winter season with a sense of pride and enjoyment. Winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, and ice fishing are not just recreational activities but also a part of the cultural identity of the region. In summary, Northern Michigan’s approach to managing snowfall is a blend of preparation, community support, and embracing the harsh yet beautiful winter environment. This resilience allows the region to not only endure but also thrive during the snowy months.

I just got off a live stream / Podcast episode of Podcasting 2.0 with Adam Curry, Dave Jones and Todd Cochrane (see: https://podcastindex.org/podcast/920666 episode 153 ) Had a great time with the guys talking about podcasting and some sexy namespace talk. It's a tad geeky, but very cool. I want to talk to you about your listening app. What do you use to listen to podcasts? One of the "Legacy apps" or a new modern podcast app? For a new app to try, check out https://podcastindex.org/apps?appTypes=app Join me on one of those apps, and setup V4V and look for live streaming alerts for live shows you may like. I just discovered "Podcast Guru" ( https://podcastguru.io/ ) and have it setup just a bit. It seems impressive! Listen to this episode and then go listen to Podcasting 2.0 ep 153.

Full Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) each have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages. Full Electric Vehicle (EV) Pros: 1. "Zero Emissions" - Full EVs produce no tailpipe emissions, making them environmentally friendly. 2 Lower Operating Costs - Electricity is generally cheaper than gasoline, and EVs typically have fewer moving parts than traditional vehicles, resulting in potentially lower maintenance costs. 3. Quiet Operation - EVs are generally quieter than vehicles with internal combustion engines. 4. Instant Torque - Electric motors provide instant torque, which can lead to quick acceleration. 5. Incentives - Many governments offer tax breaks, rebates, and other incentives for purchasing EVs. 6. Reduced Dependence on Oil - Using EVs can reduce a country's dependence on imported oil. Cons: 1. Limited Range -Some EVs have a limited driving range compared to gasoline-powered vehicles, although this is improving with advancements in battery technology. 2. Longer Refueling Time - Charging an EV can take longer than filling up a gas tank. 3. Charging Infrastructure - While growing, the EV charging infrastructure is not as widespread as gasoline stations in many areas. 4. Higher Upfront Cost - Although prices are coming down, EVs can have a higher initial purchase price than traditional vehicles. 5. Battery Degradation - Over time, the capacity of the battery can decrease, reducing the vehicle's range. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Pros: 1. Flexibility - PHEVs can run on electricity for short trips and switch to gasoline for longer ones, providing the best of both worlds. 2. Reduced Emissions - While not zero-emission when using gasoline, PHEVs generally emit less than traditional vehicles. 3. Incentives - Like EVs, many governments offer incentives for purchasing PHEVs. 4. Less Range Anxiety - The gasoline engine can act as a backup when the battery is depleted. 5. Charging Infrastructure - While beneficial for PHEVs, it's not as crucial since they can also run on gasoline. Cons: 1. Still Uses Gasoline - PHEVs still rely on gasoline for longer trips, so they aren't entirely free from fossil fuels. 2. Complexity - Having both an electric motor and a gasoline engine can lead to more complex maintenance and potential repairs. 3. Higher Upfront Cost - PHEVs can be more expensive than traditional vehicles and sometimes even more than full EVs due to the dual systems. 4. Limited Electric Range - The electric-only range of PHEVs is typically shorter than that of full EVs. 5. Weight - The combination of a gasoline engine, electric motor, and battery can make PHEVs heavier than traditional vehicles or full EVs. In summary, the choice between a full EV and a PHEV depends on individual needs, driving habits, and priorities. Both options contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, but they come with different considerations.

Hello, everyone! It feels like ages since we last caught up. My summer and fall have been quite eventful, to say the least. Flight Adventures: I embarked on an exhilarating flight training journey at the renowned Giving Wings Flight Center in Traverse City. However, life threw a curveball, and I need to undergo rotator cuff surgery this week. This means a short break from my flying lessons. On the bright side, my recovery will give me a reprieve from snowblowing duties this winter! Home Renovations: On the home front, we've taken on some significant projects. The old woodshed behind our garage, which was on its last legs, has been removed. In its stead, we've erected a functional carport-style tent. It's the perfect storage space for our summer essentials, freeing up the garage to serve its primary purpose once again. Podcast News: Exciting times ahead as I've committed to NaPodPoMo (National Podcast Posting Month) this year! I'm eager to dive into podcasting throughout November, sharing intriguing episodes with all of you. There's a plethora of ideas I've been toying with, and now's the perfect time to bring them to life. Stay tuned and thanks for being on this journey with me!

When is it time to get rid of the old car? I have 2 of them that I really shouldn't put any money into. BUT, they are not THAT broken. First on the list is my Loser Cruiser My 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan that has a 1/4 million miles on it. It just keeps going and going and going. Right now its leaking power steering fluid. If its the Pump, then it *might* be time to junk it. The other one is a 2006 Subaru Forester that I already totaled once, bought it back, traded it for a pickup truck, traded back for it just recently. It has numerous issues. But nothing too expensive, just a Pain in the butt. My nephew just junked my old 93 F-150 that I sold him 8 years ago. The frame broke. It was time.

Click on image for more info Did this sort of live via Zoom. Had Shawn Thorpe ( shawn.mx ) drop by and we had a great talk about the issues with the current situation with Trucker, Restaurants and the Airlines among other things. We also talked about eSports and the fact that NASCAR is doing eNASCAR this week on FS1 network TV. They are running a virtual race on the track they would have been on this weekend using iRace (whatever that is) Should be fun seeing the normal broadcasters doing a video game race as if it was a real one. I'm thinking of doing a virtual Happy Hour thing a few times. Stay tuned to my Facebook for into on how to join in ( facebook.com/mgdell )

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn A bit more of a health focus in our household. Kathy and I are doing “intermittent fasting” I need to get some weight back off. I lost 30 pounds last year and put 15 back on. Doing some more walking, biking and general activity. I quit drinking coffee (for now). Planning on doing some YouTube lIve or Facebook Live videos. Not sure yet which one or when. More to come. Getting my mobile podcasting setup tweaked. Got a Lav mic I can use while walking. Have the portable setup going as well for hotel room/travel episodes. Also, I CAN podcast from my phone with reduced audio quality. I remember back when podcasting started, there was a thing called a “Sound seeing tour”. That was a lot of fun for me to listen to others do it and I am guessing it might still be fun to listen to. Bring back some of the indie podcaster type stuff that used to happen a lot in podcasting. Podcasting is becoming more main-stream, but there is no reason we can’t enjoy making and listening to some old-school podcast episodes. I plan on doing that a bit. Check out my recording with Kate from Blubrry Pro Productions. We had a blast! Click here

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Quick phone update. Hope the sound doesn’t suck too badly
Sun, February 09, 2020
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Update from an easy chair in a snow storm in Northern Michigan. Simplifying things that have become a personal pain the ass has been a good thing over the last few months. I’ve cut down the podcasting hobby to this show (Mike Dell’s World), Podcast Insider and Traverse City Weather. Podcast Help Desk will remain online and I *may* add episodes once in a while. I’ve cut down obligations in Ham Radio. No longer am I the District EC for the 7th district of Michigan. We cut the cable several months ago and went back to an Antenna for TV. Simplifying my diet. Other ways to just keep things as simple as possible.

I talked about a few links: ByMeACoffee.com/mikedell OmeletteRadio.com Traverse City Weather (Alexa News Brief Skill and Daily Podcast) PodcastHelpDesk.com I got a new Van. A 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. I've been driving UBER XL with the new van the last couple of weekends.
Wed, July 03, 2019
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Just an update about my cable cutting project. I found an amplifier that I got a long time ago when I *thought* we were going to cut the cable. It allows me to power 2 TV's with the same antenna setup. I wired that up tonight and we get everything available over the air up here now. Kind of proud of myself Also, as you might have noticed, I've been playing with some ad insertion tech from the company I work for. You may hear some “injected” audio (ads) in this show at least up to 7-19-19 After that, who knows what you might hear in those spots I will have Barry Kantz on “Your Podcast” over at blubrry on Monday. Take a listen over at PowerPressPodcast.com. Happy 4th of July to those in the US and Happy Canada Day (yesterday) as well!

Wed, June 12, 2019
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn It's been very rainy here in Traverse City lately. Lake Michigan is at a high water level which makes my basement into a bit of a swamp. It's a cycle and it will go back down I'm sure. Lets hope for a hot and dry summer up here!
Mon, May 20, 2019
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn This needs to be said again.
Tue, May 14, 2019
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Should I buy a NEW car or an old truck? Old trucks (and cars) are simple, analog, easy to work on and troubleshoot. New cars are full of crap like “Body Control Modules” and “Anti-lock brake controllers” Shit that cost a ton of money to do something that is mostly un-needed. I'm toying with the idea of getting a Classic daily-driver from the 60's or 70's. For the most part, I don't drive a lot. If I buy an old truck, in 10 years, I will still have an “old truck”. Might even be worth more than I pay for it or not, but it won't be 10's of thousands of dollars less because it's a new-fangled car that looses money by the second.
Thu, March 21, 2019
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn A short update on traveling and the spring thaw around here. Stay tuned to the end to hear how the Bearded Lady Died (Andre Villoch)

Sat, January 26, 2019
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Recorded in Columbus Ohio after an Adventure in Flying in the winter. I spent 24+ hours at Detroit airport due to weather. It was an experiment in flying to the office in Columbus instead of driving. Result: Driving 6.5 hours. Flying 28 hours. PLUS if the weather sucks while driving I can always pull over. OR not go. Flying, you are kind of stuck. The lesson, DRIVE. Posting this just before heading to the airport to head home. Hopefully, I will get home more or less on time.
Mon, January 14, 2019
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Recording from the road. I talk about the loss of a spouse which has happened to a few of my friends lately. I took Percy (the Beagle) down to Big Rapids for a home visit of a perspective beagle adopter for the MidWest Brew ( gotbeagles.org ) rescue. I talk about my car search. Getting ready to buy a new (to me) truck of some sort. No hurry, but soon.
Sun, December 30, 2018

Fri, November 30, 2018
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn I had a bit of nostalgia today driving around town in Traverse City and the Cherryland Mall (now called Cherryland Center and nearly empty). It's amazing the things you remember about things so long ago. Also, I talk about some nostalgia about podcasting. When it was a hobby and a form of therapy for a lot of people. I'm sure it still is for some, but sometimes I see the all the business end of it.
Thu, September 13, 2018
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Fall is in the air around Traverse City these days, but the trees are not turning color just yet. Looking forward to being done with house projects and getting settled in for winter. 2:23 A random place in my show Check out my episode with Evo Terra on Podcast Help Desk this week. (episode 110)

Just remember, no matter what other place I am at, I'm always going to be right here on MikeDell.com Also, Do you know of any other “Personal Journal” type podcasts like this one? I used to listen to a lot of them, but I sort of think this may be a dying art form. Let me know mike@mikedell.com Recording today was done with a Logitech Headset mic I got while I was in Ohio. It's not the best, but I'm sure not the worst way to record a podcast
Fri, March 02, 2018
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn I've been addicted Tobacco in various forms for the last (wow! long time) years… I am finally going tobacco free totally starting in a few days. Wish me luck! I'm having some dental work done and after my appointment on Tuesday, I am going to quit all together. Along with losing weight it's going to be hard, but I think it's time! Again, wish me luck! If you have any ideas on how to make it less difficult, please let me know. mike@mikedell.com or on Facebook or Twitter.
Sat, January 13, 2018
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Had my own personal tech bubble burst. Ended up with a new iPhone 8+, A new Router (the old one was 11 years old!) and just now found out my compressor/Limiter/Gate is 1/2 dead. Oh well. I moved the studio back down to the Office in the basement and recorded this using the PR40 mic instead of the headset I've been using for a while. Let me know what you think of the sound.
Fri, January 05, 2018
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Well, I made it! 300 episodes. I was a bit under the weather so I didn't do the episode on New Years. I was sleeping trying to get rid of a cold or blowing and shoveling snow. I'm not going to write a lot of show notes for this one. Just listen to it for a few surprises. Here is to another 300!

Thu, December 28, 2017
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Almost sounds like I'm phoning it in. This short episode is from my Airpods as the Microphone on my Mac. Don't think I will use them for producing podcasts, but they are great at listening to podcasts.
Wed, December 27, 2017
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn The weather is BRUTAL here… Was 5 degrees and windy on Christmas and yesterday. It's up to a whopping 11 degrees (F) and sunny today. Heat wave.
Thu, December 21, 2017
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn From a hotel room in Dublin Ohio, where I'm down here showing my face at the Blubrry offices, I just ramble a bit about this and that. Nothing to write home about but it was fun to setup the mobile gear in the hotel room anyway.

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn I talk a little too much about mailboxes and snow Just an update on the way to 300 episodes.

Thu, December 07, 2017
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Just read about a 25 year old that was killed in his driveway because someone went off the road an hit him. Slow down people! Winter is the time to relax, take it slow, read a book and above all, don't get in a hurry on the roads. You, and those around you, will live to tell about it. We had some snow in the area and I played my traditional snow song for the first real snow in Traverse City this season.
Tue, December 05, 2017
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn As I recorded this at 10:20pm, it is 55-ish degrees outside. Very warm for this time of year this far north. I was able to do my leaf blowing yesterday and I should have been blowing snow. I'm not complaining, just saying … Going for 300 in 2017 so stay tuned for more episodes this month! Facebook Twitter LinkedIn I heard from a podcast pioneer yesterday and he even sent me some voiceovers. Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff, who used to do Pacific Coast Hellway Podcast back in the day and was the head of Podshow LA along with 1000 other things. It was very cool to hear from him and he is thinking about podcasting again. No details and he's not sure yet, but I will be working on him! You can see all of Mark's books here: https://www.amazon.com/Mark-Yoshimoto-Nemcoff/e/B004QZM0FS and likely hear him doing voiceovers on commerials and promos on Radio and TV. #NaPodPoMo #25 for 2017 Checkout National Podcast Posting Month here: http://napodpomo.org

Sat, November 18, 2017
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn I'm getting ready for the winter by finishing the motorhome winterization, parking it out of the way and getting my snowblower (and ice auger) running and serviced up. Also, I have 4 OSU vs. U of M tickets for sale. (Check them out here: https://nmi.craigslist.org/tix/d/michigan-vs-ohio-state/6389168445.html if you are interested. I don't want to have to go to the game. My easy chair is a much better view of the game but if you have never been to the Big House, it's worth doing it! I also rant about the local TV stations.
Fri, November 17, 2017
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn The first episode of Fast Food History is out. Check it out over at FastFoodHistory.org. This was the idea I had 2 weeks ago that nobody talked me out of. Of course, this is my 17th entry in the 2017 NaPodPoMo for November 17th 2017.

I talk about my way of buying and owning cars which is a bit different then the normal I suppose. This episode is both Episode 61 of Geek of the North and Episode 254 of Mike Dell's World Podcast.

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn – Why would it be important to have the engine size or the type of transmission or whatever on your vehicle's outside? For that matter, other than pimping the auto manufacturer why would you even want their logo on your car? – Left Lane driving on the freeway. My take on it. – Why is it when people sports teams when they say “we won!”? Wouldn't be that “They” won? The Team in question. YOU just watched them win. Republicans and Democrats are like sports teams to people. They root for the Dems or the GOP and no matter what they do or say, it's ok with them. Instead of thinking about the issue at hand, they just blindly follow. Also, it seems if anyone says anything bad about the other side, it's believed when it's likely not true. – Why does the USAF want to get rid of the A-10 ? If I were in charge of the military, I would change things up a LOT!

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Some good news, some bad news (very bad news) in this episode. Life is getting back to “normal” but it's been a rough few weeks when it comes to dogs. We lost our 4 year old beagle Banjo to an injury that couldn't be fixed. Then we got a new Puppy (Benny) who is a handful but very cool. I will be presenting at the Podcast Awards on Sunday June 26th at 8pm. If you want to watch live, it will be at PodcastAwards.com The Traverse City podcast lives again. Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Tonight I talk about the wreck of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald Timeline: NOVEMBER 9 8:30 AM The Edmund Fitzgerald is loaded with taconite pellets at Burlington Northern Railroad, Dock 1. Superior, Wisconsin The ship is scheduled to transport the cargo to Zug Island on the Detroit River. 2:20 PM The Fitzgerald departs Lake Superior en route of Detroit with 26,116 tons of taconite pellets. 2:39 PM The National Weather Service issues gale warnings for the area which the Fitzgerald is sailing in. Captain Cooper on the Anderson radios a freighter (the Edmund Fitzgerald) that he spots. 4:15 PM The Fitzgerald spots the Arthur M. Anderson some 15 miles behind it. NOVEMBER 10 1:00 AM Weather report from the Fitzgerald. The report from the Fitzgerald shows her to be 20 miles south of Isle Royale. Winds are at 52 knots, with waves ten feet in height. 7:00 AM Weather report from the Fitzgerald. Winds are at 35 knots, waves of ten feet. This is the last weather report that the Edmund Fitzgerald will ever make. 3:15 PM Captain Jesse Cooper, (J.C.) of the S.S. Arthur M. Anderson watches the Fitzgerald round Caribou Island and comments that the Fitzgerald is much closer to Six Fathom Shoal than he would want to be. 3:20 PM Anderson reports winds coming from the Northwest at 43 knots. 3:30 PM Radio transmission between the Fitzgerald and the Anderson Captain McSorley (C.M.) to Captain Cooper (C.C.): C.M.: “Anderson, this is the Fitzgerald. I have sustained some topside damage. I have a fence rail laid down, two vents lost or damaged, and a list. I'm checking down. Will you stay by me til I get to Whitefish?” C.C.: “Charlie on that Fitzgerald. Do you have your pumps going?” C.M.: “Yes, both of them 4:10 PM The Fitzgerald radios the Arthur M. Anderson requesting radar assistance for the remainder of the voyage. Fitzgerald: “Anderson, this is the Fitzgerald. I have lost both radars. Can you provide me with radar plots till we reach Whitefish Bay?” Anderson: “Charlie on that, Fitzgerald. We'll keep you advised of position.” About 4:39 PM The Fitzgerald cannot pick up the Whitefish Point radio beacon. The Fitzgerald radios the Coast Guard station at Grand Marais on Channel 16, the emergency channel. Between 4:30 and 5:00 PM The Edmund Fitzgerald calls for any vessel in the Whitefish Point area regarding information about the beacon and light at Whitefish Point. They receive an answer by the saltwater vessel Avafors that the beacon and the light are not operating. Estimated between 5:30 and 6:00 PM Radio transmission between the Avafors and the Fitzgerald. Avafors: “Fitzgerald, this is the Avafors. I have the Whitefish light now but still am receiving no beacon. Over.” Fitzgerald: “I'm very glad to hear it.” Avafors: “The wind is really howling down here. What are the conditions where you are?” Fitzgerald: (Undiscernable shouts heard by the Avafors.) “DON'T LET NOBODY ON DECK!” Avafors: “What's that, Fitzgerald? Unclear. Over.” Fitzgerald:

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn I played a recording of the Ann Arbor Children's House school kids and teachers signing the Mackinac Bridge Song (which was taught to all us kids back in the day) The Mackinac Bridge Song Chorus: Oh the Mackinac Bridge (oh the Mackinac Bridge) She’s a mighty fine bridge ( she’s a mighty fine bridge) Five hundred feet high (five hundred feet high) and five miles long (and five miles long) Verse 1- In the straits of Mackinac there’s about as much water as you ever saw and the folks who lived there tried and tried but the couldn’t get across to the other side, couldn’t get across without a boat or a plane couldn’t get across without out a trolley or a train couldn’t swim across it was as cold as a fridge! So they thought they better build themselves a bridge. Verse 2- So in nineteen hundred fifty-four they started linking shore to shore from Mackinaw city to St. Ignace town, and the men on the top didn’t dare look down! In fifty-seven the work was through, and there she was all shiny and new so they had a big party and they called out loud “She’s the Mackinac Bridge and we are proud!” Chorus For those who want to read about the bridge, here is link to the book of knowledge https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackinac_Bridge

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Yup, you read that right, Mike Dell's World is back. Kind of like the nightmare season on Dallas (the 70's TV show) where they killed off Bobby. Then a year later, they made it into a dream sequence so they bring him back. I'm doing the same thing with “Mike Dell's Audio blog”. I'm killing it off and replacing it with Mike Dell's World. When I stopped doing MDW, the last show as #190. I have done 10 Audio blog episodes so the last one I did in October 2012 was 200. Today's episode is 201. Thanks for listening! -Mike *** No podcasts, or podcasters were harmed in the making of this episode.

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Warning, Politics talk! Am I the only one that is for Gun Rights and Gay Marriage? In other words, I'm for freedom to do what you want as long as it doesn't effect me and I don't have to pay for it. I go on a bit of a rant about our political system in the USA. It's a bit screwed up, but it is better then any other system ever tried. So lets stick with it. Catch me Later! -Mike
Fri, May 11, 2012
Facebook Twitter LinkedIn I talk about my decision to go for contact lenses. I've worn glasses most of my life and for the last couple of years, I've worn bifocals and had a separate pair of “computer” glasses, prescription sun glasses and even a pair of cheaters (the reading glasses you get at drug stores). When I was in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago, I forgot my glasses case in the car I was driving. Instead of buying 2 new pairs of glasses, I will go for contacts. I'm thinking with contacts I should be able to get away with just a set of weak cheaters (maybe) for reading small type and then I can wear some cool “normal” sunglasses. I guess I will see if I am able to stick my finger in my eye -Mike

Something where I didn't have rules, I didn't have a schedule and didn't have advertisers. Just plain old podcasting. Hopefully you will get something out of listening to me rant once in a while. You can subscribe in iTunes (or whatever podcatcher) by using this RSS feed address: http://mikedell.com/feed/mike/ It's not the same as any of my other feeds. Starting back at ground zero. *** Even if you do subscribe, please check back to mikedell.com for Audio Boos, Youtube Videos and whatever else *** Catch me later! -Mike

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Today I talk about the blog post over at Mike Dell's World where I wonder if the word “Podcast” has run is course. I have re-branded this show as an “online radio show” and I am a Broadcaster because of it. Read the post and listen to the show to hear more. I had breakfast this morning with Keven Reeves and a bunch of other geeks at the Traverse City Geek Breakfast. It was a great time! I played some of Kevin's old music (from 2005 and 2006) in this show. Wasted, Shine and Throw Me A line all from Music Alley and available other places I'm sure. Kevin just put out a new Album (if people still use that term) with his group “Crater Maker” which you can find at Amazon: amzn.to/zpRBbs and CD Baby: bit.ly/zBrfI6. Kevin is working on another album of his own music (pop/rock) that should be out sometime this year. He's also playing some local gigs. I need to get out and see him live again! Catch me LATER! -Mike

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Today's show is going out on all the audio feeds. It's sort of an announcement. After 18 years of employment with a company, I have become self-employed. It's going to take me a month or so to get ramped up and ready for a full load of business but I've never felt more ready then I do right now. 2 days ago, I didn't think I was ready but the hand of God slapped me up side the head and said ” Dummy, you are going the wrong way. Here, go this way” Anyway, Catch me later! -Mike

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Thanks for downloading this episode of Mike Dell's World. We play a song by Chad Hollister which is a cover of “Best Friend's Girlfriend” Been BUSY BUSY BUSY with lots of stuff.. It's not supposed to be that way in winter around here. I talk about the trip to Novi, MI for my Wife's Work. NOVI: The name Novi was taken from the township, which was organized in 1832 from Farmington Township. The name was offered by resident Dr. J. C. Emery, at the suggestion of his wife. Residents were reportedly looking for a shorter name than Farmington. Several popular but historically inaccurate explanations have been given for the origin of the name Novi. One version is that it was named after the 6th tollgate (No. VI) on the Grand River toll road. However, the township was named in 1832 and the toll road was not constructed until the 1850s. A similar claim is made about the township being stop number 6 on the railroad. However, the Holly, Wayne and Monroe Railway (now CSX Transportation) was not constructed through the township until 1870–71, almost 40 years after it was named. A third popular misconception is that Novi was the sixth stagecoach stop outside of Detroit. None of which is really true. I thought it was the interstate Exit WordPress 3.05 WTF? Why does WordPress have to update so often..?? Don't worry, Mike Dell's World (www.mikedell.com) is up to date and safe. I was one of the lucky recipients of a Google Chrome OS – CR 48 Laptop. So far, so good. Even Kathy Likes it! Will have a full review over at GeekoftheNorth.com (audio) and Geeknewscentral.com (text) soon. Check out @podcaster on Twitter, That is the twitter account for podcastfaq.com. It's a great place to learn about podcasting and how to do it the right way. Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Podcast about winter: Also some jokes below for those reading this on the website (I know, oldies… but Goodies!) Are you aware that Jeff Foxworthy is now picking on Michigan ? Read on. If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 18 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in Michigan. If you're proud that your region makes the national news 96 nights each year because Pellston is the coldest spot in the nation, you might live in Michigan . If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through March, you might live in Michigan . If you instinctively walk like a penguin for five months out of the year, you might live in Michigan. If someone in a store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you might live in Michigan. If your dad's suntan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead, you might live in Michigan. If you have worn shorts and a coat at the same time, you might live in Michigan . If your town has an equal number of bars and churches, you might live in Michigan. If you have had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you might live in Michigan. You know you're a true MICHIGANIAN/MICHIGANDER when: 1. “Vacation” means going up north on I-75. 2. You measure distance in hours. 3. You know several people who have hit a deer more than once. 4. You often switch from “heat” to “A/C” in the same day. 5. You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard wthout flinching. 6. You see people wearing camouflage at social events (including weddings). 7. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked. 8. You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how to use them. 9. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit. 10.Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow. 11.You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction. 12.You can identify a southern or eastern accent. 13.Your idea of creative landscaping is a statue of a deer next to your blue spruce. 14.You were unaware that there is a legal drinking age. 15.Down South to you means Ohio. 16. A brat is something you eat. 17.Your neighbor throws a party to celebrate his new pole barn. 18.You go out to fish fry every Friday. 19.Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost. 20.You have more miles on your snow blower than your car. 21.You find 0 degrees “a little chilly”. 22.You drink pop and bake with soda. 23.Your doctor tells you to drink Vernors and you know it's not medicine. 24.You can actually drink Vernors without coughing. 25.You know what a Yooper is. 26.You think owning a Honda is Un-American. 27.You know that UP is a place, not a direc
