Episode 024 is my baby. This episode represents all the trials and tribulations in my life that have led me to where I am now, which is a place of purpose, passion, and expansion. This is every gift I have received and the best lessons I have learned summed up as quickly as I possibly can so that you can take these 4 steps and Ignite the Impact you wish to see in your world.
Let me sum this one up for you in one of my favorite ways - with the quotes that inspired each of this episode's Morning Muscle-Ups:
MMU #1 (4:37) - “What you measure affects what you do. If you don’t measure the right thing, you don’t do the right thing.” - Joseph Stiglitz
Long Story Short - In life, if you are not crystal clear on what success, happiness, and fulfillment look like in EVERY area then you are doomed to live a life of mediocrity.
MMU #2 (13:59) - “Forget about goals. Focus on systems instead. Goals are about the results you want to achieve. Systems are the processes that lead to those results. In order to improve for good, you need to solve problems at the systems level. Fix the inputs and the outputs will fix themselves.” - James Clear, Atomic Habits
Long Story Short - Goal setting is bullshit and is everything wrong with self-help, self-improvement, and personal development. You don't need huge, audacious goals. You need systems that make hitting your targets (not goals) not only possible but inevitable.
MMU #3 (23:30) - “Most of us have two lives. The life we live and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.”
Long Story Short - Even with the best systems in place, life is going to throw you a few curveballs more often than you would like. Knowing how to overcome those obstacles in advance with pre-determined strategies is what makes the system work as smoothly as possible.
MMU #4 (36:28) -“The mere act of tracking a habit can spark the urge to change it.
Habit tracking also keeps you honest. Most of us have a distorted view of our own behavior. We think we act better than we do. Measurement offers one way to overcome our blindness to our own behavior and notice what’s really going on each day. When the evidence is right in front of you, you’re less likely to lie to yourself.” - James Clear, Atomic Habits
Long Story Short - Even with clear targets coupled with the right system and strategies, you'll never know if you're on the right path if you don't track and reflect on where you are compared to where you want to go.
MMU #5 - “Only through our connectedness to others can we really know and enhance the self. And only through working on the self can we begin to enhance our connectedness to others.” - Harriet Lerner
Long Story Short - Self-help is the biggest oxymoron out there next to jumbo shrimp. Those who succeed, succeed with others. Those who fail, fail alone. It's that simple.
COMING SOON! The Self-Help Junkie Journal (Digital version)
Without a doubt, the MMU has been the most impactful tool I have used in my self-help journey. In November of 2022, it will be available for download as a journal so that you can
