In this episode we’re looking at betting shops and the role they play in the wider gambling culture. Ben & Steve let us know if betting shops played a part within their own journeys and we hear from two people who were impacted by betting shops for very different reasons… David lost a large amount in a betting shop and fell into a cycle of robbing them, to claim ‘revenge’ - He ended up serving a 10 year prison sentence as a result of this. Kieron Bryan is an author, entrepreneur and former prisoner. In this episode Jules talks to successful business woman, Tracy Mackness, who’s had a huge transformation from a self-proclaimed ‘Essex Bad Girl’ to a pig farmer. Tracy runs the Giggly Pig Company, and has around 600 pigs, (as well as 18 dogs and 2 chickens!). Tracy first came into contact with pigs when serving a 10 year prison sentence. In part 1 of this interview they talk to Zak and Jules about how their gambling addiction led them to stealing money from their employers and ending up in jail. Almost a quarter of people in prison have reported having a gambling problem. We're back in the studio with two people who have been to prison and are now outside living with a 'life licence', to talk about 'hooks for change' and the what happens as the reality of being a 'lifer' dawns on you. Serena is a researcher and Lecturer in Criminology in the Department of Law and Criminology at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK. Her research on prisons and penology has focused on short-term sentences and post-release ‘frustrated desistance’ among women, and the experience of long-term incarceration among life-sentenced prisoners. Ben is Deputy Director of the Prisons Research Centre at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge. What is it like to receive a life sentence? We're joined by two people who have had this experience - both have been to prison and are now outside living with a 'life licence'. As a young person, Julie Muir struggled with addiction and was often in and out of prison as a result. While she was in for the final time, she met a peer supporter who inspired her to get clean inside, and she hasn’t looked back since. Julie is now Director of Recovery at The Forward Trust, the same organisation that helped her when she was inside. Here she shares her story of what it’s like to have a young son while in prison, how she chooses recovery each day, and her aspirations for the future. Tracey started out playing online bingo and ended up stealing over one million pounds from her employer to fund a gambling addiction. Here, she tells Zak and Jules about what led to her confession, what experiencing prison in your 50’s is like, and how becoming a peer support worker while inside led her to the work she does now with St Giles Trust. Now, he’s the co-founder of CodeAtt, a Not For Profit Organisation that teaches coding to prison leavers and young people at risk of crime and helps them get jobs.
