How we take care of ourselves inside and out matters. I hate to say it. When we treat our body with dignity, we feel dignified - and there’s this intoxicating energy that comes with it that even makes our family feel good too. If doing something or wearing something helps me feel strong and confident, I WANNA DO WAY MORE A THAT. And whatever makes me feel like hiding when the doorbell rings, I WANNA DO WAY LESS A THAT. This isn’t about meeting cultural beauty standards. This is about taking the time and effort to do that things that make us feel strong and confident. Some women feel boss in sporty clothes. Some in a dresses. Some in shredded jeans, some in leather. Some in all natural, locally sourced cotton blends. Some with little to no makeup, some looking like they took a Tammy Faye Baker online makeup tutorial. It’s whatever lights you up! Taking care of ourselves shouldn’t be considered self-care as if it’s a luxury - it should be self-maintenance - things we must do to live long, healthy, confident lives. Are you engaged in self-care or self-sabotage? Are you standing tall and proud … or hiding? If all it takes is a little lip gloss, then girl - put it on! And I don’t care if you got no place to go! I love the idea of being a boss lady who handles her business, but I can’t seem to stop resenting all the business I’m handling. Just last Saturday I decided I wanted the kitchen nice and clean. I don’t know what happened, but as I approached hour two of picking some stuck on goo off my floor, I started to see my husband just - relaxing. Watching football. And I saw my girls pulling out huge containers of toys, throwing them around like freaking confetti. I saw red. I just looked at my husband like - I’m sorry, what do you do again? Am I here just to serve you, feed you and keep your house clean? What are you, a freaking king? Because if you are a king can you at least make the money of a king so I can scrub this floor whilst covered in rubies! Being a boss lady isn't about being a domestic servant, it's about honoring, respecting and valuing your responsibilities. What if the tireless, thankless work we do isn't a burden - what if it was sacred? What if it wasn't a nightmare - what if it could be worship? What if we actually saw the value of the work of our hands, regardless if anyone else does? Well that then, could actually change your life. Enjoy the show!

It’s still vivid in my mind. The sun was shining bright and I had hope in my heart. In my cheer, I had asked for help loading the dishwasher while I did a few other various tasks. After drinking my coffee, I went to put it in said dishwasher and stumbled upon what looked like a hoarder’s secret closet. Food spilling everywhere, random dishes caked with who knows what, Tupperware strewn about - and I think I found even a shoe - shoved in a Whirlpool. This wasn’t help, it was sabotage. And it was personal this time. I lost it. I really went nuts. And after taking my anger a few steps too far, I then had to apologize to make matters much worse. (I always hate when that happens - when I’m not in the wrong, but my reaction is so over the top, I become SUPER wrong). Womanhood ain’t no walk in the park, I’ll tell you that much. We’re miracle workers. But it can be a lonely business. And with all the balls we have to keep in the air, it’s easy to feel like we’ve failed. It’s easy to collapse in exhaustion and bubble up in resentment. It’s easy to think all we do is DO, but it’s never enough. We don’t have what it takes and we’ll never have our crap together. But the real truth is, you’re a Boss Lady. And so am I. Really. I know you don’t believe me now, but we know how to handle our business. No drama, not self-pity, no need for recognition, k? We got this. We do what we gotta do and we get done what we need to get done. It’s who we are. It may not always look perfect. We might have a long way to go. Kendra asked me a simple question that was so simple, but blew my mind. She asked, if you could live 5 other lives, what would you do? Think about it. If you weren’t doing what you’re doing now, what would you do? Have you ever really, truly thought about it? Coming up with 5 was a lot for me. It stretched me to go deep into my inner heart’s desire and I discovered two things … One, I long for a life that, at least on occasion, is away from social media, away from the Internet. Away from TV, Neflix or Handmaid’s Tale. I crave a life that sits in nature, watches birds, relaxes and has the space to think and just be still. And then I realized that I want to interview brilliant, inspirational people. I want to learn more and teach more of what I learned. During the course of our conversation, I had an “Aha” moment of two inner desires I had in me that I didn’t realize where there! So then the question is, what can I do today to make these inner desires come true? But! Before we embark on a new adventure, we have to understand two essential truths … 1 - Our baggage can’t come with us. 2 - And those who aren’t good stewards of what they have now, will never be able to handle more. I'm a flake addict. I agree to things I have no real intention of doing and then flake at the last minute. As I slip into my oversized elastic waist pajama pants, I shoot out text with a lame excuse as to why I can't make it. It's not a lie per se, it's just missing some essential truths. "Y'all have fun without me! Wish I could be there!" Then I turn on Netflix and put my blanket up to my chin. I also struggle to put my grocery cart back. All I need is a curb and I'll hop a wheel up and get the hell out of that parking lot before anyone's the wiser. I've also been known to change my mind on the "pricey" crackers and drop them off next to the milk instead of putting them back where I got them. I've realized that I never paid for something that got put in my sack and then rationalized that it wasn't my fault and enjoyed my good fortune. Thank you, Jesus! But here's what's weird. The other day I had a friend actually do something she said she was going to do, and I was for real stunned by it. How sad is that? People who live a life of excellence, who live an honest life of integrity, who do what they say and say what they do, are often so rare, they can really surprise us when we meet them. They're like unicorns who poop rainbow marshmallows. I don't want a new life, but I do want a new way of living. I want to be a unicorn who poops rainbow marshmallows. Sometimes we want something new in our life, but skip the most essential parts of ourselves. We want new experiences, but we don't want to be renewed within ourselves. But if we want a new life to stick, it has to start inside first before we can ever experience true newness on the outside. This was a live event we hosted in Kansas City and an incredible interview with writer/directer Cindy Chupack. She’s most known for her work on Sex and the City, but she’s also a New York times bestselling seller and has so many Emmys and Golden Globes she ran out of shelf space and had to have garage sales. Her credits are a mile long. She’s currently on her Netflix screening tour for her new movie she wrote and directed, titled Otherhood, starring Angela Basset, Patricia Arquette and Felicity Huffman - debuting on Netflix, August 2nd, 2019. We're done overthinking. We're done scanning for danger. We're done focusing on the negative that's preventing us from doing what's best for our lives. It's time to step out of the boat and just say screw it - I'm choosing to have faith I won't sink. And if I do sink, God's gonna catch me. In the bible, Peter is asleep in the boat when he sees Jesus walking on water. He's a brave, bold man and tells Jesus he wants to be on the water with him. Jesus calls for him to come. Peter steps out of the boat - that was the first big test of faith - but then he does what so many of us do ... instead of focusing on Jesus, he focuses on his circumstances. He sees the waves crashing ... and panics. Instantly he sinks. Jesus grabs his arm, pulls him up and says, "Oh you of little faith, why did you doubt?" Been there! And that's the question I have for you. Well? Why did you doubt? Today is the day we flop outta the boat. See you on the other side.

In today’s Hilarious Short Story Anna shares the year she went to a Haunted House with her BFF dressed as Alex and Piper of OITNB (in my defense, it was before the series went to crap) The Haunted House was put on by an Artist Co-op (first red flag) and found herself in the midst of a disgusting phycological thriller where she had to sign a waiver agreeing that she did not have PTSD or experienced violent or sexual trauma. Welcome to It’s Not That Serious Hilarious Short Stories! This week, I want to share the story of when my doctor unexpectedly checked my cervix. Two things to keep in mind - when anyone, doctors included, poke around my private parts, I like to bring integrity to the situation. Everyone and everything, nice and clean and polite. I had spent the day waddling around sweating in maternity jeans, that did not breathe, thank you very much and I panicked at what was likely the situation down there. Now, I know some of you are thinking, “Say Anna, doctors and nurses are professionals - they don’t care about stuff like that.” Friend, have you ever asked one? I made the mistake of asking my followers and the maternity nurses were like, “We notice if your situation ain’t right down there. Oh, Lord do we notice.” Second, not everyone feels pain deep into their soul upon having their cervix checked. I am not one of these people. I still recall this as being one of the worst pains I’ve ever felt, that probably because I got an epidural. But still. Alright, without further adieu here it is ...

If you thought that your past was too much to overcome, your circumstances too bleak or insurmountable to have a bright future, Tiffany proves there is nothing you can't overcome. There is always hope. Tiffany who is now a huge online super star with nearly 2 million followers, used to suffer with with a drug addiction that rapidly slipped out of control. This landed her in jail, which lead to rehab, where she eventually found herself pregnant in a half way house. Impatience is a brutal joy killer. It's an entitlement to having our expectations met, the way we want it when we want it. Expectations that are probably a smidge unrealistic to begin with. And when we don't get our way? Heavy sigh. Tapping foot. Snarky comment. Full blown meltdown. We have to fully understand and prepare for the fact that all good things worth while take time. And that the best way to combat impatience? Like the entire month of December leading up to Christmas Day - joy is often most found in the anticipation, the preperation and the hope of a wonderful blessing. Trying to impress people is exhausting and never ending. Man uses things like status to create hierarchies of control, but to God - all of that is meaningless. It doesn't matter how many famous people you name drop, your connections, your title, your status or whether or not you're dating a Kardashian (especially that last part). You're free from trying to be something the world thinks is important and free to be exactly who you are. You don't need a PhD, be a CEO or have a popular YouTube channel to be somebody special - you already are. It's time to stop wasting time on things that are useless and pursue what really matters - then maybe we can finally get some things done around here! Enjoy the show

In today's episode, we are talking reedom in Christ and what that really means to us as believers. One - we’re free from the POWER of sin - free from shame and guilt. We are no longer condemned God constantly gives us these epic, unconditional love, do-overs - and what we decide to do with those do-overs is what will inevitably give us the wonderful, adventure filled life that God intended for us, or a life of continual struggle. God gives us the opportunity, but it’s on us to seize it. God gave us all of this free will and he says, you are forgiven, you are not condemned, you are mine and if you focus on me first - all things are possible. THAT, my friends - is such an incredible opportunity that we must take it. Every single believer who doesn’t take that and run with it?Who puts their own chains around their ankles and pretends they’re stuck? There’s no other way to say it -THAT is a tragedy.

This week we had flooding that went under our floors and seeped into our walls. A crew came out and placed huge utility fans all throughout the basement and turned them on. It’s so loud, I actually thought it couldn’t be happening. I was upstairs in my kitchen and felt like I was guiding a Boeing 757 to its terminal without head gear. Then, the very polite leader of the crew told me the fans needed to stay on until they returned Monday. Monday, was um, 4 days away. Unless we were locked away in a bedroom, none of us could hear each other in the house. Our minds would adapt to the noise, but our bodies felt the burden of it. It was a sense you were under something you couldn’t get over. The crew leader texted me a time for Monday and I jumped on the opportunity to beg. “Um, I realize this is for our good - but the fans have really exhausted us. If I have to yell “What?!” one more time to someone in my family - I think we’re all gonna lose it.” Thankfully, he said we could shut some of them off, but to turn them back on at night. I fled downstairs and started unplugging like a maniac. The oppressive noise lifted. We were free. Obviously this is a silly example, but think about the last time a fire alarm went off and it took awhile for the fire station to shut off the alarms. Once they did it’s like you could breathe again - your shoulders could relax. It was over. Bondage has that same weight over us. We may “get used to it” - not even notice it anymore - but our body is still burdened by it’s oppressive weight. Think feelings of shame, anger or guilt - we may think we want justice, or a new life, or a do-over that will never come. What we really want is to be free. And Jesus says we are. It can't, and we're kidding ourselves when we think we can live in fear, worry, stress, anger, self-loathing and [fill in the blank with our own terrible word] and expect ourselves to manage healthy bodies. Whenever I hear the song "All Must Be Well" from Liz Vice, my eyes well with tears. It's an upbeat song, so it always catches me off guard. But deep in my spirit I know why I'm compelled to cry. When my soul hears, "All Must Be Well," it leans into the promise. It longs for it. And so does my body. Let's get well. Enjoy today's episode!

Let me tell you a story. There was a time in my life when I knew I was ready to move forward and do great, big, wonderful things. But I just couldn't get my crap together. One minute I'd be focused with a plan. The next minute I'd be lost, confused and like, "Wait, what am I doing again?" I was doing bizarre things, completely out of character - just watching myself do it, like I was having an out of body experience. What was wrong with me? A lightbulb went off in my head. I was sabotaging myself.

1 Corinthians 6:19-21 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. It’s that time of year. Time to expose the bat wings and the legs that are in a desperate need of a shave. When we put on shorts and get an inner thigh rash at the zoo thanks to our severe lack of thigh gap, which in turn makes us hate everyone and everything, including the monster who created Dairy Queen’s Blizzard of the month. It’s the time for some tank tops and spaghetti straps while evaluating if our cotton candy arms should be allowed to meet and greet the world. The time of year when we reluctantly put away the cozy cardigans and other “late night cake eating hiders” (which is a very long nickname I like to give a very stylish Ugg robe I got for Christmas that hid all the regrets of the holidays - thus a garment I wore every day, obviously). As I reflected on my body - in front of a mirror with horrific lighting (not recommended) I realized a woman’s relationship with her temple is complicated. Not just complicated, but often abusive. Not just abusive in how we feed and nourish our bodies, but how we view, speak to and approach life within our bodies. Women’s bodies, throughout the ages, have been objectified not just by men - but by women. We often objectify ourselves and each other. Let's change that - starting now. Enjoy today's episode

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. There are so many of us walking around with crater sized emotional wounds from past storms. Denial, fear, avoidance, or covering it up doesn't serve us - in fact, it can destroy us. Today is a must listen for those of us with wounds that need healing so that we can live in the joy and peace and fullness of what God has for us. And if I can be frank - so we can get next level and chase those God sized dreams too.

The Bible tells us that believers have one thing, no one else has - that guarantees victory after the storm. Proverbs 10:25 When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more, but the righteous has an everlasting foundation. I love the comfort found in Proverbs 10:25. It assures us that, in God’s perfect timing, the storm will come to an end and the whirlwind will pass and the wicked will be no more... BUT. Do you see that big, fat BUT? It’s pretty important. BUT the righteous has an everlasting foundation. It doesn’t say everyone will have an everlasting foundation. It doesn’t say everyone will be blessed through their storms. Remember when Jesus was taking a snooze on a boat during a storm? And the disciples went into a full blown panic? Here they were - on a boat - WITH JESUS - and slipped into the panic abyss. The storms in life can be terrifying, but they don't have to be. Storms are our opportunity to show God our faith. Demonstrate our trust. Storms also allow a washing away of the old to make way for the new. And what's better, as believers, we are given full authority to fly above a storm into bright, clear skies. I love the illustration of our journey with God being like a long flight. If a bad storm cloud approaches, we can rise above it. Yes, as we enter the clouds, there will be bumps. We may get scared - but then, we are above the clouds. Calm air. We see the sun! And we can look down at the storm clouds below - and be in total peace. This is why Jesus slept during the storm. James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. As a great philosopher Biggie once said, "Mo Money, Mo Problems." And frankly, he was right. God is an abundant gift giver, but often we're too wrapped up in the wrong things to notice the gifts in the first place! Like little kids on Christmas morning who unwrap countless gifts and just eventually just start tossing things over their shoulder - how many of God's incredible, precious gifts have we just tossed aside? And even if we do receive the gift we've been hoping for, if we don't change our heart, "grow up" and have emotional and spiritual discipline, will the gift even matter - or worse, be the cause of our downfall? Here are Satan's most favorite strongholds: fear, anxiety, worry, low self-esteem, depression, doubt, suspicion, selfishness, addiction, anger, lust, jealous ... That's just to name a few. Or 11. Why? Because these lies strip us of our ability to be at peace. To be happy. To serve. To love. We can't set out into God's vision for our life when we're afraid, worried and riddled with anxiety. We can't pursue a dream and serve through our gifts if we have low self-esteem, feeling depressed or harboring envy in our hearts. We can't trust God and have faith if we're filled with doubt. We can't have a united loving home if we're consumed with lust, suspicion and selfishness. Catch the theme here? If we don't have peace, if we can't serve people with our gifts, if we can't trust God and have loving, fruitful relationships, then we aren't living, we're merely existing. And people merely existing are no threat to the enemy. Don't give the enemy the satisfaction. Refuse to believe the lies. Fight for your life with everything you've got. The bible says we have the authority to break the bondage of these strongholds, so quit acting like it's hopeless. God is our hope, he's our savior and he gives us everything we need. Not today, Satan!

Isaiah 43: 1-5 Do not be afraid, I will save you. I have called you by name - you are mine. When you pass through deep waters, I will be with you; your troubles will not overwhelm you. When you pass through fire, you will not get burned; the hard trials that come will not hurt you. For I am the Lord your God - because you are precious to me and because I love you and give you honor, do not be afraid - I am with you. When we're lonely - when we feel betrayed by friends, misunderstood, all alone, even surrounded by people who are supposed to know us and care for us the most - we can take comfort in knowing Jesus understands the full breadth of what we're experiencing, because he experienced it too. Peter denied knowing him. His disciples fell asleep when he was most vulnerable and in crisis. He was lied about, misunderstood, rejected and scorned. Galatians 6:2-7: Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. Boundaries are a necessary ingredient to healthy, functional friendships. One might even call boundaries Godly. The Bible says to carry each other's burdens - but we need to carry our own load, sister. God wants us to help and love one another, but he wants us to be responsible for our own lives. And when we're in need, he wants us to go to Him first. Not only does carrying other people's load eventually wear us down into the ground, but it also inhibits the other person's growth. We step in as if we're God and take it all upon ourselves. No one benefits when one person is taking on everybody's problems. Instead of one person being a hot mess not everybody's a hot mess! God can't bring us to another level if we're not even pushing our own wheelbarrow - or too busy pushing everybody else's. Get yo'self some boundaries, girl!

John 15:13 - Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. When you think of a friend, what do you think of? Someone who is loyal? Someone who listens? Someone who laughs at your jokes? (Full disclosure, that's one of my top criteria. I kid! Sort of.) Someone you can trust to burn your private journals after you die? What about cattiness? Betrayal? Gossip? Disappointment? Friendships are complicated. The clash of personalities, mismatched expectations, lack of time or commitment. One person may think the friendship is close while the other thinks it's merely a casual connection. Friends can bring us more comfort and support and joy than our own families. Some friendships can bring us more pain than we can imagine. Friends can be easy breezy and friends can be a lot of hard work. After John 15:13, Jesus goes on to call us His friends. What kind of friend does God want us to be? Do we have appropriate boundaries or are we too walled off? This week we're focusing on Romans 1:11-12: I am yearning to see you, that I may impart and share with you some spiritual gift to strengthen and establish you. Our New Beginnings, if truly a new beginning, is to truly take shape – we need a strategy. In order to achieve His purposes, God doesn’t just recommend a strategy – HE COMMANDS IT. I remember listening to TD Jakes once – he was talking about money and finances. He said, “You don’t need a miracle! New beginnings. They can be hard. Scary. Intimidating. A new beginning means we have to shed the past. Past trauma, past fear, past hurts, past guilt, past non-sense. Our old self, old sins, old habits, old low self-esteem. This is our time for renewal. But in order for God to renew us, we must be able to shed our old inhibiting thoughts, shame, guilt nasty habits and dysfunctional relationships. This is easier said than done, though right? Unconditional love. Forgiveness. There's nothing we can do that would make God turn from us, not forgive us and not love us. Forgiveness - the most incredible gift God can give, and one of the easiest to take for granted. Do we truly grieve over our sins as we should? Because of our sins, we and our kings and our priests have been subjected to the sword and captivity, to pillage and humiliation at the hand of foreign kings, as it is today. Ezra showed a sincere and powerful reverence, humility and remorse for his sin. We don't have to do this. We're already forgiven. There are many, MANY passages in the Bible that tell us not to fear. Fear is not from God, it's from ... guess who? Get behind me Satan! Fear can quite literally ruin our lives. Fear causes us to hoard, to hide. Fear causes us to quit. To never start. Fear causes us to go inward, to recede. Fear causes us to be over protective and by doing so, causes us to miss amazing opportunities and experiences. That is not the kind of life God has called us to live. He can't use us through His purpose for our life when we're a mess, hiding and untrusting. Anna and Susannah talk about our most debilitating fears and God's promises that have helped us overcome them. Fear is a choice. But in the moment, we're called to face it. When I was a teenager, I worked at ShopKo, a department store. I was a cashier, and I was terrible. I mean, I can run toilet paper over a barcode like the next kid, but I hated being there so much that it oozed from my pores. I kid you not, people avoided my line because of the look on my face. You know the term "resting b**** face?" Well I have that naturally already, but add me preferring a root canal to being a cashier in that moment, and people were holding their children tight and running their carts over to Beth, the older cashier with a warm smile, and unlike me, didn't have a stick up her butt. The Bible says we need to serve God in all things we do, cheerfully - at that. Colossians 3:23: Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as something done for the Lord and not for men.
