We’ve made it- it’s the final day of the Tokyo Games, and we have emerged intact, covid-free, and laden with sweet, sweet gold. The final days saw more success for Australia; God brought home Tom Green and Jean van der Westhuyzen for gold on a kayak, but could only afford Nicola McDermott a silver in the high jump. Nevertheless, does Liberal preselection await? Elsewhere, Keegan Palmer settled the debate on what constitutes an essential service, before we marvelled at the quick-thinking of Cedric Dubler in the decathlon. Then we pardoned the Kookaburras for breaking the rules for a few slabs. Triathlon is under the pump, with calls for a culture review emanating from a disgruntled former athlete- and that’s good enough for us. Will they finally admit to the one glaring issue that has dogged the sport? And will Woman’s Day play it’s part? Finally, we wrap up this glorious no-fun event by discussing the winners and losers. Was our high finish in the medal tally adequate? How good was it to see the IOC finally get a win? Will the inevitable next wave of covid be worth it for Japan? In this episode, which was recorded just before the start of Tokyo 2020, we're fondly reflecting on the true Bad Boys (and Girls) of Australian Olympic History. Sung to the theme of Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire, our subjects include: "Nick D'arcy, Kendrick Monk, posing in a gun shop. Stilnox, John Coates, Cultural Review." "Steph Rice Homophobic Tweet, Michael Diamond DUI, Sally Robbins laying down, nation's on the fritz." Audio production by Tim 'T-Dog' Eldridge; graphic design thanks to Julia Edwards. We’re deep in to the post-swimming medal frenzy. The rivers of gold have slowed, and Australia is diligently scouring the beach with a metal detector for anything that resembles a precious metal. Thankfully, sailing is keeping us afloat, with Matthew Belcher and Will Ryan picking up another ‘just show up’ gold medal. Does this mean we are on the cusp of a sailing boom? And what’s in an seafaring AusKick pack anyway? Elsewhere, boxing sensation Harry Garside is taking the world by storm, sinking seasoned Kazakhstani veterans with his rapid hands and painted fingernails, drawing comparisons with some of history’s greatest fighters, and Wil Anderson. Andrew Hoy has done his bit with a silver and a bronze, fuelling dreams of a berth in Brisbane 2032. And better yet, Coatesy got in on the act to share war stories- and wasn’t it good to see two Aussie battlers get their dues? Wrapping it up, we talk about the need for naked athletes, Bill Shorten, Shane Heal on the corpie circuit, and the massive revelation the IOC is still drug testing athletes. Melbourne comic Tim "Big Hewy" Hewitt joins us today on our special 'Olympic Reflections' mini-series! We start with a very recent memory (Anastacia's parochial reaction to the Brisbane 2032 bid win), before deep-diving Australia's brief and weird obsession with the pole vault, triggered by gold medallist/psycho redhead Steve Hooker and the glamorous Tatiana Grigorieva. That naturally leads to a discussion around swimming dads and illegal body suits. After the break we talk Stilnox and gun laws before gleefully veering off-piste via a chance reference to Jana Pittman's adult braces. We close things out by imagining how the UFC would go as an Olympic sport. Give Hewy a follow on Insta (@hewybaby) for some elite Olympics video content and for updates on upcoming comedy gigs. His podcast, Feed Em Brah, is also available on all the usual channels. Elite audio production from Tim 'T-Dog' Eldridge; graphic design thanks to Julia Edwards. Cam Duggan and Gerard McGowan, two-thirds of the excellent Mugg Off Podcast, join the show as part of our special 'Olympic Reflections' mini-series. We discuss Eric 'The Eel' Moussambani, who stole our hearts at Sydney 2000 despite coming from a country which didn't have an Olympic pool. How did he get into the Olympics? Why didn't someone jump in to help a bloke who was clearly drowning in front of our eyes? Where is he now? We then go on to reflect on cult hero Jai Taurima, the larrikin athlete who used to put his ciggies out in the long jump sandpit. Apparently he's an AFP officer now, which is disappointing. The Mugg Off is an elite comedy podcast hosted by three blokes from Sydney's inner west. Download it wherever you get your podcasts. Scintillating Sunday has moved in to Magic Monday, and we’re blissfully counting our ever-growing mountain of gold. Where do we start? Logan Martin picked up an unlikely gold in BMX, leaving the nation in a bunny-hop lather and sending his real estate agent scrambling for an effective way to market a BMX track. Matt Wearn won our first ‘welfare’ gold by simply ‘turning up’, while chronic over-achiever Rohan Browning momentarily reignited our passion for the 100m dash. Will he be immediately be instated as an IOC dignitary? Emma McKeon is now officially our 'Greatest Ever Olympian'. But now that the swimming is over, we're left staring at a dangerous cliff face for national morale. Not only this, our swimmers are facing the ignominy of lame virtual celebrations upon return. Should we divert the Medicare levy to our triumphant athletes as compensation? Or sell their gold for Brownlow Medals? Then we talk aggressive Chinese sprinters, (passive) aggressive Jamaican sprinters, and whether Bruce McAvaney is being bullied for being too professional. We examine one of the most iconic moments in Australian sporting history: the time Kieren Perkins won Gold in the 1500m from lane 8 at Atlanta 1996. He'd barely qualified for the team, he was ill before the race, and he was plagued by self-doubts and panic attacks. But he romped it home from the "graveyard" Lane 8 position to secure his place in our hearts, and a lifetime's worth of board directorships and corporate sponsorships. Will the nation "stop" for an event like this again? Have social media, Gen Z slackers and slogan politics killed the 1500 metre race? Is there anything better than a clean cut Olympian winning an against-the-odds gold in an obscure timezone for broadcast? Audio production courtesy of Tim ‘T-Dog’ Eldridge. Super Saturday is here and the gold on the water at Tokyo 2020 continues to flow apace. From Wednesday's "67 minutes of glorious gold" to the extreme dominance in the Rowing, Australia's been unashamedly stockpiling medals for the looming athletics drought. But is the gold getting old? Is a breaststroke gold really worth the column inches? And are the TV-polished fathers of our winners right to be obdurate and scripted in their reactions? But for every story of triumph, there’s one of utter national shame. The Opals were trumped by the Chinese (and rightly so... please don’t cyber-attack us), and our rugby Sevens teams are playing off for positions in the double-digits. Still, at least Kyle Chalmers might get a spot in the VFL ressies at half-back flank upon return. Finally, the Equestrian is here - and that means the nation's expectations shift to the trembling 62-year-old shoulders of Andrew Hoy. Can we bank on this older gentleman for Gold in the Olympics' only gender neutral event? Audio production courtesy of Tim ‘T-Dog’ Eldridge. Graphic design courtesy of Julia Edwards. Kurt Fearnley is Australia's pre-eminent Good Strong Bloke (GSB). Over a 25-year career, he's amassed three Paralympic Gold medals, two Olympic silver medals and seven world titles. He's also crawled the Kokoda Trail, crewed the winning yacht in the Sydney to Hobart, and jagged an OAM. We hear what it's like to be an 18-year-old competing in front of 118,000 people at Sydney 2000, to winning Gold in Athens 2004 (despite busting a tyre 5km from the finish line). We discuss the pressure of perfection at the elite level - including Simone Biles' exit from Tokyo 2020 - and the 'feast or famine' nature of life after sport for many Olympians. We also get the low down on which Australians to look out for in the upcoming Paralympics, which kick off August 24. Today we are going back to a defining moment in Australia’s sporting history: The Olympic swimming selection trials of 2004. The nation held its breath when Ian Thorpe slipped on the blocks in the 400m qualifying heats for Athens 2004, earning an automatic disqualification from the stickler official. Thorpe claimed a noise caused him to jump. the blocks. What was that noise? Was it the sound of sponsorship dollars going down the drain? Or perhaps the NRL's Phantom Siren diversifying into new sports? Anyway, his appeal was unsuccessful - and our dreams of back-to-back Gold in the 400m were dashed. That is, until teammate Craig Stevens bowed to public pressure, stepping aside to give his place to Thorpe and pocketing $130k for the "tell all" interview rights. Was this a Gallipoli-like sacrifice, or just another small step towards the general malaise of Australian society? Audio production courtesy of Tim ‘T-Dog’ Eldridge. We’ve got Gina Rinehart-levels of gold flowing in the pool thanks to Ariane Titmus and Kaylee McKeown, and a swimming team that is pleasing its AOC masters by rag-dolling socials with regular viral content. But while this may be keeping John Coates happy, what about the locals in Japan? Is there anything in the COVID marshall handbook for negotiating a gyrating white man? And why does the IOC bristle about podium trivialities, but couldn’t care less about a profanity voiced by Rebecca Gibney? Once this is sorted, we talk about the ASMR-qualities of Ian Thorpe, blokes in Kathmandu puffer jackets and a repechage for Good Strong Women, before wrapping it up with daggy parents and China’s tactic of conquering the West by body-shaming it’s own female weightlifters. Day 4 is here, and we’re already in the bad books with the IOC. But who cares, because how good’s a relay gold with no subsequent commercial impact? Even though they’ll never see a corpie, our 4x100m relay golden girls crushed the Americans on the way to gold. But was it enough to satiate our collective appetite for medals? And how much of this undue pressure can we shift on to the shoulders of Ariarne Titmus? For those unaware, she’s the girl from the Harvey Norman ads. Not only do we badly need her to trump evil American Katie Ledecky, but Gerry Harvey does too. Can she bring it home for the whitegoods tsar after a gruelling year without JobKeeper? Whether or not she salutes, at least Channel 7 will routinely remind us about the AFL. Apparently it’s a new Olympic sport now along with netball, mainly because Patrick Dangerfield said so. Better yet, we’ve got Basil Zempilas, one bloke with a truckload of Insta followers in K-Mart youth clobber, and Dean Capobianco just listed his Clovelly home - and it’s all set against the backdrop of Japanese efficiency and the ferocious delta strain. Much like a 40-year-old man trying to impress the friends of his new 22-year-old girlfriend, the IOC is rolling out a bunch of ‘rad’ new sports at Tokyo 2020. But why does everything have to be new? Broadcast dollars, mainly. But it's not the IOC's most desperate cash grab: that was Paris 1900, which included highly marketable sports such as live pigeon shooting and poodle clipping. Karate's in at Tokyo, and that makes sense, but what the actual fuck is 'Sport Climbing'? We're assume it's like the Wall on 'Gladiators', with matches refereed by Mike Whitney and John Alexander (with Mike Hammond as lead commentator.) Meanwhile, our skateboarding team is made up of a handful of teenagers plus a 31-year-old bloke who was selected to do the bottle shop runs. Plus Joel Caine has been tapped to do the live odds reads at the Keirin event. Introducing our special 'Spotlight on Tokyo' mini-series (14:25). Audio production from Tim ‘T-Dog’ Eldridge. After a typically precise and covid-devalued Opening Ceremony, Day 1 is underway at Tokyo. Join the boys as they run the rule over the fanfare of the first night at the Tokyo National Stadium and face the burning questions that arose. How good was the lights and graphics and shit? Will the weight of a state-of-the-art graphite flagpole cost Cate Campbell? And if the Olympics are supposed to help us forget about COVID, then why was the whole thing packed with references to this feral virus? Once that’s sorted, we’ll look forward to the Aussies in action on day one. There’s a six-time table tennis legend, blue collar hockey players, and a good strong bloke on the surfboard. Who should we keep an eye on? Who’s going to bomb out? And who deserves the weight of a nation’s unattainable expectations? Welcome to Have a Go's special daily coverage of the Tokyo 2020 Games. Many thought it wouldn't happen, but through sheer determination (and water-tight contracts) the IOC have fought off a global pandemic to muscle this thing in to existence. Sport is a microcosm of society - it gives us hope and dares us to dream... or some shit - but do the Japanese even want this? Meanwhile, the athletes are under strict orders not to engage in any coital activities in the Village. What's the point of winning Gold if you can't wear your medal out on the circuit to attract women? There's already been controversies - our equestrians are on the nose beers, our tennis players are getting COVID, our basketballers getting into altercations - while our softball team invoked the Mercy Rule in their hiding at the hands of a rampant Japan. Meanwhile, the Matilda's took a noble stand against racism... only to be outdone by New Zealand yet again. Finally, AOC boss John Coates is feeling bloody hot right now after landing Brisbane 2032. How good's absolute, unchallenged power? Audio production courtesy of Tim ‘T-Dog’ Eldridge. Graphic design courtesy of Julia Edwards. It's the quadrennial event that unites the world in a kaleidoscope of excitement, triumph, and premium advertising opportunities. Here in Australia, we love a gold medal more than anything else (especially one we haven't budgeted for). And we'll never forget that the Sydney 2000 Games were universally declared the "best ever". It was a simpler time: the economy was booming, political leadership was stable, there were fewer Royal Commissions, Roy and HG were on Free-to-Air TV, and there were certainly no defamation lawsuits being levelled by Victoria Cross recipients. But today, the feats of Duncan Armstrong, Cathy Freeman, the Oarsome Foursome, Nikki Webster and Rod McGeoch are a distant memory, with the unconditional adoration for our plucky athletes and administrators making way for nitpickers hell-bent on calculating the precise taxpayer cost for each gold medal. So, is this glorified amateur athletics carnival still relevant in 2021? Or has COVID dulled our enthusiasm for this great global symbol of hope and peace? Are we too wrapped up in our provincial footy codes to consider the soft power diplomacy impact of winning a decathlon bronze? And hang on, has Brisbane seriously lobbed a bid for 2032? Religion. It's literally divided nations and incited pretty much every single war throughout history. But while Australia remains a majority Christian society, more than 30% of Australians said they have "no religion" in the 2016 Census. Is Twitter taking over from the Good Book? Is "Wokeism" the newest religion - and if so, who would be its spiritual leader? But is the separation between Church and State starting to fade? Our Prime Minister Scott Morrison is a devout Pentecostalist who blesses his constituents (non-consensually). Our politicians are mulling a Religious Discrimination Bill which would give even greater freedom to Australians - and controversial rugby players such as Israel Folau - to copy and paste Bible passages on social. We see ourselves as a tolerant, enlightened society, so why do we go berserk whenever a new Mosque is being built out West? Malcolm's SSM postal vote solved homophobia once and for all, so why is Margaret Court still getting column inches? And is it still socially acceptable to mock people who are saving themselves for marriage (like we did with Jason Stevens on the Footy Show in 2001?) When the NSW Blues and Queensland Maroons collide at 8:17pm on a school night, it’s more than just a game of rugby league. It’s decades of pent-up tension, a raging inferiority complex, and cultural warfare on a molecular level. It’s also CTE and pokie money. However, Origin is wobbling on the precipice as it faces scrutiny from all-comers. Is the concept’s treasured tapestry under threat from loose immigration laws and rigged refs? Can it survive the cultural axemen of contemporary times (that being the modern wowsers of the green-left thought police, and science)? Where are the characters in modern footy? Tommy Raudonikis? Alfie? Fatty? "The Axe"? "Spud"? "Dishhead" Dowling? "Grasshopper" Gomersall? These days players are dancing to K-Pop at media events. From the deadly serious issues dogging the nation all the way down to the triviality of butter, we will conduct a Royal Commission in to anything. It’s an obsession that has even beset our sporting teams, with culture reviews into cricket, hockey (and a number of other sports you’d forgotten about) now the process de jour for getting to the bottom of a stink. But why do we hold these laborious and monstrously-expensive reviews if we’re just going to ignore the recommendations? And what’s the point when the answers are presented three years after the fact? From our earliest history, this country has adored a frothie like nothing else. Whether a work function, a catch-up with family or a three year old’s birthday party, there is no event that can be undertaken in Australia without it being densely imbued by booze. But why do we crave the sweet elixir with such concerning fanaticism? Has anyone seen the end of Friday Night Footy without being half-cut? Today we’re talking about Canberra – it’s the home of our federal parliament, the centre of national politics and the beating heart of our public service. But our politicians have been taking the piss down there for decades. A deep-seated cultural rot has set in. There's a culture review into the parliamentary workplace, and for good reason. These blokes are deadset out of control. Walter Burley-Griffin would be turning in his grave. So, how do we fix Canberra and pull these blokes back in line? Take away their smartphones? "The economy" is the number one issue for Australians at the ballot box, even if no-one knows what that means. When COVID struck, there was a bit of a line outside Centrelink for a couple of days, but we rolled out a few stimulus packages and a government program or two and we’re roaring back. Or so we're told. But what happens if we lose our AAA credit rating? Probably nothing hey. If the AUD is smashing the USD is that a good thing or a bad thing? Home to the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, Roxy Jacenko, Alan Jones, and a host of recently deceased white collar criminals, Sydney is truly Australia's glittering crown jewel. But is Sydney really that "good", or does Melbourne's cafe culture give it the edge when it comes to the all-important "liveability" stakes? While the Harbour is indeed sparkling, and its people are undeniably more attractive than anywhere else in Australia, Sydney does have an affordability issue. So how do we ensure all Sydneysiders can afford their regular intake of Acai bowls? Sydney will have an estimated population of 8 million by 2050, but no one wants to live west of Annandale? What's the solution: more WestConnex tunnels? Encouraging young people to live nomadic lifestyles on London-style hipster house boats? If there’s one thing Australians don’t like, it’s change. Climate change, especially. Australia has the third highest proportion of "climate deniers" in the world. But what's wrong with being a bit iffy when only 97% of peer-reviewed experts say humans are to blame for climate change? Sure, global warming has killed more Prime Ministers than people, but why can't Scott Morrison just sort it out immediately? What does "net zero" emissions mean anyway? (sounds bloody good whatever it is). And whatever happened to Earth Hour... is that still a thing? If so, they need to work on their socials. Rightly or wrongly, the events of Gallipoli have shaped our national identity for over 100 years. In 1915, Australia was a newly federated nation still on its P plates, searching desperately for a sense of self. But what does the ANZAC Spirit mean to us in 2021? Why are we ripping Victoria Cross medals off our most decorated soldiers when we could just chalk it up to the mysterious "Fog of War"? How do we properly install the Spirit into the next generation of milky-handed recruits (presumably via an iOS update)? What even is "mateship" anyway? Is it OK for left-wing social commentators to tweet controversial views about our ANZACs, or should we continue to exile them from Australia until they recite all 4 verses of Advance Australia Fair at gunpoint? And how can nightclubs tastefully leverage the ANZAC Spirit in two-for-one drinks promotions? Featuring more unfiltered insights from prominent social commentator and Aussie comedian, Luke Heggie. Australia's a pretty safe place to live, but that doesn't mean we take our national security lightly. The current terror threat level is listed as "probable," so COVID hasn't completely wiped the bastards out yet. But do we really know who our enemies are? Maybe they're closer than we think. Perhaps they're even being canvassed for pre-selection as we speak. As such, we must all remain both alert and alarmed at all times. Even when drinking out of a prosthetic leg for a laugh. And stop the boats (but continue purchasing as many submarines as possible to defend us against China). Special guest Sean Woodland makes his social commentator debut on the Have a Go Podcast. COVID has utterly consumed our attention for the past year, but it's time to reignite the "Big Australia" debate. There's a lot to be worried about. For starters, our rapidly ageing population and workforce. By 2050, the life expectancy will be nudging 90. Can you imagine being served a piccolo by a 70-year-old barista? How will we deal with increasing urban congestion? More lightrail? Can we convince our millions of unemployed Arts graduates to move to regional areas? Will coastal erosion destroy the Hemsworth brothers' property portfolios? Is Harry Triguboff already eyeing development opportunities on the Three Sisters? Featuring more unfiltered insights from prominent social commentator and Melbourne Comedy Festival fan favourite, Luke Heggie. Spicy stings courtesy of audio producer Tim "T-Dog" Eldridge. Australia and the US share a treasured, long-term alliance. But is that relationship as strong today as it once was? We'll always answer the phone when they call us, but will Biden blue tick our Whatsapp messages when China shows up on our doorstep? If the US won an all-expenses paid trip to Rosehill Races for itself and five friends, would we even make the cut? We need to get up in America's eyeline and sort this out before it's too late. *** Featuring more unfiltered insights from social commentator and friend of the show, Aussie comedian Luke Heggie. Australia and New Zealand. Big brother, little brother. The way it was always meant to be. But this once-friendly relationship is rapidly deteriorating. They're lecturing us on China. Humiliating us with their progressive attitude to social and environmental issues. Hoarding the Bledisloe for decades. Put simply, they think they're better than us. Can we wrest back control over this relationship and put NZ back in its place? Or... is it already too late? In this episode, we're reflecting on our respective personal experiences in the public and private educational systems. Sandstone buildings versus flammable demountables. Early exposure to the opposite sex versus not talking to a woman until the age of 18. An "asterisk" in the HSC versus having four QCs on speed dial. But do elite insular institutions breed a toxic environment, or is that outweighed by the networking opportunities? And what's it like to graduate without trauma? Featuring more incisive social commentary by top Australian comedian (and Christian Brothers school graduate) Luke Heggie. With Harry and Meghan in the headlines this week - and the Royal Family copping all sorts of heat - we thought it was a good time to stick the boot in by revisiting the Republic debate. In 1999, Australia had the opportunity to formally cut the apron strings with Mother England. But in one of our greatest ever cuck moves, we voted "no" in the Australian Republic referendum, and since then we've pretty much forgotten about it. Firstly, do we even want this? Secondly, if we were to take the bold leap from being a "Constitutional Monarchy" to a Republic, who would we choose as an Australian Head of State? Greg Norman? Shane Warne? Susan Kennedy from Neighbours? Surely anything is better than Prince Charles, a bloke who literally travels around the world with his own white leather toilet seat. Back in the 1970s, you'd probably pay $30,000 for a quarter-acre block in a nice leafy suburb. These days, a grizzly asbestos-ridden 2-bedroom shack positioned directly under a flight path will set you back at least $1.8m. If you don't have a house by now, you probably never will. So, whatever happened to the Great Australian Dream? How did things get this bad? And more importantly, who can we blame? The government? Banks? Boomers? Chinese investors? Property apps? Celebrity real estate agents? Scotty Cam and/or Jamie Durie? Society in general? Featuring more unfiltered insights from social commentator and comedian Luke Heggie. Through the ages, Australia’s always had a soft spot for a lovable larrikin. But today, the larrikin faces an uncertain future… perhaps, even the threat… of extinction. Is there still a place in our hearts for the larrikin? Can the larrikin evolve to meet today's cancel culture landscape? Or has Australia simply lost its larrikin streak… for good? In the first episode of The Have a Go Podcast, we're tackling the escalating tensions between China and Australia. Our relationship with China is seriously on the rocks. They've issued us a list of 14 grievances. They don't want our wine, our timber, our wool, our lobsters. Even our bloody cherries. It's looking pretty grim. Can't we just shake hands and get on with it, or are we spiralling towards full-scale conflict? And is Gen Z even ready to fight for our country, or should we just lie down and let them have it? The Australian Broadcast Corporation. Established in 1929 as a national broadcaster for "all Australians." Play School, RAGE, Grandstand, Club Rugby. A cultural icon for generations of Australians. But these days the ABC is under the pump. It's funding has been slashed to the back teeth. It's been accused of catering to inner city elites. How do we fix the ABC? Or do we just sell it off to Rupert Murdoch and get it over and done with? Featuring regular guest appearance from social commentator and comedian Luke Heggie.
