Send us a text 1979 marked a pivotal year in basketball history, with Larry Bird leading the Indiana State Sycamores to an undefeated regular season. Before this, Bird remained relatively unknown, despite his exceptional talent. The national broadcast of the Sycamores' game against Wichita State, championed by individuals like Rex Lardner and Al McGuire, brought Bird's skills to the forefront. This game, a resounding victory for Indiana State, solidified their position as the nation's top team and marked the beginning of Bird's legendary career. The rising popularity of college basketball coincided with a decline in the NBA's appeal, possibly due to factors like drug issues and a lack of a dominant team. Bird's captivating journey, from his early days to his national recognition, is a testament to his hard work, resilience, and undeniable talent. Send us a text This week, we take a look at the media frenzy surrounding basketball star Larry Bird during his undefeated season at Indiana State. Bird's refusal to engage with the media created a unique challenge for Ed McKee, the school's sports information director. McKee was inundated with requests from various outlets, from major publications to niche magazines, all eager to speak with the star player. However, Bird's silence forced McKee into the uncomfortable position of denying these requests. Indiana State President Richard Landini recognized the extraordinary nature of Bird's talent and supported his decision to avoid the media. Landini understood that individuals with Bird's abilities are rare and deserved respect for their choices. This situation highlights the delicate balance between a player's right to privacy and the public's desire for access to celebrated athletes. Send us a text This podcast episode will discuss the Michigan State Spartans' shocking loss to the Northwestern Wildcats in 1979. The Spartans, a strong team led by Magic Johnson, were expected to easily defeat the struggling Wildcats. However, the Spartans played poorly, shooting a season-low 32.8 percent from the field. They were unable to overcome Northwestern's zone defense and reliance on jump shots. The Wildcats, energized by the home crowd, dominated the second half, leading by as many as 15 points. This upset victory left the Spartans questioning themselves and their ability to compete. Magic Johnson, despite scoring 26 points, was left feeling sick to his stomach, expressing his disbelief at the team's repeated losses. The team's struggles highlighted their over-reliance on Magic Johnson to generate offense and revealed internal problems stemming from their recent string of losses. Send us a text The 1979 college basketball season was a pivotal moment in the sport's history. It was the year that two future NBA legends, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, first faced off in the NCAA championship game. The game was a clash of styles, with Michigan State's fast-paced, high-flying offense led by Johnson's passing going up against Indiana State's deliberate, disciplined approach anchored by Bird's shooting and rebounding. Michigan State won the game in a thrilling finish, but Bird's performance solidified him as a star. The 1979 season also marked a seismic shift in college basketball. The Big Ten Conference was finally stepping out of football's shadow, and smaller conferences like the Missouri Valley were now in the spotlight. The NCAA tournament, which was limited to two teams per conference, had incredibly high stakes. This made the atmosphere electric and packed the arenas, creating incredible battles and controversial calls. The 1979 season set the stage for one of the most iconic rivalries in sports history. Johnson and Bird would go on to face each other in the NBA Finals three times, with each player winning two championships. Their rivalry helped to bring the NBA back into the mainstream and paved the way for the sport's massive popularity today. Magic , from the start, was a showman , and sought out the spotlight . Bird , in contrast, just wanted to play basketball , and largely shunned publicity . Send us a text This episode of The Anxious Rambler podcast focuses on the host’s recent concert experiences seeing The War on Drugs for two nights in Ohio and Kentucky and a solo trip to see My Morning Jacket in Savannah, Georgia. The hosts begin by talking about their road trip to Columbus, Ohio, the first stop on their concert adventure. They discuss the enjoyment of driving into a city at night and listening to music and their excitement about the upcoming shows. The host shares that, other than a previous two-night stint with The War on Drugs in Louisville and Indianapolis, this is her first experience attending back-to-back shows by the same band. They also talk about their positive impressions of Columbus and Cleveland. The first concert took place at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The host recounts the beauty of the venue, located in a national park, and its history as the summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra. They go on to describe The War on Drugs’ setlist, noting standout songs and moments. The setlist included “Oceans of Darkness,” “Pain,” “Ocean in Between the Waves,” “I Don’t Want to Wait,” “Harmonious Dreams,” “Strangest Thing,” “Come to the City,” and “In Reverse.”. The host shares a story about reconnecting with a former coworker, Lane, during the show. She describes how she thought she recognized the woman sitting in front of her but couldn't believe it was actually her. They hadn’t seen each other in 16 years. Lane later turned around and told the host she had been talking about her on the way to the show, specifically mentioning how much the host loves The War on Drugs and wishing she had more friends with similar taste in music. Next, the hosts talk about the second concert, which was at the Bourbon and Beyond festival in Louisville, Kentucky. The host compliments the festival’s side-by-side stage set-up and voices her distaste for VIP sections at shows. The setlist for this performance was similar to the previous night's but with the addition of "Red Eyes," which was played instead of "Strangest Thing," and the covers "Play It All Night Long" and "Under the Pressure." It started to rain during the last two songs of the set, a phenomenon that the host believes is a regular occurrence at outdoor War on Drugs shows. Due to her enthusiastic dancing and energy , the host is dubbed the "fan MVP" by other concert attendees and even manages to score a copy of the setlist. The final part of the episode focuses on the host's recent trip to Savannah, Georgia, where she saw My Morning Jacket with her best friend from home, Shaie. The host describes becoming emotional upon hearing that baseball legend Pete Rose had died just before My Morning Jacket took the stage. Rose, a Cincinnati Reds player and an important figure in the host’s family, had even recorded a Ca

This inspired Aaron to create a personal challenge to Cassie: curate her own setlist using live performances found across platforms like YouTube and the Internet Archive. Send us a text The 1987 season of Indiana basketball holds a special place in the history of NCAA. Led by the legendary Coach Bob Knight, the Indiana Hoosiers took home the NCAA Championship that year, marking one of the most memorable seasons in the history of Indiana basketball. The journey to this victory was not a conventional one. Bob Knight, known for his intricate adjustments and coaching techniques, was at the helm. His initial skepticism of the three-point shot, a relatively new rule change at the time, and his ability to adapt his strategy based on this rule change played a significant role in Indiana's championship run. The players' journey was equally unique. Key players like Keith Smart and Dean Garrett made significant contributions to the team's success. Their unique paths to Indiana, coupled with the iconic trip to China and the heart-wrenching loss to Cleveland State, helped shape the team's identity and their eventual championship run. The recruitment process was another critical aspect of Indiana's 1987 NCAA win. Bob Knight's honest approach in recruiting Winston Morgan, despite cultural transition challenges, helped shape the team's success. The effect of this recruitment strategy on the championship team is a fascinating story, offering insights into Knight's coaching philosophy and his impact on the program. The 1987 championship team faced many challenges and had to adapt to unconventional strategies employed by Coach Bob Knight. However, these adjustments and the players' ability to adapt played a crucial role in their championship win. Knight's trust in his players, their smart decisions, and their ability to execute the game-winning move in the NCAA Championship game were instrumental in clinching the championship. Reflecting on the championship game, the unorthodox strategy Coach Bob Knight employed, and how the players adjusted to these changes highlights the importance of finding the right players to fit the team. This team, despite not having the most talented players, managed to win the championship, demonstrating the significance of team chemistry and collaboration. Finally, looking at the 1987 Indiana Hoosiers in the context of today's competitive basketball environment offers a unique perspective. The changes in the game, the intensity of competition, and the shifting dynamics of college basketball make the achievements of the 1987 Indiana Hoosiers all the more impressive. In conclusion, the story of Indiana's 1987 NCAA Championship win is a captivating tale of unconventional strategies, player adaptation, and teamwork. The lessons from this unforgettable season remain relevant today, offering valuable insights into the world of basketball, coaching strategies, and the art of winning. An elite, exclusive Catholic institution in the nation’s capital better known for churning out attorneys and politicians and with nary a trace of hardwood pedigree was suddenly at the center of the college basketball universe. The Georgetown Hoyas’ relentless and assertive brand of basketball, carefully choreographed by a Black coach in John Thompson and an all-Black roster, made them heroes in inner cities around the country and a target for a mostly white media. And unapologetically, Thompson did it his way and became the first Black basketball coach to win an NCAA title when his Hoyas defeated Houston 84-75 in Seattle’s Kingdome on April 2, 1984. “I know I’m going to upset some people, but I can live with that,” Thompson said in a 1984 interview. Send us a text This is 19nine SHORTS, a fast break-styled lesson in hardwood history. On their way to the 1996 NCAA Championship, the Kentucky Wildcats sported one of the most distinctive uniform kits in modern NCAA basketball history – the so-called “denim blues.” Though the Kentucky denims now land a spot on nearly every credible list identifying the top Wildcat uniforms of all time, the novel look was not so enthusiastically received upon its debut in 1996. In fact, it was almost universally panned. In this inaugural edition of 19nine SHORTS, The Chucker, 19nine’s resident historian, explains how these now-treasured uniforms came into existence and the less-than-savory response they received. Send us a text Hail State! On this episode of the 19nine Podcast, we’re traveling back to the 1995-1996 college basketball season, when Iverson and Allen dazzled at The Garden, Kentucky stocked its roster with 9 future NBA players, Coach Cal led UMass to national prominence, The Macarena was the year’s hit song, and a Mississippi State squad led by Darryl Wilson, Dontae’ Jones, and 16-year NBA veteran Erick Dampier crashed the Final Four. To talk about the Bulldogs’ memorable March Madness run, we’re joined today by two rotation players on that team – Whit Hughes and Bart Hyche. A 5-11 freshman on the 1996 squad, Bart played in 31 games that season, including all five of the Bulldogs’ NCAA Tournament games. Whit, meanwhile, was a 6-5 sophomore forward who played in all 34 contests for the Bulldogs’ Final Four squad. We’re going to chat with Whit and Bart about their respective journeys to Starkville, playing basketball at a school where football reigns supreme, the Mississippi State-Ole Miss rivalry, taking down Big Blue Nation in the SEC Tournament, and earning the first – and still only – Final Four berth in school history. Send us a text In the University of Kentucky’s illustrious basketball history, Kyle Macy inherits a prominent place – and spawned a generation of boys named Kyle in Kentucky. Indiana’s Mr. Basketball in 1975 while playing for his father Bob at Peru High, the 6-3 point guard was a three-year starter for the Wildcats after spending his freshman season at Purdue. Macy helped the Wildcats capture the 1978 national title, breaking a 20-year drought that likely felt like a century-long drought to Big Blue Nation. When Macy’s collegiate career closed in 1980, he had a resume to rival any Wildcat: three All-American nods, an SEC Player of the Year award, and two SEC titles in addition to the 1978 national title. He left UK as the program’s all-time leader in assists and 12th on the Cats’ all-time scoring list. A first-round draft pick of the Phoenix Suns in 1979, Macy played seven seasons in the NBA. He was inducted into the University of Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Wildcats retired his #4 jersey in 1997. Send us a text We are joined today by someone many college basketball fans have gotten to know over recent years and that’s Loyola Chicago standout Lucas Willamson. We’re going to talk with Lucas a bit about his career on the court for the Ramblers, where the Chicago native was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference honoree and the league’s two-time Defensive Player of the Year, but even more about a special project he was involved in off the court. Williamson served as the narrator on “The Loyola Project,” a recently released documentary about the 1963 Loyola Ramblers, a team that broke racial barriers while also capturing the national title. Williamson will talk with us about his involvement in that project, the process of putting it together, and what he learned about this transformative squad. SUBSCRIBE TO THE 19NINE PODCAST! Send us a text In March 2000, the eighth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers rushed through the West Regional, defeating Arizona, LSU, and Purdue to claim the Badgers first Final Four appearance in more than 59 years. Though the Badgers Cinderella run ended with Final Four loss in Indianapolis to Big Ten foe and eventual national champ Michigan State, that Wisconsin squad helped elevate the Badgers, long a middling Big Ten program, into a March Madness regular.. Wisconsin would make the Big Dance every year over the next 17 seasons, including two additional Final Four runs under Bo Ryan. Today, we’re going to discuss that memorable Badgers run with the team’s leading scorer, 6-9 forward Mark Vershaw, and seek to understand how an 8-8 Big Ten team, one that never cracked the AP Top 25, one that didn’t feature a single all-conference selection – not even an honorable mention nod – defied the odds and captured a spot in the Final Four. Send us a text 19Nine Classic Michigan State vs. Indiana January 2001 Recorded: 28 December 2020/10:00 PM GUESTS: Aaron Meyer, Josh Barnett David Wilkinson Set the Scene (Knight talking on Dunn Meadow then Play Audio from Haston talk about Knight) The whole scene was eerily similar to the last time the Spartans played in Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers made a quick putback with half a second left to give IU an 81-79 victory Feb. 26. Until Sunday, it was the last time Michigan State had lost. The Spartans reeled off 23 consecutive victories. "This was a lot like last year, but this is better," Fife said. "It's a little more exciting that last year's tip-in because Michigan State is No. 1." On paper, the Spartans (12-1, 1-1 Big Ten) entered the game as the superior team. They lead IU (10-6, 1-1) in nearly every major statistical category during the season including scoring, defense, rebounding, turnovers and shooting percentage . Michigan State arrived at Assembly Hall on Sunday with the No. 1 ranking, an unbeaten record and the nation's longest winning streak. Kirk Haston's buzzer-beating 3-pointer changed all that ."It's a big win for us, that goes without saying," said Haston, who finished with 27 points. "To be the only team to beat this team, and we beat them two times in a row pretty much, and they're one of the best teams in the country if not the best team in the country, it's a big win for all the past players here and all the players on the team." "I didn't want to go to overtime," he said. "If we missed the shot, we missed it." Thousands of fans -- many of them IU students -- stood in the bleachers screaming. Sophomore guard forward Jason Richardson led the Spartans with 15 points. Richardson missed the front end of a one-and-one with 29 seconds left. Sophomore guard Tom Coverdale grabbed the rebound and called a time out. Two missed shots, two fouls and three free throws later, the Hoosiers called a time out. In the huddle, Davis told his team to run the play "23 Special," which would give either Hornsby or Haston a three-point look. "When I let it go, I couldn't see it because Randolph was in my face," Haston said after the game. "It felt good when it left my hand. When it went through, the first thing I did was look up at the clock, and I saw all zeroes. Then Coverdale tackled me -- along with the student body." The secret? John Calipari's squad was really, really good. So was Marcus Camby. The junior center poured in 32 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked 5 shots. It would remain a theme as the season went on with Camby leading the Minutemen to a #1 ranking, a #1 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament. Once there the Minutemen survived a scare from Stanford to reach the Sweet 16 where they destroyed 12-seed Arkansas to set up an Elite 8 showdown with Allen Iverson and the 2-seed Georgetown Hoyas. As it turns out it was only a showdown on paper as UMass cruised to a 14 point win and a trip to the schools first Final Four. Camby won several National Player of the Year awards for averaging 21ppg, 8rpg, and nearly 4 blocks before declaring for the NBA Draft where he was selected 2nd overall. “He was the difference on the team. Send us a text Guest: Casey Calvary https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/casey-calvary-1.html Host(s): The Chucker Around the turn of the century, Casey teamed with the likes of Richie Frahm, Matt Santangelo, and Dan Dickau in leading the Zags to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. That streak continues today, as Gonzaga has made 21 straight trips to the Big Dance, a mark only bested by Kansas, Duke, and fellow 19nine school Michigan State. Casey was the 2001 West Coast Conference Player of the Year and followed that up with a professional career in Japan, France, Australia, and Spain. 19nine excited to have Casey here to reflect on that run and Gonzaga’s ascent as a premier college basketball program. Take The Kennel, your home court, off the table. What’s the coolest gym you played in? Team you least enjoyed playing? Team you took great pride in beating? Most impressive opponent? (a specific player who impressed) Most overhyped guy you played against? Guy you’re most surprised didn’t carve out a more successful professional career? One Gonzaga teammate described you as a mellow dude off the court, but a guy who would run through his own mother to get a rebound. How accurate is that assessment? Coach Izzo at Michigan State plays the accordion. What’s something people would be surprised to know about Coach Few? At 19nine, we recently released the Gonzaga’s 1999 shorts as well as the Zags’ 2001 joints. Which did you prefer? Send us a text On today’s podcast The Chucker interviews Marshall Terrill, co-author of Pete Maravich: The Authorized Biography of Pistol Pete, a 2007 biography of the legendary LSU hoops star. This coincides with the 19Nine Launch of LSU Maravich, who still holds the NCAA’s career scoring leader despite playing only three seasons at LSU, remains one of the game’s most iconic and celebrated figures. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame labeled Maravich “perhaps the greatest creative offensive talent in history,” but the basketball genius’ off-the-court story, which includes his sudden passing in 1988 at the age of 40, is arguably as intriguing and nuanced as the tale he wrote on the hardwood. Terrill and The Chucker cover it all in this wide-ranging interview. Terrill is a prolific author who has penned more than 25 books, including biographies of other gone-too-soon icons. This ain't your same little brother following behind you trying to go outside. You ain't the motherfuckin' man no more. I'm the one! Shit has changed! It's a new day, bro.
